Have you wondered about
the round concrete structures
along the route of the Northern
Line? The one by Clapham
South tube is about to reveal
its secret.
It is a 30m deep civilian
air raid shelter built to
accommodate upto 10,000
people. London Transport
constructed 10 of them, and
8 were completed in 1942 (2
were unfinished, at St Pauls
and the Oval). Each shelter has
2 double-storey tunnels 400
metres long and divided into
four - all were dug by hand!
Daily life in the underworld was
basic – sleeping was in rows of
triple-tiered bunks and it was
cramped and noisy as tube
trains rattled overhead, but
there were medical facilities,
canteens, chemical toilets and
washing facilities. The shelters
were vital in 1944 when
London was attacked with the
V-1 Flying bombs.
Among other uses, the
Clapham South shelter
played a part in the story of
the SS Empire Windrush,
when in June 1948 it brought
Caribbeans to help rebuild
Britain: in the aftermath
of WW2 there were labour
shortages in hospitals,
construction, and transport.
Over 200 disembarked
people were housed in the
underground passages until
they could find accommodation
and work.
The Clapham South shelter
is Grade 2 listed, and The
London Transport Museum
is running a short season
of guided tours in August to
commemorate
the Windrush
70th anniversary as part of
Hidden London Tours.

It’s the season for packing bags for warmer
climes, but with our own hot weather and a
wealth of options for drinking al fresco, stick
with the Costa del streatham! I headed
outdoors to see what three streatham pubs had
to offer.
First up, Pratts and Payne. the pub is huge
which means you won’t have to worry about
getting a seat when heading out for a pint when
the sun comes out. the garden is much smaller
than the inside area but still offers lots of picnic
tables. Pratts have made a real effort to make
the most of the space, with jolly bunting and
hanging baskets. Pimm’s is £5 a glass or £15
a jug. and if you get carried away, stick around
and throw some shapes when the DJ appears on
saturday nights.
The White Lion. this is the place to be on a
hot day for the true south London experience.
the White Lion is the perfect place for a classic
British summer’s day; when the weather can’t
decide between heatwave or downpour, but
it’s warm enough to take your chances. this
pub has a covered indoor/outdoor area. the
current trend for restaurants and bars offering
on-street drinking areas is all well and good, but
not everyone wants to inhale the car fumes from
streatham high road whilst sipping a summery
beverage. the White Lion Courtyard feels al
fresco, and you can watch the world go by on
the high rd. but stay tucked away. the pub
doesn’t serve Pimm’s but has a range of classic
summer drinks on offer.
The manor Arms also has a couple of options
depending on how unpredictable the weather
is. Choose from a paved suntrap in a walled
garden, sit under a thatched roof, or take cover
in a booth. there are chairs a-plenty but the
tables are rather small, so you might struggle
Pratts & Payne

to find a spot if
you’re in a big
group. It’s easy to
lose track of the
time here but the
garden stays open
into the evening
and is well
lit – becoming
a romantic
hideaway with
twinkly fairy lights
after dark. the
manor arms sells
Pimm’s at £6 a
glass or £20 for
a pitcher and is
currently running
a summer food
and drinks menu
– including a
rhubarb margarita
and a summer
Negroni.
