The Streatham Festivals Season begins with Kite Day on Streatham Common on 14th May. We’re hoping for perfect weather – glorious sunshine with enough wind to loft the big spectacular kites we love to see but not too much to spoil the team displays or stop us all fl ying our own kites. We have a guide to the day from the Friends of Streatham Common in the centre of this magazine too. Read all about what’s going on and what’s coming up next in our wonderful area, and don’t miss Heart Streatham every month for all the info!
This is our tenth issue which means we’ve been in business a year now. Hooray! We would like your feedback on what you think about the magazine and if you take our survey at www.heartstreatham.co.uk/prize-survey, you’ll help us improve the magazine and there are prizes to be won as well!
Read all about some possible planning shenanigans in the area, where to go out on Mother’s Day and what we’ll be asking at the hustings we’re helping to organise this month. We heard all the detail from theatre pros on what the Megabowl theatre needs to be a sustainable venue, and we’re pleased to say the developers seem to have responded positively to it. We’ve been to see the police and they’ve kindly helped us with our enquiries. Read about Save the Children’s work in Streatham, find out about the thriving Streatham WI and how to join, and find out what’s on and what’s coming up in Streatham.

Our cover this month features the designs for the lovely new banners that are now proudly celebrating Streatham’s iconic buildings and events from lamp posts on the High Rd. Aptly, one of them celebrates the beautiful Streatham Hill Theatre. As we go to press, we were
contacted by the Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre to ask us to publicise their petition to Lambeth Council to uphold their decision to protect the 1928 Grade II listed theatre from possible destruction by declaring it an Asset of Community Value. This gives the building protection from immediate development - if it is put up for sale, the Streatham community will be given the opportunity to raise the funds to take it on. Now the owners of the building are appealing to Lambeth Council to reverse their decision. The Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre have until 29 November to convince the council that the theatre is worth saving. Sign the petition at: www.streathamhilltheatre.org

The Fascinating World of Bats: Unveiling the Secrets of the Nightthomasard1122
The Fascinating World of Bats: Unveiling the Secrets of the Night
Bats, the mysterious creatures of the night, have long been a source of fascination and fear for humans. With their eerie squeaks and fluttering wings, they have captured our imagination and sparked our curiosity. Yet, beyond the myths and legends, bats are fascinating creatures that play a vital role in our ecosystem.
There are over 1,300 species of bats, ranging from the tiny Kitti's hog-nosed bat to the majestic flying foxes. These winged mammals are found in almost every corner of the globe, from the scorching deserts to the lush rainforests. Their diversity is a testament to their adaptability and resilience.
Bats are insectivores, feeding on a vast array of insects, from mosquitoes to beetles. A single bat can consume up to 1,200 insects in an hour, making them a crucial part of our pest control system. By preying on insects that damage crops, bats save the agricultural industry billions of dollars each year.
But bats are not just useful; they are also fascinating creatures. Their ability to fly in complete darkness, using echolocation to navigate and hunt, is a remarkable feat of evolution. They are also social animals, living in colonies and communicating with each other through a complex system of calls and body language.
Despite their importance, bats face numerous threats, from habitat destruction to climate change. Many species are endangered, and conservation efforts are necessary to protect these magnificent creatures.
In conclusion, bats are more than just creatures of the night; they are a vital part of our ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of nature. By learning more about these fascinating animals, we can appreciate their importance and work to protect them for generations to come. So, let us embrace the beauty and mystery of bats, and celebrate their unique place in our world.

It’s all over the news, Parliament will be
dissolved and we get to elect our MPs to
represent us anew. Many say, “What’s the
point? They’re all the same and nothing
changes!”, so we spoke to a range of local
people to ask them: “If a new government
could do something to make your life better
(RULES: no magic wands, no extra money
and only national issues), what would it be?”
Streatham has one of the youngest
populations in the UK, and many young
people are transient – working and living here
for now but they may move away in a short
period. Our candidates should consider their
concerns.
The largest number of our ad hoc group
said they wanted affordable housing. Some
wish this for themselves as they need more
room for growing families but are settled
here and they don’t want to move away.
Others don’t see how their children can ever
afford to live in or even near Streatham. This
is exacerbated by student debt, which on
average is the highest in the Western world,
compounding at CPI + 3% regardless of
income or payment status, and averages
£44,000 upon graduation.
Transport is also important to many. Several
of our respondents said it regularly takes
them almost 2 hours to commute to jobs
in parts of north and/or east London. We
timed it and we can say we got almost to
Stonehenge on Good Friday in heavy traffic
in 2 hours! How many MPs have experienced

this horrible commute from Streatham? We
know from the Crossrail 2 campaign that
what “may have” made sense for public
transport investment when it was planned
many years ago doesn’t stack up today.
Government needs to be brave, change
its mind and reconsider Crossrail 2’s route
to meet current needs, using up to date
information.
Two barristers (who are also mums) were
concerned about the scandal of how much
money is wasted locking people up, when
a fraction of that mega-fortune spent as
targeted spending on at-risk young people
could prevent much of the crime that prison
sentences were meant to stop. But have you
ever heard that in the media or the press…?
Speaking of crime, three people were
stabbed to death in London over this past
weekend. Both parents and older folk we
spoke to were very concerned about the
sudden rise in violent crime and where it’s
come from and don’t believe the Met are
prepared to deal with it.
Finally, someone spoke about how life is
getting more expensive and the conversation
stayed there once started. Council tax,
utilities, trains, buses, school expenses, rent –
the list went on and on and a universal issue
was for government to stop doing things
that made life more expensive!
These are what people tell us are
important to them. Do candidates promise
what’s important to you? Ask yourself “will
they deliver?” (based on your experience)
and “HOW will they deliver?” given
everything you know. Then we urge you to
vote.

Stars from Streatham
Tommy Trinder was born on 24 March 1909
at No. 54 Wellfield Rd. Streatham. The son of
a tram driver, he was to become one of the
most famous comedians of his generation.
He was ranked with Max Miller, George
Formby, and Arthur Askey. He performed as
a comedian at the age of twelve, and built his
career in music halls and variety shows.
By the 1930s, Tommy was famous throughout
Britain for his rapid-fire wit, pork pie hat, and
catchphrase, “you lucky people!”. In the late
1930s he became a screen actor for Ealing
Studios with films such as Bells Go Down,
Bitter Springs, and Sailors Three with Michael
Wilding. Other films included Save a Little
Sunshine, Almost a Honeymoon, Laugh it Off,
She Couldn’t Say No, While Nero Fiddled,
and Champagne Charlie, the story of George
Leybourne, the music hall entertainer of the
1860s.
Tommy became a headliner at variety shows
such as Sunday
Night at The
London Palladium
from the 1950s,
and even once
appeared with
Frank Sinatra in
New York. From
the 1960s his career declined, though he
continued to tread the boards regularly in
panto and occasionally in variety shows.
Tommy Trinder was made a CBE in 1975,
and died of a heart attack at the age of 80 in
1989.
A Streatham Society plaque commemorating
his residence in Wellfield Rd. was unveiled by
Roy Hudd in June 1990.

FASCINATING STREATHAM
Have you ever seen what seems to be a huge
Hindu temple on the train outside Streatham
Common station? Have you wondered why
the hilly bit of Streatham is called Streatham
Wells, or what that cute but ancient looking
little building on the corner of Greyhound
Lane and Westwell Road was?
Well, the Streatham Society has been
researching these and many more interesting
aspects of the area for decades now.
Founded in 1974, the Society doesn't just
write books and hold meetings, it can
claim results locally, including preventing
of loss of the Streatham Wells mineral spa
building, stopping an urban motorway
being built across Streatham, the listing
and preservation of the Georgian silk mill
(Sainsbury's Superstore complex), and acting
as a key player in the building of the new
Ice and Leisure Centre and refurbishment of
Streatham library.
The Society
has launched a
new book highlighting many fascinating and
remarkable houses, buildings, monuments
and artefacts found in Streatham. Written
by the well-known local historian, John
W Brown, the book features many of
Streatham's unusual features often tucked
away out of prominent view, hidden down
side streets and easily overlooked.
Featured buildings include the temple-like
building pictured, and a small house in
Besley Street that once concealed an anti-
tank gun in the Second World War, the Dyce
Fountain on Streatham Green, the superb
mural in Palace Road Nature Gardens and an
electricity substation in Tooting Bec Gardens
disguised to look like a church chapel.

Society continue its good work.

19. Hillside Gardens Great British
Tennis and Sports Day – 13 May
The Friends of Hillside Gardens Park 3rd
annual Great British Tennis and Sports Day is
13 May, so with Kite Day, families can plan
to spend the weekend in Streatham’s green
spaces getting active.
The Day opens with a Quorn family tennis
tournament and you can join in with walking
football, yoga, and tennis coaching for
adults and children. There’s football for 9-12’s,
netball, Zumba and fun races and activities
culminating in a big family rounders game.
The Friends of Hillside Gardens Park raise funds
to ensure the park is well kept, and they run a
community garden and activities in the park.
In 2014, they invited Serious About Tennis to
set up a tennis programme which has been
registered this year, making it Streatham’s fifth
tennis club. The club aims to make tennis
accessible to all.
Jesse Scharf, Chair of Hillside Gardens Park
Friends, said “Last year just under 100 people
came and joined in with the sports
day and we are hoping to welcome
more this year.”
The Serious About Tennis coach is Dino
Skeete, recognised by the LTA for his work
developing tennis in Streatham and getting
children to County and national level.
Dino said “The Sports Day provides an
opportunity to get children and adults active
every year and show Streatham our lovely
park. It is very exciting starting a new club
including access to competitions, social
tennis, coaching programmes and holiday
camps.”
The Club is working closely with local schools
entering several teams into Surrey leagues
and will offer 60 free places for local children
who have not done tennis before under the
LTA’s Tennis for Kids initiative.”

20. The kites
Lex and Irma
are the Flying Fish
– they fly their kites as
a pair to music. Their
name comes from
their first pair of team
kites, which were a fish and
a shark called Neptune and
Jaws. The Flying Fish started
out on their local common
in Southampton – perhaps
another pair of flyers will get
the taste for kites after flying
at Streatham Kite Day this
year.
Last year we were hypnotised
by the father and son kite
flyers Team SPECTRUM, who
have flown together for over
20 years. They are both back
again and flying multiple kites
simultaneously – it’s a sight
not to be missed!
Members of the Kent Kite
Flyers, which has been
going since the early 1990s,
will be attending the festival.
One of the club's main aims
is to spread the word about
kite flying and encourage
people to get involved so
come along and have
a chat with them if you
need advice or have any
questions.
The most established club
attending Kite Day is the
Brighton Kite Flyers – they
have been around since
the 1970s and have an
international membership.
You might remember
the Brighton club for their
impressively massive kites
representing all kinds
of wildlife and unusual
characters.
Keith aka NASAman will
join us again to attempt to
use the power of the wind
to lift him up into the sky
but not quite into space.
His incredible kites can
genuinely lift him into the
air so he often has to be
tethered down, just in case.
A sight not to be missed.
Roy Reed has been making
and flying kites since he was
12 years old. This lifelong
passion helps him to escape
from the trials and tribulations
of the real world. Bring along
a kite and follow Roy’s lead.
We are pleased to also
welcome back the Grumpy
Old Gits and their big kites.
They are a small, very select
club, group or gang of “Old
Gits” who make kites, fly
kites and muck about. Look
out for them as they aim to
impress.
But Kite Day is not just for
the experts – the organisers
encourage people to bring
their own kites to fly. If you
don't own a kite, why not
make one or buy one on
site?
The stalls
Not all the stalls are kite
related – there are many
community stalls and food
and drink for everyone.
The Inkspot Brewery
– Streatham's own beer
maker – will be running a
bar again so you can wash
down your hog roast, burger
or jerk chicken with a locally
brewed pint. Keeping up
with the local theme, Fish
Tale will be on the Common
with an array of seafood
delicacies.
21. Streatham’s organic bakery –
Elephant Bakehouse – will
be on site if you want to grab
one of their tasty sourdough
loaves.
From sweet treats to savoury
delights, meaty to vegetarian
and vegan, almost all tastes
are catered for at Kite Day.
Streatham is a real
community and nothing says
it better than the many local
societies and membership
organisations represented at
Kite Day. All things Streatham
Common will be there,
with stalls from the Friends
of Streatham Common,
Streatham Common
Co-operative (SCCOOP)
and Streatham Common
Community Garden.
Streatham Action, our local
community forum will be
there, and the organisers of
the Streatham Festival will be
giving us a flavour of what to
expect at this year’s festival
1-9th July.
If you're interested in local
history, you can while away
the afternoon speaking
with members of the
Streatham Society. The
group has produced some
fascinating publications
about Streatham's history
that describe the changes
that have happened since
Streatham was a mere
hamlet on the road to the
coast.
Other Streatham community
groups include Streatham
Theatre Company,
Streatham Women's Institute
and the inspiring Streatham
Youth and Community
Trust. Lambeth Mencap,
Immanuel and St Andrew Fair
Trade, Pets As Therapy (PAT)
dogs and the Spires Project
for homelessness in South
London will also have stalls.
Beyond the kites
Kite Day is a wonderful family
event. In between marvelling
at the displays or kite flying,
children can go on the
bouncy castle or get their
faces painted.
Dance on the Common
to live music from
GroovEsscence, who will
play between the displays.
And if dancing is not for
you, explore the community
stalls to get a taste of the
incredible groups and
societies which help make
Streatham so special.
Richard Payne, from the
Friends of Streatham
Common, which organises
Kite Day is excited about the
2017 event.
“Streatham Kite Day is
London’s only kite festival
and has been drawing
crowds for nearly 20 years.
But we think this year’s event
will be the best ever – we’ve
got more kite displays, more
food stalls and a bigger bar
and kite shop.”
“You’ll have a great time at
Kite Day and, most amazing
of all, the event is run by
volunteers and any profits
made are put back into
restoring and maintaining
the Common and its
gardens.”
History of Kite Day
Streatham Kite Day originally
started as a festival
celebrating all things to do
with the wind back in 1998.
The first Wind Day saw not
only kites but a wind harp
that travelled all the way
from Bristol. Wind Day was
organised by the Friends
of Streatham Common
shortly after the group was
formed. A day celebrating
the wind was the perfect
event for the nascent
voluntary organisation as the
Common lies in the path of
winds blowing in from the
West and was once home to
a working wind mill.
After that successful first Wind
Day, kites became the focus
and Streatham Kite Day has
become a regular event
on the Common each year
attracting thousands of
people.

22. The Friends of Streatham Common is a voluntary organisation run by
local residents. The Friends work to ensure that Streatham Common and
the Rookery are well kept and have facilities for all sections of the local
community, providing community views of the maintenance and development
of the area in a way that balances the needs of a diverse group of users.
As well as running Streatham Kite Day, the
Friends also run a number of popular public
events each year which include Bird

and the Fun Dog Show.
The Friends campaigned to
restore the Rookery Gardens and
won funding from the Heritage

and installed a nature trail, and
organised events to mark the

Friends of Streatham Common has elected

Birds of Streatham Common
PETER NEWMARK
Take a stroll around Streatham
Common at any time of the year
and with luck you could see 15-20
different species of bird that reside
there. Keep a list, as I do, of all
the birds that you have ever seen
on, or flying over, the Common and
you could notch up over 60 species.
Whether your interest in birds is serious
or casual, April and May are the best
months to be looking and listening
out for them.
Spring is the time that birds are in
their finest plumage and voice. The
males are trying to look and sing
their best to attract a mate. Robins,
blackbirds and wrens – three of the
most frequent species you will encounter –
are all bursting with song. Another common
species, the tiny wren, will be harder to
see but very easy to hear, as it declares its
presence in the undergrowth in ridiculously
loud trilling tones. Watch closely and you
will see birds gathering nesting material.
Starlings take it from grassy areas before
flying back to their nest in the loft or roof of a
nearby house: crows will be carrying sticks in
their beaks to their tree-top nests. And blue
tits and great tits will be taking moss and
twigs into some of the 30+ nest boxes on
trees around the Common.
Spring is also the time to look for summer
visitors. Two warblers will arrive from Africa
or southern Europe to breed. These are
chiffchaffs, which reach here at the end of
March, and blackcaps arriving a week or
two later. Other visitors are just passing over
London on their way to the countryside.
Some, like swallows and house martins,
will just fly over, while others will drop in
for a while to rest and refuel. For example,
occasionally a cuckoo can be heard.
There are also a few winter visitors. The
most obvious of these are gulls, a flock of
which hangs out near the A23. Look at them
closely and you will see two, three or even
four different species. Other visitors
that usually turn up are redwings
or fieldfares, members of the
thrush family that come here from
Scandinavia in search of food and
relative warmth.
The most obvious birds on the
Common are inevitably the largest
and noisiest; Crows, magpies, wood
pigeons and ring-necked parakeets.
The bright green parakeets, which
arrived here around 20 years ago,
nest in holes in trees, but when
not nesting they head off every
evening to join several thousand
others that descend on Mitcham
Common to roost overnight. They are
not, of course, natives to the UK but derived
from a few pairs that escaped in the London
area, started breeding and have been rapidly

The New Health Fad - it’s been here millennia!
Both Christianity and Islam famously
advocate periods of fasting as important
spiritual practices, a topical subject after
Lent and with Ramadan this month. There is
also the Jewish fast of Yom Kipper and we
see the practice also observed in Buddhism,
Hinduism and Taoism.
Fasting has been recognised for millennia as
a beneficial practice, and new studies have
demonstrated the health benefits of this
age-old practice. A study recently, showed
that fasting could regenerate the pancreas
and could offer new treatment pathways
for diabetes. The 5:2 diet has also raised
awareness of the benefits of intermittent
fasting, which can slow ageing, aid weight
loss, lower blood pressure and reduce
cholesterol.
Why is intermittent fasting, the denial of
essential nutrition, a good habit? Well, there
are two main processes that a fast will trigger;
autophagy and ketosis.
Ketosis is triggered once the liver depletes
all its stores of glycogen - it is a very efficient
way for your body to metabolise its energy
stores. Not only do many people find they
can perform better mentally, the body also
produces fewer damaging free-radicals
in ketosis. It will normally take you a day
or two of drastically restricting sugar and
carbohydrates to achieve an advanced state
of ketosis. Most people will find they are in
a mild state of ketosis when they wake up
in the morning, particularly if they ate their
dinner early. It’s possible to prolong this state
by simply skipping breakfast.
Autophogy literally means self–devouring.
Your body is a very clever organism and
chooses to devour its cellular junk into
amino acids first, which recycles your body’s
garbage, and is thought to limit the aging
of cells, suppress cancers and help destroy
infections.
But isn’t fasting difficult? Some ways are
less arduous than others and start by trying a
couple of different fasting techniques to see
which suits you best. You could start by once
a week having dinner early at around 6pm,
skip breakfast the next day and have lunch
late. Once you’ve completed a short fast, you
should find it becomes much easier the next
time. You should find that your cravings for
sugary and high carbohydrate foods reduce
significantly, even when not fasting.
It’s often said that there is nothing new under
the sun. Well this fad certainly isn’t new, but if
you’re looking for a practice to help cleanse,
revitalise, rejuvenate or maybe even alleviate
some sun damage your skin might have
encountered over the years could consider
skipping the odd meal.
If you decide you’d like to give fasting a go,
please seek medical advice first

The Heat is on in Streatham
Last month the Evening Standard reported
that Streatham’s house prices are growing
faster than Brixton’s, and asked, “is SW16
set to be south-west London’s next property
hotspot?” In 2016, Streatham has seen prices
rise by “12.6 per cent, compared to 1.4 per
cent in Brixton” according to a local estate
agent.
Rightmove data shows that a terraced home
in Streatham sells for an average of £596,000,
around half of the cost of a similar sized family
house in neighbouring Balham and Clapham.
Streatham, as we know, also boasts some
beautiful spacious houses with good sized
gardens, beautiful parks, Streatham and
Tooting Bec Commons, and excellent schools
in and around the area.
Streatham was also ranked number 18 in the
Evening Standard’s barista barometer which
noted the link between new coffee shops
opening and an uplift in property prices. We’re
also very much aware
of the number of
quality new businesses
in our area, as well
as branches of those
in our more affluent
neighbours targeting
Streatham. The
Financial Times (somewhat aghast), reported
the tweet, “I just heard a mother utter the
words ‘Come on Leo, and watch you don’t
damage your cello’. THIS IS IN STREATHAM.”
New and would-be Streathamites are
amazed by how much is going on here with
our summer season of Festivals, vibrant live
music scene, and fabulous pubs, bars, and
restaurants. As we heard from one on Merlot
Monday in the Streatham Wine House last
week, “There’s a real sense of community
here, Streatham’s special,” no wonder it is on
the up!
