The Streatham Common Co-op ran a superb
Woodland Activity Day on Streatham Common
in the woods above the Rookery last month.
The activities included fire craft, tree-climbing,
forest school, woodland food foraging, and
drama. It proved to be a great success, as
most sessions sold out. My children and I did a
session, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We'd
like to see a lot more of this in the future!
The annual Friends of Streatham Common
Easter Egg Hunt was, as usual, a great success
running alongside the Woodland Activity Day.
Our local national-class sports stars did well in
March. The Streatham Redskins got to the final
of the EHL Cup, plus the Herne Hill Harriers
achieved top 10 places at the English Schools
Inter-counties championship and National
Cross Country championships at Donington
Park. HHH U15 girls took gold!
You may have seen the new, very tall LED
poster opposite the War Memorial by
Streatham Common. This is part of four LED
billboards to be erected there. Your council
has already given consent for this! The new
Streatham Action committee created a
planning scrutiny Committee in response to
this controversial decision, to ensure it doesn't
happen again. Get involved yourself – email:
chair@streathamaction.org.uk
Finally, along those lines, we learned Lambeth
Council has new strategies to run alongside
the budget cuts it is making. The council plans
to increase its income from events (as on
Streatham Common and the other commons
etc.) at the same time as reducing services and
demand for them.

Dr. Johnson Avenue Closure
Since our last issue, Wandsworth
Council has extended the
deadline for the consultation on
the proposed closure of Dr. Johnson
Avenue in response to local residents'
(in both Lambeth and Wandsworth) serious
concerns about the plan.
The Council’s current plan is to close Dr
Johnson Avenue, which crosses Tooting
Common, and restrict entry into Elmbourne
Road by banning right turns into it from the
direction of Streatham. Under the proposals,
some of the existing footway and road on Dr
Johnson Avenue would be grassed over and
returned to common land.
Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting said “Residents
are right to be concerned that they have not
been properly consulted up to now and that
the traffic implications of these proposals
have not been properly thought through.”
The proposal to close Dr Johnson Avenue
has already been subject to public
consultation in Wandsworth, with 58 per
cent of respondents backing it. However,
the Council has since added a contentious
proposal to restrict access to Elmbourne
Road, which was not consulted on.
Streatham and Furzedown would be
severely impacted by this proposal, with
questionable traffic modelling
indicating huge increases in
traffic in Garrad's Rd at peak
time, and a 9% increase Streatham
High Rd peak time northerly traffic.
www.heartstreatham.co.uk8
Furzedown residents would be penned to the
south of Tooting Bec Rd between Garrad's
Rd and beyond Balham High Rd, which has
no right turn at the junction with Balham High
Rd.
However inadequate traffic modelling makes
the outcome uncertain. There also appears
to be no mechanism by which residents can
object to the proposals after the six month
trial period.
Sadiq Khan and Chuka Umunna have
written a joint letter to Wandsworth Council
requesting details of the Council's current
proposed traffic management solutions as
well as an extension of the consultation area.
A packed public meeting on 22 March
indicated the strength of feeling about this
proposal, with the vocal vast majority being
against it. Residents are also concerned
about the way the initial consultation was
conducted, given that it was used as the
basis for the successful bid to the Lottery
Fund for funding the scheme, claiming it
did "not
adequately
represent the
community".
Speculation
in literature
distributed at
the meeting
is that if Dr
Johnson
Avenue was
blocked and
redesignated
common
land, a land swap could take place with
the existing car park. If the car park was
redesignated as highway land, rather
than Common land, then "parking control
measures could be introduced following
statutory consultation."
Respond to the consultation by 15 April

We’re pleased to welcome The Funky Potter
to the High Road. Located in the former
Rosca Cafe premises, it’s still run by Karim
and Zara Rosca but offering a wider range
of lovely foods and pottery making on site.
The premises has been refurbished to a very
high standard and Zara’s pottery wares are
gorgeous!
We were also pleased to pop into Azzurri
Pizzeria to buy a loaf of their sourdough
bread, when we met a couple who were there
having read about it in last month’s magazine.
We can now reveal that Azzurri is opening
a second pizzeria in Streatham Hill. Now
anyone in Streatham is mere minutes stroll
from superb Neapolitan pizza made from
from fresh, local, organic ingredients.
After rousing the troops to man the Lambeth
Planning barricades when we heard the
Inkspot Brewery application was under
threat, we’re pleased to learn it has been
granted consent. The community rallied
behind it after members of the Streatham
Action Planning Scrutiny Committee tipped
us off to opposition that might have wrecked
the plans for the micro-brewery to locate in
the disused barn in the Streatham Common
Rookery.
Welcome to Morisco, a new Spanish themed
restaurant just opened in Mitcham Lane. We'll
be in soon to try it out.
Finally, as trailed much earlier on social
media, the Norwich House ground floor
shops have submitted an app for planning
consent to consolidate all the shops into one.
What we would really like to see is a “little
Waitrose” there. Come back home, Waitrose!

Streatham Gourmet – The Bull by Russ Kane
The old Pied Bull was built in 1768 as a
coaching inn and became a popular halt
for travellers en route to London. In
1832 Young’s Brewery, the oldest
in Britain, leased it and, 100 years
later, purchased it.
This traveller and his trusty
companions, after an arduous
walk lasting several heroic minutes,
visited this historic establishment on
a very busy Saturday night. England's
rugby team were beating the French
on several large flat screens, to
the exuberant vocal delight of the
crowd. On the way to the spacious
restaurant. you notice the wooden
floors and rugs, roaring fires,
original etched mirrors, coloured
leaded-light windows..stylish without
trying too hard.
Jamie, attentive, welcoming, was looking
after us, complete with mini iPad for taking
the order. Would we like some drinks?
Oddly, yes. Not cheap – prices range
from £4.75 for 175ml to £8.10 for a
large 250ml glass of red.
The menu varied and exceptionally
tempting, includes creative
vegetarian options. But this is a
venue that likes its meat. A whole
section of the menu is devoted to
the ‘Butchers Block’ where Black Angus
sirloin, fillet and chateaubriand vie for
your attention.
Young Master Kane opted to start
with Braised Short Rib Croquettes
followed by the British Beef Burger
loaded with American cheese, ale
onions, pickles and a mountain of
Skinny Fries. The burger was the size
of a family hatchback, he loved it and like
all 17 year olds, demolished it.
www.heartstreatham.co.uk12
My companion had Brixham Crab Cakes,
wilted kale and saffron mayo while I plumped
for Sipsmith cured wild salmon, cornichons,
crème fraiche and caper berries.
Presentation was West End class
and each dish delivered its culinary
promise. Main courses – I had
Crispy Dingley Dell pork belly,
mashed potato, black pudding,
spiced red cabbage with apple
sauce while madam chose pan-fried
Gressingham duck breast, eschallot
confit potatoes, orange puree and wild
mushroom. All perfectly cooked. This
is no pub food.
In the cause of a comprehensive
review we then had dessert,
despite Master Kane having left,
and I almost defeated a Salted
Chocolate Tart, caramel popcorn and
vanilla ice cream while across the table
Apple and Pear Crumble was attacked.
Again, terrific presentation and taste.
“Southwark” the large outside bar is
equipped with Meantime Brewery Fresh
tanks, heaters, beach huts (no really) and
Astro turf. Effortlessly cool.
To sum up, The Bull provides for
all ages, from kids, to 20’s to
proper grown ups! There’s a huge
selection of drinks, first-class
food and tip-top service. Average
price per head I estimate at around
£35, depending on your choices and
drinks.
My one and only complaint. It's hard
to be heard across the restaurant
table with the background music,
and it clashed with the enthusiastic
noise from the bar, and please, no
more Simply Red!

Crossrail 2 Streatham Update
By Neil Salt, Chair, Streatham Action
Transport Committee
Caroline Pidgeon tweeted us to confirm
her promise to review the CR2 route to
include Streatham
Crossrail2 Latest
The lengthy CR2 Consultation Analysis
report has just been published, and mentions
Streatham several times, thanks to all who
responded to the consultation and signed
the petition. The report shows many more
people are dissatisfied than satisfied with the
route from Victoria to Wimbledon. Streatham
Action’s proposal for CR2 involves omitting
stations at King’s Road Chelsea and Balham
and adding a CR2 station at Streatham.
We propose reinstating the CR2 station at
Tooting Broadway, providing connectivity with
Northern Line
Everything to play for
86% of respondents to have “issues and
concerns” with a CR2 station at King’s Rd,
and the National Infrastructure Commission’s
recent report recommends removing it from
the route as it “does not provide the strategic
interchange or crowding relief provided by
other stations.” Adding Streatham instead
would then add only 3, rather than 5 minutes
on overall journey times.
83% of CR2 consultation respondents on the
question of a Balham station have “issues
and concerns”, with overwhelming support
for Tooting Broadway rather than Balham -
only 9% supported Balham, and 9% were
classified “neutral”. Oddly, the report
puts the 408 out of a total 588 comments
supporting a station at Streatham in this
“neutral” category, not the “issues and
concerns” category.
We now know Streatham will be considered
for the route if if the next Mayor instructs CR2
to assess the case. I have written to the main
candidates to ask their position on pledging
a review of the route south of Victoria, and
have received these responses so far.
Zac Goldsmith Conservative candidate
“I was very interested to read the Streatham
Action business case for Crossrail 2.  This
is certainly a well thought out case and the
benefits of Streatham being included are
substantial.... However, should the current
route go ahead, please rest assured that I
will not leave areas like Streatham without
improved rail services”
Caroline Pidgeon Liberal Democrat
candidate
“Streatham should strongly be considered
www.heartstreatham.co.uk 15
as an option for Crossrail2.  There is a strong
business case to be made for the route to
serve the area, and the argument that linking
CR2 with the Northern Line at either Tooting
Broadway or Balham is one that should be
actively explored.
Sian Berry, Green Party candidate
“I can see that Crossrail 2 would bring
enormous benefits to Streatham, and
the Greens at City Hall have consistently
supported this idea. I don’t believe the
current route is set in stone, and the next
Mayor should review the location of the
stations and make a full assessment of the
wider costs and benefits of each option.”
Streatham offers great potential for
regeneration, and desperately improved fast
transport links, and pollution reduction along
the toxic A23. CR2 has never investigated
how commuters from & through Streatham
are loading the Northern and Victoria lines.
The new London Mayor must instruct CR2 to
fully review the route including a Streatham
station.

Lionel Kenneth Crabb (known as Buster
Crabb) was born on 28th January 1909
in Greyswood Street, off Mitcham Lane,
Furzedown. He was apparently an inspiration
to Ian Fleming for his James Bond novel
“Thunderball” and the English actor,
Laurence Harvey, played the
role of Lieutenant Commander
Crabb in the 1958 film "The
Silent Enemy".
In 1941 he joined the British
Royal Navy and worked
variously in Gibraltar, Italy
and Palestine as a specialist
frogman in underwater bomb
and mine disposal. His career
became both WWII and Cold
War folklore. He was awarded an
OBE and a George Cross for outstanding
courage.
After WWII he first had a number of civilian
roles, working variously, as a model,
undertaker and art salesman but later re-joined
the Royal Navy until 1955.
He was recruited by MI6 in 1956 to
supposedly examine the hull and propeller
of the state-of-the-art Soviet cruiser
Ordzhonikidze in Portsmouth harbour. It
had brought Nikita Khrushchev and Nikolai
Bulganin to Britain on a diplomatic mission.
He was never seen again. The newspapers
were full of the story and the subject was
raised in Parliament. The Prime Minister,
Sir Anthony Eden, told MPs: "It would not
be in the public interest to disclose the
circumstances in which Commander Crabb is
presumed to have met his death”
Various conspiracy theories exist; he was
captured by the Soviets, brainwashed,
defected and became a double agent, he died
during Soviet interrogation, he was killed in the
harbour by the Soviets who were lying in
wait having received a tip-off from a
British spy (probably Kim Philby),
he died by misadventure and
even, according to a more
recent newspaper article
"Buster Crabb was murdered
– by MI5"!
Over a year later in June 1957
a headless and handless body
in a diving suit was brought to
the surface in their net by two
fishermen in Chichester harbour. It
was never formally identified.
He was presumed dead in 1956 but
Government documents relating to the case
will not be released until 2057

There’s more to Tooting Bec Lido than
horrendous queues on hot summer days.
Membership of South London Swimming Club
gives you access to the lido 365 days a year
and a packed summer schedule of swims,
parties and training sessions.
Open water swimming is one of the fastest
growing sports in the UK, with people taking
to our rivers, lakes and seas to enjoy the
experience of being immersed in the great
outdoors. Whether you want to try winter
swimming, pull on your wetsuit for a mile
open water race or have set your sights on
the English Channel, Tooting Bec Lido is the
perfect training ground and introduction to
outdoor swimming. South west London’s very
own “wild swimming” spot is home to South
London Swimming Club, whose members
swim all year round in the huge, unheated
pool. And cake. Every Sunday the club meets
to race for fun, glory and confectionary.
Nearly 100-metres long, the lido is perfect for
open water swimming and triathlon training
and attracts serious swimmers as well those
trying out open water swimming for the first
time. Our summer schedule of races includes
four short-distance aquathlons, a relay
triathlon and a 10km swim, and members of
the club swim around the country (and world)
in races and challenges.
The club also has a busy social side. Summer
evenings, after the public have left, see club
races, relays and parties. In winter, club
members have use of a Finnish sauna to warm
up too!
Annual membership to South London
Swimming Club costs £135. www.slsc.org.uk

£612m a year wasted on Cosmetic Treatments
By Dr Nilu Vajpeyi
It has been estimated that in the UK up to £612
million a year is wasted on cosmetic treatments
where patients are simply not satisfied with
the results they achieve. This is the latest
finding from the combined research of Botox
manufacturer Allergan, the Journal of Cosmetic
Dermatology and the Houses of Parliament’s
Office of Science & Technology.
The UK’s Aesthetic Market in 2015 was worth
£3.6 Billion, but the evidence shows that many
treatments are ineffective or do not deliver
the desired results. Almost a third of patients
undergoing Laser hair removal state that they
are unsatisfied with their results the emergence
of unregulated clinics and has led to recent
reports of a Cosmetic Crisis waiting to happen.
In November 2010 the use of aesthetic lasers
was deregulated and clinics are now no-longer
required to register with the medical watchdog
– The Care Quality Commission (CQC). In
addition to this the Department of Health’s
recent Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic
Interventions found that “Dermal fillers are a
particular cause for concern as anyone can
set themselves up as a practitioner, with no
requirement for knowledge, training or previous
experience”. The report also found that in
their view dermal fillers were a crisis waiting
to happen. The combined effect of this is a
situation where those undertaking any aesthetic
treatments can be exposed to significant risks
and very little protection if the procedures don’t
go to plan. The NHS medical director Professor
Sir Bruce Keogh, who led the independent
review, said: "The most striking thing is that
anybody, anywhere, anytime can give a filler to
anybody else and that is bizarre”.
Clearly these findings are a real cause for
concern, and are particularly concerning
when we at Brigstock Skin and Laser Centre
consider the numbers we see at our clinic who
have wasted significant amounts of money
on ineffective treatments before coming to
us. There are, however, a number of simple
precautions you can take to avoid wasting your
money in this way. First of all, always seek out
a medical clinic registered with the CQC. These
clinics will always be staffed with doctors and
clinically trained technicians. Also check out
the testimonials. Don’t just trust those on the
clinic’s own website. Be sure to also check out
the reviews on Google and Facebook where
the clinic is not able to cherry pick only the
best comments. Finally always find out if the
clinic offers any guarantees. Brigstock Skin
and Laser Centre is extremely proud to offer its
patients a results and satisfaction guarantee.
This means we’ll treat you for free if you are
not 100% satisfied and cannot see any results
from your treatment therapies. Not many clinics
are prepared to offer guarantees like this but
Brigstock Skin and Laser feels it is only fair
that you know your money will not be wasted
whatever investment you choose for your skin.
New laws have been promised following Sir
Bruce Keogh’s review, but it is likely to be some
time before these take effect. In the meantime
if you’re considering any aesthetic treatments
make sure you only consider treatments
from medically registered clinics, clinics with
excellent testimonials and those offering results
guarantees just like Brigstock Skin and Laser
Centre.

The emergence of Hideaway Jazz Club accompanied a sister project, Hideaway
Work Space, a celebration of Streatham’s entrepreneurial spirit. The abandoned
Lambeth Rent Offices were renovated into a stylish and modern office complex on
the newly christened Empire Mews, a nod to the site’s Picture Palace heritage, a
place where people went to see great adventures fulfilled! This bustling business
community has since expanded to offer open-plan hot-desking, a facility that has
been embraced by Streatham’s thriving network of creative SMEs.

Tickets for the first leg of the National Ice
Hockey League Division One Cup Final are
selling like hotcakes as we go to press, and
the Streatham Redskins get ready for their
chance at picking up some long awaited
silverware.
Chelmsford Chieftains were the opponents
at Streatham Ice Rink on Saturday 26 March
before the second leg in Essex on Sunday 27
March.
It really was the game not to miss as with
Steven Fisher back from suspension and
Streatham take on the league champions in
South London.
We were printing as the games took place, so
we can't tell you the score, but have a look
on www.streatham-hockey.co.uk.
Streatham qualified for the final after
advancing from a group including Solent
Devils and Wightlink Raiders, before beating
Invicta Dynamos in a thrilling semi-final earlier
this month.
The Streatham Redskins are the oldest
ice hockey club in the UK, and were first
established in 1932. The new rink at the
Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre has
allowed them to make progress on the ice,
and to build a bigger fan base. The club is
going from strength to strength. Support has
also grown from an average 3-400 per home
game to some games being packed with over
750 fans this season. There is plenty of room
for more, and Streatham can be very proud
of the team whose hard work and passionate
commitment has brought them to the cup
final.
There's still time to get down and see top ice
hockey action this season, as Streatham will
face Oxford City Stars in the Play-Off quarter
finals. The 1st leg will take place in Oxford
on Saturday 2 April, and the 2nd leg will be
in Streatham on Sunday 3 April at 6.45pm.
Tickets £10 and £6 concessions.

My children and I did a session, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We'd like to see a lot more of this in the future! The annual Friends of Streatham Common Easter Egg Hunt was, as usual, a great success running alongside the Woodland Activity Day. Our local national-class sports stars did well in March. The Streatham Redskins got to the final of the EHL Cup, plus the Herne Hill Harriers achieved top 10 places at the English Schools Inter-counties championship and National Cross Country championships at Donington Park. HHH U15 girls took gold! You may have seen the new, very tall LED poster opposite the War Memorial by Streatham Common. This is part of four LED billboards to be erected there. Your council has already given consent for this! The new Streatham Action committee created a planning scrutiny Committee in response to this controversial decision, to ensure it doesn't happen again. Get involved yourself – email: chair@streathamaction.org.uk Finally, along those lines, we learned Lambeth Council has new strategies to run alongside the budget cuts it is making. The council plans to increase its income from events (as on Streatham Common and the other commons etc.) at the same time as reducing services and demand for them. www.heartstreatham.co.uk 7 Streatham Soapbox Dr.Johnson Avenue Closure Since our last issue, Wandsworth Council has extended the deadline for the consultation on the proposed closure of Dr. Johnson Avenue in response to local residents' (in both Lambeth and Wandsworth) serious concerns about the plan. The Council’s current plan is to close Dr Johnson Avenue, which crosses Tooting Common, and restrict entry into Elmbourne Road by banning right turns into it from the direction of Streatham. Under the proposals, some of the existing footway and road on Dr Johnson Avenue would be grassed over and returned to common land. Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting said “Residents are right to be concerned that they have not been properly consulted up to now and that the traffic implications of these proposals have not been properly thought through.” The proposal to close Dr Johnson Avenue has already been subject to public consultation in Wandsworth, with 58 per cent of respondents backing it. However, the Council has since added a contentious proposal to restrict access to Elmbourne Road, which was not consulted on. Streatham and Furzedown would be severely impacted by this proposal, with questionable traffic modelling indicating huge increases in traffic in Garrad's Rd at peak time, and a 9% increase Streatham High Rd peak time northerly traffic.
  • 8.
www.heartstreatham.co.uk8 Furzedown residents wouldbe penned to the south of Tooting Bec Rd between Garrad's Rd and beyond Balham High Rd, which has no right turn at the junction with Balham High Rd. However inadequate traffic modelling makes the outcome uncertain. There also appears to be no mechanism by which residents can object to the proposals after the six month trial period. Sadiq Khan and Chuka Umunna have written a joint letter to Wandsworth Council requesting details of the Council's current proposed traffic management solutions as well as an extension of the consultation area. A packed public meeting on 22 March indicated the strength of feeling about this proposal, with the vocal vast majority being against it. Residents are also concerned about the way the initial consultation was conducted, given that it was used as the basis for the successful bid to the Lottery Fund for funding the scheme, claiming it did "not adequately represent the community". Speculation in literature distributed at the meeting is that if Dr Johnson Avenue was blocked and redesignated common land, a land swap could take place with the existing car park. If the car park was redesignated as highway land, rather than Common land, then "parking control measures could be introduced following statutory consultation." www.heartstreatham.co.uk 9 *Valid April1st-30th FREE BLOW DRY WITH ANY COLOUR ON TUESDAYS IN APRIL ParishPump We’re pleased to welcome The Funky Potter to the High Road. Located in the former Rosca Cafe premises, it’s still run by Karim and Zara Rosca but offering a wider range of lovely foods and pottery making on site. The premises has been refurbished to a very high standard and Zara’s pottery wares are gorgeous! We were also pleased to pop into Azzurri Pizzeria to buy a loaf of their sourdough bread, when we met a couple who were there having read about it in last month’s magazine. We can now reveal that Azzurri is opening a second pizzeria in Streatham Hill. Now anyone in Streatham is mere minutes stroll from superb Neapolitan pizza made from from fresh, local, organic ingredients. After rousing the troops to man the Lambeth Planning barricades when we heard the Inkspot Brewery application was under threat, we’re pleased to learn it has been granted consent. The community rallied behind it after members of the Streatham Action Planning Scrutiny Committee tipped us off to opposition that might have wrecked the plans for the micro-brewery to locate in the disused barn in the Streatham Common Rookery. Welcome to Morisco, a new Spanish themed restaurant just opened in Mitcham Lane. We'll be in soon to try it out. Finally, as trailed much earlier on social media, the Norwich House ground floor shops have submitted an app for planning consent to consolidate all the shops into one. What we would really like to see is a “little Waitrose” there. Come back home, Waitrose!

www.heartstreatham.co.uk 11 Streatham Gourmet– The Bull by Russ Kane The old Pied Bull was built in 1768 as a coaching inn and became a popular halt for travellers en route to London. In 1832 Young’s Brewery, the oldest in Britain, leased it and, 100 years later, purchased it. This traveller and his trusty companions, after an arduous walk lasting several heroic minutes, visited this historic establishment on a very busy Saturday night. England's rugby team were beating the French on several large flat screens, to the exuberant vocal delight of the crowd. On the way to the spacious restaurant. you notice the wooden floors and rugs, roaring fires, original etched mirrors, coloured leaded-light windows..stylish without trying too hard. Jamie, attentive, welcoming, was looking after us, complete with mini iPad for taking the order. Would we like some drinks? Oddly, yes. Not cheap – prices range from £4.75 for 175ml to £8.10 for a large 250ml glass of red. The menu varied and exceptionally tempting, includes creative vegetarian options. But this is a venue that likes its meat. A whole section of the menu is devoted to the ‘Butchers Block’ where Black Angus sirloin, fillet and chateaubriand vie for your attention. Young Master Kane opted to start with Braised Short Rib Croquettes followed by the British Beef Burger loaded with American cheese, ale onions, pickles and a mountain of Skinny Fries. The burger was the size of a family hatchback, he loved it and like all 17 year olds, demolished it.

www.heartstreatham.co.uk12 My companion hadBrixham Crab Cakes, wilted kale and saffron mayo while I plumped for Sipsmith cured wild salmon, cornichons, crème fraiche and caper berries. Presentation was West End class and each dish delivered its culinary promise. Main courses – I had Crispy Dingley Dell pork belly, mashed potato, black pudding, spiced red cabbage with apple sauce while madam chose pan-fried Gressingham duck breast, eschallot confit potatoes, orange puree and wild mushroom. All perfectly cooked. This is no pub food. In the cause of a comprehensive review we then had dessert, despite Master Kane having left, and I almost defeated a Salted Chocolate Tart, caramel popcorn and vanilla ice cream while across the table Apple and Pear Crumble was attacked. Again, terrific presentation and taste. “Southwark” the large outside bar is equipped with Meantime Brewery Fresh tanks, heaters, beach huts (no really) and Astro turf. Effortlessly cool. To sum up, The Bull provides for all ages, from kids, to 20’s to proper grown ups! There’s a huge selection of drinks, first-class food and tip-top service. Average price per head I estimate at around £35, depending on your choices and drinks. My one and only complaint. It's hard to be heard across the restaurant table with the background music, and it clashed with the enthusiastic noise from the bar, and please, no more Simply Red! www.heartstreatham.co.uk14 Crossrail 2 StreathamUpdate By Neil Salt, Chair, Streatham Action Transport Committee Caroline Pidgeon tweeted us to confirm her promise to review the CR2 route to include Streatham Crossrail2 Latest The lengthy CR2 Consultation Analysis report has just been published, and mentions Streatham several times, thanks to all who responded to the consultation and signed the petition. The report shows many more people are dissatisfied than satisfied with the route from Victoria to Wimbledon. Streatham Action’s proposal for CR2 involves omitting stations at King’s Road Chelsea and Balham and adding a CR2 station at Streatham. We propose reinstating the CR2 station at Tooting Broadway, providing connectivity with Northern Line Everything to play for 86% of respondents to have “issues and concerns” with a CR2 station at King’s Rd, and the National Infrastructure Commission’s recent report recommends removing it from the route as it “does not provide the strategic interchange or crowding relief provided by other stations.” Adding Streatham instead would then add only 3, rather than 5 minutes on overall journey times. 83% of CR2 consultation respondents on the question of a Balham station have “issues and concerns”, with overwhelming support for Tooting Broadway rather than Balham - only 9% supported Balham, and 9% were classified “neutral”. Oddly, the report puts the 408 out of a total 588 comments supporting a station at Streatham in this “neutral” category, not the “issues and concerns” category. We now know Streatham will be considered for the route if if the next Mayor instructs CR2 to assess the case. I have written to the main candidates to ask their position on pledging a review of the route south of Victoria, and have received these responses so far. Zac Goldsmith Conservative candidate “I was very interested to read the Streatham Action business case for Crossrail 2.  This is certainly a well thought out case and the benefits of Streatham being included are substantial.... However, should the current route go ahead, please rest assured that I will not leave areas like Streatham without improved rail services” Caroline Pidgeon Liberal Democrat candidate “Streatham should strongly be considered

www.heartstreatham.co.uk 15 as anoption for Crossrail2.  There is a strong business case to be made for the route to serve the area, and the argument that linking CR2 with the Northern Line at either Tooting Broadway or Balham is one that should be actively explored.   Sian Berry, Green Party candidate “I can see that Crossrail 2 would bring enormous benefits to Streatham, and the Greens at City Hall have consistently supported this idea. I don’t believe the current route is set in stone, and the next Mayor should review the location of the stations and make a full assessment of the wider costs and benefits of each option.” Streatham offers great potential for regeneration, and desperately improved fast transport links, and pollution reduction along the toxic A23. CR2 has never investigated how commuters from & through Streatham are loading the Northern and Victoria lines. The new London Mayor must instruct CR2 to fully review the route including a Streatham station. www.heartstreatham.co.uk16 Lionel Kenneth Crabb(known as Buster Crabb) was born on 28th January 1909 in Greyswood Street, off Mitcham Lane, Furzedown. He was apparently an inspiration to Ian Fleming for his James Bond novel “Thunderball” and the English actor, Laurence Harvey, played the role of Lieutenant Commander Crabb in the 1958 film "The Silent Enemy". In 1941 he joined the British Royal Navy and worked variously in Gibraltar, Italy and Palestine as a specialist frogman in underwater bomb and mine disposal. His career became both WWII and Cold War folklore. He was awarded an OBE and a George Cross for outstanding courage. After WWII he first had a number of civilian roles, working variously, as a model, undertaker and art salesman but later re-joined the Royal Navy until 1955. He was recruited by MI6 in 1956 to supposedly examine the hull and propeller of the state-of-the-art Soviet cruiser Ordzhonikidze in Portsmouth harbour. It had brought Nikita Khrushchev and Nikolai Bulganin to Britain on a diplomatic mission. He was never seen again. The newspapers were full of the story and the subject was raised in Parliament. The Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Eden, told MPs: "It would not be in the public interest to disclose the circumstances in which Commander Crabb is presumed to have met his death” Various conspiracy theories exist; he was captured by the Soviets, brainwashed, defected and became a double agent, he died during Soviet interrogation, he was killed in the harbour by the Soviets who were lying in wait having received a tip-off from a British spy (probably Kim Philby), he died by misadventure and even, according to a more recent newspaper article "Buster Crabb was murdered – by MI5"! Over a year later in June 1957 a headless and handless body in a diving suit was brought to the surface in their net by two fishermen in Chichester harbour. It was never formally identified. He was presumed dead in 1956 but Government documents relating to the case will not be released until 2057 History – The mystery of the missing frogman by dAVid WRiGHT Contact Findlay’s Pet Care, for our trusted and fully insured, bespoke pet minding services. www.heartstreatham.co.uk 27 £612m ayear wasted on Cosmetic Treatments By Dr Nilu Vajpeyi It has been estimated that in the UK up to £612 million a year is wasted on cosmetic treatments where patients are simply not satisfied with the results they achieve. This is the latest finding from the combined research of Botox manufacturer Allergan, the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology and the Houses of Parliament’s Office of Science & Technology. The UK’s Aesthetic Market in 2015 was worth £3.6 Billion, but the evidence shows that many treatments are ineffective or do not deliver the desired results. Almost a third of patients undergoing Laser hair removal state that they are unsatisfied with their results the emergence of unregulated clinics and has led to recent reports of a Cosmetic Crisis waiting to happen. In November 2010 the use of aesthetic lasers was deregulated and clinics are now no-longer required to register with the medical watchdog – The Care Quality Commission (CQC). In addition to this the Department of Health’s recent Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions found that “Dermal fillers are a particular cause for concern as anyone can set themselves up as a practitioner, with no requirement for knowledge, training or previous experience”. The report also found that in their view dermal fillers were a crisis waiting to happen. The combined effect of this is a situation where those undertaking any aesthetic treatments can be exposed to significant risks and very little protection if the procedures don’t go to plan. The NHS medical director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, who led the independent review, said: "The most striking thing is that anybody, anywhere, anytime can give a filler to anybody else and that is bizarre”. Clearly these findings are a real cause for concern, and are particularly concerning when we at Brigstock Skin and Laser Centre consider the numbers we see at our clinic who have wasted significant amounts of money on ineffective treatments before coming to us. There are, however, a number of simple precautions you can take to avoid wasting your money in this way. First of all, always seek out a medical clinic registered with the CQC. These clinics will always be staffed with doctors and clinically trained technicians. Also check out the testimonials. Don’t just trust those on the clinic’s own website. Be sure to also check out the reviews on Google and Facebook where the clinic is not able to cherry pick only the best comments. Finally always find out if the clinic offers any guarantees. Brigstock Skin and Laser Centre is extremely proud to offer its patients a results and satisfaction guarantee. This means we’ll treat you for free if you are not 100% satisfied and cannot see any results from your treatment therapies. Not many clinics are prepared to offer guarantees like this but Brigstock Skin and Laser feels it is only fair that you know your money will not be wasted whatever investment you choose for your skin. New laws have been promised following Sir Bruce Keogh’s review, but it is likely to be some time before these take effect. In the meantime if you’re considering any aesthetic treatments make sure you only consider treatments from medically registered clinics, clinics with excellent testimonials and those offering results guarantees just like Brigstock Skin and Laser Centre. www.heartstreatham.co.uk36 Streatham in theNIHL Cup Final! by jAne WRoe WRiGHT RePoRT SPonSoRed by Pestalance Pest Control www.pestalance.co.uk 0208 6799215 CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT WHILST SOLVING YOUR PEST CONTROL ISSUES Tickets for the first leg of the National Ice Hockey League Division One Cup Final are selling like hotcakes as we go to press, and the Streatham Redskins get ready for their chance at picking up some long awaited silverware. Chelmsford Chieftains were the opponents at Streatham Ice Rink on Saturday 26 March before the second leg in Essex on Sunday 27 March. It really was the game not to miss as with Steven Fisher back from suspension and Streatham take on the league champions in South London. We were printing as the games took place, so we can't tell you the score, but have a look on www.streatham-hockey.co.uk. Streatham qualified for the final after advancing from a group including Solent Devils and Wightlink Raiders, before beating Invicta Dynamos in a thrilling semi-final earlier this month. The Streatham Redskins are the oldest ice hockey club in the UK, and were first established in 1932. The new rink at the Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre has allowed them to make progress on the ice, and to build a bigger fan base. The club is going from strength to strength. Support has also grown from an average 3-400 per home game to some games being packed with over 750 fans this season. There is plenty of room for more, and Streatham can be very proud of the team whose hard work and passionate commitment has brought them to the cup final. There's still time to get down and see top ice hockey action this season, as Streatham will face Oxford City Stars in the Play-Off quarter finals. The 1st leg will take place in Oxford on Saturday 2 April, and the 2nd leg will be in Streatham on Sunday 3 April at 6.45pm. Tickets £10 and £6 concessions.
