We’ve joined forces with inStreatham, the Streatham Business Improvement District, to bring you a very special issue of Heart Streatham this Christmas. In this issue we’ve asked some local celebrities to pick out a few gifts - “finds” from local shops, we explore our area through the eyes of visitors, and give you a guide to What’s On, Live music, and the best of Streatham. So, shop local; shop in Streatham!
This is an especially designed issue as a requiem cover for Chestnut Avenue, whose trees were felled by Wandsworth Council despite widespread local opposition. Inside find the Streatham Roundup and Parish Pump, a Soapbox on Meiszko's planning issues keeping neighbours up with their unlicensed machinery noise, a history piece on MI5's formerly "secret" motorpool in Streatham, and a behind the scenes piece on EA Wates' furniture design and repair. TfL present their St Leonards Jct plans, the Streatham Redhawks talk about the coming season, and Brigstock Skin and Laser on how to get the same Kardashian beauty treatments here, but affordably.
Now British Summer Time has begun, we can enjoy the lighter evenings and look forward to some sunshine. Easter in Streatham is always a special time, with blossom and glorious magnolia trees in gardens everywhere (photographed in the Rookery by Philip Moran), and the Commons bursting into life. There are Easter egg hunts for the kids, and time during the holidays to start getting kites ready for Kite Day on Streatham Common on 14 May, the first of the Streatham Season of Festivals happening between May and October. Don’t miss Heart Streatham every month for all the info!
Details of the new pub we promised to reveal are in our Parish Pump, along with other great booze news! There’s more great news about businesses coming to Streatham later this year!
We’re always keen to showcase the work of local artists and photographers, so if you’d like to be featured, please email us at info@ heartstreatham.co.uk.

They hope to find partners to reopen the beautiful first floor cocktail bar and revive live performances in the main auditorium. Offices are also planned for the rear of the building. The owners are determined to breathe new life into the magnificent listed building and will help any organizations interested in the space. Our cover this month features the designs for the lovely new banners that are now proudly celebrating Streatham’s iconic buildings and events from lamp posts on the High Rd. Aptly, one of them celebrates the beautiful Streatham Hill Theatre. As we go to press, we were
contacted by the Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre to ask us to publicise their petition to Lambeth Council to uphold their decision to protect the 1928 Grade II listed theatre from possible destruction by declaring it an Asset of Community Value. This gives the building protection from immediate development - if it is put up for sale, the Streatham community will be given the opportunity to raise the funds to take it on. Now the owners of the building are appealing to Lambeth Council to reverse their decision. The Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre have until 29 November to convince the council that the theatre is worth saving. Sign the petition at: www.streathamhilltheatre.org
Welcome to Heart Streatham’s 41st edition. the trees are budding and the early flowers are blooming as we write this in right, warm spring sunshine. this month's cover is the iconic streatham Pumping station on Conyers rd which can be seen from the railway lines as well. We have superimposed alper Yagmur, owner of el Chico's Mexican restaurant (see review - p12), who became hero to many by organising deliveries of bottled water to elderly folk and others who couldn't make it to the delivery points when the water went out. When his restaurant’s water was cut he and his staff decided to work instead for the benefit of the community and we salute that! Do you have a local hero (with, or without, cape) you think should be celebrated? Get in touch: info@heartstreatham.

There was so much happening this summer
we can’t possibly recount all here in the
roundup. We’ve never seen the High Rd
as busy as during the Streatham Strut as
thousands of people followed the trail to 14
different live gigs. Other highlights (among so
many more) included the amazing inaugural
Festival Ceilidh at the British Home, 3 different
outdoor family events, workshops, and fab
live comedy at the Hideaway, ilili, and the
Railway. Special mention to the 2nd festival Art
Trail, expanded to include 3 pop-up galleries
this year. Over 120 events at over 40 venues,
we can safely say it was the biggest, widest
ranging and probably most exciting Streatham
Festival ever! A big well done to the committee
of local volunteers that made it happen!
Thanks also to the great local organisations
and companies that sponsor the Festival,
which receives no grants from council
-or anywhere else. Rounding off Festival
week was the Garage Nation live event on
Streatham Common. Some of us managed to
snag tickets and threw shapes old-skool till we
dropped. Literally. It was a great gig with little
fuss or aggravation. Others (Lee!) grooved to
the deep-tissue massage bass lines outside
the fence, whilst there were mixed reports of
noise carrying out. We can say that 24 hours
after the event ended, the promoters crew
had removed every bit of rubbish from the
Common. A big well done from us!
If you missed the Love Streatham Funday
you missed a great day out on the Common.
If you have kids and missed it make a note
for next July now. There were bouncy castles,
penalty shoot-outs, races, huge fun for kids
and adults alike was had and happens every
summer. More at lovestreatham.org
We heard over the summer that the new A23
BID cops had hardly started the job when
they arrested a notorious drug dealer on the
High Rd. This is the kind of thing High Road
business, shoppers and residents want. Police
are now actively running operations looking
for shoplifters and anti-social behaviour on the
High Road to make the shopping safer and
nicer for all.
Our local ice dancers competed at the
Internationals in Lyon, this summer and
came back with 1st
place! We hear they’ve
just placed highly in regional comps and have
further big competitions coming up soon. So
take the opportunity to see them perform at
the ice arena if you can.
Some of our Twitter followers tipped us off
about Travellers moving in to the Access
Self Storage site on Guilderfield Road.
Squatting commercial premises is a civil
issue, so we contacted Access, and found
they already had matters in hand. The police
were involved and the group has already been
moved on and the site re-secured. We look
ford to Access beginning works there soon.
Finally we’re very proud of our local students
and the results they’ve achieved. Dunraven
has bounced back with some of the school’s
best results to date with headline figures of
23% A*/A grades for A-levels, and headline
80% A* to C including English & maths
for GCSEs. Streatham & Clapham High
School had a 100% pass rate for the fourth
consecutive year with nearly a quarter of girls
achieving A* or an A grade in every A Level
subject that they took. Dulwich College saw
32% of all grades awarded at A level were at
A*. 62% of papers sat have been awarded
A*s or As and over 86% A* to B. Over 72% of
Sydenham High School girls achieved A*-B
grades . Bishop Thomas Grant School are
celebrating an A*/A pass rate of 23%, and a
very impressive A*- B pass rate of 50%. This
marks a record year for students progressing
to Russell Group and other top universities like
Imperial College, UCL, and Oxford.

The mystery and the mastery
of Asian Haute Cuisine
Over the summer,
Streatham Women's
Institute set off for
lunch at The Bull. 5
members had attended
the Launch party but
I had sadly missed it,
and was excited to be
going to the "talk of the
town" ...well the talk
of Streatham Mum's
network anyway.
When we arrived, they
had very thoughtfully
set up 2 tables for us, 1
inside and 1 out. It was
warm with a chance of
light rain so we settled
on the outside table,
safely under cover but
in the middle of the
garden area. This area is
deceptively large, folding around the back of
the pub as well as down the side and along
with the undercover dining area there is a
selection of self -contained "beach huts"
with seating, heaters and TVs. After a while
a local "cowboy" arrived at the outside bar,
complete with waist jacket, cowboy hat and
sandals- oh and a dog, it was at that point I
noticed the red light sign saying "Southfork"
above the outdoor bar. There are a variety of
Bull skulls around (not as bad as that sounds)
and with imagination I might have been sat
on the blowy film set of Dallas in the 80's but
we were not visited by Linda Grey or Patrick
Duffy and I most certainly did not get a waft
of Texan soil or oil......
Between us we ordered salads, burgers,
BIG fish sandwiches, ribs and mash, fish
and chips and even half a pig, disguised as
Ham Hock. We loved it, almost all food was
eaten, apart from the half a pig which was
wrapped up to be taken home for later. The
service was spot on, a lovely waitress who
was quietly attentive and very efficient. A
couple of members had
dessert, many more had
coffee and some of us
stuck to wine. I think
Streatham Women's
Institute will be visiting
again, with hats, boots,
shoulder pads, and 80's
flicked hairstyles just so
we can style it out in the
"Southfork" garden bar.

at Belmont Bowls Club,
Broadlands Avenue.
London’s foodies are looking further afield for
authentic and exciting new taste experiences,
and the hottest theme right now is the search
for the real flavours in Asian cuisine – a world
away from the tin foil takeaway or prawn cracker
mountain. If you’ve ever wanted to master the
mysteries of the Eastern kitchen, it’s a matter of
good technique and exotic herbs and spices.
Professional chef, caterer and Asian food writer,
Judy Ang-McGuire has started to run a series
of small Master Classes (1 or 2 days) from her
kitchen in South West London. There's also a
special 2-day course for students leaving home
to start university with easy to follow and healthy
recipes.
“There’s a limit to what you can get from books.
What makes Asian food so exquisite are the
ingredients and the skills that come from a
deeper understanding of our culture,” says Judy.
“In just one session, I will ensure my students
go away with the recipes and confidence to start
exploring for themselves.”
Through Judy’s
Master Classes you will learn the art of
preparing mouth -watering recipes like miso cod
with grilled aubergine, Balinese chicken satays
or wild boar butternut squash rendang. This last
dish, she created specially for the Ferragammo
family, the Italian fashion design house famous
for shoes and handbags.

Every year towards the end of
September hundreds of people
ascend Streatham Common
and cheer on groups of
adults and young children
running pell-mell around the
Common. Some of them have
the signatory red and black
striped vests of the Herne Hill
Harriers, our local athletics club.
Herne Hill Harriers (based for decades now
at Tooting Bec Athletics Track in Streatham
Park) are run completely by volunteers
and offer young people an accessible and
affordable way to get into competitive sport,
with world-class coaches and training and
all for a pittance. Athletics is one of the
least expensive participatory sports and (in
my opinion) attracts diverse range of some
of the nicest people in the country. But it's
not all worthiness, Herne Hill's teams have
produced world champions and Olympic
competitors.
This year's Fuin Run, sponsored by Anthony
Gold Solicitors features a new 2 lap course
to give spectators a better chance of seeing
the kids perform. There have been course
modifications to the 6-mile cross-country
course, as well, after Lambeth said the
race left the Common muddy last year and
charged the club £500. Shameful as HHH is
a non-profit run by volunteers and the race
bring hundreds of shoppers/lunchers to
Streatham every year.
Fitness First will be sponsoring with warmup/
workout sessions, goodie bags and water
bottles. Macmillan Cancer Support will be
present gathering support and this year
Anthony Gold will sponsor prizes for top
primary school, and for the firs time this year,
the top secondary school finishing teams.
Come out, join the fun and maybe discover
the fun of running through a beautiful bit of
Streatham countryside.

Two hundred years ago saw the end of the
Napoleonic wars with the battle of Waterloo on
the 18th June 1815. During this time, however,
Streatham resident, Stephen Wilson was running
his own campaign with France to bring the
newly invented (Jacquard) silk weaving loom
to Britain. The Jacquard loom was a huge
step forward in silk weaving technology which
greatly decreased the time required for weaving
complicated patterns and did away with the
need for the weaver's assistant, the drawboy. Mr
Wilson was a Spitalfields silkman who moved to
Streatham to establish his business outside of
London’s regulations.
He had been aware of the potential of the
French Jacquard looms from about 1810
and possibly earlier. He travelled in France
in 1803, and was held under house arrest in
Fontainebleau. After his transfer to Verdun his
wife Sarah petitioned Napoleon for his release
which finally took place in 1807. From 1810 to
1820, he was engaged in finding a Jacquard
loom for his business.
Stephen's attempts to introduce the Jacquard
loom into his company are seen in a letter sent
to him, in August 1820, from Paris, by a Thomas
Smith. The letter has all the appearance of
being from an industrial spy. Smith described
his visit to one of the largest manufactories in
the environs of Paris and his examination of "the
machine". He described the technology of "the
machine" and concluded by saying, "I have also
obtained a Hook as you desired - and also a
small bit of the Paste-board to show its texture"
Certainly Stephen possessed a Jacquard loom
by July 1821, when he was granted a patent
for its improvement under the title, "Pattern
Machines and Looms for Weaving Figured
Fabrics". It is therefore reasonable to suggest
that he introduced the machine into this country.
In 1823, Wilson reported, to a House of Lord's
Select Committee on the Silk Manufacturers'
Bill, that, "I have now in my possession a French
Streatham’s French Connection
BY BRIAN BLOICE
ribbon loom... and a man came over to this
country to set it to work for me.”
It can be suggested that, having acquired a
Jacquard loom about 1820, or just before this
date, Wilson decided on a bold plan. He erected
a new factory, in 1820, across the road from
his house in Streatham. He installed the new
looms in his possession there, which could be
operated by the less expensive workforce in
Streatham (then a part of Surrey) and, to some
degree, were away from the watchful eyes
of his competitors. Stephen understood the
requirements for the new loom. It required extra
height between the floors (as can be seen in the
purpose built Streatham mill) to accommodate
the Jacquard mechanism mounted above the
loom.
Finally Pierre Marie August Rougier is listed in
the Streatham 1831 census and we know from
later records he was a Jacquard machine maker.
He is described in detail in the 1851(Spitalfields)
census as a 59 year old having been born
in Lyons, France. It can be deduced that he
married a local girl who records her birth
place as Croydon (1851census) or Streatham
(1871census). Their youngest daughter, Louisa
Ann Rougier, was born in 1831 in Streatham.
In 1833 their son Henry was born in Bethnal
Green so it appears that Pierre and his family left
Streatham about this time. Pierre died in 1852
and is again recorded on his death certificate as
a Jacquard machine maker. Pierre’s birthplace,
Lyons, was the town in France in which a
William Hale had informed Stephen Wilson as
having seen the Jacquard loom.
Thus, there is very good evidence to suggest
that the silk mill at Streatham (now the large
building in which the Sainsburys cafe sits)
across from Streatham Common is the site of
the first attempt to industrialise the silk weaving
industry of Great Britain and that Streatham was
the site where the innovative Jacquard loom
was first used successfully. We have also an
extremely rare building of its type, in a unique
location, representing the first and only silk
factory in the London area.
In Stephen Wilson we have a successful
businessman, a dedicated citizen and a
technical innovator for whom the preservation of
the mill is a worthy memorial.
A fuller history of Silk Weaving in Streatham is
in the booklet “From Silk Mill to Superstore” by
Brian Bloice: £2.60 (including postage) from the
Streatham Society

The Streatham Common Dog Show, “Scruffs”, is
always a lot of fun. This year’s show is the 15th
annual event, and is run under the auspices of
the Friends of Streatham Common. In 15 years,
the show has grown from around 20 to over 300
contestants, attracting people and pooches from
far and wide.
Come along on the day and enter your dog in one
of the many and varied competitions - register
at 1230 for a 1pm start. The dog show is not for
profit, and entry money goes to the charity Pets
as Therapy, which provides therapeutic visits to
hospices, care homes, special needs schools etc.
by volunteers with their dogs and cats. All PATS
animals have to pass a health, temperament, and
suitability assessment before joining the team so
people can stroke, hold, and talk to these calm
and friendly dogs and cats.
Competition categories include Handsomest
Dog, Prettiest Bitch, Cutest Puppy, and even
Best Veteran for the more mature canine! There
will be doggy fancy dress, a seven-legged race,
and dog and spoon grand prix. Browse the treat
stands, spoil your mutt with home-made liver
and tuna cake at the Pets with Problems stall,
and help support the many canine charities in
attendance. Local vets will be on hand to offer
solid advice. So come and enjoy a great day out
with Streatham’s dogs and dog-lovers at the top
of Streatham Common and support the many
local businesses that have donated prizes and
sponsorship to help make this fun annual event
happen.

THE CAPITAL’S LARGEST ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF
ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN 19 & 20 SEPTEMBER.
Pullman Court Streatham Hill,
SW2 4SZ, London, England
Grade II* listed Modern Movement
building built 1936, Pullman Court
was the latest in luxury. Internally
the flats were planned to be
as ‘labour-saving’ as possible
with heating & hot water from a
central boiler - a great convenience
compared with the traditional coal fires
of the 1930’s. There were roof gardens,
an open air swimming pool, a restaurant and
social club, with landscaped grounds. Sunday
10am-5pm
Quadruple Cube Glass Room 27
Telford Avenue, SW2 4XL
Built in 2013, a perfect glass square made up
of four equal cubes. A new kitchen connects
with the garden, and maintains the spirit of
the house while injecting a modern interior &
increasing natural light. The support is formed
from stainless steel Miesian detached
columns supporting the centre
of each perimeter edge, which
frees the corners for a glass
only junction. Saturday 3:30pm-
6:30pm
The Livity School
Adare Walk, SW16 2PW,
London, England
A special educational needs primary
school for children with autistic spectrum
condition built in 2012. An internal ramped
elevated walkway wrapping around the atrium
and the ribbon of folded stainless steel cladding
are only two of the building’s unique features.
The building was partially sunk into the ground
and the profile of the black zinc roof was
designed so that the school did not dominate
adjacent homes. The stainless steel cladding to
the first floor consists of perforated panels that
spell out ‘LIVITY’ in Braille. Saturday 10am-4pm
