Our cover this month features the designs for the lovely new banners that are now proudly celebrating Streatham’s iconic buildings and events from lamp posts on the High Rd. Aptly, one of them celebrates the beautiful Streatham Hill Theatre. As we go to press, we were
contacted by the Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre to ask us to publicise their petition to Lambeth Council to uphold their decision to protect the 1928 Grade II listed theatre from possible destruction by declaring it an Asset of Community Value. This gives the building protection from immediate development - if it is put up for sale, the Streatham community will be given the opportunity to raise the funds to take it on. Now the owners of the building are appealing to Lambeth Council to reverse their decision. The Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre have until 29 November to convince the council that the theatre is worth saving. Sign the petition at: www.streathamhilltheatre.org
This is an especially designed issue as a requiem cover for Chestnut Avenue, whose trees were felled by Wandsworth Council despite widespread local opposition. TfL present their St Leonards Jct plans, the Streatham Redhawks talk about the coming season, and Brigstock Skin and Laser on how to get the same Kardashian beauty treatments here, but affordably.

7th December.
Spoiler alert: Streatham Common has (sadly) never been twinned with Meribel (see p3 of the Streatham Book of Christmas). It was a PR stunt by a ski holiday firm a few years ago. Although it is possible to ski on the Common if the powder is right....après ski at the Rookery Café, anyone? It wouldn’t be right to ignore the General Election on December 12, so we have been meeting the Streatham Parliamentary Candidates from the main four parties to find out a bit about them, since the only certainty is that we are getting a new MP. There’s a lot of agreement among them about local issues – and favourite Streatham spots. Thanks to each of them for standing to serve Streatham. Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year, Streatham! See you in 2020!

Wow, what a month! May started a bit chilly
but by Kite Day things got so warm that the
ice rink melted for a day or so interrupting the
Streatham Supremes prep for competitions. It
got Better eventually.
In a mostly sunny and very exciting weekend,
Hillside Gardens opened nicely trimmed and
bedecked. There were goodies for sale along
with lots of activities including open tennis for
the Great British Tennis Weekend on Saturday
the 13th.
Last Month, the 19th annual
Streatham Kite Day filled
the sky with kites from
the morning until almost
sundown, and what kites
some of them were too,
and attendance was way up
on last year. We estimated there were almost
10,000 people still around at 4pm, and those
near the bandstand were treated to a superb
show by local musicians as well.
On the 18th of May Love Streatham and
Streatham Action combined forces to wrangle
a herd of politicians into a room so that they
could answer question from constituents. A
packed and lively Streatham Hustings saw
the coup de grace from a fellow from Eastern
Europe who stood up to say he appreciated
not just the opportunity to participate but that
Chuka and Robert Stephenson’s
stand-in rep for UKIP shared a
joke together.
We may disagree on some
things but we can still get along.

GE 2017 The Candidates for Streatham
We at Heart Streatham see it as our job to
bring out the detail on local issues affecting
Streatham based on the facts as we know
them, and we don’t endorse any of the
political parties or candidates.
You will see a couple of political ads in the
magazine. We’re a small business, we’re
not funded by the council, or grants, or the
government and the magazine is paid for
solely by advertising. We offered ad space
to political parties contesting Streatham at
the same time, offering identical rates.
We asked all the parties that kept their
deposit at the 2015 General Election to
provide a profile of their candidate in no
more than 80 words. Below the candidates
are listed in the order we received their
replies.
Alex Davies – Liberal Democrat Party
Alex Davies is the only main party candidate who lives in the
constituency. As a councillor, he fought successful campaigns with
residents to save Streatham Library from closure and to keep cross-
London Thameslink services. He launched the Crossrail2 for Streatham
campaign in 2014. Lib Dems oppose Brexit and would give the public
a choice between the final Brexit deal and staying in the EU.
Kim Caddy - Conservative Party
I believe Theresa May is the only leader who can get the best deal for
Britain in the tough discussions ahead. We need a strong economy so
local businesses flourish, and to fund the public services we value. As a
local Councillor, I am experienced in standing up for the issues people
care about: transport, local business and protecting green spaces. If
elected, I will stand up for Streatham.
Nicole Griffiths – Green Party
Mum of two Nicole Griffiths combines work as a school arts support
officer with studying for a degree at Goldsmiths University. She grew
up in Lambeth and is a familiar face in Streatham, where she has
lived since 2003. An active campaigner for clean air, a Safer A23, and
defending local schools against threatened cuts, Nicole is listening
and standing up for what matters locally.
Chuka Umunna – Labour Party
As your MP since 2010 I’ve helped over 16,000 constituents with
casework, held over 500 surgeries, opened the first constituency office
in Streatham and spoken 784 times in the House of Commons. Re-
elect me to fight a Tory hard Brexit that Theresa May wants. I will fight
cuts to services and education budgets, and continue to campaign for
better transport. Support a local boy working hard for you.

Speeding on the A23
A 90-minute speed limit enforcement
operation by police during UN Road Safety
Week in May caught eleven drivers breaking
the 30mph limit on Streatham Hill. The
operations followed Community Roadwatch
days, during which traffic police responded to
concerns from the Safer A23 Campaign that
high speeds were one of the causes of deaths
and injuries in Streatham.
All the offenders received fines and points on
their licences, one faces a driving ban and
another motorist was fined for driving while
using a mobile phone. A similar operation in
April resulted in six speeding tickets being
issued in just over an hour. On both days,
speeds in excess of 50mph were recorded.
Anyone
concerned about
speeds in their
neighbourhood
can ask for a
Roadwatch session. They usually last just over
an hour and volunteers get to hold the speed
camera gun and catch speeders in the act! If
a significant problem is observed, police will
return another day to carry out an enforcement
operation, issuing fines.
Based on 2015 data, Lambeth has the highest
number of road casualties on TfL roads (821)
and the most collisions resulting in death
or serious injury (56). TfL roads account for
58.6% of all road casualties in Lambeth and
56.6% of all fatal and serious injuries.
Campaigners are calling for a re-design of the
A23 through Streatham to deter speeding. In
the meantime, drivers beware: slow down.
If you are concerned about speeds
on a road near you, please contact:
CommunityRoadwatch@met.police.uk.

Sir Roger Moore: 1927 – 2017
There are a select few people
called upon to serve with Her
Majesty’s Secret Service. An even more
select and rarified bunch have represented
their country in film by doing so and only
the 4th to do so was Roger Moore as Royal
Navy Commander and secret agent par
excellence, James Bond. Based upon Ian
Fleming’s admittedly atavistic character in his
books, Bond had many facets and adapted
well under Connery & Craig’s gruff and tough,
alongside Brosnan and Moore’s smooth,
suave grace.
But it wasn’t always that way. Moore was
a quintessential south London boy. Born in
Clapham to a policeman and his wife, his
family later moved to Stockwell where he
went to primary school and then attended
secondary school in Vauxhall before
studying drama at RADA. There he met his
first wife, Lucy Woodward. Described by
him as “stunningly
beautiful”, she an
actress and ice
dancer who used
the stage name
Doorn Van Steyn,
and was believed at the time to have far
better prospects than him. After he finished
Army service in 1946 they were married and
moved into a room at her parent’s house on
Buckleigh Road in Streatham.
They were said to have often been seen at
the Locarno or skating at the ice rink where
he learned to skate “just to be near her.” Their
marriage survived six years but Moore moved
on from Streatham to Bexley afterwards.
He was married twice more before the
international film star we know came to
prominence. As chaotic as his private life
could be, he was suave and debonair on
screen and we hope he rests in peace.

Heart Magazine ad FINAL.indd 1 13/05/2016 14:28
We are very fortunate in Streatham to have
a wide variety of retailers, supermarkets,
restaurants, coffee shops and bars in the
High Road with many recent additions.
However, there are an increasing number of
businesses that are not so visible and work
very successfully behind the scenes.
Established here for over 10 years after
moving from Brixton to take advantage of
suitable studio space is the well-known
music producer Dan Carey. With a
large discography and two Mercury Prize
nominations in 2014 with albums from
Nick Mulvey and Kate Tempest he has
established a high profile as writer, mixer
and producer for a wide range of musicians,
working with the likes of Kylie Minogue,
Franz Ferdinand, Emiliana Torrini, Bloc
Party, Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes), The
Kills, TOY and Django Django.
Whilst Dan’s very early influences were artists
such as the Beach Boys and Jimi Hendrix
he has moved from a dub background to
an interest in developing sounds not heard
before. Highly regarded in the indie-rock
production scene he has several current
projects on the go including new work from
Tempest and Mulvey with some exciting
sounds coming from the Tottenham based
band Pumarosa (great videos on YouTube).
With all his skills and a keen interest in
astronomy we may well yet see some
interesting alternative sounds.
The studio is equipped with loads of gear and
musical instruments, amps, mixing desks and
gizmos which allow him to record songs in a
slightly unconventional form.
One of his more recent projects is his own
label Speedy Wunderground. Dan produces
all releases at his studio. The recordings are
Streatham behind the Scenes -
The Swarmatron
15. www.heartstreatham.co.uk 15
done in one day and mixing is completed the
following day. The musicians, the producer
and engineer are together in one room, with
no control room. As the name suggests,
Speedy Wunderground work quickly and the
limited 7” runs are in the stores and available
much sooner than through traditional
channels. Speedy Wunderground releases
each year’s recordings as a compilation at the
end of the year and a third issue is imminent!
Somewhere on the recordings you will hear
the unique sound of the Swarmatron. There
are maybe only two of its kind in the country
and Dan has one. Up until last year only
83 had been made. The Swarmatron is a
handmade analogue synthesizer or electronic
musical instrument that uses a ribbon
controller rather than a keyboard, playing
a chord of eight notes arranged around a
single note. A finger is placed or slid from
side to side along a ribbon controller. The
distinctive feature of the Swarmatron is its
use of eight individual oscillators, under a
single control. These oscillators produce an
equidistant chord, where their spacing is
under the player’s immediate control. Those
eight notes can be manipulated so that they
diverge further from the home note, creating
swarming noises that can appear unsettling.
We hope to hear more of this in the future.

Wandsworth Council recently carried out some
“emergency” work on eight trees on Chestnut
Avenue on Tooting Bec Common, as part of
their plan to cut down and replace all the trees
later in the year. Four trees at the southern
end of the avenue were pollarded following
recommendations by the council’s tree expert.
Although it was done at the wrong time of year,
it’s not terrible and we expect these four trees
may need to be felled and replaced eventually,
as they are in poor condition. The remaining
four trees only needed minor work, which has
been done sensitively, and shows the Council
cares about the trees.
This is good news for our campaign, as it
supports our view that most of the veteran
trees on the avenue only need a relatively
small amount of pruning to keep them healthy
and safe. This view is supported by our
independent tree expert, and the council’s
own external tree expert, neither of whom
recommend the felling of the avenue.
It is possible to keep most of the veteran
trees to provide a valuable environmental
benefit for years to come. We will ask the
council to interplant new young trees as the
veteran trees are pollarded and then removed
over the next few years, to ensure we have a
tree-lined avenue for future generations. The
future avenue won’t be a symmetrical Victorian
landscape feature, but it will be something
wonderful, bursting with wildlife and retaining
the links to the past.

PASTOR MAKES A SPLASH
by Ed Mayhew
It may surprise you to hear that Alex Lyell,
pastor of Streatham Central Church (SCC),
will be baptised into his own church this June.
Alex, 35, who is also the new chair of Love
Streatham – a charity run by local churches -
was christened as a baby, but has chosen to be
baptised as an adult.
When asked why Alex said, “Baptism is just a
picture, so it’s ok that Christians differ on age or
quantity of water. I’ve come to believe that it’s a
powerful picture of how we identify with Jesus
Christ in his death and resurrection. When I go
into the water it’s a sign that my independent-
self died with Jesus as he paid for my sin on the
cross. And when I come out of the water it’s a
sign of rising to new life with Jesus, who is my
real identity now.”
“The churches I happily served in for 15
years believed in baptising babies, so I didn’t
want to undermine the leaders I respect. But
now I get to be part of the picture along with
other members of our church who are getting
baptised.”
Although SCC normally meet on Sunday
afternoons at Streatham Youth and Ccommunity
Trust on Wellfield Road, Alex will be baptised at
Streatham Baptist Church (Lewin Road).
Love Streatham recently co-hosted Streatham’s
largest election hustings with Streatham Action,
which Alex compèred. He will be co-hosting
Love Streatham’s biggest gathering this year,
‘Church on the Common’ on 16th July.
The service is open to visitors whatever their
beliefs or backgrounds (3.30pm, 11 June, 20
Lewin Rd) and will feature filmed stories from
the other church members who are getting
baptised, including the son of former West
Indian cricket captain, Alvin Kallicharan.
