Welcome to the October 2016 edition of Heart Streatham. After a really fantastic second Streatham Free Film Festival last month, and an Indian summer that made Rookery open air events especially delightful, we're enjoying the turn of the season as we look forward to misty mornings over the commons and making the most of our great local live music and restaurant scene as the nights grow longer.
Catch up on what's been happening in Streatham, read about some great new businesses and shops opening soon, and find out about some great events coming up in our What's On section. A matter for which Humberside police failed to investigate criminal allegations of malfeasance and fraud involving a false claim made by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) that 10 items of post had been sent to the complainant between 19 December 2013 and 13 December 2016 which the complainant claims never to have received, and believes they were dishonestly constructed later (to cover their tracks) to satisfy enquiries made by the judicial ombudsman (JACO) and an investigation carried out by HMCTS complaints team. Humberside police has been provided with evidence proving criminality beyond reasonable doubt in relation to these issues. The force has brushed aside the allegations and as a consequence the matters have been channelled through the police complaint/appeals process which is dealt with under the Police Reform Act 2002. In every case the Professional Standards Branch (PSB) has improperly dealt with the concerns and as a consequence the complaint has required (where there has been an appeal right) escalating to Humberside Police Appeals Body (HPAB). In all cases relevant to a complaint made to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Humberside police's assistant force solicitor has dealt with the appeal but failed to comply with her statutory duty to enforce compliance with the Police Reform Act 2002 (paragraph 8A Schedule 3) which amounts to nothing less than complicity in Humberside police‘s cover-up of serious criminal wrongdoing carried out by the MoJ and therefore done with intent to pervert the course of justice. From consulting the SRA’s Principles 2011 it would appear that the assistant force solicitor FAILED to: (i) uphold the rule of law and the proper administration of justice contrary to Principle 1 of the SRA Principles 2011 (the “Principles”); (ii) act with integrity contrary to Principle 2 of the Principles, and (iii) behave in a way that maintained the trust the public placed in her and the provision of legal services contrary to Principle 6 of the Principles.

She encourages bringing the gift certificate when visiting the store by May 31, 2016 and viewing their fashions online at their website.

The results showed that the majority of the audience is female, likes the band Catfish and the Bottlemen, and the color blue. The majority preferred a 3 column layout, 70-80 page magazine in 16 point font size. An instrument on the cover along with more images than writing was preferred. A male artist or group on the cover would appeal most. The audience likes going to concerts and buying a few CDs per week.

We’ve joined forces with inStreatham, the Streatham Business Improvement District, to bring you a very special issue of Heart Streatham this Christmas. In this issue we’ve asked some local celebrities to pick out a few gifts - “finds” from local shops, we explore our area through the eyes of visitors, and give you a guide to What’s On, Live music, and the best of Streatham. So, shop local; shop in Streatham!
Welcome to the may issue of Heart Streatham. It includes the official guide to Streatham Kite Day. We can’t wait to see the fabulous kite displays filling the sky above Streatham Common with colour – and we’ll be joining in the fun flying our own kites and enjoying the live music, food, and stalls on the 12th may. It’s a family friendly celebration that brings the whole community to the Common, and one of our favourite events in the local calendar. See you there!

Our cover this month features the designs for the lovely new banners that are now proudly celebrating Streatham’s iconic buildings and events from lamp posts on the High Rd. Aptly, one of them celebrates the beautiful Streatham Hill Theatre. As we go to press, we were
contacted by the Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre to ask us to publicise their petition to Lambeth Council to uphold their decision to protect the 1928 Grade II listed theatre from possible destruction by declaring it an Asset of Community Value. This gives the building protection from immediate development - if it is put up for sale, the Streatham community will be given the opportunity to raise the funds to take it on. Now the owners of the building are appealing to Lambeth Council to reverse their decision. The Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre have until 29 November to convince the council that the theatre is worth saving. Sign the petition at: www.streathamhilltheatre.org

We're delighted to report that the Herne
Hill Harriers took many medals and did the
area proud in the National Cross Country
competition.
Heart Streatham staffers got their hands
dirty with the folk who flaunt the rules –
construction companies that block off roads
and pavements without permission, and
drivers who are happy to run over people to
save a few seconds on a one way stree.t
We had a cracking time on
a chilly Sunday morning
watching the annual
Veteran Car Run as vintage
cars chugged, steamed and
putted by on their annual
run to Brighton. And this year several local
cafes joined in the fun by opening early to
offer spectators hot drinks and breakfast. Let's
make this an annual Streatham special event!
We spoke to the Lambeth Engagement team
in Brixton about the rumour of a Lambeth
app for reporting fly-tipping, littering, dumped
cars, etc. It’s still unclear as to whether they
will be doing something similar to the superb
Wandsworth app. Watch this space!
The sharp-eyed might have seen Streatham
Hill on the telly, as one of The Apprentice
teams tried to procure a tagine and black
African soap at the Mediterranean Bakery in
Streatham Hill at 11pm on a weekday. They
were unsuccessful, but it brought Streatham to
the masses.
Finally, we remembered the
fallen of Streatham at the
annual Remembrance Day
civic service. We are reliably
informed that this was only
the second time in UK
history that an Imam has led
the service.

After the 2010 general election the
coalition government set out to cut the
cost of government by reducing the size of
Parliament by 50 MPs, and by harmonising
constituency voter numbers. Historically,
some inner-city constituencies had fewer than
50,000 registered voters whilst others were
over 80,000. The Boundaries Commission
has re-drawn new boundaries into a draft
constituency map, now out for consultation,
on the following basis:
Number of London constituencies must
reduce from 73 to 68
Constituencies must contain between 71,031
and 78,507 electors
Proposed constituencies should use local
government wards
Retention of existing constituencies where
possible
Due regard to geographic factors should be
given.
Under the proposal, Streatham becomes
part of a new Streatham and Mitcham
constituency. Parts of Norbury, Knight's
Hill, and several wards from Merton will
combine with Streatham while wards north
of Streatham Place and Christchurch Road in
Tulse Hill, Clapham Park and Brixton will go
into different constituencies.
The good news is the new proposal keeps
all four Streatham wards together, when
the previous proposed a split among three
constituencies.
There has been strong reaction and criticism
from parts east and from Croydon, as well
as from Merton and Wimbledon where
local centres will be divided amongst new
constituencies. Some of the reaction is
party political, but some challenge changes
to existing localities. Lambeth, as a local
authority, will be represented by several
different MPs too. So far the reaction from
Streatham this time round is muted compared
with in 2011 and 2012.
Interestingly for those following the
Streatham Action transport campaigns, one
of the reasons given by the Commission for
rejecting an early proposal for a Streatham
and Norwood constituency was poor
transport links between the two areas.

The Diary of a Homeless Musician
My name is Derek, and sleeping out in the
entrance of a local Christian bookshop
brought me closer to home. Here’s how: the
upper part of the shop is Manna House,
an organisation that supports homeless
people. Here I found a loving welcome, warm
surroundings and it felt safe and comforting
like home. I got to know the churches that
support and care for homeless people and
became familiar with the day-to-day cycle of
provision.
On Monday evenings, there is a well-prepared
meal and conversation at United Reformed
Church (beside Tesco). On Tuesday and
Wednesday, I’m at Spires (St Leonard's
Church Outreach and Learning centre). You
will find me on Thursday mornings, at Ichthus
Southcroft’s Community Tea-Table, where one
day a young man put his hand on my shoulder
and said “Welcome home!", placing a warm
wool coat over me. I was moved to tears at his
generosity. On Friday evenings and Sunday
afternoons, Manna House has unlimited food
for us to eat and take away. These places
were my refuge and safety come rain, come
shine, as well as a way to have a chat and
socialise.
Eighteen months on, I have my own place and
returned to a love of music from my teenage
years, and now I tutor it to make a living. A
big thank you to the churches - the lifeline for
homeless people in Streatham.

A Christmas Show on Ice 10th dEcEmBEr
Come and travel the world while sitting in
an ice rink…impossible you say! Not at all.
Come to this year’s Christmas Show at the
Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre where you
will see local skaters perform to music from
various locations around the world. Several
British International Champions have been
invited to perform as special guests and the
evening promises to be full of superb ice
skating skills, fun and lots of sequins.
The skaters involved in the show will
comprise around 60 SkateUK students from
the local community, whose skills range from
those who have been skating a matter of
weeks to those who are proficient.
The other large group will be the 33
Streatham Supreme Skaters, eight of whom
represented Great Britain at the Copenhagen
Dance Cups earlier this year and returned
with eight international medals (four Golds,

International medals.
Furthermore, the Club has the 2014 British
Solo Senior Ladies Ice Dance Champion as
a member as well as the 2016 Silver Junior

It is expected that either the Lambeth Mayor
or Cllr Lib Peck will open the evening – Cllr
Peck has attended each Christmas Show

And you never know who else might put in a
special appearance on the night!
The Show starts at 6.30pm and finishes

Civilians of Streatham – Remember Them Too!
In November we celebrated
Remembrance in the largest civic
memorial service in Lambeth at the
Streatham War Memorial. Every year
I’m asked what the solemn dark-grey
obelisk behind the crowd is. It’s the
statue to the civilians of Streatham
who died in conflicts over the years.
Sadly they’ve become an afterthought
of community memory as they played
a key role defending the country. As
someone who found himself in the
middle of two wars in the past 25
years, and lost good friends in each,
this isn’t something I say lightly.
Soldiers can’t project force without lots
of support. The estimate for WW2 was 10
people in support roles behind the lines for
every solider on the front. For each of them
at least 10 kept the economy, production,
logistics, management, civil defence
(firefighters, medics, etc) going back home.
Streatham had its own encounters with
enemy fire and the evidence can still be seen
today. When you see a terrace or street of
Victorian housing with the occasional modern
(or 1930s) house or block in the middle this is
almost always where bombs fell.
Thanks to Wandsworth Heritage Service’s
microfiche copies of the South London Press
reports we mentioned in Issue 5 (July 2014),
you can read of L31 Zeppelin’s raid that
followed the railway from Eastbourne through
Streatham up to Battersea 100 years ago this
past September. Premises on Greyhound
Lane and Estreham Road opposite Streatham
Common Station were hit leaving 9 people
injured. The zeppelin continued, bombing
Gleneagle Road and Leigham Court Road
before killing 5 men at Streatham Hill Modern
School near Streatham Hill Station.
In Zeppelins Over Streatham, John Brown of
the Streatham Society wrote: ‘During a period
of less than 15 minutes, Heinrich Mathy had
dropped a total of 32 bombs on Streatham...
killed seven people and had seriously injured
a further 27 in what was the worst night of
destruction Streatham had ever known.’
When you remember our fallen in the wars,
spare a thought for these folk too.

16. FOUR BRANCHES -
OUR SECRET WEAPON
One could argue that the more offices an agent has, the more exposure your property will
enjoy. But would you really benefit if your agent has a branch in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Cardiff
and Southampton as well as Streatham. Highly unlikely! Don’t be impressed by the sheer size
of an agency – the only buyers that matter to you are those who may be interested in buying
your property and no-one else’s.
However, we find that one of our most effective “secret weapons” is the fact that we cover
four adjacent areas each from its own dedicated but interconnected branch.
The way the offices work together is arguably one of the reasons for our continued success in
the area. This is because we recognise that buyers seldom actually buy the property about
which they enquired. In practice they tend to buy a property which is often a compromise,
falling slightly below the ideal criteria they initially hoped to achieve.
Our research and experience suggest that the most common form of compromise is
“location”. The effect of this is that we often register buyers who are initially attracted to one
of our offices but end up buying a property offered to them via another.
At Samuel Estates we go to great lengths to understand our buyers’ wants, needs and
aspirations. Our four offices can then liaise closely in order to find a way of delivering results
for our sellers whilst expanding the possibilities for our buyers. So when you are next thinking
about which agent to choose – think twice, four heads are not only better than one, but
usually also better than a hundred!

Christmas Crib's 60th Anniversary
JanE parKE, thE FrIEndS oF StrEatham common
60 years ago John Taylor, of Norbury, built
a crib that he placed next to the Christmas
tree on Streatham common for the whole
community to enjoy. He has continued this
generous act annually since 1956, and on
December 3rd he will put up the crib for the
sixtieth time. He will again be assisted by
Gordon Clarke, who has helped John put up
the crib for over 20 years.
The first crib had an oak floor and a thatched
roof made with straw from Chianti bottles
that were fashionable at the time. The first
figurines were borrowed, but Mr Taylor
bought his own set the following year &
has continued to maintain the crib and its
occupants ever since.
John Taylor is a member of The Knights of
St Columba, based at St Bartholomew’s RC
Church. They are a worldwide organisation
that offers charitable support for local
parishes.
In the early 80s Lambeth council attempted
to prevent the crib being put up in order
to avoid offending those of other religions.
However, a proactive member of The Knights
went to all the different faiths to seek their
views and none raised any objections, so the
Council backed down.
The Friends of Streatham Common and all
members of the community are grateful to
Mr Taylor and Mr Clark for their dedicated
service and we look forward to enjoying the
crib on Streatham Common for many years
to come.

Charity Begins at Home on Streatham High Road
By: EJ Ward
When I said I was moving to Streatham the
first thing people mentioned was the food, the
wonderful restaurants and cafes here. They
didn't mention the charity shops. Charity shops
have been looked down upon as places for
those who could only afford other folk's cast-
offs. Not places one admitted going to.
Things have changed, and visiting a charity
shop is now de rigueur. There are forums on the
Internet dedicated to it, social media groups
where you can show off your latest bargain,
and countless lists of tips for finding the best
bargains. Not only is Streatham one of the
best places for food in South London, it's also
packed full of great charity shops.
I have size 11 feet and sometimes I struggle
to get shoes. In Streatham there are very few
places that sell shoes but in the British Heart
Foundation shop I picked up a pair of classic
Converse All-Stars and, lo and behold, they
were an 11. And they were £8.00. A brand new
pair of shoes for eight quid!
When I popped into Sense I spoke to the new
manager Lisa, who told me their best bargain
was two pairs of Church's men's shoes selling
for a quarter of retail price. I bought a brand
new scarf there for £5.00 (Ed, can I put that on
expenses? Ed – only if you donate it to Spires!).
Every charity shop I visited said what they need
most is volunteers. Without people who are
willing to give a few hours a week they would
be lost. It's not just front of house work, Shelter
and the British Heart Foundation are looking for
people for
web sales,
social
media and
admin
roles.
Oh, and
donations,
they want your stuff too. We have a variety of
charity shops in the area ranging from clothing
and household items to books and CDs. Check
out Wandsworth Oasis, in Leigham Court Rd,
which has just opened, and if you have things
you don’t need any more, Christmas is an
ideal time to donate them, and if you are a UK
taxpayer, the charity can claim Gift-Aid on your
donations.

In 2013 Streatham businesses decided
to invest in their community & help make
Streatham great after years of neglect. 550
Streatham businesses pay an additional
levy on top of their business rates to
help fund events and activities that build
community spirit and a sense of pride in
our area.
Alongside hanging baskets and banners,
additional policing and cleaning pavements
they create events and activities for local
people to enjoy. By getting feet on to
the street we hope that local residents,
employees and visitors will discover the
unique and special businesses that help
make Streatham a place worth visiting.
InStreatham Business Improvement District
is proud to host another bumper Christmas
celebration on Saturday 3 December when
we switch on the Christmas lights, celebrate
Small Business Saturday and say a big hello
to Santa in his grotto at the Manor Arms
pub.
Babington Plaza will be brimming with
seasonal fun, including a festive Streatham
Market of food and crafts from local
businesses and makers from 11-5pm. Stall
fees are kindly being donated by Lambeth
Council to a local charity.
You can have your photo taken with Santa
at his magical grotto inside The Manor
Arms between 2pm and 4pm.
There will be live music, and local choirs
will be performing from 3-5pm during the
switch on ceremony with special guests
Chuka Umunna MP, the Mayor of Lambeth
and the Snow Queen herself; alongside face
painters, stilt walkers and more.
So enjoy a glass of mulled wine or hot
chocolate and a warm mince pie and share
in this festive celebration with your friends

It’s that time of year again.
Many don’t celebrate
Christmas, but will celebrate
Hanukkah, New Year and
many other religious festivals.
These are times for being with
our families, but also a time for
enjoying what our community
brings.
Our small businesses are such an
important part of our community,
and it is so important to support
them this holiday season. Imagine
Streatham High Road without all
of our unique independent small
businesses – it would just be like
any other high street around the
country. We are rightly proud of
our excellent local entrepreneurs
Small Business Saturday
by Chuka Umunna MP
and their businesses which are the
beating heart of our community.
They create jobs and an identity for
our area.
That was why I wanted to bring
Small Business Saturday to the UK
and to Streatham in particular – the
constituency that’s the centre of the
universe as far as I’m concerned.
I’d noticed in the US all the support
that was generated for local small
businesses with the Small Business
Saturday campaign there. I wanted
the same for our small businesses
and innovators.
Now in its third year, Small
Business Saturday will hopefully
be bigger and better than ever. In
2015, consumers spent £623m
with small firms across Britain as
part of Small Business Saturday,
an increase of £119m compared
to 2014. An estimated 75 percent
of local authorities supported the
campaign.
So I’m asking everyone to get
involved with Small Business
Saturday 2016, on Saturday 3rd
December, support our small
businesses, celebrate what they
do, and take the time to visit
some of the fantastic businesses
you may not have got a chance to
visit before!

28. Some estate agents over value
properties and its the oldest trick
in the book. Making sure your
house price is right from the
beginning is extremely impor-
tant. That’s because studies from
the main portals suggest that the
first 14 days after your property
has been listed, are the most
important, you could receive
twice the level of normal enquir-
ies.
Your honeymoon period is achieved
because people looking for a house in
your area will see it for the first time.
In the early stages when you are
taking guidance from several estate
agents its important you don’t pick
the estate agent who has overvalued
your property. If you do, you run the
risk of taking it out of the reach of
potential buyers.
Many potential buyers will have set
up properly alerts that they get
instant notifications of new listings.
Lots of people browse online search-
ing for properties, specifically looking
for the most recent listings first. If
you’ve fallen into the estate agency
trap and overpriced your home, after
a few weeks interest will wane and
you’ll have missed the maximum
opportunity to sell. It’s then very
difficult to try and regain the lost

If your property languishes on the
market for a long time, it will no
longer be found in ‘recent listings’

the first time around will simply skip
past it. The only way to stimulate
further interest will be to drop the
price. This could mean that you end
up with a final price lower than you
would have otherwise achieved if it
had been pitched correctly in the first
place.

Health Checks and Learning Disabilities
By: cLLr roBErt hILL, St LEonard’S Ward
More than 1,300 Lambeth residents are
known to have learning disabilities and sadly,
on average, people with learning disabilities
live 25 years less than everyone else but this
doesn’t have to be. A big reason for that is
many health problems including diabetes,
heart disease, high blood pressure and
mental health problems affect people with
learning disabilities more than others.
For many of these conditions, spotting them
early and managing them actively makes a
real difference. This is a serious fairness issue
and one for which we need your help.
Regular health checks can help prevent and
identify early signs of illness, enabling them
and their carers to manage any conditions
and access care in a timely way if they need
it. These health checks are usually carried
out in the patient’s own GP surgery and take
less than an hour, but they are very important.
The local Clinical
Commissioning
Group (CCG) for Lambeth are working with
GP teams to see they proactively remind
people to come in for their check.
However, if you are a parent or carer of an
adult with learning disabilities you are key
to getting the message out. The Council,
Lambeth Mencap, and other local voluntary
groups can help you with resources and
information.
Finally if you have a family member, friend
or neighbour with learning difficulties,
please help us get the information about
health checks to them as soon as possible.
See links in this article on the Heart
Streatham website to a short animated
video and an excellent booklet produced by
Mencap.
Bone Broth: The Secret Super Food
dr nILu, BrIGStocK SKIn and LaSEr
There's nothing quite like curling up with a
piping hot bowl of soup on a fresh autumn
day, and when good bone broth is used as its
base any soup becomes nothing short of a
superfood.
It has so much good stuff in it, collagen,
gelatine, essential amino acids, healthy fats,
and minerals.
This superfood is without doubt one of the
best ways of enhancing your skin, and what's
more, it’s incredibly cheap to make. Many
butchers are happy to give bones away or
charge you just pennies for a bag of them.
They should always, always be organic
though!
Bone broth is also renowned for
strengthening your immune system, reducing
chronic low grade inflammation, promoting
overall healing, improving your muscular
skeletal health, and enhancing your liver and
cardiovascular systems
Brewing up a pot of broth will take several
hours, but apart from
topping your pan up from time to time, it
can go on in the background while you get
on with your day. Adding a little apple cider
vinegar ensures you get the very best out
of the bones as it helps extract calcium
and minerals. If you’d like a couple of my
favourite recipes you can find them on the
Brigstock Skin and Laser Website, and here’s
the recipe for my Beautiful Beneficial Bone
Broth:
Ingredients:
2Kg of chopped organic bones from grass
fed cows or lamb
1 tbs organic apple cider vinegar
6 bay leaves
1tbs of black peppercorns
Method
Place all the ingredients in a large saucepan
and cover with water. Bring to the boil and
then simmer for at least 6 hours. Once
cooked, use immediately or freeze.

It’s over a year now since the newly
redeveloped Thrale Almshouses in Polworth
Road opened their doors. All 17 of our
homes are now filled and the residents have
settled in.
The Thrale Almshouses are open to women
over 60, and we are really pleased that those
who have come to live at Thrale come from
a range of backgrounds and from all over
the local area. Some are working while some
are retired, two of the residents lived in the
Almshouses before they were redeveloped,
and the other fifteen are new to Thrale.
The spirit of the Almshouses is all about
independent living with a sense of
community. We have arranged for residents
to go on a trip to Brighton, to participate in a
local craft event and several other activities.
A mulled wine and winter barbecue is
planned for the weeks ahead.
We also run an annual programme to give
small grants to good causes in the local
community. Earlier in the year, we provided
funding of over £30,000 to 10 different
projects, benefiting at least 650 people
directly. These included the Spires Centre,
Lambeth Mencap, where we funded a
minibus and driver for adults with learning
difficulties, the Nehemiah Project which
supports people leaving prison and the
Basaira Centre which provides a drop-in
centre for elderly people in Streatham Vale.
We are also on the lookout for new Trustees,
ideally people who are passionate about the
local area and involved in other community
activities. If you are interested, or want to
know more about our Almshouses and small
grants programme, please contact info@

Streatham RedHawks –A New Era
By JuLES cLIFF, photoS rIcK WEBB
With the RedHawks struggling to find form,
club management made the bold decision
to make some mid-season changes while on
the Isle of Wight, the Wightlink Raiders had to
fold with the closure of their rink.
The Raiders played their final game, and a
new era dawned at Streatham as Wightlink
Raiders' head coach, Canadian Jeremy
Cornish took over Streatham RedHawks
helm. Jeremy’s success in the UK game both
as a player and coach is well-known, players
and fans welcomed him with open arms.
The next fortnight saw Cornish build a
stronger team with 8 new players from
Wightlink, who had been favourites to take
some silverware this season. It takes time for
players to settle in to a new club and adapt
to the new training regime, but great home
wins against Bracknell Hornets and arch
rivals Invicta Dynamos, saw players, fans and
coaches swarm into the Earl Ferrer's after
games with renewed enthusiasm for the rest
of the season!
The team has demonstrated a new kind of
gritty and determined hockey, and Streatham
plays host to fans travelling up from the Isle
of Wight to watch their favourites. Training
is a particularly positive experience with the
new coach really putting the team through
its paces and new strategies. So we are
revitalized and invigorated with a fantastic
team, and the rest of the season is ours to
take.
See the Redhawks at home on Sunday 4th
December at 6.45pm against Solent Devils.
We reconvene after the Christmas break on
Saturday 14th January at 5.30pm v. Oxford
City Stars. Sunday 22nd January v. Bracknell
Hornets at 6.45pm, and Saturday 28th
January at 5.30pm against Milton Keynes
Thunder.
