Emma Wilson Urban Spa is a finalist at
the 2018 Professional Beauty Awards in
the Boutique Beauty Salon of the Year
category. The national awards are the most
prestigious and established in the country for
the beauty, spa, nails and aesthetics markets
and seek to recognise those who go above
and beyond as a beauty business and make a
significant difference to the industry.
Even reaching the finals in the awards marks
out a business as one the country’s most
impressive salons, while a win can establish
them on a global scale as a truly exceptional
beauty business.
The Boutique Beauty Salon of the Year
category seeks to celebrate those small
salons that think big, with exciting ideas and
polished services that allow them to compete
on a grand scale.
The shortlist for spa and salon categories is
made up of the winners and particularly high-
scoring finalists of the Professional Beauty
Regional Awards in October. Finalists will now
go on to be judged again in a second round,
which includes interviews and ‘mystery
shopper’ style judging visits.
Winners will be
announced on

Streatham High Road Hell
We are used to awful congestion on
Streatham High Rd, but the A23 has been
hellish at rush hours due to Thames Water’s
emergency sewer repairs at the top of Prentis
Rd.
South-bound traffic (at first including lorries,
coaches and emergency vehicles) is currently
diverted down narrow residential Shrubbery
Rd and back up Stanthorpe Rd, resulting in
hundreds of idling vehicles, toxic fumes and
outbursts of road rage outside schools and
homes in the area including Sunnyhill and
Wellfield Rd. Chaos reigns with southbound
buses diverted via Leigham Court Rd and
Streatham Common North. There's another
diversion for HGVs via Tulse Hill, and one for
cyclists, some of whom have added to the
aggro by being a danger to pedestrians by
riding on pavements to avoid it.
Frustratingly, Thames Water, TfL and the
Council have declined our requests to
publicise the diversions in this magazine to
explain what's going on, why, and how long
it’s likely to take – our latest info is until 9th
February as we go to press.
This disruption may have provided a useful
“dry run” for the issues envisaged when
the long-anticipated St Leonard’s Junction
improvement works commence, according
to Neil Salt, chair of the local community
group, Streatham Action Transport. “The
downside of the
current sewage
repair work, which
will take weeks to
repair, not least
because of the
5-metre depth of
drilling required,
is that there is
every likelihood
that the St
Leonard’s Junction
improvement
works may now get delayed beyond the early
February start date originally set by TfL”,
commented Neil.
Work on this lethal junction has been part
of a long campaign for greater safety on the
A23. The results of a public consultation
carried out before Christmas have yet to
be published, but a source at TfL has told
the Safer A23 Campaign that it was largely
positive, and a new timed count-down
crossing should be completed by the end of
March, along with other works at the junction.
A23 campaigner Jonathan Bartley said,
“Too many lives have been ruined at this
dangerous junction. Thanks to everyone who
has signed petitions and forced decision-
makers to take road danger seriously in
Streatham."
The latest collision statistics for Streatham
Hill and Streatham High Road tell a
depressing tale. In 2016 there were 113
collisions on the A23 between its junction
with the South Circular and the border with
Croydon, including 10 resulting in life-
changing injuries. Thankfully there were no
fatalities.
The underlying trend is for increasing danger
- with 489 collisions in the five years 2012-
2016 up from 474 in 2011-2015 and an
increase in serious injuries from 41 to 45.
Seven people were killed on the A23 through
Streatham in 2012-2016.
"The High Road continues to be a deadly
blight on our community," said Jonathan. "We
can't stop now in campaigning for changes
to make the road safer and more pleasant for
those who live and work close by it.”

HORSES, OMNIBUSES, TRAMS, AND TROLLEY BUSES
by David Wright
Public transport is one of our biggest
concerns in Streatham, as the sorry situation
during the current works on the High Rd
emphasizes. Things used to be different.
200 years ago, people tended to live within
walking distance of work, but with the
industrial revolution came the need to travel.
In 1829, omnibuses carrying 22 passengers,
pulled by three horses, were introduced, then
double-deckers were built in the 1840s.
The load on horses was eased by the
development of steel rails in the road to
reduce friction in 1861. Hills still presented
a problem for trams, and cable haulage on
Brixton Hill was the answer. The London
Tramway Company opened a tram line from
Kennington and up Brixton Hill to Streatham
in 1891 and the horse-drawn track used
“grippers” to haul old horse drawn tramcars.
The cable consisted of strands of steel
wire wound round a rope, about an inch in
diameter. It was nearly six miles long (twice
the length of the route), and ran underground
between the tram lines. Another 0.75-mile
line was constructed from Streatham Hill
to Streatham Village and the Tate Library in
1896.
A tramcar going from Streatham to
Westminster would have the gripper car
detached at Kennington and replaced with
two horses, passengers remaining in their
seats. A tram depot was built opposite
Telford Avenue to house the steam powered
winding gear.
The trams were electrified from 1904 but
were phased out in the early 1930’s in favour
of diesel buses and trolleybuses. There were
proposals to convert the South London tram
routes to trolleybus operation. but War put
these on hold and afterwards it was decided
to replace the trams with motor buses. The
last tram in Streatham ran on 5th April 1951.
A new bus garage was built in 1951 on the
site of the old tram depot at Telford Avenue.
Thames Water has drilled through the old
cobbles and tram lines as they dug over 4m
down to the leaking sewer beneath.

Valentines Gourmet
by reheMa FigUeireDo
To eat
If music be the food of love, but you are
peckish for more than notes, Streatham Hill
is the place to play on. Long-term high street
favourite Perfect Blend offers a three-course
set menu for Valentine’s Day at the bargain
price of £15 a head.
My guest and I opted for deep fried halloumi
with garlic dip and fishcakes with sweet chilli
sauce to begin– with the latter the winner of
the two; crispy on the outside, moist on the
inside and full of warm complex flavours. I
followed with salmon steak accompanied by
dark lentils, tomatoes, chorizo, asparagus
and a rocket and watercress salad. While the
lentils were unusual, having been prepared
almost like a daal, the pairing worked well.
Our other main was the Jamaican Me
Crazy burger served with French fries and
a strategically placed gherkin. The beef
burger patty was cooked to perfection –
medium rare as ordered - with tomatoes and
pineapple slaw, and covered in a sweet spicy
Jerk sauce.
You need to bring a large appetite to Perfect
Blend, as portion sizes are very generous.
By dessert my dining partner and I opted to
share a white chocolate cookie, warm from
the oven, served in greaseproof paper. We
accompanied our dessert with rum and raisin
ice cream, which went down very smoothly,
possibly owing to the very strong alcohol
content. As an aside, not only was the food
excellent but a huge amount of thought had
gone into the presentation of the Valentine’s
menu, which comes in a stamped addressed
envelope, complete with corny quote and
cutlery in a brown paper sleeve displaying a
Ginuary Rota.
Do as the menu instructs – keep it local this
Valentine’s Day.

To drink
Nestled between a hairdresser and an off-
licence is one of Streatham’s hidden gems
– Hood. The restaurant is offering several
special dishes on the 14th but I was there to
sample the pink drinks available on the night.
If you’re looking to impress your date – opt
for the 2014 Davenport Limney sparkling rosé
– £8 a glass or £42 a bottle. Also on offer is
2016 Gascony rosé, Le Petit Gascoun, a fresh
and fruity wine priced at £4.60 a glass, £9.30
for a carafe, or £18 for a bottle. But the star
of the show had to be the pink gin and tonic
(£5.50 for a single or £8.50 for a double).
Though pink gin is the drink of the moment,
Hood offers instead a pink grapefruit tonic
water with Brighton gin – a smart move as
the zing of the tonic infuses the whole drink,
rather than being confined to the shot or
two of alcohol. The G&T is also beautifully
presented, in a Hood branded glass with a
slice of fresh grapefruit. It almost looks too
pretty to drink but trust me, it’s not.

H.L.F. Grant for
Rookery Cascade
The Rookery gardens at the
top of Streatham Common
will receive £84,600 from the Heritage Lottery
Fund to restore the Cascade water feature and
rockery gardens to their former glory. The local
community will be central in designing, planting
and celebrating the garden. The Rookery is
one of 14 outstanding open spaces in Lambeth
recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme.
The Cascade and rockery were installed in
around 1912 but the Cascade stopped working
a few years ago. Originally, it flowed down
to Streatham Wells in the Rookery and was
surrounded by fashionable Edwardian informal
planting mixed with fashionable exotics.
“Streatham has a long association with water,
having been established in the Edwardian times
as a spa town, commented Shea Richardson of
the Streatham Society, “the Cascade represents
an important link with our past, while providing
pleasure to visitors now and in the future.”
Streatham Wells opened after natural springs
were discovered in 1659. Water from the
springs had a sulphurous smell, and was sold
at sixpence a gallon. It was thought to cure
many diseases. The Rookery Garden was
gifted to London County Council (LCC) after a
fundraising effort led by local resident Stenton
Covington in 1912.
The restoration project will improve public
access to the site by refurbishing crazy paving
and replacing damaged protective fencing.
Volunteers, community groups, and schools
will be involved and there will be an outreach
programme including tours and events to
spread knowledge and appreciation of the
Rookery's heritage. The grant will also fund the
redevelopment of an old shed into an education
centre.
The total project will cost £148,132, of which
£84,600 will come from the Heritage Lottery
Fund. The lead project partners are SCCoop
and Lambeth Council, who will contribute
additional funding towards the total project
cost of £148,132. Other partners are Friends
of Streatham Common, Streatham Common
Community Garden and Streatham Society.
Volunteer Barbara Wright, who coordinated the
bid, said, “This is a tremendous boost to this
very special local heritage garden”, and Maggie
Charnley, vice-Chair of Streatham Common
Cooperative (SCCoop) said, “The Rookery is a
sanctuary for people and wildlife in the heart of
South London.”
Streatham Common Cooperative is leading
the project in partnership with other local
organisations with work ongoing finishing with
celebratory community events in summer 2019.

Bishop Thomas Grant School’s Great War Project
To commemorate the Centenary of World
War One, students at Bishop Thomas Grant
school have been researching fallen soldiers
from Streatham and the role they played
in The Great War as part of the school's
legacy 110 project and its commitment to
developing students’ understanding of local
history.
Students have been working in collaboration
with Professor Richard Grayson of
Goldsmiths, University of London for three
years. Their research includes using battalion
war diaries and other sources to find out
how these local men died. They have found
it an incredibly rewarding and eye-opening
experience to work with an academic
historian and primary archive sources to
develop a deeper understanding of the
contribution made by local men.
As part of Heart Streatham’s coverage of
the Centenary, every month an extract from
the students’ work will be published; full
accounts are on the Bishop Thomas Grant
website.
The History Department at B.T.G. would like
to thank Professor Grayson for his work with
our students and establishing this important
link between a local higher education provider
and the school.

Rifleman William Stirling Claridge, 1st/5th
London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade)
Killed in action, 13th May 1915
William Stirling Claridge, son of Mrs A.
C. Claridge, lived at 72 Riggindale Road,
Streatham. He was a member of the London
Rifle Brigade, the 1/5th Battalion of the
London Regiment. There were many events
reported in the battalion War Diary on the day
he was killed. As early as 4:00am, 'heavy
shelling started', which then 'continued
incessantly for over 12 hours'. Then,
interestingly, at 5:00am eighteen ‘hussars’
(soldiers in a cavalry regiment) ‘commenced
retiring from their trench’ but were ‘prevailed
upon to return’, suggesting the soldiers
may have attempted to escape but were
prevented, although it is not clear by whom.
This shows the difficulty of escape from the
trenches for the fighting soldiers. At noon,
the ‘enemy massed were heavily fired on’
by the Brigade’s ‘rifles and machine guns’
which was not followed by an ‘attack’ and at
6:30pm there were ‘orders for relief’, although
it is not stated whether this support arrived
or not. On the night he was killed, Rifleman
Claridge’s battalion’s War Diary shows that
his unit ‘moved to [the] divisional support line
immediately across St Jean-
Wieltje Road opposite [their] reserve trench’
at Wieltje, east of Ypres. The assumption that
this event resulted in his death is based on
the information that the ‘casualties were very
severe’ with ‘2 officers, 33 men killed’ and ‘4
officers and 49 men wounded’.

Streatham Hill
Theatre “at Risk”
The Streatham Hill Theatre was added to the
Theatres Trust ‘Theatres at Risk Register’
2018 last month, as reported on ITV London
News (23 Jan) with a film of the theatre and an
interview with David Harvey of the Friends of
Streatham Hill Theatre, which he founded as a
focus for local people interested in returning the
building to an arts and performance use.
The Association of British Theatre Technicians
Historical Research Committee has carried
out extensive research into the Grade II listed
theatre’s history and current state. It is still in
good condition, but fast action is needed to
return it to use before it deteriorates further.
The 1929 theatre is described by the Theatres
Trust as “one of London’s most lavish ‘sleeping
beauties’,” and was the last theatre designed
by W G R Sprague, the architect responsible for
some of the most beautiful theatres in London.
The original wooden stage machinery is also
still in place.
Why is the theatre at risk?
Beacon Bingo now runs a ‘Cashino’ slot-
machine lounge runs out of the rear of the
stalls, and the future of the building is uncertain.
Potentially, there are costly dilapidations to
be paid at the end of the remaining 10 years
of its lease. It is feared the current owner may
have plans for redevelopment, and if parts of
the building are let or developed separately –
maybe for offices or flats – the auditorium may
be left in an unsustainable position without
income from the rest of the building.
Beacon Bingo would like to find a cultural use
for the building and has been approached by
several potential users and developers.
The Theatres Trust thinks the theatre could be
adapted for smaller-scale performances and
would function well as an arts centre and home
for community organisations supported by bars
or cafes open to the public.
Theatres at Risk Launch

The Streatham St. Valentine’s Day Guide for Men
Gentlemen, we don’t normally single you
out for special treatment, but Valentine’s
Day is something the ladies already know
all about. Valentine’s Day; the one day your
performance, so to speak, will be under the
microscope.
Guys, we are here to help; you can do it all
inside the four Streatham wards.
Here’s what you need to know.
Firstly, breakfast is on you. Seriously. If
you can’t whip up avocado with eggs and
bacon, sneak out early to Brickwood Cafe
or Blackbird Bakery & grab some croissants
and other tasty bits to serve to your beloved
in bed. So far, so good? On no account
should you serve this without accompanying
flowers – a dozen red roses can be picked
up in M&S for £22 on the way back.
Now the next bit takes James Bond type
mission coordination – around 10:30 or
11am, drop significant other off at Emma
Wilson Urban Spa, Streatham Hill or Funky
www.heartstreatham.co.uk 21
Medusa Urban Spa, Greyhound Lane, for
some serious pampering. Both offer a range
of massages, facials, body scrubs and wraps,
and other treatments. Emma Wilson uses
VOYA and Elemis products and Donna at
Funky Medusa makes her own scrubs, oils,
facial wraps and body butters to a secret
formula.
Meanwhile, you need to move on to the
High Rd where Westbury Chemists have a
huge range of perfumes (including Chanel) at
amazing prices. Go to the wonderful Indigo
Tree with its own range of luxury organic
scented candles and body creams, and gifts
including the best selection of silver jewellery
around. Or head to The Village Card Shop
just across the bridge in Streatham Vale. It’s
one of the oldest gift shops in south London.
Once this bit of the mission is complete, nip
to Jasmin Studio Crafts in Greyhound Lane
where you will already have booked a session
with Jasmin to create your own beautiful
unique jewellery to present to your beloved.
It’s off to Hood in Streatham Hill for a
lazy lunch followed by a look round My
Vintage J Box on Sternhold Avenue with a
serendipitous find purchased on the spot
if you’re lucky. There’s plenty of time for a
drink or two at The Railway, where to utter
surprise, you present the Valentines gift – the
jewellery you personally made earlier! It may
take time for its uniqueness to sink in, but
over the years it will achieve family heirloom
status.
Now it will be late afternoon so enough time
to go home and freshen up, as your table
awaits at Trio Pizzeria for cocktails and live
Valentines music. Or for a superb evening’s
entertainment, head to Hideaway for dinner
and romance -Soul man Wayne Hernandez
will get you dancing cheek-to-cheek!
Romance is not dead, good sirs, it’s all
around us on our doorsteps. A car is
unnecessary; the James Bond tux is optional.
Make your beloved feel special by showing
them you’re a man with a plan.

Celebrities reveal their secrets
to younger looking skin
by Dr NilU
Looks and appearance matter if you’re a
celebrity. A bad paparazzi picture can have
serious consequences, which is why so many
celebrities place so much importance on
their appearance, particularly their skin. To
understand what the best treatments are for
maintaining younger looking healthy skin it’s
worth considering what professionals do.
It’s hard to believe Halle Berry will be 50 this
year. She's announced in the past that she’s
a big fan of the Kinara Skin Care Clinic in
LA which specialises in a range of skin care
products as well as treatments. She uses their
cleansers and moisturisers in the morning
and the evening and never leaves the house
without an organic sunscreen. She also tries to
go without make up whenever she can to give
her skin a rest.
At 46 Cate Blanchett’s looks and skin are an
inspiration. The Australian actress swears by
the SK-II range of skin products that includes
the signature ingredient PiteraTM. Apparently
the SK-II scientists discovered PiteraTM when
they noticed the hands of aged sake brewers
in Japan looked much younger than their
owner’s faces. Whatever the truth behind this
story SK-II is a quality skin therapy system
and certainly works for Cate.
Chemical peels appear to be Jennifer
Aniston’s secret to youthful looking skin. She
revealed on the Conan O’Brien’s talk show
that after a deep skin peel “You look like a
battered burn victim for a week”. It’s hardly
a glowing indictment for the treatment but
results are clear to see as at 47 she looks
amazing
Reese Witherspoon puts the beauty of her
skin down to her diet and exercise regimes.
You are what you eat and your skin is a
fantastic indication of your internal health. She
has, however, told Style magazine that she’s
a fan of Chanel’s Hydramax Active Moisture
Cream.
A good night’s sleep is all it takes according
to Sienna Miller. That and a little Amorepacific
ABC Serum. The serum is designed to
manage your essential skin functions,
rebalancing the skin’s natural rhythm. It
certainly seems to work for Sienna as her skin
does indeed appear to be perfectly balanced.
So some of the world’s most beautiful women
tell us they care for their skin. The products
may vary, but the same themes remain: Eat
well, Exercise, Get a good night’s sleep,
Moisturise, Cleanse, Use a good quality
sunblock.

Streatham Ice Hockey Report
DaviD Carr
Streatham RedHawks head into February
looking to break the top four in the league and
build momentum before the end of season
Play-Offs. The team are in good form despite
exiting the National Cup against Telford Tigers
at the Quarter Final stage last month.
The upcoming home fixtures see the
Peterborough Phantoms, Invicta Dynamos
and Cardiff Fire head to South London with the
RedHawks looking to win all three games.
Recently, crowd levels have risen to their
highest numbers of the season as ice hockey
fans in South London have thrown their support
behind the Streatham RedHawks. The team
respond to this, as a fantastic 4-3 overtime
win over Milton Keynes Thunder in front of an
almost-full house of a thousand people testifies.
Canadian Coach Jeremy Cornish is impressed
with how things have been going:
“One thing I really like about our team is that
they don’t give up and play the game the right
way. The work
rate is there, and
when we need to
be tough we are.
The crowds at
home and on the
road really make a
difference to the team and when they skate out
to see the seats all full in the arena it gives us
all a buzz”
Streatham will play the rest of the season
without Captain Adam Wood who suffered a
knee injury in the game against Milton Keynes,
and top-scorer Michael Farn will take over as
Alternate Captain in his absence.

Streatham Police Update
by: iNSPeCtor tereSa hUbbarD
PC Sasha Eady of the St Leonards SNT, was
invited to the Streatham WI where she spoke
about crime prevention. Later she took part
in an Operation Be Safe campaign at a local
business premises. 35 smart water kits were
handed out to residents and crime prevention
advice given.
Officers from Streatham have been meeting
the public at Lloyds Bank, Streatham Station
and Mes Amis Cafe, and giving out free Met
Trace Kits. Due to the recent closures of the
Front Office Counter in Streatham, all wards
will be hosting a 'drop in' or coffee morning
on a regular basis called "Cuppa with a
Copper" at a local venue. Officers will give
advice and residents can report crime if
necessary. Dates, times and venues will be
advertised on social media, the Met Police
website and we will try to add these to the
Heart Streatham website as well.
On Monday, December 4, at approximately
01:40, police were called to a report of
shots being fired in Hopton Road. Firearms
specialists conducted a search, but no
bullets were found. Enquiries suggested two
cars were driving in the area at speed, with
the passenger from one vehicle firing at the
second car. Investigations are ongoing.
Knights Hill have taken part in a joint
operation with the Council at Crown Lane
Primary School highlighting irresponsible
parking after some near misses!
I know many people were worried about
disorder on Streatham High Road in
December. There was a fight between about
30 young people who had left a party. 2 boys
aged 13 and 14 were arrested after both
were found to be in possession of knives. A
14-year-old girl was also arrested for assault.
The disorder was contained with help from
British Transport Police.
In January officers from Streatham chased
four suspects who may have robbed young
victims of mobile phones by implying they
were armed with a weapon. Helped by a
member of the public, officers detained and
arrested 4 youths. A stolen phone was found
on one of the suspects, and a meat cleaver
was found in a bag belonging to another. I am
highlighting these pictures because we need
assistance from the community in tackling
knife crime.
You are the eyes
and the ears of
the Police and we
always need your
help.

We’d love to know which size you prefer for the future. Our cover picture of the old Rookery Cafe is by the talented artist, Daniel McFall, who paints iconic London scenes in his unique style. See and buy his work at www.southlondonartistdan. co.uk or on Facebook – we hope to be featuring more in future issues because Dan has painted several Streatham pictures. STOP PRESS Shrubbery Road has been designated one way (downhill off the High Rd) during emergency sewer works on the High Rd. KissFM plans to hold KISSTORY ON THE COMMON on Streatham Common on 21 July. Respond to the licence request via lambeth.gov.uk/forms/comment or by email to licencing@lambeth.gov.uk re We Are the Fair Ltd. Before 19th February.
  • 4. www.heartstreatham.co.uk4 Before Christmas we stocked up on free range game and produce from the Railway Inn farmers market, along with handmade breads, artisanal crafts and Kerry Wren’s cakes, all during the London Beer Festival. If you missed the Christmas Ice Dancing Show, “Saturday Night at the Movies”, you missed a treat. The Streatham ice dancers celebrated winning 3 gold medals at the 2017 British Ice Skating Championships. Pratts and Payne hosted a Christmas lunch for older folk where Streatham Choral led the carol singing just before their sell-out Christmas Carol Concert. Streatham Common Co-op’s Rookery Christmas Fair was a great success, and we snuck a peek at the progress Inkspot Brewery are making converting the old Rookery barn into a brewery - congrats to them on opening a 2nd Art & Craft in the Dip. Around 70 turned up to the Community Orchard Wassail on a freezing January afternoon to bless the trees in the Rookery Orchard with Streatham scrumpy, traditional songs and dancing. Streatham Action’s AGM in January elected a new Chair - Alex Vine will be supported by Neil Salt as Vice chair and Al Hamilton as treasurer. Aldi at Streatham Station was opened by former Team GB hockey player, Helen Richardson-Walsh, who cut the ribbon alongside pupils from St Andrews Catholic Primary School, where she gave an assembly afterwards. The national awards are the most prestigious and established in the country for the beauty, spa, nails and aesthetics markets and seek to recognise those who go above and beyond as a beauty business and make a significant difference to the industry. Even reaching the finals in the awards marks out a business as one the country’s most impressive salons, while a win can establish them on a global scale as a truly exceptional beauty business. The Boutique Beauty Salon of the Year category seeks to celebrate those small salons that think big, with exciting ideas and polished services that allow them to compete on a grand scale. The shortlist for spa and salon categories is made up of the winners and particularly high- scoring finalists of the Professional Beauty Regional Awards in October. • 8. www.heartstreatham.co.uk8 Soapbox Streatham High Road Hell We are used to awful congestion on Streatham High Rd, but the A23 has been hellish at rush hours due to Thames Water’s emergency sewer repairs at the top of Prentis Rd. South-bound traffic (at first including lorries, coaches and emergency vehicles) is currently diverted down narrow residential Shrubbery Rd and back up Stanthorpe Rd, resulting in hundreds of idling vehicles, toxic fumes and outbursts of road rage outside schools and homes in the area including Sunnyhill and Wellfield Rd. Chaos reigns with southbound buses diverted via Leigham Court Rd and Streatham Common North. There's another diversion for HGVs via Tulse Hill, and one for cyclists, some of whom have added to the aggro by being a danger to pedestrians by riding on pavements to avoid it. Frustratingly, Thames Water, TfL and the Council have declined our requests to publicise the diversions in this magazine to explain what's going on, why, and how long it’s likely to take – our latest info is until 9th February as we go to press. This disruption may have provided a useful “dry run” for the issues envisaged when the long-anticipated St Leonard’s Junction improvement works commence, according to Neil Salt, chair of the local community group, Streatham Action Transport. “The downside of the current sewage repair work, which will take weeks to repair, not least because of the 5-metre depth of drilling required, is that there is every likelihood that the St Leonard’s Junction improvement works may now get delayed beyond the early February start date originally set by TfL”, commented Neil. Work on this lethal junction has been part of a long campaign for greater safety on the A23. The results of a public consultation carried out before Christmas have yet to be published, but a source at TfL has told the Safer A23 Campaign that it was largely positive, and a new timed count-down crossing should be completed by the end of March, along with other works at the junction. A23 campaigner Jonathan Bartley said, “Too many lives have been ruined at this dangerous junction. Thanks to everyone who has signed petitions and forced decision- makers to take road danger seriously in Streatham." The latest collision statistics for Streatham Hill and Streatham High Road tell a depressing tale. In 2016 there were 113 collisions on the A23 between its junction with the South Circular and the border with Croydon, including 10 resulting in life- changing injuries. Thankfully there were no fatalities. The underlying trend is for increasing danger - with 489 collisions in the five years 2012- 2016 up from 474 in 2011-2015 and an increase in serious injuries from 41 to 45. Seven people were killed on the A23 through Streatham in 2012-2016. "The High Road continues to be a deadly blight on our community," said Jonathan. "We can't stop now in campaigning for changes to make the road safer and more pleasant for those who live and work close by it.” Streatham High Rd Closed Southbound Shrubbery Rd. Jam

  • 10. www.heartstreatham.co.uk10 HORSES, OMNIBUSES, TRAMS, AND TROLLEY BUSES by David Wright Public transport is one of our biggest concerns in Streatham, as the sorry situation during the current works on the High Rd emphasizes. Things used to be different. 200 years ago, people tended to live within walking distance of work, but with the industrial revolution came the need to travel. In 1829, omnibuses carrying 22 passengers, pulled by three horses, were introduced, then double-deckers were built in the 1840s. The load on horses was eased by the development of steel rails in the road to reduce friction in 1861. Hills still presented a problem for trams, and cable haulage on Brixton Hill was the answer. The London Tramway Company opened a tram line from Kennington and up Brixton Hill to Streatham in 1891 and the horse-drawn track used “grippers” to haul old horse drawn tramcars. The cable consisted of strands of steel wire wound round a rope, about an inch in diameter. It was nearly six miles long (twice the length of the route), and ran underground between the tram lines. Another 0.75-mile line was constructed from Streatham Hill to Streatham Village and the Tate Library in 1896. A tramcar going from Streatham to Westminster would have the gripper car detached at Kennington and replaced with two horses, passengers remaining in their seats. A tram depot was built opposite Telford Avenue to house the steam powered winding gear. The trams were electrified from 1904 but were phased out in the early 1930’s in favour of diesel buses and trolleybuses. There were proposals to convert the South London tram routes to trolleybus operation. but War put these on hold and afterwards it was decided to replace the trams with motor buses. The last tram in Streatham ran on 5th April 1951. A new bus garage was built in 1951 on the site of the old tram depot at Telford Avenue. Thames Water has drilled through the old cobbles and tram lines as they dug over 4m down to the leaking sewer beneath.

Long-term high street favourite Perfect Blend offers a three-course set menu for Valentine’s Day at the bargain price of £15 a head. My guest and I opted for deep fried halloumi with garlic dip and fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce to begin– with the latter the winner of the two; crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and full of warm complex flavours. I followed with salmon steak accompanied by dark lentils, tomatoes, chorizo, asparagus and a rocket and watercress salad. While the lentils were unusual, having been prepared almost like a daal, the pairing worked well. Our other main was the Jamaican Me Crazy burger served with French fries and a strategically placed gherkin. The beef burger patty was cooked to perfection – medium rare as ordered - with tomatoes and pineapple slaw, and covered in a sweet spicy Jerk sauce. You need to bring a large appetite to Perfect Blend, as portion sizes are very generous. By dessert my dining partner and I opted to share a white chocolate cookie, warm from the oven, served in greaseproof paper. We accompanied our dessert with rum and raisin ice cream, which went down very smoothly, possibly owing to the very strong alcohol content. As an aside, not only was the food excellent but a huge amount of thought had gone into the presentation of the Valentine’s menu, which comes in a stamped addressed envelope, complete with corny quote and cutlery in a brown paper sleeve displaying a Ginuary Rota. Do as the menu instructs – keep it local this Valentine’s Day. Perfect Blend, 8-9 Streatleigh Parade, SW161EQ 0208 7694646 To drink Nestled between a hairdresser and an off- licence is one of Streatham’s hidden gems – Hood. The restaurant is offering several special dishes on the 14th but I was there to sample the pink drinks available on the night. If you’re looking to impress your date – opt for the 2014 Davenport Limney sparkling rosé – £8 a glass or £42 a bottle. Also on offer is 2016 Gascony rosé, Le Petit Gascoun, a fresh and fruity wine priced at £4.60 a glass, £9.30 for a carafe, or £18 for a bottle. But the star of the show had to be the pink gin and tonic (£5.50 for a single or £8.50 for a double). Though pink gin is the drink of the moment, Hood offers instead a pink grapefruit tonic water with Brighton gin – a smart move as the zing of the tonic infuses the whole drink, rather than being confined to the shot or two of alcohol. The G&T is also beautifully presented, in a Hood branded glass with a slice of fresh grapefruit. It almost looks too pretty to drink but trust me, it’s not. Grant for Rookery Cascade The Rookery gardens at the top of Streatham Common will receive £84,600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore the Cascade water feature and rockery gardens to their former glory. The local community will be central in designing, planting and celebrating the garden. The Rookery is one of 14 outstanding open spaces in Lambeth recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme. The Cascade and rockery were installed in around 1912 but the Cascade stopped working a few years ago. Originally, it flowed down to Streatham Wells in the Rookery and was surrounded by fashionable Edwardian informal planting mixed with fashionable exotics. “Streatham has a long association with water, having been established in the Edwardian times as a spa town, commented Shea Richardson of the Streatham Society, “the Cascade represents an important link with our past, while providing pleasure to visitors now and in the future.” Streatham Wells opened after natural springs were discovered in 1659. Water from the springs had a sulphurous smell, and was sold at sixpence a gallon. It was thought to cure many diseases. The Rookery Garden was gifted to London County Council (LCC) after a fundraising effort led by local resident Stenton Covington in 1912. The restoration project will improve public access to the site by refurbishing crazy paving and replacing damaged protective fencing. Volunteers, community groups, and schools will be involved and there will be an outreach programme including tours and events to spread knowledge and appreciation of the Rookery's heritage. The grant will also fund the redevelopment of an old shed into an education centre. The total project will cost £148,132, of which £84,600 will come from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The lead project partners are SCCoop and Lambeth Council, who will contribute additional funding towards the total project cost of £148,132. Other partners are Friends of Streatham Common, Streatham Common Community Garden and Streatham Society. Volunteer Barbara Wright, who coordinated the bid, said, “This is a tremendous boost to this very special local heritage garden”, and Maggie Charnley, vice-Chair of Streatham Common Cooperative (SCCoop) said, “The Rookery is a sanctuary for people and wildlife in the heart of South London.” Streatham Common Cooperative is leading the project in partnership with other local organisations with work ongoing finishing with celebratory community events in summer 2019. • 16. www.heartstreatham.co.uk16 Bishop Thomas Grant School’s Great War Project To commemorate the Centenary of World War One, students at Bishop Thomas Grant school have been researching fallen soldiers from Streatham and the role they played in The Great War as part of the school's legacy 110 project and its commitment to developing students’ understanding of local history. Students have been working in collaboration with Professor Richard Grayson of Goldsmiths, University of London for three years. Their research includes using battalion war diaries and other sources to find out how these local men died. They have found it an incredibly rewarding and eye-opening experience to work with an academic historian and primary archive sources to develop a deeper understanding of the contribution made by local men. As part of Heart Streatham’s coverage of the Centenary, every month an extract from the students’ work will be published; full accounts are on the Bishop Thomas Grant website. The History Department at B.T.G. would like to thank Professor Grayson for his work with our students and establishing this important link between a local higher education provider and the school. Steph Tice, History Department, Bishop Thomas Grant School Rifleman William Stirling Claridge, 1st/5th London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) Killed in action, 13th May 1915 William Stirling Claridge, son of Mrs A. C. Claridge, lived at 72 Riggindale Road, Streatham. He was a member of the London Rifle Brigade, the 1/5th Battalion of the London Regiment. There were many events reported in the battalion War Diary on the day he was killed. As early as 4:00am, 'heavy shelling started', which then 'continued incessantly for over 12 hours'. Then, interestingly, at 5:00am eighteen ‘hussars’ (soldiers in a cavalry regiment) ‘commenced retiring from their trench’ but were ‘prevailed upon to return’, suggesting the soldiers may have attempted to escape but were prevented, although it is not clear by whom. This shows the difficulty of escape from the trenches for the fighting soldiers. At noon, the ‘enemy massed were heavily fired on’ by the Brigade’s ‘rifles and machine guns’ which was not followed by an ‘attack’ and at 6:30pm there were ‘orders for relief’, although it is not stated whether this support arrived or not. On the night he was killed, Rifleman Claridge’s battalion’s War Diary shows that his unit ‘moved to [the] divisional support line immediately across St Jean- Wieltje Road opposite [their] reserve trench’ at Wieltje, east of Ypres. The assumption that this event resulted in his death is based on the information that the ‘casualties were very severe’ with ‘2 officers, 33 men killed’ and ‘4 officers and 49 men wounded’. • 18. www.heartstreatham.co.uk18 Streatham Hill Theatre “at Risk” The Streatham Hill Theatre was added to the Theatres Trust ‘Theatres at Risk Register’ 2018 last month, as reported on ITV London News (23 Jan) with a film of the theatre and an interview with David Harvey of the Friends of Streatham Hill Theatre, which he founded as a focus for local people interested in returning the building to an arts and performance use. The Association of British Theatre Technicians Historical Research Committee has carried out extensive research into the Grade II listed theatre’s history and current state. It is still in good condition, but fast action is needed to return it to use before it deteriorates further. The 1929 theatre is described by the Theatres Trust as “one of London’s most lavish ‘sleeping beauties’,” and was the last theatre designed by W G R Sprague, the architect responsible for some of the most beautiful theatres in London. The original wooden stage machinery is also still in place. Why is the theatre at risk? Beacon Bingo now runs a ‘Cashino’ slot- machine lounge runs out of the rear of the stalls, and the future of the building is uncertain. Potentially, there are costly dilapidations to be paid at the end of the remaining 10 years of its lease. It is feared the current owner may have plans for redevelopment, and if parts of the building are let or developed separately – maybe for offices or flats – the auditorium may be left in an unsustainable position without income from the rest of the building. Beacon Bingo would like to find a cultural use for the building and has been approached by several potential users and developers. The Theatres Trust thinks the theatre could be adapted for smaller-scale performances and would function well as an arts centre and home for community organisations supported by bars or cafes open to the public. A bad paparazzi picture can have serious consequences, which is why so many celebrities place so much importance on their appearance, particularly their skin. To understand what the best treatments are for maintaining younger looking healthy skin it’s worth considering what professionals do. It’s hard to believe Halle Berry will be 50 this year. She's announced in the past that she’s a big fan of the Kinara Skin Care Clinic in LA which specialises in a range of skin care products as well as treatments. She uses their cleansers and moisturisers in the morning and the evening and never leaves the house without an organic sunscreen. She also tries to go without make up whenever she can to give her skin a rest. At 46 Cate Blanchett’s looks and skin are an inspiration. The Australian actress swears by the SK-II range of skin products that includes the signature ingredient PiteraTM. Apparently the SK-II scientists discovered PiteraTM when they noticed the hands of aged sake brewers in Japan looked much younger than their owner’s faces. Whatever the truth behind this story SK-II is a quality skin therapy system and certainly works for Cate. Chemical peels appear to be Jennifer Aniston’s secret to youthful looking skin. She revealed on the Conan O’Brien’s talk show that after a deep skin peel “You look like a battered burn victim for a week”. It’s hardly a glowing indictment for the treatment but results are clear to see as at 47 she looks amazing Reese Witherspoon puts the beauty of her skin down to her diet and exercise regimes. You are what you eat and your skin is a fantastic indication of your internal health. She has, however, told Style magazine that she’s a fan of Chanel’s Hydramax Active Moisture Cream. • 34. www.heartstreatham.co.uk34 Streatham Police Update by: iNSPeCtor tereSa hUbbarD PC Sasha Eady of the St Leonards SNT, was invited to the Streatham WI where she spoke about crime prevention. Later she took part in an Operation Be Safe campaign at a local business premises. 35 smart water kits were handed out to residents and crime prevention advice given. Officers from Streatham have been meeting the public at Lloyds Bank, Streatham Station and Mes Amis Cafe, and giving out free Met Trace Kits. Due to the recent closures of the Front Office Counter in Streatham, all wards will be hosting a 'drop in' or coffee morning on a regular basis called "Cuppa with a Copper" at a local venue. Officers will give advice and residents can report crime if necessary. Dates, times and venues will be advertised on social media, the Met Police website and we will try to add these to the Heart Streatham website as well. On Monday, December 4, at approximately 01:40, police were called to a report of shots being fired in Hopton Road. Firearms specialists conducted a search, but no bullets were found. Enquiries suggested two cars were driving in the area at speed, with the passenger from one vehicle firing at the second car. Investigations are ongoing. Knights Hill have taken part in a joint operation with the Council at Crown Lane Primary School highlighting irresponsible parking after some near misses! I know many people were worried about disorder on Streatham High Road in December. There was a fight between about 30 young people who had left a party. 2 boys aged 13 and 14 were arrested after both were found to be in possession of knives. A 14-year-old girl was also arrested for assault. The disorder was contained with help from British Transport Police. In January officers from Streatham chased four suspects who may have robbed young victims of mobile phones by implying they were armed with a weapon. Helped by a member of the public, officers detained and arrested 4 youths. A stolen phone was found on one of the suspects, and a meat cleaver was found in a bag belonging to another. I am highlighting these pictures because we need assistance from the community in tackling knife crime. You are the eyes and the ears of the Police and we always need your help.
