Normally we feature a roundup of local
events and happenings since the last
magazine hit the letterbox. This month we
look to the future and to something that’s
being put together right now.
For many years Streatham Action, the
local area civic forum, has given voice to
residents and provided a space for local
groups to share ideas and be heard as the
umbrella organisation for local groups and
networks in Streatham.
In recent years its focus has been on big
issues such as transport and planning, and
organising hustings for elections. However,
this month they are launching a new initiative
- (Re)Discover Streatham - at Streatham
Library on the 30th September.
Streatham Action will bring as many local
organisations in the area that they can find
together under one roof so that we can all
pop along at any point in the afternoon and
find out what’s going on in Streatham.
If you have kids, like nature, music, are a
mum, are younger, older, young at heart,
want to make your neighbourhood a better,
safer place, want to help others or just want
to see what’s out there that’s interesting,
there will be something there for you from
the 40 or so groups present. The local Police
and Safer Neighbourhoods Teams will also
have their own table and will be able to
provide information at the event.
If you’re new to the area you can “discover”
Streatham for the first time, if you’ve been
here for donkey’s years, you can “re-
discover” Streatham.
We’re told that, all being well, it will be run
twice a year – once in the autumn for the
start of a new term, and once in the spring
when we’re all re-emerging from our winter
hibernation.
What’s more, that evening, there’s a chance
to return to the Library for an hour or so to
hear some very interesting local stories told
by local characters! It shouldn’t be missed.
We’ll be there. Come join us!

Great news – the Streatham Common
playground revamp has a green light.
Ground Control Ltd have been appointed as
contractors and works are due to start this
week and are scheduled to finish in mid-
December. The playground will be closed
during this period - an alternative playground
is in Streatham Vale Park.
Vegarden, the vegan café, at The Earl Ferrers
public house is now open Wednesday-Friday
10am-5pm and 8pm at the weekend for

Streatham RedHawks have new jersey
designs for the 2017/18 campaign. The
home and away jerseys have the traditional
colours of red, white and black and were
designed by Fusional.
Streatham Common will be benefitting from
a new Heritage Lottery funded project run
by London Wildlife Trust. The project aims
to revive the Great North Wood, which once
covered the high ground between Deptford
and Selhurst. It will protect, enhance and
celebrate remnant sites, allowing people to
explore the woodland heritage.

Hix and Buck, owners of the Wine Parlour in
Brixton have applied to Lambeth for a licence
for the premises of Boyce de Roca, Leigham
Hall Parade, planning a wine bar to be open
in the evenings and sell off-trade. This is
a collaboration between Boyce da Roca
and Hix and Bucks and the café will remain
open…we are very excited!
Those familiar with the Exhibit in Balham will
see the official opening of Exhibit B on 14th
September in the old Brighton Way premises
after a soft launch the week before to replace
Brighton Way, which struggled to find its way
in Streatham.
Taking their inspiration from the Australian
and New Zealand café scene Brickwood
Coffee and Bread are soon to open next to
Streatham Green with some outside tables
on Streatham Green. The Dip is set for
change as Chinese Chef has closed and the

premises are on the market.
Mrs Wong’s restaurant has changed
ownership, with the new owners who, we hear,
are friends of the old owners, retaining some of
the menu, great Chinese food and BYO booze.
Clip Theatre launches two youth theatres for
ages 5-7 and 7-11 this month.
We welcome The Vaper to Streatham, next
to Streatham Station, with a wide range of
vaping supplies and a very cool frontage!
Following a complete revamp by new local
owners, the Leigham Arms has been renamed
The Leigham Well – it looks fantastic and
promises to be a great neighbourhood pub.
Our favourite record store, Turnstyle, is
also closing at the end of September and
have a sale on. Waiting to hear on the new
premises. Meanwhile, follow their website
and watch out for Turnstyle Vinyl nights
around the area.
The refurbishment of Iceland on Streatham
High Road is now complete and the store has
reopened.
The confirmed retailers at the Megabowl
site in Streatham Hill are M&S, Superdrug,
Starbucks and Nisbets.
The Elephant Bakehouse shop and the
news and coffee bar in Streatham Station has
closed but alternatives are being looked at.
Streatham is being spoilt for gyms as The
Gym Group at the Streatham station site is
due to open at the end of October and the
Lahore Kebab house at the Norbury end
of the High Rd is the subject of a planning
application from Anytime Fitness 24-hour
gym.

EweMove Streatham are looking to help more landlords
find the perfect tenants.
Estreham Road, Streatham
We owe a tremendous amount to a man who laid the
foundation of the sports that dominate our summer
and winter calendars; former Streatham resident,
Charles William "C.W." Alcock (1842-1907), who
lived at 16 Stanthorpe Road SW16 and who laid the
foundations for both football and cricket as a player,
referee, administrator and journalist/editor/publisher –
he was “the father of modern Sport”.
CW was educated at Harrow, and in 1863 was
dominant in founding the Wanderers FC, and who
played home matches in Battersea Park. He was
instrumental in establishing the Football Association
in 1863, becoming Vice President from 1870-1895.
Charles’ brother, James, was part of an FA meeting
that ruled hand ball and hacking an opponent should
be outlawed, and in 1866 under the new FA rules,
Charles was the first English player to be ruled
offside!
Charles published the first Football Annual in 1868,
The Father of Modern Sport
11. www.heartstreatham.co.uk 11
then in 1871 proposed the establishment of
the FA Cup, first played at the Oval in 1872.
He captained the Wanderers FC to win it! He
also refereed the FA Cup finals of 1875 and
1879, and was one of those responsible for
the first ever International football match in
1870 against Scotland.
Charles was a very capable cricketer too,
captaining Middlesex in the first ever
County match in 1867 and playing variously
also for Essex and MCC. He was Secretary
of Surrey County Cricket Club from 1872
until his death in 1907.
Charles helped organise the first Test Match
in England against Australia at the Oval
in 1880 which England won with opening
batsmen WG and EM Grace. The next
match at the Oval in 1882, saw Australia
win and the birth of ‘The Ashes’. He
founded the ‘Cricket’ magazine in 1882
which survived through the game’s Golden
Age until 1914 and edited James Lilywhite’s
Cricketers’ Annual through the period 1872
until 1900, which was as prestigious as
Wisden is today.
Charles was also responsible for England’s
first rugby International against Scotland
at the Oval in 1872 and again against
Ireland in 1875 and in his spare time, was
Vice President of the Mid-Surrey Golf Club
and Chairman of the Richmond Athletic
Association.
A truly remarkable career!
Charles William Alcock married Eliza
Caroline Ovenden in Islington in 1864 and
they went on to have 8 children. He is buried
in West Norwood Cemetery and his grave
which was re-dedicated in 1999 has the FA
Cup trophy prominently carved in stone.
There is a second monument to him in
London at the Oval where there is a room in
the pavilion named after him.

of financial mismanagement and wastage
of millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money.
They allege overpayments to builders for
work on council estates, possible price fixing
on tenders, and “industrial scale” disregard
for the rules on competitive tendering.
Lambeth responded that their statement of
accounts for 2015-16 were fully signed off by
an” independent external auditor”. Council
elections are next May.
Quietways
We hear the Estreham Road section of the
London Quietway bicycle-friendly route
will remain with no northbound access
between Pathfield Road and Barrow Road
for that section of the London Quietway.
Consultations on the Conyers and Riggindale
Roads section in Lambeth, and the Tooting
Common section in Wandsworth, will begin
imminently. A St Leonard’s Councillor told us
the post-trial consultation with those living
in the area suggests overwhelming support
for the reduction in automobile traffic on
Estreham Road.
Greyhound Lane “Our Streets” Project
Over the summer, the Streatham Society
submitted a robust opposing view to
paving over Greyhound Place (corner of
Greyhound Lane and the High Road) because
the cobblestoned paving there is the last
surviving cobbled roadway in Streatham,
dating from the 1800s. They called on
Lambeth to re-lay the cobbles and preserve
Streatham’s heritage.
Hopton Rd “Illegal” No Right Turn
Over summer, Soapbox was contacted by
a Madeira Rd resident about the lack of
resident consultation and proper process
in TfL’s implementation of a no right turn
into and out of Hopton Rd opposite Tesco
Superstore. Somewhat tardily, TfL has
applied for the requisite traffic order over the
summer, as we learned when we spotted
their advertisement in the South London
Press dated 4 August inviting objections to
be made by 25 August, The SLP sells very
few copies in Streatham (fewer than 1000),
and we are pretty sure that most residents
were unaware of the opportunity to let
their views be known. Streatham Action
has requested that the period for response
be extended to mid-September and the
application given better publicity to allow
Streatham residents a reasonable chance to
express their views. Emails can be sent to TfL

Since 2013, local businesses have
collectedly invested money in
making Streatham a great place
to live, work and visit. The annual
levy they pay has funded policing,
public toilets, hanging baskets,
jet wash cleaning, chewing
gum removal, banners, free
business recycling, shopfront
improvements, marketing
campaigns, Christmas trees and
lights while also supporting and
representing businesses and
tackling issues that affect them.
In 2018, businesses will decide
whether to continue the great
work of inStreatham.This
will mean a further £1.25m
investment by the businesses
into the local community over
a second five-year term. Plans
include further investment into
festivals and events to celebrate
Streatham’s culture and heritage.
We will work hard to attract new
retailers to the High Rd, make
improvements to shop fronts, and
add more greenery.
It has been a productive and
successful five years.
But it’s now time to vote on a
second BID term and we need
your support!
Please encourage the local
businesses you use to Vote
YES for InStreatham Business
Improvement District and
help us to continue this positive
momentum for another five
years.
2017 has been a successful year for events. Over summer, we have
supported several large events including the Streatham Festival,
Streatham Food Festival and the Love Streatham Family Fun Day.
During the Streatham Food Festival in June, thousands of people
sampled the delights of our growing restaurant scene as a whopping 36
restaurants created special menus for the FoodTour at the end of June,
the most that have ever taken part!
In July, the 16th annual Streatham Festival took place with fantastic events
taking place in venues across Streatham -This was the biggest festival yet!
inStreatham were proud to support the week-long programme of music,
comedy, arts and theatre which was more popular than ever thanks to
local business support and its stellar team of volunteers.
Look out for the Free Film Festival and Little BIG Peace Event coming
this month!
Our latest project is the new seating and planting installed on Leigham
Court Road and outside Streatham Station, which has received great
feedback from the local community via ourTwitter feed, which now
reaches nearly 3,000 people. The work was funded by the London
Enterprise Panel's New Homes Bonus programme which is helping to
drive local economic growth by revitalising and diversifying London's
High Street.
We aim to brighten up Streatham with lighting that will soon be installed
in trees to the South of Streatham Common as part of our plan to
enhance the areas main gateways. The lights will operate on timers and
will brighten the entrance to Streatham, especially as the nights are
drawing in.

The New Guv'nor in Streatham
Streatham has a new Police Inspector, Teresa
Hubbard, who came to the Met via a skiing
holiday where she happened to meet a party of
constables on the slopes and decided to make
the jump to law enforcement. She fi rst served
in Sussex before moving to the Met in 2007 as
a response driver, then moved to Croydon to
specialise in burglary, gangs and knife crime.
Now posted to Streatham, Inspector Hubbard’s
teams will tackle anti-social behaviour,
speeding, and community- based policing as
priorities. She told us that Streatham tends
to be safe, and she intends to see that it
stays that way. She is very keen to engage
with the community, primarily through Safer
Neighbourhoods Panels to understand the
dynamics of each area, as priorities differ by
ward and by neighbourhoods within wards.
Some issues can’t be addressed by the
police alone so Inspector Hubbard attends a
twicemonthly liaison meeting with Lambeth
Council offi cers from
Community Safety, Housing
and other agencies, and
solutions are hammered
out as a partnership.
Information from ward panel
meetings is fed directly
into to the Council there,
which is another good reason to get involved in
your local ward panel (see contact info on our
website).
We discussed the elephant in the room
with her – what will happen to the relatively
new Streatham Police Base? Unfortunately,
Inspector Hubbard had no new information
for us because the public consultation runs
through the 6th of October (find the link on our
website). The issue is finance, and specifically
paying for underused stations. We must use the
Streatham Police Base or lose it!
