Hearing loss is a sudden or gradual decrease in how well you can hear. It is one of the most common conditions affecting older and elderly adults. Approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing.
Hearing is one of our primary modes of communication. 360 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss.
Hearing loss may result from genetic causes, complications at birth, certain infectious diseases, chronic ear infections, the use of particular drugs, exposure to excessive noise and ageing.
Hearing loss may be mild, moderate, severe or profound.
It can affect one ear or both ears, and leads to difficulty in hearing conversational speech or loud sounds. it may occur in one or both ear.

What Are The Subtle Signs Of Hearing Loss In AdultsSoundak
Subtle signs of hearing loss in adults include difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds, such as children's voices or beeping appliances. Tinnitus, a ringing in the ears, can emerge, and social withdrawal due to communication challenges may occur. Increasing the volume of TVs and audio systems is common. Early detection is vital for effective management.
Hearing health awareness in our communityEar solutions
Raising awareness about hearing health within our community is paramount to fostering a culture of proactive care and support. By educating individuals about the importance of regular screenings, noise protection, and early intervention, we can mitigate the impact of hearing loss and promote overall well-being. Through workshops, informational sessions, and accessible resources, we empower community members to prioritize their auditory health and seek assistance when needed. Furthermore, fostering understanding and empathy towards those with hearing impairments cultivates inclusivity and strengthens social bonds. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels valued and supported in their journey towards better hearing health.

Antibiotic Stewardship by Anushri Srivastava.pptxAnushriSrivastav
Stewardship is the act of taking good care of something.
Antimicrobial stewardship is a coordinated program that promotes the appropriate use of antimicrobials (including antibiotics), improves patient outcomes, reduces microbial resistance, and decreases the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.
WHO launched the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) in 2015 to fill knowledge gaps and inform strategies at all levels.
ACCORDING TO apic.org,
Antimicrobial stewardship is a coordinated program that promotes the appropriate use of antimicrobials (including antibiotics), improves patient outcomes, reduces microbial resistance, and decreases the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.
ACCORDING TO pewtrusts.org,
Antibiotic stewardship refers to efforts in doctors’ offices, hospitals, long term care facilities, and other health care settings to ensure that antibiotics are used only when necessary and appropriate
According to WHO,
Antimicrobial stewardship is a systematic approach to educate and support health care professionals to follow evidence-based guidelines for prescribing and administering antimicrobials
In 1996, John McGowan and Dale Gerding first applied the term antimicrobial stewardship, where they suggested a causal association between antimicrobial agent use and resistance. They also focused on the urgency of large-scale controlled trials of antimicrobial-use regulation employing sophisticated epidemiologic methods, molecular typing, and precise resistance mechanism analysis.
Antimicrobial Stewardship(AMS) refers to the optimal selection, dosing, and duration of antimicrobial treatment resulting in the best clinical outcome with minimal side effects to the patients and minimal impact on subsequent resistance.
According to the 2019 report, in the US, more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur each year, and more than 35000 people die. In addition to this, it also mentioned that 223,900 cases of Clostridoides difficile occurred in 2017, of which 12800 people died. The report did not include viruses or parasites

4. EPIDEMIOLOGY OF HEARING
LOSS
❖ Approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has
hearing loss, and nearly half of those older than 75 has difficulty hearing.
❖ Hearing loss is the third most prevalent condition in older adults.
❖ There are 164.5 million persons of above 65 years with disabling hearing
loss, i.e. 33% of the world’s population above 65 years. World Health
Organization (WHO).
❖ Over 5% of the world’s population – or 466 million people – has disabling
hearing loss (432 million adults and 34 million children). It is estimated
that by 2050 over 900 million people – or one in every ten people – will
have disabling hearing loss.

5. Emotional impact of hearing loss
for seniors
Problems that stem from hearing loss in the elderly include:
❖ Depression
❖ Withdrawal from social life
❖ Loneliness
❖ Anger
❖ Decreased personal safety
❖ Cognitive decline
❖ Poor health

6. SIGNS OF HEARING LOSS
Some people have a hearing problem without realizing it. You
should see your doctor if you:
❖ Have trouble hearing over the telephone
❖ Find it hard to follow conversations when two or more
people are talking
❖ Often ask people to repeat what they are saying
❖ Need to turn up the TV volume so loud that others complain
www.poonyah.co.in
7. ❖ Have a problem hearing because of background noise
❖ Think that others seem to mumble
❖ Can’t understand when women and children speak to you
❖ Having trouble hearing in a noisy background, like in a restaurant.
❖ Complaining of dizziness, pain, or ringing in
their ears

8. TYPES OF HEARING LOSS
Hearing loss comes in many forms. It can range from a mild loss, in which a
person misses certain high-pitched sounds, such as the voices of women
and children, to a total loss of hearing.
There are two general categories of hearing loss:
❖ Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the inner ear
or the auditory nerve. This type of hearing loss is usually permanent.
❖ Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves cannot reach the
inner ear. The cause may be earwax buildup, fluid, or a punctured
eardrum. Medical treatment or surgery can usually restore conductive
hearing loss.
www.poonyah.co.in
9. Age-Related Hearing Loss
(Presbycusis)
One type of hearing loss, called presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss,
comes on gradually as a person ages. It seems to run in families and may
occur because of changes in the inner ear and auditory nerve. Having
presbycusis may make it hard for a person to tolerate loud sounds or to hear
what others are saying.
Age-related hearing loss most often occurs in both ears, affecting them
equally. Because the loss is gradual, someone with presbycusis may not
realize that he or she has lost some of his or her ability to hear.
www.poonyah.co.in
10. CAUSES OF HEARING LOSS
Loud noise is one of the most common
causes of hearing loss. Noise from lawn
mowers, snow blowers, or loud music can
damage the inner ear, resulting in permanent
hearing loss. Loud noise also contributes to
tinnitus. You can prevent most noise-related
hearing loss. Protect yourself by turning
down the sound on your stereo, television, or
headphones; moving away from loud noise;
or using earplugs or other ear protection
www.poonyah.co.in
12. ❖ Earwax or fluid buildup can block
sounds that are carried from the
eardrum to the inner ear. If wax
blockage is a problem, try using mild
treatments, such as mineral oil, baby
oil, glycerin, or commercial ear drops to
soften earwax. A punctured eardrum
can also cause hearing loss. The
eardrum can be damaged by infection,
pressure, or putting objects in the ear,
including cotton-tipped swabs. See
your doctor if you have pain or fluid
draining from the ear.
www.poonyah.co.in
13. ❖ Hearing loss can also result from
taking certain medications.
“Ototoxic” medications damage
the inner ear, sometimes
permanently. Some ototoxic
drugs include medicines used to
treat serious infections, cancer,
and heart disease. Some
antibiotics are ototoxic. Even
aspirin at some dosages can
cause problems.
www.poonyah.co.in
14. ❖ Heredity can cause hearing
loss, as well. But not all
inherited forms of hearing
loss take place at birth. Some
forms can show up later in
life. For example, in
otosclerosis, which is thought
to be a hereditary disease, an
abnormal growth of bone
prevents structures within
the ear from working
properly.
www.poonyah.co.in
15. Tips for Talking with Someone
with Hearing Loss
❖ In a group, include people with hearing loss in the conversation.
❖ Find a quiet place to talk to help reduce background noise,
especially in restaurants and at social gatherings.
❖ Stand in good lighting and use facial expressions or gestures to
give clues.
❖ Face the person and speak clearly.
❖ Speak a little more loudly than normal, but don’t shout.
www.poonyah.co.in
16. ❖ Do not hide your mouth, eat, or chew gum while speaking.
❖ Repeat yourself if necessary, using different words.
❖ Try to make sure only one person talks at a time.
❖ Be patient. Stay positive and relaxed.
❖ Ask how you can help.

17. Your doctor or specialist may suggest you get a hearing aid.
Hearing aids are electronic, battery-run devices that make
sounds louder. There are many types of hearing aids. Before
buying a hearing aid, ask if your health insurance will cover the
cost. Also ask if you can have a trial period so you can make sure
the device is right for you. An audiologist or hearing aid
specialist will show you how to use your hearing aid.
