Strategies for teaching mixed ability
class?
• Get the student’s name and as much
as possible one fact about them (ex.
hobby).
• Make sure that students are aware of
the aim of the lesson and what they
are expected to achieve by the end of
the lesson.
• Vary presentation techniques to cater
the students’ learning styles.
• Vary classroom management. Allow
them to work individually, by pair or by
group (mix abilities).
• At times provide a menu of work on
the group offering more than one
activity. Allow students to choose the
level of their works.
• Make use of higher order thinking
skills
• Have contingency plans for the early
finishers. In case when they are done
with the tasks earlier.
• Ensure learners’ interest in the lesson
through games, competitions and
dramatizations.
