the Netherlands: flat, 50% below sea level
17 million inhabitants
no metropolitan cities, but one metropolitan area
8 million live in the western provinces: “Randstad”
since 1960’s urbanisation, also in rural parts
since 2000 ‘shrinkage’ in rural parts

35,000 members with 150 local branches
we want:
•more safety in traffic for cyclists
•cycling routes: well maintained, smooth and
direct
•more and improved parking spaces for
bikes
•action against bicycle theft
6
7. 7
Nice things to do on a
cycling path:
•cyling to school & work
•cycling to the shop
•recreational cycling
•scooting
•inline skating
•long distance cycling
8. 8
Living with a bike
for daily cycling more important:
•safe streets where it is pleasant to be
•the public area should be a living area
•walking, playing, cycling, staying in safety
•the ‘human scale’ or ‘human size’ of the
public area

Living with a bike
a cyclist is an artist on two wheels
like a tight-rope walker
vulnerable and fragile
needed:
Sustainable safety -- street design
•everyone understands immediately how to
behave in this area
•drivers understand they have to slow down
10. 10
Living with a bike
feeling safe, looking safe = real safe
•safety in traffic by making bike paths
•safe in your own street
•safe cycling routes to shop and school
– clean and beautiful >> looks safe
– presence of other people >> feels safe
•flowers and plants: friendly (hollyhock)

Cyclenation
“We believe that each
different situation deserves
a well designed, cycle-
friendly solution and that ...
cycling is an ordinary
everyday activity that does
not require special
equipment other than a
bike.” 11

48% of children killed on UK roads were child
pedestrians. This is the highest proportion in
any western European country
• Poor speed limit enforcement
• High urban speed limits
• Lack of legal protection
(assumed liability)

Sustainable Safety within built-up areas
• Access roads
- Recreation is pivotal
- Traffic flow is less significant
- 30 km/uur = 18 mph
• Distributor roads
- Traffic flow matters 14
15. 15
Living with a bike
Access roads 30 km/u = 18 mph
focus on
• Character of the street must meet
recreational purposes, living area
• Clearly indicate the beginning of
the ‘recreational area’
• Take masures for strategic spots
• Roads not too big
• Heading towards optimal design step by step
16. 16
Living with a bike
Distributor roads 50 km/u = 31 mph
focus on:
• Traffic flow is important
• Separate fast and slow traffic
• Combine work (new sewerage or cables)
• Subsidies (from province)
17. Duurzaam veilig
sort to sort
motorised > < not-motorised
separated by a parking-strip
conclusion:
• cyclists and pedestrians next to
houses
• motorised traffic on the carriage way
snor-bike, moped, electric-bike often

Roundabouts
• Current appearance since approx. 20 years
• Cyclists have right of way (mostly)
within built-up areas
• Angled connections
• Small radius
• Intersections of distributor roads
