2. What You Need to Know
• What town council is proposing
• Why it isn’t the best option
• A better option
3. What Town Council is
Proposing
• A 10-foot standalone “multi-use” lane on
the North side of Clarendon Blvd
• A 5- to 10-foot “green space” buffer
between the multi-use lane and the
roadway
• Council and staff refer to the “Safe Routes
to Schools” grant when speaking on
funding
4. Why Bike Paths on Clarendon
are Not the Best Option

•
Safety
Cost
Necessity
Green concerns
5. Safety Concerns
• Create a dangerous situation:
– Takes riders out of the flow of traffic where
cars expect to see them
– Invites dangerous right-turn cutoffs by
motorists at stop signs
– Bicyclist discrimination/driver frustration at bikes
“being out of their lane”
– Additional road hazards like debris, broken glass,
gravel that is not dispersed by vehicle traffic
6. Cost Concerns
• Part of a $20 million infrastructure budget
• No grants have been secured to help
offset costs
• Nothing set aside in the 2014 budget for
maintenance, etc.
• Town will be getting loan for entire project
7. Concerns about Necessity
• Primary purpose of bicycle lanes has been
to maintain motorist travel speeds.
– Get the slower-moving bicycle out of the way
of the automobile.
• Clarendon is 25MPH, ends at 55MPH
Dow Road
• Bikes, walkers and cars peacefully coexist
8. Green Concerns
• The “greenway” between the bike path
and road will cause the removal of mature
trees, many of which are 50+ years old
• May cause root damage to other mature
trees
• No plan or budget in place to deal with
trash and debris
9. Sharrows: A Better Option
• A Shared-Lane Pavement
Marking (sharrow)
enhances the safe travel
of bicycles & motor
vehicles in the same
traffic lane
• Encourages safe passing
• Reduces wrong-way
bicycling
• More cost-effective
• Easier to maintain
