4. The word "photograph” is based on the Greek φ ς (phos),ῶ
meaning "light", and γραφή (graphê), meaning "drawing,
writing", together meaning "drawing with light”.

8. Aperture refers to the opening of a lens's diaphragm through
which light passes.

15. The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and
their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or
allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section.

16. One of the strongest reasons to use center composed images is to
exaggerate or make use of the symmetry in a setting. Symmetry is
when both sides of a picture look like a mirror image of each other –
or at least very similar.

17. A very powerful method of improving the composition of
photos is the use of lines. Properly used, lines can
significantly increase the impact of images.

18. Positive space refers to the main focus of a picture, while negative space
refers to the background. When used creatively and intelligently, positive
and negative space together can tell a story using visual composition
alone.

processes when looking at the visual information we lay out
to him in the form of a photograph.

The 30-degree rule is a basic
film editing guideline that
states the camera should move
at least 30 degrees between
shots of the same subject
occurring in succession.
