These are slides from a presentation I made during 2012 to the Southern Light Photography Club in Tupelo, MS. My topic included Photo Safaris (plus my free eBook), long exposures, and other exciting photo activities in which I have engaged. Then, I talked about future plans.
Most of these slides were merely items on the screen while I talked with attendees about some of the issues, tips, and topics related to the photos and activities.
The presentation is much more exciting when you see it in person. But, maybe this will give you an idea about how much fun I have with the hobby of photography.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. 2. Rules of Thirds Rules of thirds is one of the most popular methods used in photography. It is used by a lot of photographers as one of there best techniques in taking an image. This method works by dividing the image into third horizontally and vertically. Place the points of interest in the intersections or along the lines so that the photo becomes more balanced and that the image will interact with the viewer more naturally.
3. Framing Framing is another technique used in photography. This is done by taking an image and using the background as the frame or also by manipulating the image and adding frames around it. The frame used in a certain image will help attract the viewers to a particular subject or point of interest within the image. By using the framing technique to compose a picture it creates perspective and shows depth.
4. Leading Lines A natural line in a photography can mean anything. It could be intentional or not. By looking closely at the lines they could lead you in a certain focal point and create a tension in the photograph. It could also make a visual statement with each composition. Diagonal lines seem to be the most strongest lines there is. It tends to create a visual path that leads the eye to the focal point of the image. On the other hand repetitive lines are interpreted by the eye as a background.
5. Balance and Weight It is important to balance the physical components of a photograph. The colours of the image are one of the things we need to balance in photography. Photos that focus on primary colours rent to be more dramatic. But, too many high-energy colours, can overwhelm the viewer and might cause anxiety instead of the viewer liking the image produced. If you balance the tones of the image it is more likely that the outcome will be good and successful.
6. Simplicity Many photographers only concentrate in the simplicity of an image. Photographers do this by only highlighting the main components that add to the image itself. This will focus the viewers eye exactly where the photographer wants to. By changing angles and perspective or maybe getting up close to the subject of the image, you can often produce a photo that is simply beautiful as it is.
7. Format : Portrait & Landscape The objective of portrait is to capture the part you like, the personality and mood of the subject. The main focus of portraiture is the persons face, although the whole body and also the background can be included. The style landscape in photography is mostly used by professionals and amateurs. Landscape is usually used to capture the beauty of nature and other subjects that needs to be seen through art. Landscape photographers usually convey an appreciation of the world.
8. Birds-Eye-View Birds-Eye-View is an image taken when the position is higher than the subject. Looking down on an image can be achieved in a number of ways. For photographers, birds-eye-view is a way to add interest to a picture or relate important information about the subject.
9. Worms-Eye-View Worms-Eye-View is the opposite of birds-eye-view. This style makes an image look tall and imposing. Worms-Eye-View is very common in cinematography as a means of making characters appear more powerful.
