Perennialism
A philosophy in education that believes in
knowledge that transcends time. This
focuses in the knowledge gained from the
past to educate the future generation. It
teaches liberal arts, religion and philosophy.

religious in nature, developed
by Thomas Aquinas. For him,
one should teach those things
that are everlastingly important
to all people, namely principles
and reasoning.
Robert M. Hutchins
a perennialist educator that
strongly believed in having
basic traditional liberal arts in
all schools and extracurricular
activities were emotive and
irrelevant to the learning
process.
Mortimer Adler
organized the Great Book of
the Western World curriculum
along with Hutchin. He
believes that philosophy
should be part of the main
curriculum in schools.

• Perennialism include its ability to explain similarities
between different cultures and its emphasis on the
importance of certain values, such as progress.
• It promotes self-sufficiency and discourages
overspending.
• It is a holistic approach to understanding the world
and life.
Weaknesses of Perennialism
• Perennialism can be seen as deterministic because it
does not account for change over time or for cultural
differences.
• Some argues that it does not account for the
complexities of human behavior and social change.
• It does not consider change over time.
• It does not account the diversity of culture, norms,
and history.

various settings, such as schools or universities.
• The role of the teacher differs depending on the
setting and age group they are teaching.
• The teacher is the one who sets example for students
to follow and is responsible for providing a safe
learning environment.

● Lecturing should be prioritize and make sure that
the correct point is being relayed across the
students.
● Questions asked to learners must have only one
correct answer and things need to be put to
memory.
● Focuses on teaching concepts and explaining
how they are meaningful to students.
● Uses methods of teaching that is best
suited for disciplining the mind of the students.
How to Teach?
● The classroom should have a logical and
systematic order.
● No need to memorize names in order to have an
environment of equality between teachers and
students.
● Groupings of students should be based on their
ability.
