Group Cohesion Theme
Dominick Petitto Dr. Kevin Wilkerson The University of Scranton Group Consultation Activity
January 20, 2016 Abstract There are many themes that surface throughout the group process. These
themes hold important steps in the group process. These steps allow the group to grow together in
trust, and better cohesion. Some themes that surface in the group session are anxieties/fears that
occur with disclosing, conflicts that occur between members of the group, how choices affect us
now, leadership of the group and how to deal with issues that arise in the group. Key Words: trust,
cohesion, anxieties/fears, disclosing, conflict, choices, leadership Self–Disclosure in Groups There
also seems to be a few people in group who are still having trouble sharing with the group. We see

A person in the group corrected one person in the group for the word/phrase that they used for their
own personal identification. Conflict, in this session, even through brought up on multiple occasions
throughout the session were addressed by the members of the group. The members of the group
worked through this conflict by clarifying what members had said or respectfully stating their
opinion, while acknowledging the other persons point of view. Choices Another theme that was
present in the group was talking about choices people have made in the past and how that the
choices they made were the best they could do at the time. The group talked about how the choices
they have made in the past effect them today in negative way. People in the group talked about how
the problems that have had causes many issues today. They talked about how there was regret for
the decision that they have made in the past, which causes trouble with the way people behave in the
here and now. According to the people in the group this regret for the decisions they made make it
hard for them to make decision

Group Development Observation Paper
Wheelan and her associates came up with a classification system referred to as Group Development
Observation System (GDOS) to categorize the verbal interactions among group members. The eight
Group Development Observation System categories include;
Dependency statements. Those people that follow the primary mood in the group and they seek for
direction from other members.
Counter dependency statements. They seek independence by rebelling from the direction of the
group and leadership. Fight statements. These challenge other people openly through criticism
argumentativeness and aggression.
Flight statements. This is an attempt to avoid working as well as demonstrating lack of commitment
to the group.
Pairing statements. These are referred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These groups rely on technology to communicate with one another and to accomplish the tasks
allocated by the organization. One benefit of a virtual team is that they use technology and this can
help increase efficiency and productivity of the members. The virtual teams also assist in the
development of intellectual capital. The composition of the virtual groups helps improve quality as
well as the outcome. The other benefit is the efficiency of communication. Some of the challenges
include the distance between the members. The significant distance may dilute leadership, weaken
human relations as well as amplify dysfunction. Virtual teams are hard to manage especially when it
comes to goal setting, task distribution, coordination and member motivation. Virtual organizations
rely on trust that the other members will fulfill their roles since it is not possible to monitor them
closely (Hoppe, 2011). The virtual teams may face some internet challenges such as slow internet or
disconnection. This problem can be handled through the use of alternative methods of
communication such as mobile phones. While making a virtual team, the team members should
address all challenges which may hinder communication by coming up with all possible substitutes
of means of communication. These organizations rely heavily on the internet for video conferencing
and sending emails. However, when the internet fails, they

Group Dynamics
The continual meeting of the groups helped our overall development into a better flowing group. We
each learned how to better interact with each other as the sessions went on and we became a better
group in the process. One of the ways the group changes from the beginning was that we all became
more comfortable sharing our thoughts and ideas with each other. In the beginning we did not know
each other that well so it was hard to share ideas with each other, for fear of being judged or looked
down on. But once we got to know each other and felt safe to talk about our own opinions and ideas,
the group dynamic improved. The change was definitely a positive one and one that allowed us to
challenge each others ideas or questions someones thought, ... Show more content on

In the beginning it was odd and uncomfortable because we didn't know each other or what was
expected of us. But after we learned what the expectations were we can feel more comfortable
within the group which was a nice thing. I think as a whole the group got along pretty well and for
the most part we were able to work together to attempt to solve the issue, there were little issues
here and there, but that can be expected within any group. The group sessions were also a good way
to learn how to work productively with people you may not like or get along with, and its a good
example of how to separate what you feel about the person outside the group from what you have to

Group 5 Legal Issues
Group 5: Legal Issues
Working Together for a Better Grade This project has been a very enlightening experience on how
you have to sometimes let go of the control and let someone else take over. My grade will be based
on a group effort instead of my own individual work and that really did leave me feeling
uncomfortable especially since we were not allowed to choose who was in my group and who
shouldn't be in my group. I am lucky to say that after really speaking and interacting with my group
members, Luna and Lasheika, I felt a lot more secure in my grade for this project. That is not to say
we did not have any problems. At first, we had some technical difficulties that resulted in Luna not
being able to communicate through group text but she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems to be a hard case of senioritis and it seems to be highly contagious. To be frank, it was quite
challenging just to get myself started on this project. In the end, I did manage to muster up some
drive to complete this project to the best of my ability. I learned a lot about legal issues because I did
find that the best way to learn something is knowing that you have to teach it to a group of peers. It
is part of the incentive that motivated me to finish this project. I feel very excited to be almost
finished with school and after completing this project I feel as though everything else is going to be
downhill from here on out. So, even though I could not wait for the end of this experience. This was
a very good learning opportunity for me. I learned a long time ago that you have to know how to
play well with others but this project drove the point home to me and provided me with a new friend

Our topic of this presentation is introducing a non–profit organization and we choose to run an
organization which is helping the underprivileged children. Our organization is called Shield for
Children. We worked as a team and finished this presentation together. We had a lot of troubles at
the beginning. For example, we have different opinions on the meeting time since we both had our
own busy schedule. As a result, we couldn't group together and discussed about the presentation.
However, we opened a What's app Group and we could communicate with each other easier inside
that application. So we could able to finish the presentation at the end. Other than that, some people

Some people are the informative giver, they provide extra information during the group discussions.
They helped our group discussion become more informative. Some people are the Administrator,
always lists out a content which makes sure our discussion is on track. Sometimes we might play
more than one role at the same time. For example, Maggie is an administrator and information giver.
She kept our discussion on track and provided different information which help us to prepare the
presentation. John is an elaborator and sensor, he elaborated our point and present it on the
PowerPoint. When we worked so hard and our productivity were too low, he will ask for a break. So
that we can take a rest and have a great performance after that. Enson is an initiator, he always gives
some new ideas that helped us to solve different kinds of problems such as he suggests us to provide
learning chances and materials instead of playing to the underprivileged children. Alex is a
gatekeeper, he makes sure everyone in the group have the chance to speak and present their idea
about the underprivileged children. For me, I think I am an initiator. It is because I suggest some
ways to advertise our organization like the Facebook page and the website. However, I am an

the vision of guests. After re–adjusting the seating arrangement and my layout, I finally found a way
to spread out seven people filming among the crowd. Lastly, I had to ensure we had enough

Group Work Protocols
PART D: Group Work Protocols
1. Group formation and management – When deciding on how to organise groups the composition is
often made with classroom management, student ability or classroom space in mind (Baines et al.,
2008). However, it is important to plan where students are going to sit, who is going to be in each
group, and what role or responsibility each student will have in the group. For example, a teacher
could delegate responsibility to specific students from each group give out the paper, distribute
equipment or collect the work at the end for the session. Teachers could encourage students to rely
on other in the group rather than ask questions of the teacher (Cowley, 2006) and by doing so,
students can learn to be more self–reliant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firstly, assessment of learning occurs at the end of a activity, lesson, or series of lesson for the
purpose of reporting at the end of a time period such as the school term or semester. Assessment of
learning is also undertaken as part of the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy
[NAPLAN], Year 12 Australian Tertiary Assessment Rank [ATAR], or international monitors of
student performance such as PISA surveys which provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate
what can do or what they understand (Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority [ACARA],
2016). Assessment of learning provides a teacher with evidence of student achievement at a
particular point in time and is used to plan future teaching and learning, and provide all stakeholders
with information about the progress students are making in and out of the classroom (Whitton et al.,
2016). This evidence may be used to make judgements about student achievement against objectives
or standards and identify additional support or interventions required. Stakeholders may include the
student, the parent, the teacher, the principal, the school council and the Department of Education
and be used for reporting to parents and record keeping accountability. The tools used for this kind
of assessment may include a standardised tests or group intelligence tests which are termed norm

Group Reflection : Group Process
Group Reflection
Group
My concept of what a group consist of is a story that needs to be told and heard from many people
with similar issues or problems. The group is a tool to help each member to gain some insight on
how they can change or make a difference in their lives for the future. I feel that a group is a place
where new relationships can develop and to find self again.
Group Process
The group process is facilitated by a counselor by the process has to be done by the members. It can
be easy or hard depending on the individual and how much they want to disclose about themselves.
The process is measureable and goals are set to help guide the members to stay focus on what they
need to work on. Therefore, there five stages to help guide the facilitator and the members. They are
forming, storming, norming performing and adjourning. First they must understand how to achieve
their primary task, the purpose they joined the group ( ). Next the members are identifying who is
going to be on top or bottom. Meaning who is going to be the control hierarchy and who is going to
be the quiet one. Each member attempts to establish his or her preferred amount of initiative and
power ( ). The third phase a group is the development of mature group cohesiveness ( ). They are
starting to build trust, increase morale and self–disclosure. Fourth, the group members are working
the group and changes are occurring depending on the individual. Lastly, the group members are
beginning to

Group Counseling : A Group
Introduction This paper is a brief reflection of what this writer has learned throughout this group–
counseling course. Topics discuss significant things this writer has learned about group counseling,
about herself as a group leader, skills and experiences to develop, current strengths and weakness in
leading group and types of groups this writer is interested in leading.
Group Counseling The most significant thing this writer has learned about group counseling in this
course is that the process is the groups'. When the process is the groups', as sessions progress, the
facilitator will not need to be as involved, as the group members will carry the group. This
knowledge is something this writer was aware of, but did not fully understand and this writer now
feels that she has a good understanding of this.
Being a Group Leader Even though this writer has been facilitating groups for the past three years,
this writer has gained much knowledge throughout this course about herself as a group leader.
Something that this writer learned about herself is her want for the group to be "successful". Though
this writer is aware that a group members progress and/or success depends on the member and not
the group facilitator, this writer has in the past felt discouraged when a youth had disclosed that they
had not gained something from group. This course has strengthened this writers knowledge that it is
the group members responsibility to be successful in the group process and

Leadership And The Life Cycle Of A Group . A Group Is A
Leadership and the Life Cycle of a Group
A group is a living thing, developing over time and adapting to the environment and expectations
imposed upon it as it grows. When observed carefully, a pattern of distinct phases emerge in this
growth process. It is important to recognize and take advantage of these various stages of
development in order to maximize group effectiveness and efficiency. There are several different
models for small group development, but Tuckman 's model is "probably the most famous
sequential–stage theory" (Johnson & Johnson, 2016, p.27). This paper will discuss the five stages of
group development according to Tuckman 's model as well as some practical leadership guidelines
that will help a group remain effective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of great value at this stage is encouragement and patience. The reason for the conflict is generally
insecurity (Bonebright, 2010, p. 114), so providing a strong support system an reassurance can help
move a group to the next phase.
As members of the group begin to feel safe and secure, the conflict will settle and the group will
develop a bond and unified goals. Labeled a period of norming, it is "characterized by close
relationships and cohesiveness" (Group Development, 2003). In fact, this stage is so characterized
by relationship that it could almost be viewed as a honeymoon phase. Group members will
frequently set aside differences and unity becomes a priority. It is important at this stage to
emphasize honesty and creativity because the group will likely be trying so hard to be amenable that
some members may hold back. Others will be ready to open up given their newfound sense of
security within the group. This is also a critical time for the group because it typically delineates a
time to commit (Johnson & Johnson, 2016). If a group reaches this stage and not all members are on
board, it may hinder progress.
Once a group has developed cohesiveness, it will truly begin to produce. This phase of effectiveness
is titled performing according to Tuckman 's model. At this stage, the group is a "problem–solving
instrument", capable of working through obstacles and accomplishing goals (Bonebright, 2010, p.
114). Is it not uncommon for groups

Group Reflection Paper
Reflection Paper
In this class I have been able to experience group projects in a different manner than before. I have
always struggled with social anxiety and group experiences have always been hard for me. If it was
not for the help of many wonderful people, I do not think I would have been able to take this class.
This group experience has been one I always will remember, because it was the first experience
where I felt comfortable. In my group we used inclusivity, empowering, and process–orientation to
help accomplish our goals.
Inclusivity is a big aspect of group work. Without it no one would feel a part of the team and not
want to do any work. Our group banded together because of our seating proximities. However, we
chose to stay in the group because we got along so well. One of our group members slowly worked
his way into our group and we unknowingly included him in. For the final project we were all
excited to start working on together and collectively decided to do the best work we are capable of.
We used inclusivity during this project by allowing everybody to express their ideas. What surprised

Without it nothing would get done. My group wanted this final project to be one of the best videos
in class. When we all got together to come up with the idea of the video, we just knew our terms, but
did not have an idea we all agreed on. It was not until we took out a notebook and started writing
ideas down that we started to get our group dynamic together. We made sure everybody expressed
their idea and gave their pitch on the video. While we filmed the video, everybody gave their view
on how each scene should be filmed. However, it was not a stressful experience we all joked and
laughed throughout making the video. This group experience made me realize that group projects
can be fun. They do not have to be a horrible process, we just have to communicate and make sure

Group Immigration Project
What have you gained/learned from this process thus far? The needs assessment report has been a
great learning experience since the first day of the assignment due to the group setting of the project
and the immigration learning topic. From the process, so far I have gained team work collaboration
through technology as none of the team members live near each other. I have learned how to
communicate electronically and we have found the perfect method for everyone to be able to
participate. In regards to our group immigration topic, through the research done for the proposal I
have learned the many ways the community offers language assistance for all ages. The community
aids all immigrants no matter their primary language, and the assistance is easily obtainable. For
youth, the school districts offer testing level classes for all immigrant children to be able to catch up

If so, has the group resolved the challenges? In the beginning of the group assignment we faced a
couple of challenges in regards to schedules for meeting times and the proper communication tool to

our availability and find the perfect time for all team members. In addition, we had to find the
proper way to communicate that would be great for all team members, after email discussion, found
a group chat website that we could all sign in to and save our conversations to keep track of what we
agreed on. Another group challenge we experienced was putting the first proposal together as we all
have different methods of writing and explaining our topic. We each wrote a part of the paper and
combined the input from each team member to created our final proposal. In addition, we took turns

Group Assessment
From mine perspective, group assessment is the hardest parts that I have done when I started the
university. As what I have learnt from the group presentation in Introduction of Management course,
a high relationship and the enthusiastic members would create the best performance. Our team is a
diversity team because we all have the difference in backgrounds and cultures. Chloe and I come
from the same country, which is Vietnam and we are international students. Genesis, who grow up in
Australia, but have the Venezuela background. And last but not least, Hosna, she is from
Afghanistan and also grow up in Australia. As a leader in the team, I decided to monitoring the team

As I said in the introduction, our team used social media, such as, Facebook to contacted with each
other. In my view, I think Messenger in Facebook is the best communication way for us because I
was able to check if my team members are active now or not as well as Facebook also has the video
call function. Our group did not establish any rules or protocols for behaviours because I wanted the
members do not feel any pressure. Personally, I think a comfortable spirit creates a better result than
anything else. Luckily, each member in the team did quite well for their parts, so we did not have
any arguments. I think that each of us had a different role in contributing to the team successful.
Hosna and Genesis with their meticulous characteristics, they actually helped us to fix every little
mistakes in our parts. Chloe always created the group meeting as well as booked the room for us to
practice. I feel that I was the one, who ensure that our group were on the right track and reminded
everyone to finish their task. In my perspective, I think that our group developed a sense of
belonging to the team. Therefore, we were able to complete the assessment without any

Yalom: Group Scenarios
In the small clip, from the beginning, Yalom is observed activating the focus on the here–and–now.
He discusses in chapter six that he would begin this process in the first group session, after all
members discuss their reason for joining the group. He would highlight that all members have likely
made impressions of each other, and then invites them to talk about what they came up with. In the
group video, this intervention stirred a conversation that provided the opportunity for members to
enact their styles of relating to others with members of the group, Alice became quiet, Alan rescued
her, etc. I think the process became evident as the first comment made was that Alice was quiet. It
seems that meanwhile she asserts that she tries to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believes that therapist transparency can lead to "here–and–now activation and process
illumination" (p. 218). In addition, it seems that Yalom believes that by being authentic the therapist
can decentralize her role, and can "foster a deeper exploration on the client's part" (p. 218).
Meanwhile mixed results have been reported regarding self–disclosure (Audet, 2011), I find Yalom's
argument compelling as he asserts the following: "I am advocating that therapists relate
authentically to clients in the here–and–now of the therapy hour, not that they reveal their past and
present in a detailed manner" (p. 223). He goes on to explain that he doesn't believe it is helpful
when therapists talk about ways they have overcome personal challenges, indicating appropriate
boundaries when it comes to transparency, and clients' wellbeing in mind. I agree that certain forms
of self–disclosure can pose ethical concerns, as Epstein (1994) indicates; however, some clients will
benefit from the therapist's disclosure (Audet & Everall, 2003), and their curiosity does not come
from intentionally breaking boundaries, and a therapist's rigid standpoint could hinder the
relationship. I have seen therapists have a strong reaction when clients asked a personal question,
however, I believe that it makes sense that some clients would need to feel connected by knowing
something about the therapist for their comfort level to

Group Value Analysis
For Human Communications group project, my group was accumulated of five members who
worked together to find the influence of Youtube in our culture. The group was organized into five
topics about Youtube to create a whole project. The project was split into the business, history,
blogging, music, and sports of Youtube. My group made thorough decisions, was engaging, had
little to no conflicts, and got our point across. I give my group members a high evaluation and
enjoyed discovering new topics, learning how to function within a small group, and realizing how to
apply communication techniques into real life situations.
My group was true to their opinions, work, and expectation of peers. Ethical communication was
exhibited in my small group. This means my group was focused on getting our work done while still
maintain reasonable relationships among group members. To generate ideas, my group used
brainstorming, which was a way to create and organize ideas and make sure everyone understands

Comparison Between Group D And Group C
What is seen in the data is that there is not a steady decline in the reaction time when you compare
each column to the previous or next respectively. The time increases when comparing Group A to
Group B, but not Group B to Group C. The same also applies to Group C to Group D and then a
decrease from Group D to Group E. Figure 1 shows a clearer picture of the RT when compared to all
of the reaction time. Even though the time decreases in some areas, there is clear increase or RT
when looking from the youngest to olderst. When looking at the graph, there is statistical
significance in some of the areas and not in others. All data was calculated at a 95% confidence
level. The difference from Group A to Group B is only 0.2538 seconds, but when the data is
compared to each other, the probability (P–Value) is 0.000287. This is a significant difference
between the two. From Group B to Group C, there is a 0.01 second decrease in time, which has a P–
Value of 0.4698. This is not a statistical difference and leaves room for this time to not be a normal
outcome. Group C and Group D has a 0.2289 seconds increase, but when calculated with the raw
data, there is no significant difference with a P–Value of 0.0833. Group D to Group E is a 0.1252
decrease with a P–Value of 0.3719 making it not significant. Group E to Group F has a 0.6351

This week I would like to discuss about a past decision made for the group project on one of my
nursing class. There was a total of six people in our group for our group project. Before getting
together as a group we analyzed the group project and distributed the task to all members of the
group equally. Every one of us were given sufficient time to accomplish the work we were assigned
for. We communicated through email and text messages. When everyone had finished their part we
met in a group to discuss the group project. At the beginning of the group project, unilateral decision
making was involved. One member in our group didn't want to consider other group member's
perception. Her loud and dominating voice dominated other member's idea.

Group Dynamics: Group Analysis
The group dynamic can be influenced by the facilitator through their actions and response to the
group. In my professional life there were times when I was tasked to lead break out groups in an
effort to discuss areas that were working and areas where we as a team could do things better. In
these small break out group experiences I recognize strengths and challenges in my ability as a
leader. Without formal experience in the helping profession I was unsure how I would relate my
personal experience to the group dynamic. In reading Yalom, I recognized the skills used in my job
to facilitate break out groups was similar to those used to lead process groups. Strengths and
weaknesses Today I am an effective group leader because I have had ... Show more content on

While the group engages in the warm up my role is to keep an open mind for prompt recognition. A
decision needs to be made based on this observation of the group whether to choose the protagonist
or activate the group to choose (Durić, Veljković, & Tomić 2006 p. 9). Because the group is small I
would like to allow the group to select which photograph they would like to use for the process
group. Unless there is a member who has presented a strong evocative photograph that would create
a powerful group experience I would like to allow the group to choose. However if the picture were
as powerful as I suspect I believe the members would select that one as well. If they chose
something else it may be an opportunity for me to review how I perceive the importance of an event.
The group will then decide which photograph will be the focus of the psychodrama and the member
who was selected will act out their scene for the group. The member will use pieces of furniture to
set their scene and they will be the protagonist of the story (Durić, Veljković, & Tomić 2006 p. 11). I
found this technique to be of interest because it develops the skills I spoke of lacking. In using this
technique the members will select the direction the group will take in order to give the most
meaningful experience to all of

Group Analysis Project
In my small group for the film project analysis project I worked with four other students, Deonte,
Frank, Osama, and Stephen. The specific purpose that we came together for was to analyse the film,
Oz, The Great and Powerful and identify the different properties of communication in the film and
how they were used. We held our group meetings after class three times and once before class. Our
group had no clear leader, and instead each member was self–directed, and instead our group came
to a general consensus at each meeting as to how tasks should be divided and what should be done
before the next meeting. While there were significant setbacks to our group's progress, aside from
one anomaly our group worked well together and had only one major conflict. During our first
meeting, we introduced ourselves, established our channels of communication, and determined the
medium for presenting our group project. Our first meeting combined the opening and feedforward
stages of the five small group stages. We decided to communicate through both group text and
email, that way we would have multiple ways to communicate to ... Show more content on

Osama was the information giver, distributing the movie to each group member, and clarifying bits
of the movie's plot and characters. Stephen was the energizer, as he tended to be the person who kept
us focused on the project when we started to drift of topic. I was the procedural technician for the
group, creating the Google Slides document, connecting everyone to the document so everyone
could work on it, and getting the clips from the movie together for the presentation. Deonte often
played the role of recorder, as he wrote most of the group's progress reports and wrote most of the
notes about who was doing what task. We all played the role of initiator–contributor, as everyone
came up with at least one idea for topics or how to present the

Group Collaboration Analysis
GROUP COLLABORATION THESIS Most everyone knows how to work in a team but, not
everyone comes from the same background or holds the same set of moral and ethical standards.
Each person in a group has his or her own ideas about everything. When working in a group it
seems that it is easy for a person to get lost in his or hers own task and forget about the group aspect
of the project at hand. The article "Help Your Team Agree on how they'll Collaborate" gives the
reader a solution to the group issue. The tool or advice that she gives is let the group agree on what
the rules of conduct should be to help blend the group, thus making a smoother operating group with
less conflict. The rules of conduct help the group know ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The biggest thing that was emphasized was the group working together to come up with a set of
rules that governs that group. When a team collectively comes up with its own rules and regulation
there is less likely of a chance for conflict. If there is conflict the group potentially will be able to
resolve it on its own. A method that is used is the nominal method of decision making. This means
that each member comes to the meeting with his or her own set of rules and guidelines for the group.
Each person reads the set of rules aloud, then as a group they vote on the top ten rules. Those top ten
then are adopted by the group. It is important to periodically evaluate the rules, especially when and
if the group back slides. This will help the group regain structure and focus on the task. I do not
think that this approach will fit every group setting. I think that the process of setting ruled and
guidelines for a group can be a lengthy process whether you do a pre–questionnaire or not. I think
that the place where this can and will be the most effective is in a workplace where the employees
are with the company for a long period of time. A place like Mc Donald's, where there

What did you learn by working together in your group?
It was very interesting to work together in my group. I learnt more deeply about the African
American issue. All members in my group was very supportive. We collaborate with each other in a
timely manner. The biggest fear I had working in a group environment was the conflict. There was
no conflict because we all shared our thoughts and problems with each other. That makes this group
experience great.
What did you learn from each others' Group Project Abstracts?
The group 2 worked on African Americans racism issue. They beautifully present their abstract
through PowerPoint. I didn't know that Colin Kaepernick had sat in 2 other occasions before the
nation got attention. Also, I really liked how they present the other players kneeling incidents. It is
interesting to know that White American World Cup Winner Megan Rapinoe also follows the Colin
Kaepernick.

families apart. Instead of deporting the DACA immigrants we need to make changes in the
immigrations policies to make the American economy strong. The group 2 issue of inequality in

Group Identification Definition
Per Anthony & Mullen (2016) in group dynamics, norming is part of the group counseling stage
where problems are solved, and group members began to understand the group and respect the
group leader. Using identification and hope in a domestic violence group can have a positive change
on peer relationships within the group (Gladding, 2016). Identification occurs when group members
can relate to another member and hope is thoughts that the future and possibilities will be better
(Gladding, 2016). In a group setting, identification is essential to have cohesion among the members
(Gladding, 2016). Moreover, I believe that if I know others in the group share my experience, I
would feel more at ease. When I think about the instillation of hope, I

For our final group presentation, I worked with Alisha Sandridge, Makaylah Hunter–Toney, Jalen
Douglas, and Josh Blackwell. Each of the group members had contributions that helped us finish the
project. For this project, I wrote our proposal that was due in April, I participated in both sets of
interviews by recording as well as asking questions. I was also responsible for gathering information
on the cultural competency portion of the presentation. Also, I edited the final draft of the
PowerPoint presentation. Although I fell as though our presentation came out very well, as a part of

did. The responsibly for this fell on me because I noticed that things were not getting done ... Show

As far as evaluations for the rest of my group members, everyone did contribute, but there were
slight inconveniences. For Alisha Sandridge, I feel as though her efforts deserve an eight. This is
because up until the week before the due date of the project, she was not responding in the group
message, and so she was not able to contribute to the interviews in the doctor's office or give any
other contributions before then. Makaylah Hunter– Toney as a group member results in a seven. I
give her a seven partially because she also did not respond in the group message until the week of,
and while she did her parts from then on out, I also felt as though she was a little critical of Alisha.
For example, Alisha choose to decorate our poster as her contribution, and the whole time she was
decorating Makaylah complained about little things Alisha did the whole time. It was uncomfortable
for the rest of us and not fair to Alisha. For Jalen, I rate her efforts a nine, this is only because Jalen
went home the weekend before the presentation when there was still work to be done, and we all
needed to meet together. Other than that Jalen completed all the things she stepped up to do

Forum 12
Johan Rivera
Liberty University
Introduction
In this forum, will be addressing the important concepts learned about groups. Will be describing
my personal experience working with my assigned group for this course. Furthermore, will be
addressing the main three concepts learned through the duration of this course. Those concepts are
tribulation, integrity, and team.
Group
"Group work is a teaching strategy that promotes academic achievement and socialization"
(Frykedal, Chiriac, 2011). This method is often used since allow individuals to combine their skills

39). Part of the role of an efficient leader is to recognize that conflicts and unexpected situations will
be presented in any type of organization. Leaders will have to make critical and tough decisions that
might bring tribulation. A leader should be able to take control of the situation and provide guidance,
always taking in consideration the safety and well being of those who follow. It is important that
leaders make choices that "protects the organization and others from undue distraction to the
mission" (Dees, 2013, p. 44).
Integrity
"Integrity is simply telling the truth or staying true to a set of values" (Dees, 2013, p80). Integrity is
essential in the effectiveness of a leader. "Integrity is often cited as a critical component of
leadership"(Palanski, Simons, & Treviño, 2011). An effective leader understands the need to be an
example of honesty and truthfulness." While leaders may wholeheartedly agree with the concept for
a subordinate to fully embrace effective followership, he or she must trust in the leader/follower
relationship"(Satterlee, 2013, p. 7). Followers will place their trust in a leader that act upon values,
moral principles and beliefs. Leaders should understand that every decision would have an effect on
those around themselves. "The more choices you make based on integrity, the more this highly
prized value will affect your relationships with family and friends, and finally, the fundamental
acceptance of yourself"(Dees, 2013, p.

Working In A Group Analysis
Working in a group was a great way to get to know my classmates. Despite our differences, we
worked together and completed the assignment. I like working in a group, but sometimes I would
rather do the assignment on my own. Group work has its good and bad effects. Group work allows a
big assignment to be completed at a faster pace than working alone. I did not know much about
zombies, but some of my other group members did. Each individual has different viewpoints;
therefore, it helped us accomplish our ten–paragraph essay in a small amount of time. My group as a
whole was assigned the role of public health. Haley was the leader, and she assigned each group
member a specific task that we were responsible for. Each of us had to write two paragraphs about a
specific situation that was given to us. We worked together and wrote the introduction and
conclusion. I did not like the fact that my grade relied on other people. On the other hand, I had
some control over that by telling them how I felt about what was going on. None of my group
members was a total slacker. Although, I did not know my group members personally, so I was not
sure whether or not they would take responsibility and complete what was assigned to them. They
all pulled through and we achieved our goal of completing the assignment. We each worked ... Show

I liked having my peers there to help me with my writing. They let me know if I needed to make any
changes to my paragraphs. I was there to help them with their writing also. I liked that we broke up

would have been lost. I would not have known where to even begin. Being in a group allows you to
throw your ideas out there, and combine them and come up with something great. I do not know

This semester Candis Riggs, Taylor Maynor, Oliva Clark, and Dannon Terrell were assigned to
Group 8, which they would later rename The Inclusionists. Over the course of the semester The
Inclusionists moved in and out of the group development stages, utilized several methods of
communication, conflict handling, and explored motivation and leadership styles. All of these
factored into and affected Group 8's efforts and the final accomplishment of their goals.
Communication is a key part of any group collaboration but it was especially so in Group 8. This
was due to so much of the assignment relying on the collaboration all members and not just
individual abilities. A big step in the forming stage of Group 8 is when Oliva collected each

push through the mounting stress and keep their productivity high. Also, there were several
miscommunications due to the use of online messaging as the main form of speaking. All in all the

The And Of The Group
At this point, Group A and Group B displayed interorganizational processes. Interorganizational
refers to processes that exist between organization and other organizations in their environment
(Wells, 1995). Kristine tested the boundaries by addressing her feeling towards a member in Group
B after the group processed. As a result, both group members felt the system (the entire class)
dynamic and setting was unsafe and loose. The mixed feelings of anger and hurt influenced the
dynamics of the system for a few weeks. The group as a whole increased their personal boundaries
to avoid being attacked or hurt. Group A has enter the storming phase with Group B. Storming is the
conflict, polarization and resistance to the group influence and task (Tuckman, 1965). Storming
should occur within the group and not between two separate groups. The group rigid personal
boundaries around their roles prohibited the group from entering the storming stage with in the
group. The class as a whole went through norming, and performing separate and together due to the
environment and temporal boundaries. According to McCollum's (1990), factors that influences the
group development are environment embeddedness and temporal boundaries such as time. As a
system, outside of the classroom environment, all members of each group are friendly towards each
other. Having a group outing helped members to forget about the tension or avoid the drama by not
talking about group dynamics outside of the classroom

different roles that they will play when they work. The first group role that a student can play is
''The facilitator'' which means the student that bring everybody to the group and start asking how

I learned two important things about group communication. Sitting in a circle makes talking easier
for everyone because then you will have clear eye view of who is talking. This helping eliminate
any miscommunication with not knowing who said what and being able to be heard a lot easier with
the open space. The book states "An essential task of the meeting facilitator is to orchestrate
meaningful interaction during the meeting so that all group members have the opportunity to share".
Having a circle makes it a lot easier for everyone to be heard by going in a order and taking turns
with who will be talking next making sure not to skip anybody so everyone will be heard. Working
in groups takes much coordination so that everybody will continue to work effectively. The book
states "To contact members when questions or issues arise even if you're not in a scheduled
meeting". This being a major part of group communication being able to adjust your time to help out
somebody who has a question or concern. The group Imessage really helped at times like this to
help coordinate with who would be answering the question based off what the question regarded but
still including everybody in the conversation so nobody will be left out and everybody would still be
updated with everything that's going

Powerpoint: Group Analysis
Usually I would not want to be a part of a group for an essay project simply because I wouldn't want
to put my grade in jeopardy, however, my recent experience has made me rethink my initial opinion.
Being able to work in a group has taught me a lot and it will help me in my future by allowing me to
work well with others and put a greater importance on making my communication skills better, get
work done in a timely manner, plan and compromise, as well as collaborative work. To start off the
beginning stages in preparing the group research PowerPoint we were placed into random groups,
this helped me by not giving me the opportunity to just try and pick my friends to do the project. I
got to work with classmates I wouldn't usually associate with, taking me out of my comfort zone
and opening my mind to new ideas, and friendships. As a group we then selected a topic we all
wanted to do a presentation on which was "should school officials be allowed to search student's
lockers?" It was a very controversial and excellent topic to do both research and present. As a group
we organized our presentation by splitting the PowerPoint into four sections, the first being

Group Process And Dynamics Analysis
During this past week in class, I was able to learn more about Group Process and Dynamics. In this
reflection, I will talk about the "Building a House" activity and what I learned about diversity issues
from this exercise. I will also give details on my observations linking them to behaviors listed in our
class Observation Grid paper. On Monday, we partook in the group activity "Building a House". Our
instructions were to as a group build a house made out of Legos. Before the activity we were each
given a piece of paper with individual assignments written on them. We were told that we could not
share details about our assignments with the other group members. We were split into two groups of
three, Nataliya and Ms. Nadia we selected to be observers during this exercise and were place on

Since we couldn't communicate verbally I noticed that most of the communication during the
exercise consisted of visual cues such as body language. Gestures like hand signals, body signals
and eye movement were utilized by all group members. I noticed nearly every group member nod
and shake their heads many times to indicate agreements and disagreements. This reminded me of
the importance of being able to identify nonverbal communication through body language. "People
say a lot by the body language and posture (are they leaning in, slouched over and tired, agitated
with their arms crossed, etc.); their behavior movements (nervous twitched, tapping of the foot,
wringing of their hands, etc.); and the direction of their gaze and attention." (Sage,

Group Project Reflection
Throughout my years in graduate school, I found myself with many opportunities to work on group
projects. I always found these projects to be a rewarding experience because it was not only an
opportunity to contribute my experience and ideas to the project but also listen to experience and
ideas of my teammates. However, working on a group project also meant making sure to examine
the work of my teammates and vice–versa. So for each group assignment, I always made sure to
follow certain guidelines I laid out for myself in order to get the assignment completed.
1. Ask questions – especially if I needed a teammate to clarify what they needed from me or if I not
sure about what they wrote.
2. Provide thoughtful suggestions on the work of my

Group Polarization: Helpful Or Harmful?
Group Cohesiveness Group cohesiveness is often strived for and encouraged, however, after this
chapter it is clear just how damaging cohesiveness can be to a group. While it can be much more
pleasant to work with people similar to yourself, highly cohesive groups often miss the benefits of
disagreement and diverse opinions. Often cohesiveness is so strongly supported and encouraged that
there may be punishments from varying away from group norms. If members fear punishment or
judgement from speaking against the group, biased sampling is more likely to occur. This can result
in making poor decisions and not actively using the skills each member holds. Group polarization is
also much more likely to affect a highly cohesive group in comparison to a relatively diverse group.
Group polarization can be avoided or limited by members who hold opposing views to the majority,
which cannot be supported by a highly cohesive group.
Group Polarization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If everyone in the group shares the same beliefs and each feels pressured to conform and fit in, the
group will exaggerate the situation to an extent in which they will feel that their belief is the only
acceptable belief. For example, most people feel that animal abuse is wrong, and many people
would stand up against someone who was mistreating an animal, however, when groups of people
feel passionately about animal abuse and hold radical beliefs, groups such as PETA arise and act
stronger because of group polarization than the individuals would when not associated with the
group. PETA holds beliefs that are so radical that the group is often ridiculed for their actions and
attempts. Similarly, a neighborhood may hold a meeting with interest of starting a neighborhood
watch program. Individuals may have slight concerns for their safety, but when combined together,
the group will most likely exaggerate the dangers of not having a neighborhood watch

Groan Group Observation
Through the observation, I hardly saw any progression through the Groan Zone and I assume that is
because this group has been meeting once a week for about 10 years and while they may face
misunderstanding or miscommunication they have worked though enough of it that they have a solid
foundation of shared understanding and the collective thought processes of their teammates. The
group did in fact progress through the Divergent and Convergent Zones. At some points, they
seemed to work through both zones at the same time. For example, while generating a list of ideas
they made sure to summarize the key points of their ideas. After this step they not only looked for
the conflicting issues between their ideas but they could come to agreement on which brainstormed
ideas would work and which ones were forgettable. Finally, the last point that they processed
through was exercising judgment. This process was interesting to observe. First off, it was difficult
to observe and not comment on their ideas and secondly, I could notice the sensitivity when giving
the judgment. No one wanted to sound harsh when giving their feedback. Which I found was a smart
option since they work together daily. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, I noticed the paraphrasing that was done by the facilitator. If anything, this was one of the
most used techniques. I think it was the dominate approach because she could create a new

Group Cohesion Theme

  • 1. Group Cohesion Theme Dominick Petitto Dr. Kevin Wilkerson The University of Scranton Group Consultation Activity January 20, 2016 Abstract There are many themes that surface throughout the group process. These themes hold important steps in the group process. These steps allow the group to grow together in trust, and better cohesion. Some themes that surface in the group session are anxieties/fears that occur with disclosing, conflicts that occur between members of the group, how choices affect us now, leadership of the group and how to deal with issues that arise in the group. Key Words: trust, cohesion, anxieties/fears, disclosing, conflict, choices, leadership Self–Disclosure in Groups There also seems to be a few people in group who are still having trouble sharing with the group. Conflict, in this session, even through brought up on multiple occasions throughout the session were addressed by the members of the group. The members of the group worked through this conflict by clarifying what members had said or respectfully stating their opinion, while acknowledging the other persons point of view. Choices Another theme that was present in the group was talking about choices people have made in the past and how that the choices they made were the best they could do at the time. The group talked about how the choices they have made in the past effect them today in negative way. People in the group talked about how the problems that have had causes many issues today. They talked about how there was regret for the decision that they have made in the past, which causes trouble with the way people behave in the here and now. Group Development Observation Paper Wheelan and her associates came up with a classification system referred to as Group Development Observation System (GDOS) to categorize the verbal interactions among group members. The eight Group Development Observation System categories include; Dependency statements. Those people that follow the primary mood in the group and they seek for direction from other members. Counter dependency statements. They seek independence by rebelling from the direction of the group and leadership. Fight statements. These challenge other people openly through criticism argumentativeness and aggression. Flight statements. This is an attempt to avoid working as well as demonstrating lack of commitment to the group. Pairing statements. These are referred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These groups rely on technology to communicate with one another and to accomplish the tasks allocated by the organization. One benefit of a virtual team is that they use technology and this can help increase efficiency and productivity of the members. The virtual teams also assist in the development of intellectual capital. The composition of the virtual groups helps improve quality as well as the outcome. The other benefit is the efficiency of communication. Some of the challenges include the distance between the members. The significant distance may dilute leadership, weaken human relations as well as amplify dysfunction. Virtual teams are hard to manage especially when it comes to goal setting, task distribution, coordination and member motivation. Virtual organizations rely on trust that the other members will fulfill their roles since it is not possible to monitor them closely (Hoppe, 2011). The virtual teams may face some internet challenges such as slow internet or disconnection. This problem can be handled through the use of alternative methods of communication such as mobile phones. While making a virtual team, the team members should address all challenges which may hinder communication by coming up with all possible substitutes of means of communication. These organizations rely heavily on the internet for video conferencing and sending emails. However, when the internet fails, they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Group Dynamics The continual meeting of the groups helped our overall development into a better flowing group. We each learned how to better interact with each other as the sessions went on and we became a better group in the process. One of the ways the group changes from the beginning was that we all became more comfortable sharing our thoughts and ideas with each other. In the beginning we did not know each other that well so it was hard to share ideas with each other, for fear of being judged or looked down on. But once we got to know each other and felt safe to talk about our own opinions and ideas, the group dynamic improved. The change was definitely a positive one and one that allowed us to challenge each others ideas or questions someones thought, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning it was odd and uncomfortable because we didn't know each other or what was expected of us. But after we learned what the expectations were we can feel more comfortable within the group which was a nice thing. I think as a whole the group got along pretty well and for the most part we were able to work together to attempt to solve the issue, there were little issues here and there, but that can be expected within any group. The group sessions were also a good way to learn how to work productively with people you may not like or get along with, and its a good example of how to separate what you feel about the person outside the group from what you have to get done in the ... • 7. Group 5 Legal Issues Group 5: Legal Issues Working Together for a Better Grade This project has been a very enlightening experience on how you have to sometimes let go of the control and let someone else take over. My grade will be based on a group effort instead of my own individual work and that really did leave me feeling uncomfortable especially since we were not allowed to choose who was in my group and who shouldn't be in my group. I am lucky to say that after really speaking and interacting with my group members, Luna and Lasheika, I felt a lot more secure in my grade for this project. That is not to say we did not have any problems. At first, we had some technical difficulties that resulted in Luna not being able to communicate through group text but she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems to be a hard case of senioritis and it seems to be highly contagious. To be frank, it was quite challenging just to get myself started on this project. In the end, I did manage to muster up some drive to complete this project to the best of my ability. I learned a lot about legal issues because I did find that the best way to learn something is knowing that you have to teach it to a group of peers. It is part of the incentive that motivated me to finish this project. I feel very excited to be almost finished with school and after completing this project I feel as though everything else is going to be downhill from here on out. So, even though I could not wait for the end of this experience. This was a very good learning opportunity for me. I learned a long time ago that you have to know how to play well with others but this project drove the point home to me and provided me with a new friend in the long ... Our organization is called Shield for Children. We worked as a team and finished this presentation together. We had a lot of troubles at the beginning. For example, we have different opinions on the meeting time since we both had our own busy schedule. As a result, we couldn't group together and discussed about the presentation. Then, I had to personally give out instructions so that volunteers were well informed on what their duties were on the day of the event. In addition, I made some volunteers executive producers so that on the day of the event, there were people to relay information to camera crew throughout the event. Next, I had to plan the layout at which we could film the performance while not blocking the vision of guests. After re–adjusting the seating arrangement and my layout, I finally found a way to spread out seven people filming among the crowd. • 13. Group Work Protocols PART D: Group Work Protocols 1. Group formation and management – When deciding on how to organise groups the composition is often made with classroom management, student ability or classroom space in mind (Baines et al., 2008). However, it is important to plan where students are going to sit, who is going to be in each group, and what role or responsibility each student will have in the group. For example, a teacher could delegate responsibility to specific students from each group give out the paper, distribute equipment or collect the work at the end for the session. Teachers could encourage students to rely on other in the group rather than ask questions of the teacher (Cowley, 2006) and by doing so, students can learn to be more self–reliant ... • 15. Group Reflection : Group Process Group Reflection Group My concept of what a group consist of is a story that needs to be told and heard from many people with similar issues or problems. The group is a tool to help each member to gain some insight on how they can change or make a difference in their lives for the future. I feel that a group is a place where new relationships can develop and to find self again. Group Process The group process is facilitated by a counselor by the process has to be done by the members. It can be easy or hard depending on the individual and how much they want to disclose about themselves. The process is measureable and goals are set to help guide the members to stay focus on what they need to work on. Therefore, there five stages to help guide the facilitator and the members. They are forming, storming, norming performing and adjourning. First they must understand how to achieve their primary task, the purpose they joined the group ( ). Next the members are identifying who is going to be on top or bottom. Meaning who is going to be the control hierarchy and who is going to be the quiet one. Each member attempts to establish his or her preferred amount of initiative and power ( ). The third phase a group is the development of mature group cohesiveness ( ). They are starting to build trust, increase morale and self–disclosure. Fourth, the group members are working the group and changes are occurring depending on the individual. • 17. Group Counseling : A Group Introduction This paper is a brief reflection of what this writer has learned throughout this group– counseling course. Topics discuss significant things this writer has learned about group counseling, about herself as a group leader, skills and experiences to develop, current strengths and weakness in leading group and types of groups this writer is interested in leading. Group Counseling The most significant thing this writer has learned about group counseling in this course is that the process is the groups'. When the process is the groups', as sessions progress, the facilitator will not need to be as involved, as the group members will carry the group. This knowledge is something this writer was aware of, but did not fully understand and this writer now feels that she has a good understanding of this. Being a Group Leader Even though this writer has been facilitating groups for the past three years, this writer has gained much knowledge throughout this course about herself as a group leader. Something that this writer learned about herself is her want for the group to be "successful". Though this writer is aware that a group members progress and/or success depends on the member and not the group facilitator, this writer has in the past felt discouraged when a youth had disclosed that they had not gained something from group. This course has strengthened this writers knowledge that it is the group members responsibility to be successful in the group process and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Leadership And The Life Cycle Of A Group . A Group Is A Leadership and the Life Cycle of a Group A group is a living thing, developing over time and adapting to the environment and expectations imposed upon it as it grows. When observed carefully, a pattern of distinct phases emerge in this growth process. It is important to recognize and take advantage of these various stages of development in order to maximize group effectiveness and efficiency. There are several different models for small group development, but Tuckman 's model is "probably the most famous sequential–stage theory" (Johnson & Johnson, 2016, p.27). This paper will discuss the five stages of group development according to Tuckman 's model as well as some practical leadership guidelines that will help a group remain effective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of great value at this stage is encouragement and patience. The reason for the conflict is generally insecurity (Bonebright, 2010, p. 114), so providing a strong support system an reassurance can help move a group to the next phase. As members of the group begin to feel safe and secure, the conflict will settle and the group will develop a bond and unified goals. Labeled a period of norming, it is "characterized by close relationships and cohesiveness" (Group Development, 2003). In fact, this stage is so characterized by relationship that it could almost be viewed as a honeymoon phase. Group members will frequently set aside differences and unity becomes a priority. It is important at this stage to emphasize honesty and creativity because the group will likely be trying so hard to be amenable that some members may hold back. Others will be ready to open up given their newfound sense of security within the group. This is also a critical time for the group because it typically delineates a time to commit (Johnson & Johnson, 2016). If a group reaches this stage and not all members are on board, it may hinder progress. Once a group has developed cohesiveness, it will truly begin to produce. This phase of effectiveness is titled performing according to Tuckman 's model. At this stage, the group is a "problem–solving instrument", capable of working through obstacles and accomplishing goals (Bonebright, 2010, p. 114). Is it not uncommon for groups ... • 21. Group Reflection Paper Reflection Paper In this class I have been able to experience group projects in a different manner than before. I have always struggled with social anxiety and group experiences have always been hard for me. If it was not for the help of many wonderful people, I do not think I would have been able to take this class. This group experience has been one I always will remember, because it was the first experience where I felt comfortable. In my group we used inclusivity, empowering, and process–orientation to help accomplish our goals. Inclusivity is a big aspect of group work. Without it no one would feel a part of the team and not want to do any work. Our group banded together because of our seating proximities. However, we chose to stay in the group because we got along so well. One of our group members slowly worked his way into our group and we unknowingly included him in. For the final project we were all excited to start working on together and collectively decided to do the best work we are capable of. We made sure everybody expressed their idea and gave their pitch on the video. While we filmed the video, everybody gave their view on how each scene should be filmed. • 23. Group Immigration Project What have you gained/learned from this process thus far? The needs assessment report has been a great learning experience since the first day of the assignment due to the group setting of the project and the immigration learning topic. From the process, so far I have gained team work collaboration through technology as none of the team members live near each other. I have learned how to communicate electronically and we have found the perfect method for everyone to be able to participate. In regards to our group immigration topic, through the research done for the proposal I have learned the many ways the community offers language assistance for all ages. The community aids all immigrants no matter their primary language, and the assistance is easily obtainable. For youth, the school districts offer testing level classes for all immigrant children to be able to catch up and be in the grade level they are tested into. In addition, we had to find the proper way to communicate that would be great for all team members, after email discussion, found a group chat website that we could all sign in to and save our conversations to keep track of what we agreed on. Another group challenge we experienced was putting the first proposal together as we all have different methods of writing and explaining our topic. We each wrote a part of the paper and combined the input from each team member to created our final proposal. As what I have learnt from the group presentation in Introduction of Management course, a high relationship and the enthusiastic members would create the best performance. Our team is a diversity team because we all have the difference in backgrounds and cultures. Chloe and I come from the same country, which is Vietnam and we are international students. Our group did not establish any rules or protocols for behaviours because I wanted the members do not feel any pressure. Personally, I think a comfortable spirit creates a better result than anything else. Luckily, each member in the team did quite well for their parts, so we did not have any arguments. I think that each of us had a different role in contributing to the team successful. Hosna and Genesis with their meticulous characteristics, they actually helped us to fix every little mistakes in our parts. Chloe always created the group meeting as well as booked the room for us to practice. He discusses in chapter six that he would begin this process in the first group session, after all members discuss their reason for joining the group. He would highlight that all members have likely made impressions of each other, and then invites them to talk about what they came up with. In the group video, this intervention stirred a conversation that provided the opportunity for members to enact their styles of relating to others with members of the group, Alice became quiet, Alan rescued her, etc. I think the process became evident as the first comment made was that Alice was quiet. In addition, it seems that Yalom believes that by being authentic the therapist can decentralize her role, and can "foster a deeper exploration on the client's part" (p. 218). Meanwhile mixed results have been reported regarding self–disclosure (Audet, 2011), I find Yalom's argument compelling as he asserts the following: "I am advocating that therapists relate authentically to clients in the here–and–now of the therapy hour, not that they reveal their past and present in a detailed manner" (p. 223). He goes on to explain that he doesn't believe it is helpful when therapists talk about ways they have overcome personal challenges, indicating appropriate boundaries when it comes to transparency, and clients' wellbeing in mind. I agree that certain forms of self–disclosure can pose ethical concerns, as Epstein (1994) indicates; however, some clients will benefit from the therapist's disclosure (Audet & Everall, 2003), and their curiosity does not come from intentionally breaking boundaries, and a therapist's rigid standpoint could hinder the relationship. I have seen therapists have a strong reaction when clients asked a personal question, however, I believe that it makes sense that some clients would need to feel connected by knowing something about the therapist for their comfort level to ... The group was organized into five topics about Youtube to create a whole project. The project was split into the business, history, blogging, music, and sports of Youtube. My group made thorough decisions, was engaging, had little to no conflicts, and got our point across. I give my group members a high evaluation and enjoyed discovering new topics, learning how to function within a small group, and realizing how to apply communication techniques into real life situations. My group was true to their opinions, work, and expectation of peers. Ethical communication was exhibited in my small group. This means my group was focused on getting our work done while still maintain reasonable relationships among group members. The time increases when comparing Group A to Group B, but not Group B to Group C. The same also applies to Group C to Group D and then a decrease from Group D to Group E. Figure 1 shows a clearer picture of the RT when compared to all of the reaction time. Even though the time decreases in some areas, there is clear increase or RT when looking from the youngest to olderst. When looking at the graph, there is statistical significance in some of the areas and not in others. All data was calculated at a 95% confidence level. The difference from Group A to Group B is only 0.2538 seconds, but when the data is compared to each other, the probability (P–Value) is 0.000287. This is a significant difference between the two. From Group B to Group C, there is a 0.01 second decrease in time, which has a P– Value of 0.4698. This is not a statistical difference and leaves room for this time to not be a normal outcome. Group C and Group D has a 0.2289 seconds increase, but when calculated with the raw data, there is no significant difference with a P–Value of 0.0833. Each person in a group has his or her own ideas about everything. The biggest thing that was emphasized was the group working together to come up with a set of rules that governs that group. When a team collectively comes up with its own rules and regulation there is less likely of a chance for conflict. If there is conflict the group potentially will be able to resolve it on its own. A method that is used is the nominal method of decision making. This means that each member comes to the meeting with his or her own set of rules and guidelines for the group. Each person reads the set of rules aloud, then as a group they vote on the top ten rules. Those top ten then are adopted by the group. It is important to periodically evaluate the rules, especially when and if the group back slides. This will help the group regain structure and focus on the task. I do not think that this approach will fit every group setting. I think that the process of setting ruled and guidelines for a group can be a lengthy process whether you do a pre–questionnaire or not. It is important that leaders make choices that "protects the organization and others from undue distraction to the mission" (Dees, 2013, p. 44). Integrity "Integrity is simply telling the truth or staying true to a set of values" (Dees, 2013, p80). Integrity is essential in the effectiveness of a leader. Interorganizational refers to processes that exist between organization and other organizations in their environment (Wells, 1995). Kristine tested the boundaries by addressing her feeling towards a member in Group B after the group processed. As a result, both group members felt the system (the entire class) dynamic and setting was unsafe and loose. The mixed feelings of anger and hurt influenced the dynamics of the system for a few weeks. The group as a whole increased their personal boundaries to avoid being attacked or hurt. Group A has enter the storming phase with Group B. Storming is the conflict, polarization and resistance to the group influence and task (Tuckman, 1965). Storming should occur within the group and not between two separate groups. The group rigid personal boundaries around their roles prohibited the group from entering the storming stage with in the group. But in our group each individual had a specific task that they had to perform to make sure the group assignment got done. The group consisted of 9 people who are as followed; Christian Clark, Reilyenne Nahulu, Michel Rivera, Hunter Salavea–Timoteo, Kashalynn Vergara, Paola Guadalupe Gonzalez, Kobee Ledward, Bryje Ahia, and Jeremie Saludares. The analysis covers the importance of an interesting topic, preparation needed, roles I played, things that went well in our group, could've done better, and the two important things about group communication. Our group chose 'Ulu Maika an interesting topic. An interesting topic is important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I learned two important things about group communication. Sitting in a circle makes talking easier for everyone because then you will have clear eye view of who is talking. This helping eliminate any miscommunication with not knowing who said what and being able to be heard a lot easier with the open space. The book states "An essential task of the meeting facilitator is to orchestrate meaningful interaction during the meeting so that all group members have the opportunity to share". Having a circle makes it a lot easier for everyone to be heard by going in a order and taking turns with who will be talking next making sure not to skip anybody so everyone will be heard. Working in groups takes much coordination so that everybody will continue to work effectively. The book states "To contact members when questions or issues arise even if you're not in a scheduled meeting". This being a major part of group communication being able to adjust your time to help out somebody who has a question or concern. The group Imessage really helped at times like this to help coordinate with who would be answering the question based off what the question regarded but still including everybody in the conversation so nobody will be left out and everybody would still be updated with everything that's going ... • 67. Powerpoint: Group Analysis Usually I would not want to be a part of a group for an essay project simply because I wouldn't want to put my grade in jeopardy, however, my recent experience has made me rethink my initial opinion. Being able to work in a group has taught me a lot and it will help me in my future by allowing me to work well with others and put a greater importance on making my communication skills better, get work done in a timely manner, plan and compromise, as well as collaborative work. To start off the beginning stages in preparing the group research PowerPoint we were placed into random groups, this helped me by not giving me the opportunity to just try and pick my friends to do the project. I got to work with classmates I wouldn't usually associate with, taking me out of my comfort zone and opening my mind to new ideas, and friendships. As a group we then selected a topic we all wanted to do a presentation on which was "should school officials be allowed to search student's lockers?" It was a very controversial and excellent topic to do both research and present. As a group we organized our presentation by splitting the PowerPoint into four sections, the first being background information, the second was stating the problem, third was the refutation, and last being a call ... Being able to work with a group to arrange a presentation taught me to work on my communication skills, which came to use when we needed to turn in our part of the project to put the presentation together. At the beginning of the project everyone in the group was doing their own thing which soon to realize was not a good idea due to the fact that it wasn't helping the presentation flow. After getting into contact with everyone and actually planning out what we were going to focus on, the presentation came ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Group Process And Dynamics Analysis During this past week in class, I was able to learn more about Group Process and Dynamics. In this reflection, I will talk about the "Building a House" activity and what I learned about diversity issues from this exercise. I will also give details on my observations linking them to behaviors listed in our class Observation Grid paper. On Monday, we partook in the group activity "Building a House". Our instructions were to as a group build a house made out of Legos. Before the activity we were each given a piece of paper with individual assignments written on them. We were told that we could not share details about our assignments with the other group members. We were split into two groups of three, Nataliya and Ms. Nadia we selected to be observers during this exercise and were place on opposite sides of the room. In my group it was Jorge, Farrah and myself and in the other group it was Zana, Devon and Beatrice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since we couldn't communicate verbally I noticed that most of the communication during the exercise consisted of visual cues such as body language. Gestures like hand signals, body signals and eye movement were utilized by all group members. I noticed nearly every group member nod and shake their heads many times to indicate agreements and disagreements. This reminded me of the importance of being able to identify nonverbal communication through body language. "People say a lot by the body language and posture (are they leaning in, slouched over and tired, agitated with their arms crossed, etc.); their behavior movements (nervous twitched, tapping of the foot, wringing of their hands, etc.); and the direction of their gaze and attention." • 71. Group Project Reflection Throughout my years in graduate school, I found myself with many opportunities to work on group projects. I always found these projects to be a rewarding experience because it was not only an opportunity to contribute my experience and ideas to the project but also listen to experience and ideas of my teammates. However, working on a group project also meant making sure to examine the work of my teammates and vice–versa. So for each group assignment, I always made sure to follow certain guidelines I laid out for myself in order to get the assignment completed. 1. Ask questions – especially if I needed a teammate to clarify what they needed from me or if I not sure about what they wrote. 2. Provide thoughtful suggestions on the work of my ... • 73. Group Polarization: Helpful Or Harmful? Group Cohesiveness Group cohesiveness is often strived for and encouraged, however, after this chapter it is clear just how damaging cohesiveness can be to a group. While it can be much more pleasant to work with people similar to yourself, highly cohesive groups often miss the benefits of disagreement and diverse opinions. Often cohesiveness is so strongly supported and encouraged that there may be punishments from varying away from group norms. If members fear punishment or judgement from speaking against the group, biased sampling is more likely to occur. This can result in making poor decisions and not actively using the skills each member holds. Group polarization is also much more likely to affect a highly cohesive group in comparison to a relatively diverse group. Group polarization can be avoided or limited by members who hold opposing views to the majority, which cannot be supported by a highly cohesive group. Group Polarization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If everyone in the group shares the same beliefs and each feels pressured to conform and fit in, the group will exaggerate the situation to an extent in which they will feel that their belief is the only acceptable belief. For example, most people feel that animal abuse is wrong, and many people would stand up against someone who was mistreating an animal, however, when groups of people feel passionately about animal abuse and hold radical beliefs, groups such as PETA arise and act stronger because of group polarization than the individuals would when not associated with the group. PETA holds beliefs that are so radical that the group is often ridiculed for their actions and attempts. Similarly, a neighborhood may hold a meeting with interest of starting a neighborhood watch program. Individuals may have slight concerns for their safety, but when combined together, the group will most likely exaggerate the dangers of not having a neighborhood watch ... • 75. In-Group Negotiation Paper I have only had three different jobs in my life, two of them where only three people worked at an office. At my other job where we were a bigger group, I was able to see more of in–groups and out– groups. I started as a volunteer evaluation research assistant at a physical activity in San Diego, and after six months I was hired by this same program. According to Northouse (2016) "Followers who are interested in negotiating with the leader what they are willing to do for the group can become a part of the in–group. These negotiations involve exchanges in which followers do certain activities that go beyond their formal job descriptions, and the leader, in turn, does more for those followers" (pg. 138), I believe I became part of the in–group ... • 77. Groan Group Observation Through the observation, I hardly saw any progression through the Groan Zone and I assume that is because this group has been meeting once a week for about 10 years and while they may face misunderstanding or miscommunication they have worked though enough of it that they have a solid foundation of shared understanding and the collective thought processes of their teammates. The group did in fact progress through the Divergent and Convergent Zones. At some points, they seemed to work through both zones at the same time. For example, while generating a list of ideas they made sure to summarize the key points of their ideas. After this step they not only looked for the conflicting issues between their ideas but they could come to agreement on which brainstormed ideas would work and which ones were forgettable. Finally, the last point that they processed through was exercising judgment. This process was interesting to observe. First off, it was difficult to observe and not comment on their ideas and secondly, I could notice the sensitivity when giving the judgment. No one wanted to sound harsh when giving their feedback. Which I found was a smart option since they work together daily. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, I noticed the paraphrasing that was done by the facilitator. If anything, this was one of the most used techniques. I think it was the dominate approach because she could create a new conversation through paraphrasing and it stopped her from giving her input, while also giving her clarification on an idea she might have been questionable about. Secondly, I noticed the facilitator using the drawing out method. She realized my director was being silent and she managed to draw her out and add her into the discussion ...
