Royal Chinook Salmon
With the influx of human population immigrating to Pacific Northwest Region of the United States at
the end of the 19th century, extracting the natural goods of the environment quickly became an issue
of sustainability and preservation. In the State of Washington Ninth Annual Report of the State Fish
Commissioner of 1898, author A.C. Little illustrates how the extractive actions along many of
Washington s river systems are resulting in a major depletion of salmon species unique to the
Northwest. Little s Report aimed to bring attention to over consumption of this finite resource that was
not only intrinsically valuable to many people within the region but was also a very successful
economic engine too value to deplete. The booming fishing industry, ... Show more content on

Little s Ninth Annual Report of the State Fish Commissioner of 1898, may not have immediately
propagated change in the region toward salmon fish restoration, but the argument laid out in the report
provides that the recommendations provided were only to benefit all parties. From the transnational
fishing industry, to the individual livelihood of the local fishermen, along with the improvement
salmon spawning population, finally paired with ultimate sustainable harvest practices, would piece
together to support and improve all entities of the Pacific Northwest s salmon fishing economic
engine. Little s report sought took into account the diversity reaction that his recommendations may
propagated, and worked to pair all parties to illustrate that the ultimate outcome was to support a
society at the brink of developing into a major economic center of the western United States. At the
end of the 19th century sustainable salmon practice held a significant share in the progress of
Washington State, Little only sought to prove that salmon restoration and sustainable practices could
provide a prosperous future for the

Self Reflection
Coming into a college writing course, I did not expect it to be easy. Throughout high school essays
were very easy to write due to teachers cutting way too much slack and handing out easy grades.
Writing has always been difficult for me, but I feel this is because I have not been challenged yet to
demonstrate my full writing ability. I had yet to develop my own voice as a writer. Throughout this
course, I was met with many challenges to bring out the true writer inside of me and because of this, I
was ultimately able to grow as a writer. The essays that I have written throughout the WRC 1013
course demonstrate that I have developed better annotation skills, communication skills and personal
responsibility skills; however, I still need to improve in proofreading and learning how to receive
more revisions from my peers.
After going through my essays, one self reflection throughout my papers I was able to gather was my
growth in developing good annotation throughout my chosen sources. For example, in my first paper
Behind the Screen VS. The Real World , my annotation and gathering information from sources was
very poor. This is shown in the essay where I completely stated the opposite of what Rita Dove was
trying to say in her piece Loose Ends . I state that, As you can see, this is one of many reasons as to
how so much screen time can have a negative influence on people which is what Rita Dove is
implying in her article ( Behind the Screen Vs. The Real World 2). This

Monsanto And Bayer
As with any business, the typical stakeholder groups for the Monsanto Company include board of
directors, employees, supply chain members, consumers, management, regulatory bodies,
environmentalists, and the agricultural community (Ferrell, Fraedrich, Ferrell, 2015). On a more
modern note, Monsanto and Bayer have been attempting to buy out or merge as a company during
2016 to 2018 and it appears that Bayer will be the purchasing agent and Monsanto will be a subsidiary
of Bayer (Varela, 2016). With Bayer being a German based chemical and pharmaceutical company
and Monsanto a U.S. based biotech seed research and development operation, the companies will
merge under a $66 billion deal and would redirect the focus of Bayer and expanding into

What Is The Role Of Julius Caesar And Augustus
Gaius and Lucius Julius Caesar were adopted by Augustus in 17 BC. They were under the care of
Agrippa if he should die. Augustus and Agrippa had their powers renewed and became involved in
Gaul and the northern frontiers of Italy. Agrippa will turn his attention to the eastern provinces. In 13
BC, Tiberius received his first consulship, which was an important step for him in the political and
social ladder. Agrippa started to return from the east, however he fell ill and died. This was a crushing
blow for Augustus to lose his lifelong friend. This was probably the only man in his circle he could
truly trust. He had helped Augustus in both the political and military world of Rome. Agrippa was a
humble man and seems to be content with the role he was given. There was a grandiose funeral from
him and was even buried in Augustus mausoleum.
Lepidus who was the pontifex maximus, which is the head of the priests, passed away the title was
given over to Augustus. In 11 BC, Tiberius married Julia supporting the bloodline and relation to
Augustus. He then turned his attention to the campaigns against the Dalmatians and Pannonians.
Augustus once again took the consulship but for his own interest and pursuit. He lead Gaius into the
Forum, where the Senate voted that in five years he was to be consul. Augustus did the same ritual for
Lucius while holding his 13th consulship. He took great care to have them prepared to succeed him.
However, Lucius died in 2 AD and his brother later in 4

Vaccination Of Children And Children
Vaccinations in Children Is it fair to not vaccinate children because we don t want to? Because they do
not need to and they will not get sick? No. It is not fair to not vaccinate children because they won t
get sick. By not vaccinating children you are doing others harm. Every child has a different immune
system and reacts to illnesses differently. Imagine having a child with disabilities and having them
around children that have not been vaccinated. With the poor immune system autistic kids have they
would be catching every disease possible. Autism is a condition typified by abnormal qualitative
development of social interactions, communication and imagination, with restricted and repetitive
interests and activities (Edward Purssell RGN, RSCN, PhD of the University of London). What causes
autism? Many parents like to say that the vaccination MMR has caused their child to have autism later
in life. Purssell and other authors and doctors have done countless research to find out the truth about
MMR and their being a link between the vaccine MMR and autism. On February 28, 1998, Andrew
Wakefield, a gastroenterologist did a paper about eight children whose first symptoms appeared after a
month after they had received the MMR vaccine. All of those children had signs of gastrointestinal
disease. From what Wakefield observed, the MMR vaccine caused intestinal inflammation, that lead to
the blood stream and eventually to the brain where it affected development. Backing this up,

Eating Disorders Among Female Athletes
Eating Disorders Among Collegiate Female Student Athletes
Eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa, bulimia) are not rare in today s society. They have become
increasingly common among young women. Research indicates that there is a link between the media
s representation of the perfect body as well as ideals of attractiveness with dissatisfaction of body
image and eating disorders (Ferguson, Munoz, Garza, Galindo, 2013). In this current literature review,
I will focus on the impact of eating disorders among female collegiate student athletes with an
emphasis on how sports can play an influential role in the development of eating disorders. Female
collegiate student athletes are at risk of developing eating disorders not only because of societal
pressures on women to be thin, but also due to sport specific pressures to change their body weight,
size or shape. Factors that contribute to sport culture and pressure on female athletes include
performance anxiety, revealing uniforms, and coaches influences on their athletes (Coker Cranney
Reel, 2015). Sports can be a way to pursue a passion and promote health, but unfortunately the
pressures that coincide with sports often become extreme. The pressure to be the best can cause
student athletes to resort to harmful measures such as playing through injuries due to fear of losing a
starting position on their team. Similarly, athletes are more likely to fall into disordered eating habits
because they believe it might help

The Thucydides Trap Summary
Mr. Allison first coined the phrase The Thucydides Trap, a trap where a rising power will inevitably
challenge the ruling power that could most likely end in war. The Thucydides Trap is occurring in the
21st century between the US, the ruling power, and China, the rising power, who are getting
increasingly more powerful on the international stage. War is most likely possible between the two
powers, but past history shows that the US and China can get out of the trap through peaceful means.
The first evidence that the author uses to support his thesis is previous examples of the ruling power
being challenged by the rising power. The first example that author uses is the rivalry between Athens
and Sparta, which ended with the Peloponnesian war and with Sparta the victor. The war happened
because Sparta and Athens had entangling alliances with other city states who went to war with each
other and called the superpowers into the war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though previously they were on friendly terms, the UK felt threatened by Germany goal of
having a powerful navy and sought allies in Europe to counteract Germany. The entangling alliances
that UK and Germany made brought the whole world into WW1, which ended as the UK and its allies
as the victors. Although 12 out of 16 examples of the Thucydides Trap ended in war, the chart in the
article shows that it is possible to get out through peaceful means.
The second evidence to support his thesis is that the Chinese economy will overtake the US economy.
The Chinese economy is rising significantly, its economy in 1980 was smaller than the Netherlands,
while in 2014 the Chinese increment of growth of its GDP is equal to the entire Dutch economy. As
shown in the GDP chart in the article, the Chinese GDP is growing significantly compared to the rest
of the world and didn t even stopped during the 2008 financial crisis and the Great

Using Logos, Ethos And Pathos In Arguments
During the course of GET1021, I have learnt many critical thinking and writing skills such as
identifying assumptions, distinguishing between deductive and inductive reasoning, evaluating the
reliability of evidence or authorities, identifying flaws in reasoning and using logos, pathos and ethos
in arguments. These skills helped me with my assignments.
I could identify the author s main claim and key arguments quickly. Furthermore, by breaking down
the key arguments into components, I could understand them better. These made it easier for me to
describe and express the author s ideas in my own words for the summary writing. Additionally, I
could distinguish the form and substantiate the validity and soundness or cogency and strength of the
author s argument. I could identify underlying assumptions, fallacies and attempts to appeal to ethos,
pathos, and/or logos in the author s argument as well. I also paid greater attention to the language and
looked out for any statistical evidence and counterargument that the author uses to support his
argument when doing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

analyse the causes of the problem and propose possible solutions, especially after engaging in group
discussions where we shared what we have learnt. Although we were confused with the problem
indicators and causes initially, we managed to identify and substantiate them properly after receiving
feedback from the other groups and learning from them. Moreover, by learning how to establish links

Creating Variables Into A Created Scene Essay
1.0 Introduction. This report discusses the task of creating variables into a created scene in the
aforementioned Alice program. As previously mentioned, particular attention to good Human
Computer Interaction and usability was sustained throughout this period of development. Taking
usability into great measure; enabling the user to engage and interact with the animation and foremost
to ensure repetitive usage of the program for their enjoyment occurred. This report documents the
planning and construction of the variable methods, the chosen character in my animation uses in this
particular programme, through to completion. During the completion process, to increase usability I
critically analysed my programme, debugged it and solved any problems it had. On completion I
decided to allow one of my peers to use and give an individual report on said animation, this is
truthful to my knowledge. 2.0Method Whilst creating a new area in programming to my project,
keeping the user in mind, I decided to keep to keep the scene and the characters moderately the same;

that this particular character would be the only animated character in this particular scene; this being
adultPerson4. This enables the user to notwithstanding have the familiar comforting and inviting
elements of their previous visit, moreover, to accommodate familiarity, clarity and good usability. The

Proserpina and the Pomegranate Seeds
Some time ago, magnificent goddess, Ceres, gave birth to a beautiful girl named Proserpina. One
morning, Ceres was instructed to leave. Being the goddess of agriculture, she was often busy helping
crops grow and prosper. Ceres promptly informed Proserpina that she would be leaving for a short
while, reminding her never to wander in the fields alone, and to stay with the sea nymphs because they
will always protect her. Regardless of her mother s warning, Proserpina was curious and adventurous.
Her mother instructing her to stay away from the fields only heightened her want to explore. Shortly

Glasshouse fragrance is a brand founded in 2006. The main business of the brand is selling the

The Monsters in the Epic of Beowulf Essay
The poem Beowulf, believed to be written between 650 and 800 by a group of monks, contains several
complex characters that have sparked discussions throughout the years. Scholars still continue to
ponder over the unanswered questions about characters, such as whether Grendel is monster or
human, whether Grendel is evil or not, and what the monsters in Beowulf signify. Other important,
though less accepted questions include whether Beowulf is really a hero, or is in actuality a monster,
and what allows the characters to be classified as either evil, or not evil. Because both sides of these
arguments can be sufficiently supported with textual evidence, it is the reader s responsibility to
defend an appropriate answer. There are no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is enough textual evidence provided in the poem of Beowulf for the reader to assume that
Grendel is a monster, which few critics argue. As a means of backing this up, the reader can point out
direct statements in the poem, for example, several times Grendel is called ... a fiend out of hell, who
is trying to ... work his evil in the world (Beowulf 9), and a ... God cursed brute... (Beowulf 49). One
can also utilize the direct descriptions of Grendel, for he is described as being strong enough to ... grab
thirty men from their resting places and rush to his lair... (Beowulf 11), which is hardly humanlike.
Along with these direct statements that Grendel is a monster, there are several facts that are not
directly stated, however, they are essential to Grendel s classification.
There are several indirect statements in the poem that help to classify Grendel as a monster. For
example, there is much depravation in Grendel s life that separates him from the other human beings
of that time period. Such as the fact that Grendel is a loner, banished from society, which shows that
Grendel has no human communications, which is doubtlessly not a humanlike characteristic. Grendel
also has no father, but instead has only a mother, which is bizarre because many of the other characters
introduce themselves as son of ____ , and indeed, despite the fact that Beowulf s father is dead, he is
often referred to as, ...

Analysis Of We Need To Talk About Kevin
I agree with this statement because subtle conflict creates rising tension which helps to create the
drama of a text. We Need to Talk about Kevin (2011), directed by Lynne Ramsay, is a film set in New
York from 1900 s 2001 about a woman, Eva Katchadourian, who encounters her past life elliptically
leading up to her sons massacre. Through the themes of guilt, motherhood and nature versus nurture,
we are able to truly experience the drama of the film through techniques such as cinematography,
colour palette and dialogue. The drama of We Need to Talk about Kevin is developed throughout the
film in many scenes that create rising tension leading up to the climactic point. In the scene where Eva
is in a prenatal class, a wide shot helps us to recognise that she is very melancholic and withdrawn
from the other pregnant women surrounding her. The close up shots of the surrounding women s
babies while Eva still has her shirt on is interpreted as Eva coming to terms with her loss of
independence and freedom. This scene creates an effect of misery and loathing through the lighting
technique. It is very dark and not very colourful or full of life like it should be. This scene was
explored by viewers to see that Eva was miserable without her independence ad that in fact she did not
want to become a mother. It also helps viewers to understand that motherhood isn t for everybody but
societal pressure makes women think that we have to have babies or we are not giving back to the

Forrest Thomson Poetic Artifice Analysis
Two Co Option Co option is I argue most clearly defined by Veronica Forrest Thomson s Poetic
Artifice. A text, that pushed back against critics of the previous generation and endeavoured early on
to integrate structuralist thought with post structuralist. This integration between structuralism and
post structuralism can be seen as an attempt to get at the importance of poetry. In an attempt to stress
and illuminate poetry s unique ability to be transformative of both language and the world. Forrest
Thomson in Poetic Artifice demands an intense focus on all the rhythmic, phonetic, verbal and logical
devices which makes poetry different from prose to best consider this transformative nature. It is in
this distinguishing of poetry from prose, and the highly formalist manner and structuralist distrust of
language s transparency in which she follows that one can also see a similar differencing between the
broader spectrum of literature with the sciences. There is no need in Forrest Thomson s work for
differing areas to be inclusive of one another, to the point of loss of individuality, because of a
homogenizing of methodology and epistemic reasoning. Throughout both Poetic Artifice and her
thesis Poetry as Knowledge: The Use of Science by Twentieth Century Poets, Forest Thomson can be
seen to put forward a new structure, in which separation is crucial for any kind of interrelation
between the two fields of knowledge. She follows a similar stance as that of Kelly

Back To The Future Structure
Back to the Future is regarded as one of the most classic movies from the 80s. Though up until this
class I had never seen it. The movie recounts the story of Marty McFly as he tries to get back from the
past after the scientist Doc Brown accidentally sends him back. Furthermore, Marty must also have his
parents fall in love after mistakenly changing the course of time. The film can be viewed as a simple
coming of age story from the 80 s with a unique structure when it comes to time, but when examined
more closely gives a clear example of how the narrative structure works. Narrative structure is how
the narrative or story is shown to the audience in its 3 acts. The narrative structure molds the viewing

Medea Nemesis
Medea is a dramatic presentation of a daring and smart, manipulative and cunning woman who
performs acts of wrath, with a twist. Euripides confers on his Medea impunity in this alternative,
unconventional rendition of the story. This approach immediately limits the ability of the performance
to rationally explain the workings of the world through the cycle of nemesis, but there are some
noteworthy scenes and implied lessons in Euripides Medea that make the experience, on a whole,
worthwhile.
I appreciate that Euripides Medea implicitly banks on the engine of nemesis to explain the rise and fall
of Jason s and Medea s lot respectively, for it offers the audience a rational explanation of the
pervasive instability of the world, to the extent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By comparison, the lack of wise advisers to warn Jason against hubris is again significant. The play
gives no foreshadowing to Jason s hubris of taking the Princess of Corinth as his wife, proceeding
straight to highlight the extremity of the transgression as Medea expressively cries out upon Themis,
goddess of prayers, and Zeus, acknowledged the protector of oaths among mortals (Euripides, 168
170). Medea authoritatively says that in Jason s act of hubris of firstly, breaking his original marriage
oath and secondly, treating his current wife (Medea) with cruelty to her face, he acts against the gods,
her and the whole human race (Euripides, 468 471). Her authority stems from the widely
acknowledged importance and immutability of the oaths, since, as Medea rightfully highlights, the
gods Jason swore by during his marriage to Medea probably continue to rule and men in society
continue to live by the same standards of what is right (Euripides, 493 6). Medea s conviction of Jason
s act of transgression in defiance of laws and Gods that protect the sanctity of the marriage paves the
way for tisis. As the Nurse chants, Certainly it will be by no trivial action that my mistress will lay her
anger to rest (Euripides, 171 2), the audience is gripped by a feverish sense of foreboding. All eyes

Causes Of Cuban In The Spanish American War
Cuba in the Spanish American War The Spanish American war consisted of a series of influential
battles that pitted America and many of Spain s colonies against Spanish rule, and ended with Spain
losing its colonies and America gaining control over more and more land. In 1898, America joined a
war being pit against Spain to force the Spanish to relinquish all control of their colonies, including
Guam, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. This same war ended only a few months later, with Spain suffering
huge losses and America gaining money and territories. The Spanish American war could be split into
three main points of interest: How and why the Spanish American war started, The battles of Manila,
Santiago de Cuba, Asomante, and Las Guasimas ( And the Rough Riders) , and the aftermath of the
war. One of the most interesting territories was Cuba. Although the Spanish american war was not a
long and costly war, it changed many people s lives indefinitely. There were a plethora of important
events that took place that prompted the beginning of The Spanish American war. The war was
officially started in 1898, bringing joy to the citizens of America and dismay to then president William
Mckinley. Before the war, Cuba had been fighting for independence from Spain. The Cuban s had
already lost in the ten year war earlier, which had been fought to gain their independence from Spain.

Henry David Thoreau s Letter From The Birmingham Jail
In Henry David Thoreau s Resistance to Civil Government he wrote a letter which became an
academic lecture. This lecture was about his objection to paying the poll tax because of the
government s involvement in slavery and the Mexican war. For refusing to pay the poll tax, he had to
spend a night in jail. Martin Luther King wrote A Letter from the Birmingham Jail when he spent
eleven days there charged with demonstrating without a permit. He wrote his open letter in response to
criticism from clergy who criticized his protest methods. The two letters are the same because they are
both written in support of civil disobedience when it comes to bad actions by the state. Differences in
the letters concern their call to action, and the tone of urgency. Both Thoreau and King believed that
individuals should follow their conscience when they believe the state does unethical acts. Thoreau
protested the Mexican War and Slavery in the United States. King protested Jim Crow laws in the
south that were part of segregation and discrimination against blacks. Similarly, both men also spent ...

Michelle Obama Food Fail Essay
Michelle Obama s Food Fail Michelle Obama is pushing her way for a healthier nation, taking down
any obstacles she might encounter. The big question is; Is her plan going to backfire? This anti obesity
campaign has caused many student across the country to just stop eating school lunches. First Lady
Michelle has cut and restricted so many things in the food requirements making it next to impossible
for the schools to keep up. The requirements have been so strict that schools have to buy cheaper food
to compensate for the nutritional value. She has been leading this for several years now and has
planned on implementing even more restrictions in the future. Obesity in children is a growing
problem across America and that is a well known fact. This is because of how easy we have access to
unhealthy, greasy, fatty foods. Not always is it the children s fault that this is the food they eat, often
times the parents are either too busy or to lazy to actually cook. Again that just goes along with saying
how easy and fast it is to get ahold of this food. Yes, obesity is a problem that needs to be fixed and I
believe she has all the right intentions, she just seems to be going about it in all the wrong ways. More
than 1 Million students across the country has stopped eating school lunches because they are so
processed and fake. According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) finding 48 out of 50

Sources Of Alternative Energy Sources
Alternate Energy Sources
Alternative energy sources are becoming more and more popular. The most important alternative
energy sources are solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, ocean, and hydropower energies. Their main
advantage lies in the resumption of energy resources. This paper will give information about each of
sources as well as their advantages and disadvantages.
Solar energy
The Sun is a leading environmentally clean energy source. The process of generating electricity from
sunlight has been known for over a hundred years. Edmond Becquerel first observed the photovoltaic
effect in 1839 (Zamostny, p. 1). Through a series of experiments on electricity, he plunged two metal
electrodes in a conductive solution and exposed it to sunlight. As a result, there was a small electrical
voltage between electrodes.
Solar energy is used to produce electricity and heat water. The advantages of this energy are noiseless,
lack of air emissions, and renewability of source. The disadvantages of solar energy include a
dependence on solar power from the daily, seasonal position of the Sun, weather conditions, and the
need for large areas for the construction of solar power plants. Also, a serious environmental problem
is the use of toxic substances in the manufacture of solar cells that cause a problem of their disposal.
Wind energy
A second alternative energy source is wind energy. It is used for electricity and actuates a windmill.
Inexhaustibility is the primary advantage of wind

In Should We Let Them Go? Mary Midgley, an English moral philosopher, discusses the positions
behind captivity as well as her own view on the stances. She previews the defensive and abolitionist
position and somewhat critiques each, while answering the question. Bringing up the two drastically
opposite positons, lets her be able to state that there is a possible in between position. The defensive
position defends all the existing customs like having animals in captivity for whatever the purpose is.
This position claims that animals feel no distress because they do not miss what they never had. The
animals have lost their active tendencies over time because of genetic interference and conditioning.
Midgley gives an example of hens showing ancestor behavior challenging the defensive position. She
states that animals can be bored and distressed in confinement especially if they are naturally active
animals like humans. Pain is not necessary for there to be distress in animals. Midgley critiques the
defensive position by saying that it is not very impressive. She points out that animals cannot all be

what animals need is not human rights but protection where they live. If under captivity people should

necessary, what is necessary is knowledge on the animal so that treatment is not inflicting torment.

In urban areas due to expansion of cities and population growth the major problems which arise are

commuters access/egress the transit system by a variety of modes such as by walking, bicycle, manual

Ernest Hemingway Lost Generation Analysis
Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises had provided a vivid picture of the deranged lives of young
English and American expatriates crowding the bars in Paris, engaged in aimless merry making and
labeled as the lost generation by Stein. (Toker,24). The years following World War I, the younger
generation, after seeing the horrors of war, had the mindset of living fast and doing what they wanted
since we were all damned to die. Ernest Hemingway s, The Sun Also Rises, manifests Stein s Lost
Generation by incorporating the up roaring lifestyle of the 20s through the characters personalities.
Hemingway pursues this by focusing on the actions of the main characters: Brett Ashley, Jacob
Barnes, and Robert Cohn. Through Jacob s perception, the reader learns about the excessive drinking,
partying, promiscuity, traveling, and self alienation that the characters of the story took part in. Among
these other things, excessive drinking is a constant theme throughout the novel, supporting Stein s
perception of this generation (Dubose, 2). No matter where any of the main characters where or whom
ever they were with, they always had a drink in their hands, almost always in a constant state of
drunkenness. The novel portrays an agonizing and distressing picture of the post war generation,
displaying two of Hemingway s most remarkable characters: Jacob Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley
(Toker, 26). Jake Barnes felt his disconnection from society because of his experiences in the war and
his inability to indulge himself and love Lady Brett the way he wanted to. Pape 2
I lay awake thinking and my mind jumping around. Then I couldn t keep away from it, And I started
to think about Brett and all the rest of it went away. (Hemingway, 39). After a long night of bar
hopping, drinking with Brett, Robert, and among other friends, Jake comes home and lays down; then
he starts having flash backs from the war. However, Jacob s love for Brett assuaged him into a calmer
state of mind. Jake Barnes alienation results from his physical injury and sexual impotence, this cut
him off from other men not just physically and sexually but also emotionally and socially (Toker, 27).

If we sell the business now, the shareholders can still make some money out of the venture and get out

New Jersey V. Cocuzza Case Study
Before PTSD became an official diagnosis, various other traumatic stress syndromes such as
dissociative flashbacks and survivor guilt were used as criminal defenses for both violent/nonviolent
crimes as well as a basis for successful insanity defenses. Initially PTSD raised concerns about its
potential misuse in criminal courts, however, there were certain incidences where PTSD was found to
be a legitimate phenomenon. Case in point, New Jersey v Cocuzza (1981). In this case, the defendant
was a Vietnam veteran who was found not guilty for reason of insanity when he assaulted a police
officer. Mr. Cocuzza s defense was that at the time of the incident, he believed that he was attacking

My reasons derive from the way the evidence was presented in this case. On a December night, Babbit

Mechanisms of Axon Guidance
Axons are sensitive and their respond depend on the local environment. When the tectum is removed,
retinal axons grow toward the missing tissue, demonstrating that optic axons utilize these
neighbourhood signals as opposed to a long run diffusible attractant from the tectum as they grow
along the optic tract (Taylor, 1990). In the event of a small piece of the optic tract neuroepithelium is
turned 90° preceding the axons enter it, then they become misoriented when they enter the pivoted
transplant (Harris, 1989) and correct their course of growth once they exit. These results confirm that
the neuroepithelium contains local information to which growing axons respond and that they are not
simply following gradients of attractants released by their targets (Sanes et al., 2012). Growth cone
filopodia are long, motile, and covered with receptors, also have a very high surface to volume ratio,
which can help convert membrane signals into large changes in intracellular messengers such as
calcium. Filopodia can show localized transient elevations of intracellular calcium and these transients
reduce filopodial motility (Sanes et al., 2012). Calcium transients can be directly artificially activated
in growth cone filopodia by loading neurons with a calcium caging agent that releases calcium upon
stimulation with a pulse of light (Gomez et al., 2001). Experiments in which calcium is uncaged on
one side of a growth cone generally cause the growth cone to turn toward the side that has

The Career Choice Of Video Editing
I am a guy that likes a lot of different things and I could never just pick one thing that I liked the most.
That is why it was extremely hard for me to choose what I would like to be, I thought long and hard
about what were my favorite thing to do I felt like high school for me was like a big whirlpool of me
trying to figure out what was OK for me to do. (Donald Glover). I came across two things which were
watching movies and listing to music so I chose video editing to be my main career choice because
video editing has to do with the film and audio Why, if someone is good in one field can they not be
accepted or given the slightest opportunity to express and be creative in other fields? (Kanye West), to
me I feel like I could put my creativity in to this carer and really enjoy what I am doing Sometimes it s
the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination. (Aubrey Drake Graham) . I usually like
working with others so we can put our ideas together and create something that is unique and has
different flavors of ideas. I have always liked seeing what great things I could create with people who
think like me and people who think nothing like me. Ever since I was young I always wanted to be
something useful in life like helping someone or saving someone. I had always dreamed of becoming
a neural surgeon or a fireman even paleontologist. Now that I have matured a bit more, I have now
realized that I don t want to be any of those things. I also don t want to be

A Strong Response Reflective Essay
Strong Response Reflective essay
You are confined only by the walls you build yourself, such a short phrase with an enormous meaning.
Isolation is increasing immensely in my life since social media is taking such a huge roll in it. I notice
the continuous blank stare at my phone as I roam the halls of Florida International University. It s like
my social anxiety is a broken leg and my cellphone is my crutch. My cellphone brings me so much
comfort, although I am comforted, I feel so disconnected with the world. Learning is much easier
through social media websites. I am so anti social not only around school, but with myself. Bringing
me to the conclusion that social media is a negative impact in my daily life for more than one reason.

After a few weeks, I decide that it is time to put my phone down and begin to make more connections.
For the first time, I walk around Graham Center with a smile on my face. I am ready to start
conversations I have urged to begin with my FIU peers and professors. I feel this explosion of
happiness as questions, conversations, and sign up sheets are being thrown my way. To my
astonishment, these students are taking an interest in me because my eyes aren t locked to my
cellphone. Jessica Winter states Instagram messes more with your sense of time and I couldn t agree
more. I have been wasting precious time on social media that I can use to grow my circle here at FIU
instead. Filters and likes are all people seek on social media, but my thumbs and mind take over me
and give them what they want. This time it seems someone is letting me borrow a spare key to unlock
the handcuffs that chain my cellphone and I together. Sitting down in class, I witness my professor
coming through the door. He is ready to bring us new information that I can t seem to understand
sometimes. As our professor gets more in depth with our lesson, hands are preparing to launch like a
rocket ship. These students are ready to blast off with questions that they plead answers for. I quietly
say to myself that there is no need to raise my hand during class. Out of the forty students, why would
my professor choose me when I have a

The Mexican Mafia And Organized Crime
The Mexican Mafia, or La Eme , as they refer to themselves, is one of the most powerful and
influential organized crime gangs in the United States. The organization has risen through the decades
of mass gang wars and violence to become the power it is today. Their control is limitless and they
have ventured far beyond the expectations of what was thought that gangs were capable of. They have
infiltrated governments and manipulated politics. They have taken over neighborhoods and attempted
to ethnically cleanse them. Innocent people have become caught up in the affairs of La Eme
throughout its history and many have faced violence and death at their hands. This paper is a continual
of the case analysis of the Mexican Mafia and will attempt to provide explanations for some of the
crimes committed by this organization. Researching gangs and organized crime is important because
of their large influence and control over many aspects of daily life. The significance of attempting to
provide causations of their crimes can better provide the criminal justice system a clearer
understanding of problems that lead to gang members committing crimes on behalf of the
organization. A clearer understanding of problems can help the system to provide solutions to combat
situations that inhibit crimes.

Discipline Should Not Become Child Abuse
Every year more than 3 million reports of children getting abuse are made in the United States
involving more than 6 million children. 1,640 children die as a result of child abuse, between four and
five children a day. Many parents don t realize that their way of disciplining is actually considered
abusing the child. Situation s like this happen not just in the United States but everywhere and
anywhere either by parents, daycares, school, etc. Discipline should never become child abuse. All
parents discipline their children by teaching them appropriate ways to behave. It obviously takes takes
time and patience. Knowing that discipling is to teach your children can guide you in deciding how to
react to their misbehavior. It is a parent s job to discipline their child so that the child grows up
knowing what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Parent s can consider what it is that they need to
learn from the situation. For example, if the 11 year old is hitting her younger sister when she get s
angry, she may need to learn more appropriate ways to express her anger and frustration. Wise parents
will use childhood to prepare a child for success as an adult. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It happens all over the world with different race and people might not notice. Children shouldn t be
abused by the discipline parents think it s right. The purpose of discipline is to help children engage
better with others and to modify or control their behavior. Providing appropriate discipline to children
is one of the most essential responsibilities of a parent and providing consistent and positive discipline
helps grow children into responsible adults. Let s together make children look up to their parents as
their role models and make parents discipline but in a positive way. This can help teach children to
have appropriate behavior, self control, responsibility, while increasing their self

  • 2. Royal Chinook Salmon With the influx of human population immigrating to Pacific Northwest Region of the United States at the end of the 19th century, extracting the natural goods of the environment quickly became an issue of sustainability and preservation. In the State of Washington Ninth Annual Report of the State Fish Commissioner of 1898, author A.C. Little illustrates how the extractive actions along many of Washington s river systems are resulting in a major depletion of salmon species unique to the Northwest. Little s Report aimed to bring attention to over consumption of this finite resource that was not only intrinsically valuable to many people within the region but was also a very successful economic engine too value to deplete. Little s report sought took into account the diversity reaction that his recommendations may propagated, and worked to pair all parties to illustrate that the ultimate outcome was to support a society at the brink of developing into a major economic center of the western United States. • 3. Self Reflection Coming into a college writing course, I did not expect it to be easy. Throughout high school essays were very easy to write due to teachers cutting way too much slack and handing out easy grades. Writing has always been difficult for me, but I feel this is because I have not been challenged yet to demonstrate my full writing ability. I had yet to develop my own voice as a writer. Throughout this course, I was met with many challenges to bring out the true writer inside of me and because of this, I was ultimately able to grow as a writer. The essays that I have written throughout the WRC 1013 course demonstrate that I have developed better annotation skills, communication skills and personal responsibility skills; however, I still need to improve in proofreading and learning how to receive more revisions from my peers. After going through my essays, one self reflection throughout my papers I was able to gather was my growth in developing good annotation throughout my chosen sources. For example, in my first paper Behind the Screen VS. The Real World , my annotation and gathering information from sources was very poor. This is shown in the essay where I completely stated the opposite of what Rita Dove was trying to say in her piece Loose Ends . I state that, As you can see, this is one of many reasons as to how so much screen time can have a negative influence on people which is what Rita Dove is implying in her article ( Behind the Screen Vs. The Real World 2). This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. What Is The Role Of Julius Caesar And Augustus Gaius and Lucius Julius Caesar were adopted by Augustus in 17 BC. They were under the care of Agrippa if he should die. Augustus and Agrippa had their powers renewed and became involved in Gaul and the northern frontiers of Italy. Agrippa will turn his attention to the eastern provinces. In 13 BC, Tiberius received his first consulship, which was an important step for him in the political and social ladder. Agrippa started to return from the east, however he fell ill and died. This was a crushing blow for Augustus to lose his lifelong friend. This was probably the only man in his circle he could truly trust. He had helped Augustus in both the political and military world of Rome. Agrippa was a humble man and seems to be content with the role he was given. There was a grandiose funeral from him and was even buried in Augustus mausoleum. Lepidus who was the pontifex maximus, which is the head of the priests, passed away the title was given over to Augustus. In 11 BC, Tiberius married Julia supporting the bloodline and relation to Augustus. He then turned his attention to the campaigns against the Dalmatians and Pannonians. Augustus once again took the consulship but for his own interest and pursuit. He lead Gaius into the Forum, where the Senate voted that in five years he was to be consul. Augustus did the same ritual for Lucius while holding his 13th consulship. He took great care to have them prepared to succeed him. However, Lucius died in 2 AD and his brother later in 4 ... • 6. Vaccination Of Children And Children Vaccinations in Children Is it fair to not vaccinate children because we don t want to? Because they do not need to and they will not get sick? No. It is not fair to not vaccinate children because they won t get sick. By not vaccinating children you are doing others harm. Every child has a different immune system and reacts to illnesses differently. Imagine having a child with disabilities and having them around children that have not been vaccinated. With the poor immune system autistic kids have they would be catching every disease possible. Autism is a condition typified by abnormal qualitative development of social interactions, communication and imagination, with restricted and repetitive interests and activities (Edward Purssell RGN, RSCN, PhD of the University of London). What causes autism? Many parents like to say that the vaccination MMR has caused their child to have autism later in life. Purssell and other authors and doctors have done countless research to find out the truth about MMR and their being a link between the vaccine MMR and autism. On February 28, 1998, Andrew Wakefield, a gastroenterologist did a paper about eight children whose first symptoms appeared after a month after they had received the MMR vaccine. All of those children had signs of gastrointestinal disease. From what Wakefield observed, the MMR vaccine caused intestinal inflammation, that lead to the blood stream and eventually to the brain where it affected development. Backing this up, ... • 9. Eating Disorders Among Female Athletes Eating Disorders Among Collegiate Female Student Athletes Eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa, bulimia) are not rare in today s society. They have become increasingly common among young women. Research indicates that there is a link between the media s representation of the perfect body as well as ideals of attractiveness with dissatisfaction of body image and eating disorders (Ferguson, Munoz, Garza, Galindo, 2013). In this current literature review, I will focus on the impact of eating disorders among female collegiate student athletes with an emphasis on how sports can play an influential role in the development of eating disorders. Female collegiate student athletes are at risk of developing eating disorders not only because of societal pressures on women to be thin, but also due to sport specific pressures to change their body weight, size or shape. Factors that contribute to sport culture and pressure on female athletes include performance anxiety, revealing uniforms, and coaches influences on their athletes (Coker Cranney Reel, 2015). Sports can be a way to pursue a passion and promote health, but unfortunately the pressures that coincide with sports often become extreme. The pressure to be the best can cause student athletes to resort to harmful measures such as playing through injuries due to fear of losing a starting position on their team. Similarly, athletes are more likely to fall into disordered eating habits because they believe it might help ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Thucydides Trap Summary Mr. Allison first coined the phrase The Thucydides Trap, a trap where a rising power will inevitably challenge the ruling power that could most likely end in war. The Thucydides Trap is occurring in the 21st century between the US, the ruling power, and China, the rising power, who are getting increasingly more powerful on the international stage. War is most likely possible between the two powers, but past history shows that the US and China can get out of the trap through peaceful means. The first evidence that the author uses to support his thesis is previous examples of the ruling power being challenged by the rising power. The first example that author uses is the rivalry between Athens and Sparta, which ended with the Peloponnesian war and with Sparta the victor. The war happened because Sparta and Athens had entangling alliances with other city states who went to war with each other and called the superpowers into the war. ... Using Logos, Ethos And Pathos In Arguments During the course of GET1021, I have learnt many critical thinking and writing skills such as identifying assumptions, distinguishing between deductive and inductive reasoning, evaluating the reliability of evidence or authorities, identifying flaws in reasoning and using logos, pathos and ethos in arguments. These skills helped me with my assignments. I could identify the author s main claim and key arguments quickly. Furthermore, by breaking down the key arguments into components, I could understand them better. These made it easier for me to describe and express the author s ideas in my own words for the summary writing. Additionally, I could distinguish the form and substantiate the validity and soundness or cogency and strength of the author s argument. I could identify underlying assumptions, fallacies and attempts to appeal to ethos, pathos, and/or logos in the author s argument as well. The Monsters in the Epic of Beowulf Essay The poem Beowulf, believed to be written between 650 and 800 by a group of monks, contains several complex characters that have sparked discussions throughout the years. Scholars still continue to ponder over the unanswered questions about characters, such as whether Grendel is monster or human, whether Grendel is evil or not, and what the monsters in Beowulf signify. Other important, though less accepted questions include whether Beowulf is really a hero, or is in actuality a monster, and what allows the characters to be classified as either evil, or not evil. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is enough textual evidence provided in the poem of Beowulf for the reader to assume that Grendel is a monster, which few critics argue. As a means of backing this up, the reader can point out direct statements in the poem, for example, several times Grendel is called ... a fiend out of hell, who is trying to ... work his evil in the world (Beowulf 9), and a ... God cursed brute... (Beowulf 49). One can also utilize the direct descriptions of Grendel, for he is described as being strong enough to ... grab thirty men from their resting places and rush to his lair... Along with these direct statements that Grendel is a monster, there are several facts that are not directly stated, however, they are essential to Grendel s classification. There are several indirect statements in the poem that help to classify Grendel as a monster. For example, there is much depravation in Grendel s life that separates him from the other human beings of that time period. Such as the fact that Grendel is a loner, banished from society, which shows that Grendel has no human communications, which is doubtlessly not a humanlike characteristic. • 18. Analysis Of We Need To Talk About Kevin I agree with this statement because subtle conflict creates rising tension which helps to create the drama of a text. We Need to Talk about Kevin (2011), directed by Lynne Ramsay, is a film set in New York from 1900 s 2001 about a woman, Eva Katchadourian, who encounters her past life elliptically leading up to her sons massacre. Through the themes of guilt, motherhood and nature versus nurture, we are able to truly experience the drama of the film through techniques such as cinematography, colour palette and dialogue. The drama of We Need to Talk about Kevin is developed throughout the film in many scenes that create rising tension leading up to the climactic point. In the scene where Eva is in a prenatal class, a wide shot helps us to recognise that she is very melancholic and withdrawn from the other pregnant women surrounding her. The close up shots of the surrounding women s babies while Eva still has her shirt on is interpreted as Eva coming to terms with her loss of independence and freedom. This scene creates an effect of misery and loathing through the lighting technique. It is very dark and not very colourful or full of life like it should be. This scene was explored by viewers to see that Eva was miserable without her independence ad that in fact she did not want to become a mother. It also helps viewers to understand that motherhood isn t for everybody but societal pressure makes women think that we have to have babies or we are not giving back to the ... • 19. Forrest Thomson Poetic Artifice Analysis Two Co Option Co option is I argue most clearly defined by Veronica Forrest Thomson s Poetic Artifice. A text, that pushed back against critics of the previous generation and endeavoured early on to integrate structuralist thought with post structuralist. This integration between structuralism and post structuralism can be seen as an attempt to get at the importance of poetry. In an attempt to stress and illuminate poetry s unique ability to be transformative of both language and the world. Forrest Thomson in Poetic Artifice demands an intense focus on all the rhythmic, phonetic, verbal and logical devices which makes poetry different from prose to best consider this transformative nature. It is in this distinguishing of poetry from prose, and the highly formalist manner and structuralist distrust of language s transparency in which she follows that one can also see a similar differencing between the broader spectrum of literature with the sciences. There is no need in Forrest Thomson s work for differing areas to be inclusive of one another, to the point of loss of individuality, because of a homogenizing of methodology and epistemic reasoning. Throughout both Poetic Artifice and her thesis Poetry as Knowledge: The Use of Science by Twentieth Century Poets, Forest Thomson can be seen to put forward a new structure, in which separation is crucial for any kind of interrelation between the two fields of knowledge. Euripides confers on his Medea impunity in this alternative, unconventional rendition of the story. This approach immediately limits the ability of the performance to rationally explain the workings of the world through the cycle of nemesis, but there are some noteworthy scenes and implied lessons in Euripides Medea that make the experience, on a whole, worthwhile. The play gives no foreshadowing to Jason s hubris of taking the Princess of Corinth as his wife, proceeding straight to highlight the extremity of the transgression as Medea expressively cries out upon Themis, goddess of prayers, and Zeus, acknowledged the protector of oaths among mortals (Euripides, 168 170). Medea authoritatively says that in Jason s act of hubris of firstly, breaking his original marriage oath and secondly, treating his current wife (Medea) with cruelty to her face, he acts against the gods, her and the whole human race (Euripides, 468 471). Her authority stems from the widely acknowledged importance and immutability of the oaths, since, as Medea rightfully highlights, the gods Jason swore by during his marriage to Medea probably continue to rule and men in society continue to live by the same standards of what is right (Euripides, 493 6). • 31. Sources Of Alternative Energy Sources Alternate Energy Sources Alternative energy sources are becoming more and more popular. The most important alternative energy sources are solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, ocean, and hydropower energies. Their main advantage lies in the resumption of energy resources. This paper will give information about each of sources as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Solar energy The Sun is a leading environmentally clean energy source. The process of generating electricity from sunlight has been known for over a hundred years. Edmond Becquerel first observed the photovoltaic effect in 1839 (Zamostny, p. 1). Through a series of experiments on electricity, he plunged two metal electrodes in a conductive solution and exposed it to sunlight. As a result, there was a small electrical voltage between electrodes. Solar energy is used to produce electricity and heat water. The advantages of this energy are noiseless, lack of air emissions, and renewability of source. The disadvantages of solar energy include a dependence on solar power from the daily, seasonal position of the Sun, weather conditions, and the need for large areas for the construction of solar power plants. Also, a serious environmental problem is the use of toxic substances in the manufacture of solar cells that cause a problem of their disposal. • 38. Ernest Hemingway Lost Generation Analysis Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises had provided a vivid picture of the deranged lives of young English and American expatriates crowding the bars in Paris, engaged in aimless merry making and labeled as the lost generation by Stein. (Toker,24). The years following World War I, the younger generation, after seeing the horrors of war, had the mindset of living fast and doing what they wanted since we were all damned to die. Ernest Hemingway s, The Sun Also Rises, manifests Stein s Lost Generation by incorporating the up roaring lifestyle of the 20s through the characters personalities. Hemingway pursues this by focusing on the actions of the main characters: Brett Ashley, Jacob Barnes, and Robert Cohn. Through Jacob s perception, the reader learns about the excessive drinking, partying, promiscuity, traveling, and self alienation that the characters of the story took part in. Among these other things, excessive drinking is a constant theme throughout the novel, supporting Stein s perception of this generation (Dubose, 2). No matter where any of the main characters where or whom ever they were with, they always had a drink in their hands, almost always in a constant state of drunkenness. The novel portrays an agonizing and distressing picture of the post war generation, displaying two of Hemingway s most remarkable characters: Jacob Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley (Toker, 26). Jake Barnes felt his disconnection from society because of his experiences in the war and his inability to indulge himself and love Lady Brett the way he wanted to. Pape 2 I lay awake thinking and my mind jumping around. Then I couldn t keep away from it, And I started to think about Brett and all the rest of it went away. (Hemingway, 39). After a long night of bar hopping, drinking with Brett, Robert, and among other friends, Jake comes home and lays down; then he starts having flash backs from the war. However, Jacob s love for Brett assuaged him into a calmer state of mind. • 43. Mechanisms of Axon Guidance Axons are sensitive and their respond depend on the local environment. When the tectum is removed, retinal axons grow toward the missing tissue, demonstrating that optic axons utilize these neighbourhood signals as opposed to a long run diffusible attractant from the tectum as they grow along the optic tract (Taylor, 1990). In the event of a small piece of the optic tract neuroepithelium is turned 90° preceding the axons enter it, then they become misoriented when they enter the pivoted transplant (Harris, 1989) and correct their course of growth once they exit. These results confirm that the neuroepithelium contains local information to which growing axons respond and that they are not simply following gradients of attractants released by their targets (Sanes et al., 2012). Growth cone filopodia are long, motile, and covered with receptors, also have a very high surface to volume ratio, which can help convert membrane signals into large changes in intracellular messengers such as calcium. Filopodia can show localized transient elevations of intracellular calcium and these transients reduce filopodial motility (Sanes et al., 2012). Calcium transients can be directly artificially activated in growth cone filopodia by loading neurons with a calcium caging agent that releases calcium upon stimulation with a pulse of light (Gomez et al., 2001). Experiments in which calcium is uncaged on one side of a growth cone generally cause the growth cone to turn toward the side that has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
