Grammar Is The Foundation Of The Majority Of Our Literary...
Grammar is the foundation of the majority of our literary works throughout the years. Although as
teaching styles evolve throughout time, the instruction of grammar should evolve as well. An article
in The Atlantic, "The Wrong Way to Teach Grammar," by Michelle Navarre Cleary, touches base on
how grammar lessons today should be learned through the use of creative writing rather than more
traditional means of grammar instruction. Her article does well as she connects the reader logically
and emotionally about how grammar hinders people's passion of English and writing. Although, I do
believe that grammar can first be taught by more traditional means to understand how to use the
skill and then later be applied through creative writing, rather than eliminating grammar lessons
altogether. The author, Michelle Cleary, who is now an associate professor and dean at DePaul
University is accredited with her professional writing skills. Before working at DePaul, she taught
writing at a community college for eight years. However, the dropout rate at the community college
was astoundingly at a 90 percent rate. She infers that one of the primary culprits for not finishing
school was the required developmental writing classes with traditional grammar lessons. Ms. Cleary
also mentions how students tell her these "grammar confessions" which would altogether have them
avoid writing. Although grammar is not generally enjoyable to learn, it is helpful to learn and refresh
the rules of grammar

The Importance Of Proper Grammar : Why Bother
Grammar is an important skill that is put into practice on a daily basis. Proper grammar is essential
to understanding one's own language and for communication to happen between individuals who
speak the same tongue. Grammar also lays the foundation for effective communication and if used
improperly the message that wants to go through will loses its initial meaning. Grammar skills are of
great importance, since they are useful in every aspect of life. Grammar is acquired even before a
baby is born; therefore, grammar skills are equally important at home. Children learn their
grammatical patterns through their immediate family, shaping their initial unconscious grammar. As
children are old enough to attend school, they are required to learn the conscious grammar that is
made up of rules. Proper grammar is a valuable tool for success, and like everything else, grammar
follows a hierarchy of patterns that are essential for clarification, meaning, and intent of everyday
communication. In the short article by Stephen Krashen, "Teaching Grammar: Why Bother," the
author states that through research there is evidence that writing abilities and reading skills are
related. The author goes on to say that those who read more, do better in their writing skills. Krashen
argues that there is little need for "formal instruction in grammar" for those individuals who credit
their reading skills responsible for their great writing skills. The article points out that while learning

The Importance Of Communication Skills At Work
Throughout the workplace communication and grammar is high–priority. Some bosses won't even
hire people that don't have good grammar. In the WaPo article "Why Can't College Graduates Write
Coherent Prose?', he states that good writers are hard to find these days and employers are in need of
good writers. People fail to realize how important good communication skills are regardless of what
career they are trying to pursue. Communication solves many problems and helps avoid confusion;
good grammar and communication skills will set a better pathway to success.
Grammar and communication at work is more critical than we think. Having good grammar will
help us be better prepared to achieve our goals. While reading Susan Adam's article "Why Grammar
Counts at Work", I picked up on a few of her main reasons why having good grammar at work is
crucial. She states that having good grammar will prevent important writings from being static or
dull. Another main reason was that good grammar will help manifest how organized one can be with
their intentions and thoughts. She implies that we are most likely master our work if our sentences
are organized and structured, which ties back to her original statement of organization helping with
our intentions and thoughts. In addition to those reasons she gives us another reason why having
good grammar is important, it will help avoid sloppy work. Bosses are looking for people who take
notice of what they are writing down on paper; attention to

Grammar, History, Development And Prescriptive Grammar
Introduction Do you think grammar is important? Do you know the function of grammar? Can you
imagine living a life without grammar? Grammar is a set of rules for language. In this chapter, we
will cover general ideas of grammar, including the definition, history, development, syntax, and how
learners learn grammar. 3.1 Definition of Grammar Grammar is certainly a common word, it may be
a boring subject to you or an explorative subject that you want to probe for. No matter what,
grammar has been a long–established academic term and it is an imperative part of language. First,
get to know the word 'grammar'. The term grammar is derived from the Greek word grammatikē,
where gram meant something written. The part tikē is derived from technē and ... Show more

Its content is rich and complex. It includes: 1) Syntax(how words are ordered to form sentences;
study of different sentence types); 2) Morphology(how letters/sounds combine to make meaningful
units); 3) Phonology(study of sounds/significant sounds (phonemes)); 4) Semantics(the study of
meaning) and Pragmatics(how to understand other speakers' intended meaning) 3.1.1 Descriptive
grammar and Prescriptive grammar One basic distinction of grammar is between Descriptive
grammar and Prescriptive grammar. Descriptive grammar refers to the structure of a language as it is
actually used by speakers and writers, it is from living language and up–to–date. The language in
descriptive grammar is constantly changing, fluid and organic, it also describes reality from
authentic data. Prescriptive grammar refers to the structure of a language as certain people (usually
learned scholars) think it should be used, it emphasis on correctness. It is the unchanging set of
rules, which is seen as the idealised 'perfection'. 3.1.2 Different Types of Grammar There are
different varieties of grammar, which is the different ways of describing and analyzing the structures
and functions of language. Apart from the basic distinction of grammar between descriptive
grammar and prescriptive grammar, there are ten more types of

Is Google Making Us Stupid?
In the last fifty years, technology has and is still advancing above and beyond every single year.
Apple comes out with a new iPhone every year and new games or gadgets. We are using the internet
for basically any question we have, to communicate with others or even promoting anything.
Technology has taken over everything we do in our daily lives. As Carr concluded in his story " Is
Google Making Us Stupid?", he stated "as we come to rely on computers to mediate our
understanding of the world, it is our own intelligence that flattens into artificial intelligence." Carr 's
conclusion is a very accurate statement of what our world is becoming. Future generations will be
carried on like this, consumed with the social media and computers to decide what the world is and
what they should think. I believe strongly that computers do influence us a lot of our thinking, and
even lowering our intelligence. The more and more technology grows and keeps on doing things for
us, is how we are creating this "artificial intelligence". Even my own use of computers can support
this. I was born in 1998, I have seen the huge advancements with computers and cellphones. My
first interaction and playing on a computer was at the age of 5 and I played on the Paint program and
pinball. I loved playing it everyday. When we started using computers in school, I had to learn how
to type and know the basics of computers. Now that I am 17, I simply cannot live without using the
computer for homework and

Reflection Paper
Ever since I was born, I was raised in a Vietnamese household where my parents and grandparents
always communicated to me in only Vietnamese. Before I was four years old, I slowly learned
English from watching television and listening American radio stations. In my elementary school, I
learned the American alphabet by memorization and repetition of the sounds and signs of the
American alphabet. Then teachers started to make students learn new vocabulary and helping
students make flashcards with pictures for visual aid. To improve my communication skills in
English, my teachers often made the students work in groups, so students can learn from each other
and practice their speaking. English is all about memorization and then applying what I learned to
other situations. During the summer, I went to extra English classes, and my summer school
teachers emphasized the importance of vocabulary and grammar. I learned how to diagram
sentences based on their parts of speech and memorized how certain phrases must correspond to a
set of rule to satisfy the English grammar. My teachers in high school tested my English skills
through public speeches and numerous essays. During high school, I also went to Vietnamese school
for four years every Sunday where they emphasized the importance of memorization and repetition.
My teachers gave me homework to read, and I had memorize certain poems or short stories. They
would test me by making me recite the poem or write down the short stories by

Difference Between Nature And Nurture In Language
Nature and nurture both play significant roles in a child's development of language. Many scholars
(such as Coulmas 1989 as cited in Christie, 2005) agree that the human brain is designed for
language, yet they also state that it is learned because of relationships and interactions with those
around them for example a child's parents (Christie, 2005). There are four major aspects of language
development: phonology – the sound structure of speech, syntax – grammatical rules, semantics –
meaning of words and phrases – and pragmatics – using language to communicate. Theorists and
scholars alike have debated nature versus nurture for many years, however it's not nature or nurture
but rather an interplay of the two creating a unique development of language for children (Caton,
Brisbane, Australia).
Phonological development is the ability to be able to identify individual sounds and combine them
into spoken words. From three months, babies will start to recognise their parent's voices, and by
four to seven months' babies will be able to recognise change in tone as well as respond to sounds
such as music. As babies start to develop language they will start to form phonemes together e.g.
mama, dada. The environment plays a big role in the early language development of a child, as the
behaviourist perspective states children start to learn language through operant conditioning –
repetition and imitation followed by positive reinforcement – and classical conditioning – children

Grammar Translation Method And Communicative Language...
A widely used method for language learning in Bangladeshi schools isGrammar TranslationMethod
(GTM) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Grammar Translation Method is a very
traditional methodand I think in more or less in all medium schools it is mainly used. When we visit
two schools, teachers were also use Grammar Translation Method and Communicative Language
Teaching (CLT)for teaching the students. From my point of view, in our Bangladeshi culture
especially beginner level of students need appropriate use of both native language (L1) and target
language (L2) and for that reason Grammar Translation Method and Communicative Language
Teaching (CLT), both are suitable. Also in Asian part of the world the parents are very conscious

Background:
When the people of the western world wanted to know about the foreign languages like Greek and
Latin the grammar translation method appeared. Grammatical rule, memorization of vocabulary,
translation of the text was its focal point. In that time, the Latin language was generally based on
structure and their main objective was to understand the fundamentals of grammar and translation. It
was a hope that through the grammatical rule of the target language the student would know more
about the grammatical rules of their native language and then, it would help them to speak and write
in their native language better. So thinking about the objective of the language, the method came to
be known as classical method. At present, it is very well known as the Grammar Translation

Semantics, Syntax, And Variation Of Language
When one takes an advanced grammar course, they are in for a new vision of learning and
understanding grammar. Most people are taught grammar as early as Elementary school, however,
they only recognize grammar for its functions in the written language and not the true meanings it
has on sentence structures and clauses. There are many views on the importance grammar usages.
Different Linguist has different theories. The two main grammar usages that are discussed are
Grammar Discourse and Cohesion. Linguistics is the study of the nature, structure, and variation of
language that includes phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics ("Linguistics,"
n.d., p. 1). In Linguistics, discourse is defined as a unit of text described by ... Show more content on

124). Larger clauses that makeup of many sentences are considered linguistic items. Many books,
stories, poems, and even lectures include linguistic items. Many clauses in a story make up language
or utterances. Being able to distinguish the utterance in a lecture or story will help the listener
identify if the material is complete or incomplete. Texts consist of longer sentences that would make
it hard for the reader to clarify the subject in one sentence. Stages in narratives help the linguist
point out the events in the story. The stages breakdown the settings, events, and resolution of the
narrative. The structural scheme is identified, and all the stages of the narrative can be put into the
correct order ("Test and Discourse," 2007, p. 7). Grammar and discourse can sometimes be two
different types of communication, but they can compliment each other. Mira Ariel described
grammar and discourse as " Grammar specifies a set of language codes and guides speakers on how
to properly construct sentences, which are then conjoined by entirely different discourse principals
into a coherent piece of discourse" (Ariel, 2009, p. 5). Not all texts are of equal value as some
contains salient information that brings the story to its climax. Salient text consists of main–line
verb clauses. Longacere calls this method of discourse salient system.

The Importance Of Writing Badly By Bruce Ballenger
The Importance of Writing Badly was written by Bruce Ballenger. His intended audience are
students who are victims of strict English teachers as well as the strict English teachers, themselves.
In his essay, Ballenger portrays that students are more focused on being grammatically correct than
the message in their essays. This is because of teachers who grade strictly on grammar errors and
punctuation. Ballenger says, "A colleague of mine, an Ivy League graduate, is among the self–
appointed grammar police, complaining often about the dumb mistakes his students make in their
papers. I don't remember him ever talking about what his students are trying to say in those papers."
(Page 74). Bruce Ballenger has effectively argued and persuaded his intended audience with his use
of ethos, pathos, and logos. Ballenger has a huge credibility. He is an English professor at a
university. Ballenger must grade his own students' essays, which helps build his reputation; also, he
has gone through experiences where teachers graded his essays only on his errors. Ballenger tells
how he had a teacher back in grade school named Mrs. O'Neill; his teacher would not be patient
when it came to an incorrect sentence. (Page 73). He understands why his students are stricken with
fear when it comes to trying to get their essays "perfect" for their teacher. Ballenger said, "Many of
my students come to me similarly voiceless, dreading the first writing assignment because they
mistakenly believe that how

Grammar In The Hunger Games
Grammar is a concept that is used in writing, speaking and even reading; it describes a language and
can be different depending on the location of a person. Grammar is affected by the dialect that a
person speaks. I have chosen the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins to focus on various
grammar topics and build a better understanding of some topics. This book is one that examines the
life of families in twelve districts, all of which are currently living their lives at different paces and
in different styles. Twice a year two people are chosen to come forward and attend the "Hunger
Games", in which each person must basically fight to their death. The last person left is declared the

Grammar instruction starts with young children and extends all the way through college, because it
is a key part of writing and reading instruction. Grammar as part of writing instruction is important
because if you, as the writer, do not correctly write a sentence then the sentence is not going to make
any sense. Not only is this going to affect the sentence itself, but also it is going to affect the entire
paper. Using the book The Hunger Games, I knew I would not find any grammar errors because it is
a professional written piece and has been edited. It did provide great examples to show the use of
adjectives, nouns, noun clauses, adverbs and verbs, being that the book is written showing a great

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Audio Lingual Method
Nowadays, although teaching and learning English has constantly changed, the Audio–Lingual
Method still plays a significant role in many English classes around the world. According to Larsen–
Freeman (2000), the Audio–Lingual Method was developed from an interesting idea that behavioral
psychology and linguistic conventions are closely related to each other. Thus, this method aims to
enhance learners' ability by overlearn and habit formation.
The goal of this method is to help the students to be able to communicate in the target language. In
order to achieve this purpose, the Audio–Lingual Method contains the following characteristics.
Firstly, contextualized dialogs are utilized to present new vocabulary and structures in class.
Secondly, the conversations are learned through drills which are considered as an integral part of the
Audio–Lingual Method. In my own teaching, backward build–up drill, repetition drill and
substitution drill contribute importantly the success of students' learning. Next, grammar rules are
induced from examples. By this approach, students personalize and use the grammatical points
naturally like the way they acquire the native language. Based on above features, it is believed that
the Audio–Lingual Method has a part in the communicative development of students in the target
language.

Bilinguals and Monolinguals In today's society, it is essential that one knows more than one
language to be very well qualified in acquiring jobs. However, learning a new language is not an
easy task. One must be dedicated and be fully immersed to be fluent at it later on. There are certain
grammatical rules that exists in one language but not in the others. Grammatical gender, for an
example, is present in various languages around the world, including German. In the other hand,
there is the English language which does not possess the use of gender grammar, specifically
definitive article "the" and indefinite articles "a/an" in English, and "der/die/das" and "ein/einer/ein"
in German. Der/ein is the gender grammar for masculine words, die/einer for feminine, and das/ein
for neutral. However, these article could change depending if the sentence is describing the noun
being presented is either genitive, dative, or accusative, turning them to either des/dem/den or
eines/einem/einen. Despite such complex article rule, German and English are both Indo–European
languages that have several cognate words, which could be beneficial for English speakers learning
the language.Another interesting idea is whether bilinguals of English and Tagalog, which is an
Austronesian language, would have such limitation in being fluent to the third language because of
the article rules. It would be interesting to see if

Career Field Of Information Technology
In the career field of information technology, professional writing skills and abilities are an asset to
becoming a successful employee. Some specific writing skills needed are grammar, spelling, and
structure. When it comes to writing, both professionals who work in the field and career guidebooks
suggest that if a person is interested in this career path, he or she should be able to have clear
communication skills. Writing in this career is about communicating with the employees, and the
manager of the company. The manager and Co–workers will read maintenance logs and step by step
instructions, writing those documents in a professional manner, shows the skill the employee has.
Without being able to clearly communicate, work to others, and employee's skills will not benefit
the company. Although writing is not the most important aspect of the job, it is a required skill.
To succeed and advance in this career field, the first specific writing skill one must develop is
spelling. Readers will not be able to comprehend documents, if words are not spelled the correct
way. In order to become proficient in this skill, one must take the time to read, whether it be books,
articles, or a script. Bombards the mind with new words and lingo, on a daily basis, increase the
retention of how to properly spell and use a said word. Another specific skill is grammar, and this
can be developed by revising papers and fixing those constant grammatical errors. Doing so,

Importance of Grammar Essay
A. Introduction
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching.
Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made.
Batstone (1994) states that "language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without
the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified" (p. 4). More vividly, Wang
(2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive
factor to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose
function is to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction
manifests its own significance as it helps students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and its theoretical rationale will be respectively reported in the fourth and fifth part before the final

B. Evaluation of Miss Wong's Teaching Approach
B(1). Teaching philosophy
It is teachers' beliefs rather than their knowledge that have a greater influence on their instruction
(William & Burden, 2000). Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers' beliefs about learners:
resisters, receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers.
Unlike the first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners' active
involvement (as cited in William & Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong's teaching approach, a PPP model
(i.e., Presentation, Practice and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target
grammatical structure of passive voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher's answer
checking. However, it seems the final production step is omitted, resulting in students' lacking
opportunities to apply the knowledge into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss
Wong tends to regard her students as receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits.
What the instruction concerns is whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or
vice verse from a structural level, which is a typical example of a

It gives a different meaning. If you mistakenly write, it will have a significant impact on your
writing. There are theories that say, knowledge of grammar is superfluous for a successful
communication because children are able to communicate without having any knowledge of
grammar. Based on this theory, grammatical knowledge is not required. However, if we as teachers
do not emphasize grammar knowledge as part of the English language dominates the whole process
of learning, then it makes a difficult learning process. Comparative understanding of grammar has
led to different levels and interest in teaching English. Have detailed knowledge of grammar does
not mean that students have mastery of speaking and communicating. It's more to dominate part of
the subjects that still require practice in terms of written and spoken.
Learning and teaching grammar includes not only a way to manipulate the presentation simple
language, but also learn that there are rules in the context of grammar. If teachers and students are
communicating, they should be able to produce language in a way that is understandable. Grammar
can be taught together through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Teaching English as a

Formal Instruction Of Grammar In School
Topic: Argue whether formal instruction of grammar in school is helpful and enlightening for
someone who wants to become a good writer. Today, formal grammar is essential in our academic
careers, requiring us to write concise and professional assignments in order to exercise creativity
and leave impressions on instructors. Although, the effectiveness of the explicit instruction of formal
grammar is still under speculation; even individuals from academic and research backgrounds are
skeptic about whether explicit formal grammar instruction is effective at all. Although, it sounds
only nonsensical to even consider abolishing this instructional method, for why should learning
grammar be based on one's own knowledge of it? Why should the student's initial experience with
grammar be deemed as more important than proper instruction? The explicit instruction of formal
grammar in society is necessary, for the consequences of removing this practice can prevent core
grammar from being taught in the first place; also, even if other methods would prove more
effective, applying this would be too much of a risk, and ultimately keep students from discovering
talents, and make it more difficult for foreign students to learn English as a second language. The
debate about grammar instruction does not entail whether grammar should be taught, but rather how
it should be taught. Formal grammar instruction, also known as traditional grammar instruction, is a
teaching method where students

The Importance Of Learning A Foreign Language
Learning a new language can either be based on necessity or the willingness to learn a new
language. Whether a student/adult care for the language or not, it is becoming very important in the
process of obtaining a better job, or the need to learn a new culture. There are many concepts and
ideas that go alongside the process of learning a new language. For that reason, this essay will try to
explain through research why and how people learn English as a foreign language with the help of a
former student.
Student Background:
The student interviewed for the Needs Analysis is named Karen Estefania Romero Flores. Spanish is
her first language, but finds time to practice with her older brother outside of school. She expressed
the joy of communicating with her peers and being able to answer the teacher's questions. Karen has
a mother, father, and brother all living in the same household, yet she is not married, nor has any
children of her own. She has born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and attends IMAC to learn
English as a second language.
Motivation:
The background motivation for Karen to learn English has to do with internal and external
incentives. Two concepts named intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. The love for music, movies, and
culture are her intrinsic motivations because this is what motivated her to learn English. Her
extrinsic motivations include her desired to communicate with her older brother that spoke English,
as well as, her desire to obtain a higher paying

The Essential Preparation For Life And Career
Ancient and medieval authors believed that the seven liberal arts were propaedeutic to the study of
all topics and matters. Their belief remains evident in our school systems, as many universities and
colleges focus on providing a liberal arts education. In fact, the Dedman College at Southern
Methodist University mentions the importance of a liberal arts education in their mission statement,
as it is the "essential preparation for life and career". The understanding of the seven liberal arts
inspires a broader and more focused study of materials often discussed in classes. Five of the seven
liberal arts can be directly applied to the study of Rural Matters. An understanding of geometry,
arithmetic, and astronomy is essential in gaining a deeper capacity for Rural Matters. Through
Isidore of Seville's Etymologies, we gain the understanding that without logic and grammar we
would not be able to appropriately discuss rural matters.
Isidore of Seville begins book seventeen of Etymologies, as he normally does, with the author and
creator of the topic at hand. Isidore of Seville acknowledges the uncertainty of the creator by listing
the different possibilities. According to the Greeks, Hesiod of Boeotia was the first to make skill in
writing on rural matters a part of the liberal education. According to the Romans, Cato was the first
to treat agriculture, Marcus Terence was the first to refine its study and Vergil exalted it with the
skill of his poetry (PAGE). Isidore explains

The Codification Of English

an essential component in the process of standardization. First of allwe can define codification of
English as the process of setting up official system or rules to language components like words,
grammar and pronunciation. In other words Process of codification can be simply defined as
standardizing important aspects or features of a certain language such as words, grammar and
pronunciation. Since the language could be gathered in official dictionary, this means that this
language has been codified. English is the most famous language all over the world. In other words,

In other words we can say that process of codification gives a special legal status to the languageall

Here we can note the important role of process of codification of English. Furthermore, we can add
that 178 countries in the world have an official language at the national level. Among those, English
is the most common with 51 nations giving it official status. This proves the need of codification of
English. If I want to express my own point of view concerning the process of codification, I can say
that the process of codification of English attributed in establishing and maintaining English as a

grammatical or punctuation errors. These goals sometimes get in the way of me expressing myself
freely; if a sentence doesn't flow right with rest of the paragraph, I will re–examine my paragraph or
paper to see if I can conjure up a sentence to finish out my paragraph before moving on to the next
paragraph. Another example is if I feel like I don't ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Especially, if I am having a writer's block moment, I use the acronym to make sure I have hit all the
high point and have all the things I need content–wise for my paragraph to be complete. Among
some of the rules, I was taught in high school to never use second or first person POV, being
conversational is not something I want to have in my writing, and to not use the same sentence
structure consecutively. This is why I was so hesitant to write my first assignment for this class; it
was difficult because it seems whatever I was taught to do in those English classes are the opposite
of what this class wants me to do.
I have a love–hate relationship with writing. One of the many reason I hate writing is because I
worry so much about my punctuation. I could be writing an amazing paper, but when I go back and
find a thousand punctuation errors, I try to switch up the writing to make it flow more. When the
topic is relatable I excel in the assignment, but if it is not relatable it takes me some time to start or
find a connection I can use as a building block. One of the many things I love about writing is the
freedom to express my ideas without feeling self–conscious. For example, I love writing spoken
word poems, but finding the courage to actually say them aloud in front of an audience scares me a
bit. Another negative for me is that I have difficulty expounding on simple topics that the teacher
wants me to write more on. I could write a few sort sentences and answer the

Samuel Johnson Research Paper
Samuel Johnson's Influential Dictionary In order to provide a sufficient response to this intriguing
inquiry, one should acknowledge the influential milestones of the Early Modern English period
(c.1450 –1750) that laid the groundwork for the emergence of Samuel Johnson's invaluable
dictionary. On the top of that list is the evolution of the English Renaissance which is often referred
to as the "Elizabethan Era" or the "Age of Shakespeare" after the most significant monarch and
notable dramatist of that memorable era. Another remarkable occurrence is the British exploration,
colonization, and overseas trade which hastened the English language's acquisition of loanwords.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that the glorious union of England and Scotland took place at that
time while English acquired a typographic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, this era did have its downsides as well as its advantages. Thier only relevant disadvantage
which is worth mentioning in this paper is that Latin and French were the dominant languages of
school curriculums and the government. Therefore, English was not only faced with derogatory
attitudes but it was also regarded as the vernacular of that age until the end of the sixteenth century
where a more favorable view of it began to emerge. Notably, the tables were turned and English
became the universally authorized language of the regime and the prevailing academic disciplines
such as philosophy, medicine, law, and theology due to the fact that the role of the dominant
languages extremely declined. As a consequence, the most remarkable breakthrough occurred in the
middle of the 18th century which was the publication of Samuel Johnson's dictionary. Indeed, "A
Dictionary of the English Language" is the first lexicographical work to be viewed as an ideal model
for all lexicographers (this term is used to refer to dictionary writers who occupy themselves with
tracing the origins of the language and detailing both the

The 1944 Education Act and Its Ramifications to Date
The 1944 Education Act and its ramifications to date
The purpose of this essay is to identify the features of the 1944 Education Act and its ramifications.
The state of education prior to the 1944 Act will be mentioned and how it mirrored society as a
whole. A critical appraisal of justifications for selection and comprehensivisation, as a successor to
the tripartite system, will be addressed. This paper will also provide an explanation of the selection
process and the arguments and problems that relate to it. I will be analysing the sociological ideas
and will be discussing post war trends and events in Britain and education in particular and
evaluating how issues of ability, IQ, class, gender and or/ethnicity have affected change. ... Show

Few technical schools were established and the secondary modern became the cinderellas of the
education service despite providing for the majority of the school population." (Roger 1986: 3)
This extract shows that new system didn't manage to reduce the social division it merely replaced it
with a newer form of social division.
The nature/nurture debate is neither unique nor particular to the 1944 Act, but it is something to be
addressed. Nature, suggesting your intelligence is inherited from your parents and nurture, the belief
that learning is affected by the home and the school environment. Relating the debate to the 1944
Act, brings to our attention the difference in education between social classes. The upper and middle
class children would have definitely had advantage over the working class children, in terms of
cognitive development, as their parents would have been well educated and able to pass on far
greater knowledge. They also would have had better living conditions and quieter homes to
concentrate on homework. The working class tended to have many children, shared bedrooms would
have been common, which was not the ideal learning environment.
The philanthropic aspects of the act were very much linked to the Second World War. The generally
poor fitness standards of the working class recruits highlighted to the government that changes
needed to be made. Free milk in schools, regular

In regards to improvement, the NAPLAN results suggest that Nadia has improved 11.6% in her
reading from Year 5. She has also improved in spelling, with a 17.2% increase, as well as a 19.4%
increase in numeracy. These percentages all fall out of the margin of error, indicating an accurate
and sound level of improvement. However, Nadia's writing NAPLAN result indicated a 0%
improvement from Year 5, as well as a 1.5% decrease in punctuation and grammar. While the
decrease of 1.5% in grammar and punctuation is within the margin of error I would like to argue that
we should not be seeing a decrease in results at this stage of Nadia's schooling.
Grammar and punctuation was the only section of the NAPLAN paper where Nadia answered all

The meta–analysis of these studies found that method yielded negative results (Anderson, 1997).
This proposes that traditional methods of teaching grammar did not improve the abilities of the
students. Sentence combining by contrast provides a more effective substitute to traditional grammar
and punctuation instruction as it not only develops students' written work but also improve their
syntactic abilities. Furthermore, a recent study establish that instructing students to pay attention to
the purpose and real–world application of grammar and punctuation in the framework of writing
created stronger and more positive impacts on students' written work (Fearn & Farnan, 2005).
Largely, the studies on teaching grammar and punctuation suggest that, unconventional methods like
sentence combining, have a far more significant impact than those of traditional means to develop
the quality of students' grammar and punctuation and subsequently their

The Importance Of Communication Skills At Work
Communication
Throughout the workplace communication and grammar is high–priority. Some bosses won't even
hire people that don't have good grammar. In the WaPo article "Why Can't College Graduates Write
Coherent Prose?', he states that good writers are hard to find these days and employers are in need of
good writers. People fail to realize how important good communication skills are regardless of what
career they are trying to pursue. Communication solves many problems and helps avoid confusion;
good grammar and communication skills will set a better pathway to success.
Bosses are looking for people who take
notice of what they are writing down on paper;

Teaching Grammar In Context Essay
The study of grammar all by itself would not necessarily make the learner a better writer or speaker.
However, by gaining a clearer understanding of how the language works, the learner should be able
to gain greater control over the way he shapes words into sentences and sentences into paragraphs.
In short, studying grammar may help learners to perceive the structures of the language effectively.
Larsen–Freeman (2001) as cited in Mart (2013), describes grammar as a system of meaningful
structures and patterns that are governed by particular pragmatic constraints. This clearly indicates
that grammar plays a crucial role in learning the target language. Grammar instruction is one of the
most difficult issues that people have encountered in language learning and teaching. Therefore, the
best way to overcome this issue is by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Mart (2013), It will be more motivating for learners if grammar is taught in context as
they will have an opportunity to perceive how the new grammar structures work. In my point of
view, I strongly agree with this statement saying that grammar should be taught in context. For
instance, as a learner, I also prefer the context–based method as it is much easier for me to
understand the concept of the grammar itself.
Teaching grammar in isolated sentences is not going to help the learners because they cannot see the
relationship between the grammatical concepts through a logical context. It was mentioned in the
article that teaching grammar in context provides a meaningful framework that connects to reality in
the targeted language (Anderson, 2005). This concludes that teaching grammar in context is very
helpful in developing the learners' comprehension of the grammatical

What I Learned From My Writing
Since the beginning of English 1100, I have created trends in my writing. My approach to writing,
point of view, and writing styles are similar in all of my papers. I have taken the skills I learned from
my previous experiences of writing and improved them in this class. My liberal ideas that have been
embedded in my writing since high school are shown and reflected in multiple projects that I've
completed. Many of my grammatical errors began to stick out and I have since learned how to
correct them. English 1100 has helped me to correct grammatical errors that I had never noticed
before and has ultimately allowed me to discover why I write a particular way. I have improved my
writing habits through this class and have been able to enhance my skills to the best of my ability.
A common trend among my papers has been my sentence structure. For the most part, my sentences
would be short and very straight forward. A common mistake that I see among many of my peers is
writing consciously, a problem I do not have. I like that I can get right to the point which allowed
me to be more direct in stating my facts and less worried about filling my paper with fluff. By the
end of the semester, I learned to make my sentences more balanced which would allow me to have
more flow throughout my paper. As the semester went on I started to pay closer attention to the
length and the content of each sentence and how each correlated with each other. I took a skill I had

English Reflection
Growing up, English was always a struggle for me, I didn't like to read or write and, I always found
myself, especially trying to avoid reading at all costs. Up until first grade Spanish was all I knew, so
when I began school I had to learn the language everyone already knew, English. English scared me
and became difficult as I feared that I was falling behind in a subject I should have already know.
Soon I found out I was right, during the dreaded parent conferences where my parents were told I
was below reading and writing levels. My parents tried to encourage me write and read more but I
had no interest as at the time I felt that I was always gonna be behind in English no matter how hard
I tried. Later when I got high school things changed, I took an advanced English class just challenge
myself after that class, I continued with advanced placement courses as I knew it was time to change
my mentality. After high school when I tested into English 49, I became disappointed with my
results of finding out that I needed to take English 49, as I believed my writing skills were slightly
more developed. Today I am glad that I got the opportunity to take English 49 as with this course
this semester I have improved in structuring and organizing a five plus paragraph essay, in grammar
and punctuation and, in the analysis of an author's writing.

learning a new language there seems to be a bit of a debate as to how to go about it. One side of the

I think my main strength is that I like interacting with people. In my career thus far I have worked in
multi–disciplinary teams, made daily presentations and managed teams so working with people is
natural and comfortable for me. I'm friendly, inclusive and approachable. I think this is an asset that
will carry me far as a teacher. I have experienced teachers who were intimidating and I found it
detrimental to my learning. I want my students to feel comfortable to ask me anything, repeat

Grammar : Is It Important?
Grammar is in everyday life and people think that is not important at all. A majority of people
misuse grammar and they misuse it very badly. Grammar is very important in the way people see
other people. It is a very big part to how intelligent you seem or how respectful you seem too.
Grammar speaks a lot for someone's intelligence, especially for their career. In most cases
employers will not even hire someone if they do not show good enough grammar. (Tesh) Employers
will not hire them for this reason because it makes their companies look unprofessional, and they
need to be the top company in their field. "Just like we're judged by the way we present ourselves
physically, we're also judged by the words we use." (Tesh) Especially by their employers, they want
to make sure their workers look as professional as they can be. People often mistake grammar as
spelling mistakes, but there are so many different parts to it. Run on sentences, conjunctions, and the
wrong order of a sentence are just a few of the different parts to it. Probably the most common
grammar mistakes are confusing similar words with each other like there, they're, and their and your
and you're. So despite most people's thoughts, grammar is more than just learning how to spell. In
addition, grammar is just simply the thing that lays groundwork for daily communication. Improper
grammar can confuse the meaning of a conversation just like a phone line loaded with static.

Is Prescriptive Grammar Be Taught Correct?
Growing up, I never thought grammar or English would be important in the future. In Elementary
you were taught grammar from the English Curriculum of the state you are living in, but the real
question is; is the grammar you have been taught correct? According to Dennis Baron, "Teachers
reject such knowledge towards the simplistic language model they absorbed when they were in
school, a model that ignores the complexities of the language people use daily with a few
prescriptive rules that can be memorized and tested, but that have little connection with what
happens when we talk or write." In other words, Baron believes that English teachers are teaching
only one side of grammar, and it takes a toll on the students in schools nowadays. I agree with Baron
that some teachers are only focusing on how the prescriptive grammar is correct rather than
descriptive grammar. An example of my prescriptive learning is when I had English 10 at the high
school. My class was learning how to structure sentences. One of the rules was to never start a
sentence with the word "but". However according to Johnston, "The answer is yes. It is perfectly
acceptable to start sentences with the conjunctions and or but. However, it is slightly informal. If
formality is your goal, choose the more formal language." In this sentence, Johnston is saying it is
okay to start a sentence with the word "but" and or any conjunction at the beginning of a sentence if
you know how to correctly format the sentence.

The Evolution Of Grammar Instruction And Its Importance

  • 1. Grammar Is The Foundation Of The Majority Of Our Literary... Grammar is the foundation of the majority of our literary works throughout the years. Although as teaching styles evolve throughout time, the instruction of grammar should evolve as well. An article in The Atlantic, "The Wrong Way to Teach Grammar," by Michelle Navarre Cleary, touches base on how grammar lessons today should be learned through the use of creative writing rather than more traditional means of grammar instruction. Her article does well as she connects the reader logically and emotionally about how grammar hinders people's passion of English and writing. Although, I do believe that grammar can first be taught by more traditional means to understand how to use the skill and then later be applied through creative writing, rather than eliminating grammar lessons altogether. The author, Michelle Cleary, who is now an associate professor and dean at DePaul University is accredited with her professional writing skills. Before working at DePaul, she taught writing at a community college for eight years. However, the dropout rate at the community college was astoundingly at a 90 percent rate. She infers that one of the primary culprits for not finishing school was the required developmental writing classes with traditional grammar lessons. Ms. Cleary also mentions how students tell her these "grammar confessions" which would altogether have them avoid writing. Although grammar is not generally enjoyable to learn, it is helpful to learn and refresh the rules of grammar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Importance Of Proper Grammar : Why Bother Grammar is an important skill that is put into practice on a daily basis. Proper grammar is essential to understanding one's own language and for communication to happen between individuals who speak the same tongue. Grammar also lays the foundation for effective communication and if used improperly the message that wants to go through will loses its initial meaning. Grammar skills are of great importance, since they are useful in every aspect of life. Grammar is acquired even before a baby is born; therefore, grammar skills are equally important at home. Children learn their grammatical patterns through their immediate family, shaping their initial unconscious grammar. As children are old enough to attend school, they are required to learn the conscious grammar that is made up of rules. Proper grammar is a valuable tool for success, and like everything else, grammar follows a hierarchy of patterns that are essential for clarification, meaning, and intent of everyday communication. In the short article by Stephen Krashen, "Teaching Grammar: Why Bother," the author states that through research there is evidence that writing abilities and reading skills are related. The author goes on to say that those who read more, do better in their writing skills. Krashen argues that there is little need for "formal instruction in grammar" for those individuals who credit their reading skills responsible for their great writing skills. The article points out that while learning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Importance Of Communication Skills At Work Throughout the workplace communication and grammar is high–priority. Some bosses won't even hire people that don't have good grammar. In the WaPo article "Why Can't College Graduates Write Coherent Prose?', he states that good writers are hard to find these days and employers are in need of good writers. People fail to realize how important good communication skills are regardless of what career they are trying to pursue. Communication solves many problems and helps avoid confusion; good grammar and communication skills will set a better pathway to success. Grammar and communication at work is more critical than we think. Having good grammar will help us be better prepared to achieve our goals. While reading Susan Adam's article "Why Grammar Counts at Work", I picked up on a few of her main reasons why having good grammar at work is crucial. She states that having good grammar will prevent important writings from being static or dull. Another main reason was that good grammar will help manifest how organized one can be with their intentions and thoughts. She implies that we are most likely master our work if our sentences are organized and structured, which ties back to her original statement of organization helping with our intentions and thoughts. In addition to those reasons she gives us another reason why having good grammar is important, it will help avoid sloppy work. Bosses are looking for people who take notice of what they are writing down on paper; attention to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Grammar, History, Development And Prescriptive Grammar Introduction Do you think grammar is important? Do you know the function of grammar? Can you imagine living a life without grammar? Grammar is a set of rules for language. In this chapter, we will cover general ideas of grammar, including the definition, history, development, syntax, and how learners learn grammar. 3.1 Definition of Grammar Grammar is certainly a common word, it may be a boring subject to you or an explorative subject that you want to probe for. No matter what, grammar has been a long–established academic term and it is an imperative part of language. First, get to know the word 'grammar'. The term grammar is derived from the Greek word grammatikē, where gram meant something written. The part tikē is derived from technē and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Its content is rich and complex. It includes: 1) Syntax(how words are ordered to form sentences; study of different sentence types); 2) Morphology(how letters/sounds combine to make meaningful units); 3) Phonology(study of sounds/significant sounds (phonemes)); 4) Semantics(the study of meaning) and Pragmatics(how to understand other speakers' intended meaning) 3.1.1 Descriptive grammar and Prescriptive grammar One basic distinction of grammar is between Descriptive grammar and Prescriptive grammar. Descriptive grammar refers to the structure of a language as it is actually used by speakers and writers, it is from living language and up–to–date. The language in descriptive grammar is constantly changing, fluid and organic, it also describes reality from authentic data. Prescriptive grammar refers to the structure of a language as certain people (usually learned scholars) think it should be used, it emphasis on correctness. It is the unchanging set of rules, which is seen as the idealised 'perfection'. 3.1.2 Different Types of Grammar There are different varieties of grammar, which is the different ways of describing and analyzing the structures and functions of language. • 9. Is Google Making Us Stupid? In the last fifty years, technology has and is still advancing above and beyond every single year. Apple comes out with a new iPhone every year and new games or gadgets. We are using the internet for basically any question we have, to communicate with others or even promoting anything. Technology has taken over everything we do in our daily lives. As Carr concluded in his story " Is Google Making Us Stupid?", he stated "as we come to rely on computers to mediate our understanding of the world, it is our own intelligence that flattens into artificial intelligence." Carr 's conclusion is a very accurate statement of what our world is becoming. Future generations will be carried on like this, consumed with the social media and computers to decide what the world is and what they should think. I believe strongly that computers do influence us a lot of our thinking, and even lowering our intelligence. The more and more technology grows and keeps on doing things for us, is how we are creating this "artificial intelligence". Even my own use of computers can support this. I was born in 1998, I have seen the huge advancements with computers and cellphones. My first interaction and playing on a computer was at the age of 5 and I played on the Paint program and pinball. I loved playing it everyday. When we started using computers in school, I had to learn how to type and know the basics of computers. Now that I am 17, I simply cannot live without using the computer for homework and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Reflection Paper Ever since I was born, I was raised in a Vietnamese household where my parents and grandparents always communicated to me in only Vietnamese. Before I was four years old, I slowly learned English from watching television and listening American radio stations. In my elementary school, I learned the American alphabet by memorization and repetition of the sounds and signs of the American alphabet. Then teachers started to make students learn new vocabulary and helping students make flashcards with pictures for visual aid. To improve my communication skills in English, my teachers often made the students work in groups, so students can learn from each other and practice their speaking. English is all about memorization and then applying what I learned to other situations. During the summer, I went to extra English classes, and my summer school teachers emphasized the importance of vocabulary and grammar. I learned how to diagram sentences based on their parts of speech and memorized how certain phrases must correspond to a set of rule to satisfy the English grammar. My teachers in high school tested my English skills through public speeches and numerous essays. During high school, I also went to Vietnamese school for four years every Sunday where they emphasized the importance of memorization and repetition. My teachers gave me homework to read, and I had memorize certain poems or short stories. They would test me by making me recite the poem or write down the short stories by ... • 13. Difference Between Nature And Nurture In Language Nature and nurture both play significant roles in a child's development of language. Many scholars (such as Coulmas 1989 as cited in Christie, 2005) agree that the human brain is designed for language, yet they also state that it is learned because of relationships and interactions with those around them for example a child's parents (Christie, 2005). There are four major aspects of language development: phonology – the sound structure of speech, syntax – grammatical rules, semantics – meaning of words and phrases – and pragmatics – using language to communicate. Theorists and scholars alike have debated nature versus nurture for many years, however it's not nature or nurture but rather an interplay of the two creating a unique development of language for children (Caton, Brisbane, Australia). Phonological development is the ability to be able to identify individual sounds and combine them into spoken words. From three months, babies will start to recognise their parent's voices, and by four to seven months' babies will be able to recognise change in tone as well as respond to sounds such as music. As babies start to develop language they will start to form phonemes together e.g. mama, dada. The environment plays a big role in the early language development of a child, as the behaviourist perspective states children start to learn language through operant conditioning – repetition and imitation followed by positive reinforcement – and classical conditioning – children ... • 15. Grammar Translation Method And Communicative Language... A widely used method for language learning in Bangladeshi schools isGrammar TranslationMethod (GTM) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Grammar Translation Method is a very traditional methodand I think in more or less in all medium schools it is mainly used. When we visit two schools, teachers were also use Grammar Translation Method and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)for teaching the students. From my point of view, in our Bangladeshi culture especially beginner level of students need appropriate use of both native language (L1) and target language (L2) and for that reason Grammar Translation Method and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), both are suitable. Also in Asian part of the world the parents are very conscious about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Background: When the people of the western world wanted to know about the foreign languages like Greek and Latin the grammar translation method appeared. Grammatical rule, memorization of vocabulary, translation of the text was its focal point. In that time, the Latin language was generally based on structure and their main objective was to understand the fundamentals of grammar and translation. It was a hope that through the grammatical rule of the target language the student would know more about the grammatical rules of their native language and then, it would help them to speak and write in their native language better. So thinking about the objective of the language, the method came to be known as classical method. At present, it is very well known as the Grammar Translation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Semantics, Syntax, And Variation Of Language When one takes an advanced grammar course, they are in for a new vision of learning and understanding grammar. Most people are taught grammar as early as Elementary school, however, they only recognize grammar for its functions in the written language and not the true meanings it has on sentence structures and clauses. There are many views on the importance grammar usages. Different Linguist has different theories. The two main grammar usages that are discussed are Grammar Discourse and Cohesion. Linguistics is the study of the nature, structure, and variation of language that includes phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics ("Linguistics," n.d., p. 1). In Linguistics, discourse is defined as a unit of text described by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 124). Larger clauses that makeup of many sentences are considered linguistic items. Many books, stories, poems, and even lectures include linguistic items. Many clauses in a story make up language or utterances. Being able to distinguish the utterance in a lecture or story will help the listener identify if the material is complete or incomplete. Texts consist of longer sentences that would make it hard for the reader to clarify the subject in one sentence. Stages in narratives help the linguist point out the events in the story. The stages breakdown the settings, events, and resolution of the narrative. The structural scheme is identified, and all the stages of the narrative can be put into the correct order ("Test and Discourse," 2007, p. 7). Grammar and discourse can sometimes be two different types of communication, but they can compliment each other. Mira Ariel described grammar and discourse as " Grammar specifies a set of language codes and guides speakers on how to properly construct sentences, which are then conjoined by entirely different discourse principals into a coherent piece of discourse" (Ariel, 2009, p. 5). Not all texts are of equal value as some contains salient information that brings the story to its climax. Salient text consists of main–line verb clauses. Longacere calls this method of discourse salient system. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. The Importance Of Writing Badly By Bruce Ballenger The Importance of Writing Badly was written by Bruce Ballenger. His intended audience are students who are victims of strict English teachers as well as the strict English teachers, themselves. In his essay, Ballenger portrays that students are more focused on being grammatically correct than the message in their essays. This is because of teachers who grade strictly on grammar errors and punctuation. Ballenger says, "A colleague of mine, an Ivy League graduate, is among the self– appointed grammar police, complaining often about the dumb mistakes his students make in their papers. I don't remember him ever talking about what his students are trying to say in those papers." (Page 74). Bruce Ballenger has effectively argued and persuaded his intended audience with his use of ethos, pathos, and logos. Ballenger has a huge credibility. He is an English professor at a university. Ballenger must grade his own students' essays, which helps build his reputation; also, he has gone through experiences where teachers graded his essays only on his errors. Ballenger tells how he had a teacher back in grade school named Mrs. O'Neill; his teacher would not be patient when it came to an incorrect sentence. (Page 73). He understands why his students are stricken with fear when it comes to trying to get their essays "perfect" for their teacher. Ballenger said, "Many of my students come to me similarly voiceless, dreading the first writing assignment because they mistakenly believe that how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Grammar is affected by the dialect that a person speaks. I have chosen the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins to focus on various grammar topics and build a better understanding of some topics. This book is one that examines the life of families in twelve districts, all of which are currently living their lives at different paces and in different styles. Twice a year two people are chosen to come forward and attend the "Hunger Games", in which each person must basically fight to their death. Grammar instruction starts with young children and extends all the way through college, because it is a key part of writing and reading instruction. Grammar as part of writing instruction is important because if you, as the writer, do not correctly write a sentence then the sentence is not going to make any sense. Not only is this going to affect the sentence itself, but also it is going to affect the entire paper. • 23. Strengths And Weaknesses Of Audio Lingual Method Nowadays, although teaching and learning English has constantly changed, the Audio–Lingual Method still plays a significant role in many English classes around the world. According to Larsen– Freeman (2000), the Audio–Lingual Method was developed from an interesting idea that behavioral psychology and linguistic conventions are closely related to each other. Thus, this method aims to enhance learners' ability by overlearn and habit formation. The goal of this method is to help the students to be able to communicate in the target language. In order to achieve this purpose, the Audio–Lingual Method contains the following characteristics. Firstly, contextualized dialogs are utilized to present new vocabulary and structures in class. Secondly, the conversations are learned through drills which are considered as an integral part of the Audio–Lingual Method. Language Acquisition : Learning A New Language Anna Christine Navaja Language Acquisition Final Project 12/10/14 Bilinguals and Monolinguals In today's society, it is essential that one knows more than one language to be very well qualified in acquiring jobs. However, learning a new language is not an easy task. One must be dedicated and be fully immersed to be fluent at it later on. There are certain grammatical rules that exists in one language but not in the others. Grammatical gender, for an example, is present in various languages around the world, including German. In the other hand, there is the English language which does not possess the use of gender grammar, specifically definitive article "the" and indefinite articles "a/an" in English, and "der/die/das" and "ein/einer/ein" in German. Der/ein is the gender grammar for masculine words, die/einer for feminine, and das/ein for neutral. However, these article could change depending if the sentence is describing the noun being presented is either genitive, dative, or accusative, turning them to either des/dem/den or eines/einem/einen. Despite such complex article rule, German and English are both Indo–European languages that have several cognate words, which could be beneficial for English speakers learning the language.Another interesting idea is whether bilinguals of English and Tagalog, which is an Austronesian language, would have such limitation in being fluent to the third language because of the article rules. • 29. Importance of Grammar Essay A. Introduction It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching. Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that "language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified" (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own significance as it helps students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Evaluation of Miss Wong's Teaching Approach B(1). Teaching philosophy It is teachers' beliefs rather than their knowledge that have a greater influence on their instruction (William & Burden, 2000). Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers' beliefs about learners: resisters, receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers. Unlike the first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners' active involvement (as cited in William & Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong's teaching approach, a PPP model (i.e., Presentation, Practice and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target grammatical structure of passive voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher's answer checking. However, it seems the final production step is omitted, resulting in students' lacking opportunities to apply the knowledge into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss Wong tends to regard her students as receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits. What the instruction concerns is whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or vice verse from a structural level, which is a typical example of a ... Today, formal grammar is essential in our academic careers, requiring us to write concise and professional assignments in order to exercise creativity and leave impressions on instructors. Although, the effectiveness of the explicit instruction of formal grammar is still under speculation; even individuals from academic and research backgrounds are skeptic about whether explicit formal grammar instruction is effective at all. Although, it sounds only nonsensical to even consider abolishing this instructional method, for why should learning grammar be based on one's own knowledge of it? Why should the student's initial experience with grammar be deemed as more important than proper instruction? The explicit instruction of formal grammar in society is necessary, for the consequences of removing this practice can prevent core grammar from being taught in the first place; also, even if other methods would prove more effective, applying this would be too much of a risk, and ultimately keep students from discovering talents, and make it more difficult for foreign students to learn English as a second language. The debate about grammar instruction does not entail whether grammar should be taught, but rather how it should be taught. • 39. The Essential Preparation For Life And Career Ancient and medieval authors believed that the seven liberal arts were propaedeutic to the study of all topics and matters. Their belief remains evident in our school systems, as many universities and colleges focus on providing a liberal arts education. In fact, the Dedman College at Southern Methodist University mentions the importance of a liberal arts education in their mission statement, as it is the "essential preparation for life and career". The understanding of the seven liberal arts inspires a broader and more focused study of materials often discussed in classes. Five of the seven liberal arts can be directly applied to the study of Rural Matters. An understanding of geometry, arithmetic, and astronomy is essential in gaining a deeper capacity for Rural Matters. Through Isidore of Seville's Etymologies, we gain the understanding that without logic and grammar we would not be able to appropriately discuss rural matters. Isidore of Seville begins book seventeen of Etymologies, as he normally does, with the author and creator of the topic at hand. Isidore of Seville acknowledges the uncertainty of the creator by listing the different possibilities. According to the Greeks, Hesiod of Boeotia was the first to make skill in writing on rural matters a part of the liberal education. According to the Romans, Cato was the first to treat agriculture, Marcus Terence was the first to refine its study and Vergil exalted it with the skill of his poetry (PAGE). Isidore explains ... On the top of that list is the evolution of the English Renaissance which is often referred to as the "Elizabethan Era" or the "Age of Shakespeare" after the most significant monarch and notable dramatist of that memorable era. • 55. Teaching Grammar In Context Essay The study of grammar all by itself would not necessarily make the learner a better writer or speaker. However, by gaining a clearer understanding of how the language works, the learner should be able to gain greater control over the way he shapes words into sentences and sentences into paragraphs. In short, studying grammar may help learners to perceive the structures of the language effectively. Larsen–Freeman (2001) as cited in Mart (2013), describes grammar as a system of meaningful structures and patterns that are governed by particular pragmatic constraints. This clearly indicates that grammar plays a crucial role in learning the target language. For instance, as a learner, I also prefer the context–based method as it is much easier for me to understand the concept of the grammar itself. Teaching grammar in isolated sentences is not going to help the learners because they cannot see the relationship between the grammatical concepts through a logical context. In my career thus far I have worked in multi–disciplinary teams, made daily presentations and managed teams so working with people is natural and comfortable for me. I'm friendly, inclusive and approachable. I think this is an asset that will carry me far as a teacher. I have experienced teachers who were intimidating and I found it detrimental to my learning. I want my students to feel comfortable to ask me anything, repeat anything, or explain anything. I think that as time progresses in the classroom I'll be able to develop good relationships with the students where they feel safe and uninhibited. I am naturally and ... This is a very unnatural communication for me so to be able to smoothly incorporate this skill into my teaching would be a triumph for me. All of the teachers have a very calm, confident and charming disposition, which pervades the classroom. They are clearly highly skilled and experienced, which generates trust. I think these qualities are fundamental for effective learning. These qualities seem to be intrinsic to the instructors but I'm hoping that over time I will ripen or at least acquire the ability to convey a fraction of this demeanour. C. When I have completed my CELTA training I will be just at the beginning of my career so continuing professional development will be paramount to consolidate what I've learned so far, keep my skills up to date, learn new and different techniques from other teachers and experts, and keep abreast of industry trends. I love learning and developing myself and regularly take classes, workshops and courses for fun and personal development as well as career development, so I am highly motivated to continue my ELT development. • 73. Grammar : Is It Important? Grammar is in everyday life and people think that is not important at all. A majority of people misuse grammar and they misuse it very badly. Grammar is very important in the way people see other people. It is a very big part to how intelligent you seem or how respectful you seem too. Grammar speaks a lot for someone's intelligence, especially for their career. In most cases employers will not even hire someone if they do not show good enough grammar. (Tesh) Employers will not hire them for this reason because it makes their companies look unprofessional, and they need to be the top company in their field. "Just like we're judged by the way we present ourselves physically, we're also judged by the words we use." (Tesh) Especially by their employers, they want to make sure their workers look as professional as they can be. People often mistake grammar as spelling mistakes, but there are so many different parts to it. Run on sentences, conjunctions, and the wrong order of a sentence are just a few of the different parts to it. Probably the most common grammar mistakes are confusing similar words with each other like there, they're, and their and your and you're. So despite most people's thoughts, grammar is more than just learning how to spell. In addition, grammar is just simply the thing that lays groundwork for daily communication. Improper grammar can confuse the meaning of a conversation just like a phone line loaded with static. (Johnson) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Feeling my ears and face turn stop sign red with the sense of the walls closing in, I began to sweat. "Ppp, puh, puh," I stuttered. Mrs. Wright sternly announces, "Photograph." In my monotone voice, I repeated her and continued on with the rest of the paragraph, which bared less challenging words for a second grader. She then asked me what I thought about the paragraph after I finished reading it. I told her and the whole class, I don't know. I could hear snickering all around me, and did the only thing left for me to do. I sank deep into my chair, praying for her to move on. She proceeded to explain the context of the paragraph to the class, before she selected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yes, they would poke fun at me if I misspelled words or wrote about my love life. That alone was reason to write a somewhat well–organized letter. The day Mr. Peters read a letter written to me, aloud, was the day I realized how important it is to make sure what I write conveys the accurate message. He read, "I want to have you come for a long time and maybe dinner. How about meeting at the fair around 6pm?" My friend and I died. Everyone had fun with that letter for several months. I believe that event impacted both of our writing skills and revealed how important it is to make sure the message you want to convey is being interpreted the way it is intended. I managed to get through grammar school with the basic necessities required to graduate. I was not one of those kids that had interactive parents that read to me as a child and I was not pressed to go to college. I joined the workforce right after high school. I had a very strong work ethic and knew that I had to work very hard to climb the latter in order to gain financial stability. Within that hard work was the ability to communicate with my superiors and my subordinates. • 77. Is Prescriptive Grammar Be Taught Correct? Growing up, I never thought grammar or English would be important in the future. In Elementary you were taught grammar from the English Curriculum of the state you are living in, but the real question is; is the grammar you have been taught correct? According to Dennis Baron, "Teachers reject such knowledge towards the simplistic language model they absorbed when they were in school, a model that ignores the complexities of the language people use daily with a few prescriptive rules that can be memorized and tested, but that have little connection with what happens when we talk or write." In other words, Baron believes that English teachers are teaching only one side of grammar, and it takes a toll on the students in schools nowadays. I agree with Baron that some teachers are only focusing on how the prescriptive grammar is correct rather than descriptive grammar. An example of my prescriptive learning is when I had English 10 at the high school. My class was learning how to structure sentences. One of the rules was to never start a sentence with the word "but". However according to Johnston, "The answer is yes. It is perfectly acceptable to start sentences with the conjunctions and or but. However, it is slightly informal. If formality is your goal, choose the more formal language." In this sentence, Johnston is saying it is okay to start a sentence with the word "but" and or any conjunction at the beginning of a sentence if you know how to correctly format the sentence. ...
