GRADE 9
Volunteers will be picking a
slip of paper containing an
– ing word. S/he will act it
out to let their classmates
guess the action word.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students
should be able to:
1. Give the meaning of gerund
2. Identify the gerund and its uses in
given sentences
3. Use verbals in the form of gerunds in
making observations about pictures
shown to them

A gerund is usually defined as a
word ending in -ing that is
formed from a verb as a noun
specifically used as a subject, a
subject complement, an object of
the preposition, a direct object,
and an appositive.
• A gerund subject is a verb
form that functions as a
noun and acts as the
subject of a sentence.
• Gerund subjects are commonly
used to express general activities,
hobbies, or concepts. They help in
emphasizing the action or activity
as the central focus of the
sentence.
• Running is good for your
health.
• Swimming is her favorite sport.
• Writing requires creativity and
practice.
• A gerund as a subject
complement is a word or
phrase that follows a
linking verb and describes
or identifies the subject.
• LINGKING VERBS: are, is,
• Generosity is giving more than
you can.
• Pride is taking less than you need.
• What I really like is travelling to
other countries.
• Object of the
preposition is usually
(but not always) the
noun or pronoun
immediately to the
 PREPOSITION: a word (usually
a short word) that shows the
relationship between two
other nearby words. For
example, from. for, at, in,
on, about, etc.
 Leslie got into trouble for
talking to Sarah.
 Have you ever read a book about
riding a bike?
 Upon finding a piece of glass
on the floor, Jan called the
teacher.
• Gerunds can work as direct
objects in a sentence.
Direct objects are words
or phrases that receive
the actions performed by
the verb.
 Example: My dog likes napping.
In this sentence, the gerund
“napping” tells us what the dog
likes. “Napping” receives the
action of “likes.” What does the
dog like? The dog likes napping.
• I love pretending that I’m
okay.
• I enjoy cooking with my
mom.
• Mark likes playing on the
• Gerund as an
appositive is a noun
or a noun phrase that
renames another noun.
• When a gerund phrase
functions as an
appositive, there must be
a comma before and after
the gerund phrase.
• In addition, gerunds
act as appositives by
giving more information
about the noun.
