15. BASES
• A base is a
substance that
neutralises
acids. When
bases are added
to water, they
split to form
hydroxide ions.
16. ACTIVITY PROCEDURE
1. Use litmus paper to test for an acid and base
substance.
2. Dip a piece of blue litmus paper into the liquid.
If the paper turns red, the liquid is an acid.
3. If the paper remains blue, the liquid is a base.
4. Make column A (acid) and column B (base)
then write your answers on one whole sheet of
paper.
5. Then, write your observation.
17. REMINDERS!
• Work silently.
• You have 10 minutes to do that,
everyone must participate in the
activity.
• After 10 minutes, we will check
your work.
18. CLASIFICATION OF ACID AND BASE
• We can say that a substance is acid,
when the blue litmus paper dips into
the liquid and turns red it is an acid.
• We can say that a substance is a base
when the blue litmus paper dips into
the liquid and remains blue, the liquid
is base.
