2. Book Summary Of The Bell Jar By Sylvia Plath
Book Summary. The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath was published in 1963. It is an
autobiography that is said by some to correspond to the author s life. Throughout
this research paper, I fully agree that this is an autobiography of Plath s life, but
will get into why further into the paper. With this in mind, the protagonist, Esther
Greenwood, travels from Massachusetts to New York as a guest editor for a
magazine. Esther loves poetry. Knowing this, Esther is staying with eleven other
girls at a hotel who are in the same magazine as she is. When first reading that
Esther was from Massachusetts and travels to New York, I felt as though I could
almost be her because of how close our states are, as well as a similar experience I
went through with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then, later on in the novel shows what s really going on in Esther s head in regards
to her sexual nature. Esther doesn t really want to have sex at first because she
doesn t want to get pregnant. Later on, though, she wants to get birth control, even
though this novel is set during a time where birth control is not so common. On
the same topic, Esther also almost gets raped by a man named Marco on the last
night in the city. Esther also gets betrayed by her college boyfriend, Buddy during
the novel who had sexual relations with another woman while dating Esther. With
this said, Esther just wanted to have sex with someone afterwards. After these
scenes, as well as others that will be mentioned shortly, Esther does not know if
she should go after her ambition of poetry, or to keep trying to be more like the
girls in her group and get married. (Sparknotes) Going off of this, Buddy wants to
marry Esther when he gets better from his tuberculosis outbreak. I feel as though
people who are looking at Buddy from the outside think he would be the perfect
person to marry because of his looks, brains, and how ambitious he is. However,
for Esther, he does not understand why she wants to write poetry. I can totally
relate to this part of Esther s life, however, because I had a boyfriend in my past
who everyone thought was tall, dark, and handsome. They thought he was the
kindest and smartest man alive. On the flip side, he was only good for his looks . His
personality was deadly,
3. The Legacy Of A Good President
On April 7, 2015, Rand Paul announced, I am running for president to return our
country to the principles of liberty and limited government. This put him in the
running for the 2016 presidential nomination. Rand Paul is a republican and the
son of Ron Paul, Rand Paul started his political career in 2008 when he started to
get involved in a group known as the Tea Party. He announced he would run for a
seat in the Kentucky Senate in 2009, He won and became a senator for Kentucky. He
has been a United Statessenator for five years which doesn t give him many years of

Paul states, I am not opposed to birth control, he said. After a pause, he elaborated.
That s basically what Plan B is. Plan B is taking two birth control pills in the
morning and two in the evening, and I am not opposed to that. This means he
agrees with the morning after pill. He disagrees with government funding for
abortion. He signed a no taxpayer funding for abortion act. The act prohibits
federal funds being used to cover abortion but excludes in cases such as rape, incest,
or if a woman is in danger of death. It also disqualifies for purpose of tax deduction of
medical expenses for abortion. Paul wants to defend Planned Parenthood.
Taxes in this country help pay for many government and state programs. Right now
we have seven tax bracket tax plan for income tax. The plan is based on how much
you make, the more you make the higher the present. Paul s plan calls for a
fourteen point five present flat tax no matter how much income you make. The plan
also includes a $15000 deduction and a $5000 per a person personal exemption.
Retirements accounts would stay the same and still keep mortgage and charitable
deductions along with child tax deductions. For business, it would be a fourteen
point nine percent business transfer tax that would be levied on factors of
production and capital income. The TGM (Taxes and Growth Model) estimates an
increased GDP of twelve point nine percent in ten years or about one
4. Two Kinds Mother
As we grow up, our mothers have played a significant impact on who we will
become in our life. Our mothers have been there for us when it seems that our world
are crumbling, when we are feeling sick with a stomach bug, but most importantly,
our mothers will always be there when we need them the most. In Two Kinds by Amy
Tan, it starts out with a motherwho only wants to live the American Dream. After
losing her familyin China, she comes to America with her daughter with the hopes
of reclaiming the loss of her family through the eyes of her daughter. As a little girl
Ni kan does as her mother dreams of but as the daughter get older she become
disobedient towards her mother. In the beginning, Ni Kan became just as excited as
her mother, maybe even more so at the idea of her becoming a prodigy (Tan, 223).
She could imagine herself with many different talents and she felt that once she
became perfect, (Tan, 223) her parents will never be disappointed with her.
Unfortunately, her mother has become so demanding of her that she is forced to take
daily tests at home. Ni Kan tells of the tests are harder multiplying numbers in my
head without using my hands, predicting the daily temperature in Los Angeles, New
York, and London (Tan, 223). Ultimately, her mother talked her into taking piano
lessons, this became the mother s center of her judgement. As the story continues to
reveal the many conflicts between mother and daughter. Ni Kan explains of the
enormous amount of pressure her mother was putting on her to become a prodigy.

5. The Policy Design For Recreational Cannabis Model
The picture is quite complex and at odds with federal legislation, posing a major
challenge in terms of public policy design, implementation and evaluation. In the
next sections, for analytical purposes, the policy cycle will be divided in two major
models: the legalization for recreational purposes (4 states) and legalization for
medical purposes (in all of its forms) (33 cases).
3.Design stage
3.1Policy design for recreational cannabis model
The main goal pursued by the legalization policies is to convert marijuana in a
tradable commodity, under similar conditions and treatment given to alcohol and
tobacco. In this sense, the policy approach is mainly directed to market development.
The full legalization of cannabis in Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska (as
well as the district of Columbia), is a recent phenomenon that started in 2012. In
all cases the process was triggered by ballot system, following the path inaugurated
by California in 1996 where the medical use of cannabis was approved (Anderson
and Rees, 2014). However, in some states like Oregon and Alaska, the process have
started earlier with two previous failed attempts, where the same proposition was
defeated by ballot system.
The political and civic platform for the full legalization was largely supported by
national activists groups such as NORML, the Marijuana Policy Project, Drug Policy
Alliance and wide networks of scientific and medical communities, human rights
activists, civil rights

Michelle...
Children look up to parents as their role models and influencers, however
sometimes they do not fulfill these roles. Goodnight Mister Tom is a novel set in
England in 1939 at the start of World War 2. The author, Michelle Magorian, tells a
story through this world event about a young child who is evacuated to the country
at the anticipation of the war. The child, William Beech, is sent away by his abusive
mother in London to the small country town of Little Weirwold to live with a
stranger, Tom Oakley. Magorian uses this to demonstrate the impact of the behaviour
of parental figures on a growing child. This is explored through the characteristics of
Mrs Beech and Mr Tom, how they are compared and contrasted and the effects of

The baby was described as smelly and she had tape on her mouth to stop her from
trying to get attention as Mrs Beech claimed that the baby also needed to learn
discipline. She also has a warped view of Will and the kind of person he is, shown
when he brings home gifts from Little Weirwold and she accuses him of begging
for it or stealing it. She also accuses Will of being full of sin although it is obvious
that he is polite and kind to others. When Will came back from the country healthier
and more confident than she remembered, she believed that she had to silence him
into obedience and was scared that he had threatened her authority . We can see that
she is very insecure about her role in society and as a mother. Mrs Beech is a bad
parent is clearly unfit for bringing up children.
Tom Oakley is a kind man who cares for and loves Will and is a positive role model
for him. He is a healthy, strong old man who lives in the country town of Little
Weirwold. The description of Tom s physical appearance already tells us that he can
take care of himself and is probably more reliable as a parent figure. William Beech
ends up being placed in his care when he is evacuated from London. Tom lives in a
graveyard near a church, and is only asked to care for Will because of this. It is
revealed that Tom lives where he does because his dead wife and child are buried
there and he has a hard time letting go of them. Ironically, his child was also called
William. Mr Tom

judicial conduct commissioner. Your previous career was a legal academic, you had

novel, several themes emerge. As entailed in the title, the earth is definitely the
central theme in the novel. Wang Lung s ascent from privation to riches, diligent
peasant to wealthy landowner, is a direct result of countless hours meticulously

Religion and good fortune are also exhibited throughout the book. Wang Lung s
religious beliefs are a combination of different traditions. Because of his farming
roots, he burns incense in the fields before the two small gods to bring fortune to
the lands and to his family. But he also asks the goddess of mercy to give his
daughter in law son so he could get a new robe. He praises the gods when his
fortunes are rising and also finds fault in them when misfortunes arise. Wang Lung
is also superstitious and is a believer of omens. He also shows approbation for the
Confucian ideals of family docility and is appreciative when his son stands an
ancestral shrine in their home. As well as this, he gives donations to both Buddhist
and Taoist temples when his first son was born. Wang Lung and O Lan are overall
good people. Several actions arise within the novel which challenge the ethics in
which they live by. Infanticide, thieving, drug commercialism, and slavery all
question the codes of morality in China. Through this book we learn that there are
extreme cultural differences between ours and that of Wang Lung s. An additional
theme portrayed is wealth as the destroyer of traditional values. As Wang Lung s
fortunes rise, he becomes more and more similar to the Hwang family, whose fall is
the reason for his own rise. As his wealth increases, he is able to hire more workers,
an becomes obsessed with women
10. Analysis Of Happy Days And The Carmichael Show
SACE Stage 2 English: External Assessment: Comparative Analysis
Happy Days and The Carmichael Show
Sitcoms have existed ever since television was introduced to the family home, and
continue to evolve along with television and society itself. Traditionally, sitcoms were
centred around men, usually having only one or two female characters, however over
time, societal changes and movements have drastically changed the way sitcoms have
been presented to the public. Happy Days was produced in the 1970s; portraying the
traditional 50s white American family. The 50s were a time recognised for being post
World War II, the beginning desegregation, the rise of Rock N Roll as well as a

Each of the sitcoms both have easily identifiable sets, such as the Cunningham
home or diner in Happy Days or The Carmichael home in The Carmichael Show.
These sets work in conjunction with a catchy theme song that allows viewers to
instantly recognise the sitcom that is playing. Each of the episodes are self
contained, meaning that the sitcoms had moved from conflict to resolution by the
end of each episode. Humour plays a key role in the sitcoms, this humour is
mostly character driven; one liners at another character s expense. Occasionally,
there will be running jokes concerning a character s personality, flaws or
disposition. Each of these sitcoms also presents certain character archetypes.
These include the wise cracker, the bully/charmer, dork, goofball and the square.
The wise cracker is someone that lives to make fun of the other characters on the
show; this archetype can be related to Jerrod from The Carmichael Show and
Howard Cunningham from Happy Days. The bully/charmer has a rough exterior
although they are generally good natured at the core; this relates to Fonzie and
Bobby s ex wife Nekeisha. The square is typically the main protagonist of the
sitcom, this individual is slightly nerdy and a lot of the sitcoms comedy comes from
how they react to certain situations. Maxine is the square, as a result of her very
wealthy background she frequently acts out in

make his point. He talks about his childhood neighborhood in Chicago where he

neighborhood he desperately wanted the approval of the older hood guys but they
didn t like book smarts . For example, he states that ...it was not at all good to be
book smart. The hoods would turn on you (Pg.246) This shows that although Graff
was intellectual he was scared to show it because he wanted the approval of the
hoods. This is important because this would keep him from doing well in school
because of his life outside of class. Although if teachers approach teaching in a

Another example is when Graff states how he ...carefully hiding telltale marks of

when they grow older they ll have no shame on knowing more and the approval of

Charlie Chaplin The Gold Rush , is a silent comedic film about going after the
American dream and the hardships one must endure while trying to survive against
all odds. As usual Chaplin plays his famous character , the tramp , a dim witted under
dog. He is a lone prospector who falls in love with a dance hall girl. Chaplin
effectively used mise en scene for cinematic communication in server scenes in this

18. An Effective Treatment of Kidney Failure Essay
An Effective Treatment of Kidney Failure
The kidney can fail for many reasons, when it does it leaves the sufferer with an
inability to filter out harmful substances in the blood. This leads to a number of
symptoms.
The first treatment for kidney failure would normally be dialysis, there are two
techniques.
Haemodialysis cleans blood outside the body by using a pump to pump out the
blood and through a dialyser. This filters out the blood via diffusion and pumps the
clean blood back around the body to pick up more toxins and back to the dialyser. It
also takes out the excess water, this is called ultrafiltation. It needs to be done for
four hours, three times a week. Peritoneal dialysis ... Show more content on

There can be problems with fluid leaks in the groin or around the catheter when
dialysis starts. Infections are the major risk either in the exit site or most importantly
in the tummy itself, peritonitis. In the long term, there can be a thickening of the
peritoneal membrane so that it does not work efficiently. The dialysis fluid may need
to be changed or switched to haemodialysis.
The treatment of dialysis is used in conjunction with a special diet that has to be
customized to each individual. Because the kidney takes away so many different
toxins from the blood it is important to have regular blood tests to see what is
missing from the diet. Medication is also a big factor in treating kidney failure; once
it is established what is missing, drugs can be given to help

The power of government to take private property for public use is known as eminent
domain, which may be found in the 5th amendment of the Constitution. Various
positive impacts come out of using eminent domain, such as new roads, schools, and

family homes would be demolished from this type of governmentpolicy. I believe that
eminent domain should only be used for public uses and not the advantages of taking

healthier when they have a higher self esteem; thus making negative people/ones
with low self esteem less healthy. Ever hear that stress wears down the body? It s
absolutely true! Stressing can cause problems and produces fear and anxiety. Stress
can grow a resistance to disease and can slowly decrease your health.
Sigmund Freud, 1856 1939, was an MD who specialized in neurology. Mental and

The four stages of the business cycle are complex phases that our economy

In the recovery, the economy is growing. It is commonly indicated by a bull

business cycle. Often,
28. Heidegger The Question Concerning Technology Analysis
Upon reading The Question Concerning Technology, it is evident that the essence of
technology is not referring to a piece of technology (e.g. computers, smartphones,
televisions). In fact, Heidegger reveals that it is precisely in thinking of the essence
of technology as merely the idea of a gadget or contraption that prevents one from
fully comprehending the essence of technology. Through phenomenology, Heidegger
reveals that the true essence of technology is Enframing or a type of destining, that
challenges forth man to reveal beings as standing reserves that must be placed into
order ready for use or calculation. This concept is key to understanding the essence of
technology and its implications for man s relation to the essence of technology....

This means that throughout history, man has constantly made decisions which have
contributed to our understanding of Being. Changes of our understanding of Being
have occurred and will occur where things are now and through experience we learn
what the ontic can be or becoming. This revealing is not static, but fluid. One may
imagine taking a smartphone into the past, where man may not understand it as
something, yet in the modern world we understand it as something. It was
concealed, and now it is revealed. However, the smartphone was not a product of an
epiphany, but a work of history which only prompted contemporary man to reveal
this thing as a smartphone. The compounding knowledge of the past, or man s
evolving understanding for the possibility of Being is precisely what led to
technology. It starts [contemporary] man upon a way of revealing things as
something; it is a transcending occurrence. Past ways that man has revealed the truth
of beings puts a claim on the contemporary man to either grant that the same way of
revealing continues or that a new way is allowed to come to pass; this is destining.

A utopia is a fascination, a wonder. The façade of a utopia revolves around an
individual s perception of what is right in the world. In The Lathe of Heaven, Ursula
K. LeGuin argues that humans must find balance by not tampering with knowledge
beyond our scope. Although she makes it clear that a utopia is unattainable, she
argues that a life of inaction will lead us to a calmer and more utopian society.
However, I disagree with this argument because it inhibits the possibilities of human
advancement and undermines human nature. The hope of human advancement is
what keeps people striving to make the next great breakthrough and to better
understand the complexities of the universe. Although LeGuin makes a salient point
that humans should not... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humans are born with an innate desire to learn and create. Throughout Lathe of
Heaven we see this instinctual desire to better understand their environment and
improve it in all characters. For example, George Orr questions what Haber is doing
to him but suppresses his curiosity. His passive nature undermines his curiosity and
leads him to become more anxious and unknowingly submit himself to Haber s
desires. It is not until he takes actions and seeks a legal advisor that he is more
informed and understands his environment better. His desire to learn is what helped
Orr better understand where Haber s priorities lie. This learning led him to take
action, and without it he would have continued to mindlessly be used by Haber. Here,
Orr illuminates that the phenomenon that is human curiosity is there for a greater
purpose, is a part of nature, and is not meant to be suppressed. The latter proves that
LeGuin s argument is paradoxical and therefore ineffective because she encourages
her audience to refrain from tampering with nature, yet human curiosity is a part of
nature and all the actions humanity has taken stem from human curiosity. To suppress
human curiosity is to defy nature. The fact that we are the most advanced species on
earth and have an innate curiosity is not a coincidence, these two combined equate to
our purpose and our inner desire; to take action and to interact with our environment.
Those who side with LeGuin may argue that this negatively disrupts the natural order
of the world, however, the natural way of things has made it so that humans are the
most advanced species; the only logical explanation for this is that humans are meant
to take action for the greater good of the human

Shutter Island tells the story about Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshall sent to
investigate the disappearance of one patient from a highly secure psychiatric
facility. The story is told through Teddy s eyes, where a first person narrator is
presented right off the bet, creating disbelief to Teddy as a reliable narrator; mixed
with the themes retained by classic noir, the story is twisted, altered and the audience,
as a result, is left manipulated. It is the unreliable narrator that makes the story so
intriguing, leaving viewers doubting their perspective of reality and the truth
presented, as the protagonist does making narration an integral part of both movies
that are going to be analyzed. By combining elements of traditional film noir with
contemporary themes, neo noir explores conflicted antiheroes, trapped in a difficult
situation and making choices out of desperation or moral nihilism. Memento
follows the story of Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), a man who suffers from

what is told to him and relies solely on tattooed messages and photographs. This

Role of Women in Edmund Spenser s The Faerie Queene
Edmund Spenser in his epic romance, The Faerie Queene, invents and depicts a
wide array of female figures. Some of these women, such as Una and Caelia, are
generally shown as faithful, virtuous and overall lovely creatures. Other feminine
characters, such as Errour, Pride, and Duessa are false, lecherous and evil. This
might seem to be the end of Spenser s categorization of women; that they are either
good or bad. Yet upon closer examination one finds that Spenser seems to be
struggling to portray women more honestly, to depict the complex reality of woman
(Berger, 92). Spenser does not simply idealize women or the feminine viewpoint as

With Una s encouragement and guidance Redcrosse is able to free himself from
Errour s grasp and slay the snake creature. Again in the third canto, Spenser

control of her various situations, and that Spenser is depicting women as being
capable of being both beautiful and chaste as well as strong and confident.
Una is also portrayed with a religious power as she is a spiritual guide for
Redcrosse. Redcrosse s chief faults are a weak faith and a corresponding excessive
confidence in his own virtue (Broaddus, 9). Redcrosse in turn relies almost
completely on Una to guide him on the righteous path. As Una and Redcrosse begin
their journey together, Redcrosse lustily pricks across the plains, while Una takes the
more spiritually appropriate, and slower, transportation. Spenser writes of Una:
A lovely Ladie rode him faire beside,
Upon a lowly Asse more white then snow,
Yet she much whiter, but the same did hide
Under a vele, that wimpled was full

Maria Theresa reigned for 40 years and Frederick the Great reigned for 46 years.
Frederick the Great was extremely tolerant of other religions, but favored
Protestantism while Maria Theresa was Roman Catholic. Maria Theresa had 16

experienced a traumatic childhood because his father abused him. Frederick the
Great was known for his military victories while Maria Theresa was not. She did
however, strengthen the army.
15. Maria Theresa and Frederick the Great were fighting over Silesia in 1740 which

43. Persuasive Essay On Banning Campus Violence
Banning Campus Violence The results of the illegal actions performed by the campus
members lead to the increasing number of victims of the violence at campus. The
paper investigates the necessity to elaborate the necessary measures and methods to
stimulate the process of reducing and further banning of the violence on campus. The
essence of this approach is on the reasons, which should motivate the education
institutions management to reduce the number of cases of violence on campus.
Therefore, the essential measure to ban the campus violence is the establishment of
the legal framework and controlling procedure over the students members of the
campusesas the cases of the violent actions have recently become frequent enough
and lead to the negative consequences for the students health and life. However, not
all the scholars have a conviction that there is a need to fight for the ban of violence
on campuses. The audience of this paper can be diverse: from the students to the
employees of the educational institutions. The paper s structure applies the appeals
of ethos, pathos, and logos to make the reader s perception of the problem more
serious and profound. The paper comprises the statistics of the violent actions on
campus which serve as a consequence of alcohol and drug abuse by the students as
well as the results of the lack of the gun control. Hence, the research given represents
a set of reasons, arguments, and counterarguments in terms of the campus violence
banning

What seems a simple solution, may not always be so simple. In the short story We

surgery which then cures his cancer. The procedure was successful, and then
caught on with other people. This resulted in cannibalism. In today s society
people are always producing quick fixes to short term problems. Martel uses this
short story to comment on society s way of being quick to jump on new ideas, and
how this only creates larger problems that people don t take responsibility for. In
today s world, new things are being introduced in order to better our society. People
are constantly trying to find quick fixes to the seemingly easy problems that come up.

This paper takes a look at the King of Thailand s philosophy of Sufficiency Economy
which contains a Buddhist belief that stresses the middle path as a prime principle for
proper conduct by all levels of the population. Its application begins from the level of
individuals and families through to communities and the nation itself in terms of
development and administration. Thailandwas well known for its agricultural
commodities and being one of the world s top rice exporters despite being a
developing country faced with challenges such as economic growth and poverty. The
World Bank coined Thailand as the fastest emerging economy during the latter part of
the 1980 s where growth was stimulated by foreign and domestic investment and

The National Education Act 1999 and the Constitution of the Kingdom 1997 urged
for a reform in education and significant changes were made to all levels of
education nationally. The reforms in education focused on improving the quality of
teaching practices and had adopted some principles of the King s philosophy of
Sufficient Economy . The King articulated in a 1974 royal speech, If one focuses
only on rapid economic expansion without making sure that such a plan is
appropriate for our people and the condition of our country, it will inevitably result in
various imbalances and eventually end up as failure or crisis in other countries (Cited
by He Changchui at International Workshop on Sufficiency Economy on 27 July

conducting a way of life enhancing the development of the whole nation. The King
emphasizes the importance of management in order to ease the country s pains
endured from the 1997/1998 economic crisis and a willingness to achieve sustainable

They can be found in almost many places because they are so much common used.
When we see these several examples of container houses we can deduce advantages
and disadvantages of building container houses.
There is not chance of damaging of collapsing. That is why they are one of the most
durable systems for earthquake. After earthquake occurred in many places, instead
of building temporary tents, these containers are even built, what is more, people
who lived earthquake feel safer.. Due to, columns, shear walls or braces do not exist
in this system, the whole container bears its load by itself so it is earthquake proof.
These units are manufactured in factories without getting effected by bad weather
conditions. Thus, quality and productivity increase. Due to plumbing, covering,
joinery are with these containers, the installation time in construction site decreases.
When we compare with the traditional system, it lasts less and saves on time.
This units have standards and are produced the same, for that reason, cost per
product decreases. Even tough, it is not required to follow standards, it is possible to
have blocks as desired, and they are still cheaper than traditional
47. Different Types of Protocols Police Officers Must Consider
There are different types of protocols police officers must consider and exhibit when
communicating with others in a variety of situations. For typical police situations,
officers must consider whether they are emergency or non emergency situations.
Other common places in which officers are required to exhibit different forms of
protocol for communication include in correctional facilities and in courtroom
settings. In all of the situations, officers must be aware of both their verbal and non
verbal forms of communication, the latter of which is just as valuable as the former
in conveying messages to others (Server, no date).
In non emergency conventional police situations, it is extremely advisable for
officers to convey a sense of relaxation and amicable helpfulness in both their
demeanors as well as in their voices. One s posture in these situations should be
comfortable, and change positions at discreet intervals to demonstrate a sense of
relaxation. Similarly, the officer s voice should offer some degree of fluctuation,
and not come across to loud or commanding. For instance, it would be acceptable for
an officer to wave to whomever he is communicating with when first getting that
person s attention, and to speak in easy, reserved tones without raising his voice too
loudly. Failure to follow this protocol could result in undesirable consequences, the
most likely of which could be a lack of cooperation on the part of whomever the
officer is communicating with. If

Exciting Little Moments That Aren t Anymore There were so many fun games
that I used to play as a kid. Games like lava monster involved us jumping and
running from one part of a playground to another and making sure we didn t get

we got cornered by the person who was it, we would try to make sure not to get
caught ― for example, jumping off of the play structures to run away. Four square,
four corners, waterfall and jumprope were all classic games that we played. Jump rope
was a challenging game. We would sing songs as we jumped rope like Bubble Gum,

49. Change Blindness
Change blindness is the incapacity to detect changes to a visual scene. Over the past
decade, many researchers (Simons Levin, 1997; Simons Rensink, 2005) have studied
and reviewed this phenomena among several experiments. Notably, these studies
have given contribution to understand perception, attention, and awareness. In
experiments of scene memory, subjects viewed hundreds of photographs of natural
scenes. Afterward, they were asked to identify which photograph they had seen and
which ones they had never viewed before. Even though subjects can recognize
previously viewed pictures very well, the memories were not linked to the precise
visual form. In addition, subjects failed to detect changes when the images were
mirror reversed. These... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For that reason, the existence of movement transients across the retina might help to
change blindness. Transients also play a role drawing attention. Under those
circumstances, mimicking the eye movement without changing the fixation location
can help to understand change blindness. The flicker paradigm was designed to test
this hypothesis. In the flicker paradigm, an original image, a blank gray screen, and
a modified image are presented respectively in a fast alternation, giving the display a
flickering appearance. The cycle of rotation repeats until subjects report the change.
The response latency is used as a measure of change blindness. The results showed
that the change detection during the first cycle of alternation was almost zero and did
not increase too much after one minute of alternation. Interestingly, when the blank
gray screen was removed, the changes were detected easily. Experiments using real
world situations also demonstrated change blindness by people. Surprisingly, the age
of the participants reflected in how they noticed the changes. This was depending on
if the experimenters had almost their same age, especially to younger participants.
Additionally, familiar scenarios causes earlier attention to a changed property, for
example, drug users seeing pictures of drug
50. Comparing Segregation In 42 And Jim Crow Law
Maybe tomorrow, we ll all wear 42, so nobody could tell us apart. ( 42 01:42:52 56)
General Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey, decided to draft Jackie
Robinson into the baseball team. Rickey knew the negative feedback he would
receive and he refused to let society make the decision for him. Therefore, he went
seeking for a baseballplayer who could meet his standards, physically and mentally.
While some differences between Brian Helgelands movie 42 and the segregation in
society and the Jim Crow laws are evident, the similarities are striking. Segregation

A scene is displayed in the film where a teammate of Robinson told the players to
accept the fact Robinson is going to play with them because all he is trying to do
is play baseball. This player showed how segregation should not prevent a player
from remaining on a team, the decision should change their opinions on the
inequality in baseball. After a game another teammate of Robinson casually
approaches Robinson and discusses the fact of him not showering with the other
teammates. Robinson mentions his reason, which is, he decided to not shower with
them because he does not want his teammates to feel uncomfortable. His teammate
shows how a person of any color can get along, people should not be generalized off
their skin color because they are just like everyone else. Robinson s teammates show
how segregation should not determine whether someone should or should not do an
activity, or job. This decision can be based off of other qualities, and benefits an
organization would have if they hired the
51. Population Growth In American Cities In The Late 19th
Century
In the late 19th century, American cities exploded in population. This explosion was
fueled by population growth, technology in transportation, and industrialization. In
1870, there were only two American cities with a population of more than 500,000,
but by 1900, there were six. Three of these New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia had
over one million inhabitants. Roughly 40 percent of Americans lived in cities, and
the number was climbing (Urbanization, 2015). The various needs of the populated
cities forced changes to the physical and social make up of the American city.
A rapid population growth in American cities was fueled by an influx of immigrants
as well as native born Americans migrating to the bigger cities. Mass immigration
continued well into the 20th century. Immigrants became the reason that the big
cities grew fast in population, where industry offered work. Majority of immigrants
settled in the poorer areas of the cities, such as the Lower East Side in New York.
They were neighborhoods that had been emptied by upwardly mobile immigrants.
These immigrants settled into familiar territories that included immigrants from their
native countries that they could live and work with together. Some of these
neighborhoods were given nicknames such as Chinatown or Little Italy. These
sections of the cities helped to transition incoming immigrants to citizens but became

Industrialization was a big contribution to America s identity in the late 19th century
because it provided a framework for a larger economy. The technology in

efficient as machinery was improved. Each factory brought tons of workers to the

I am a native Staten Islander. Both my parents and set of grandparents were born on
Staten Island as well, so it s no surprise I was too. Much of my family lives on Staten
Island and my whole childhood memories and reflections are all based off being
Staten Island. I do appreciate the childhood memories I have as well as some of the
people I have met, but I have mixed feelings overall about where I am from and most
days I do not like it. I definitely agree it has both it s pro s and con s at times.
As much as I hate to admit it, there are things I enjoy about Staten Island. Most of
these things come from believe it or not, the few tourist attractions Staten Island is
home of. The architecture on Staten Island isn t bad. I think the Verazzano Narrows
bridge speaks volume when it comes to that, which connects from Staten Island to
Long Island and is visible from a spot in all 5 boroughs. My personal favorite starts
with the Historic Richmond Town which was founded as the Staten Island Historical
Society in 1856. The museum s focus creates opportunities for the public to explore
the diversity of the American experience from the colonial period to the present.
Richmond town is 100 acres consisting of 28 historic buildings dating from the late
17th to early 20th centuries, half still standing at their original locations which makes
the experience visiting overall more realistic and interesting. Another reason I like
Staten Island is because of Fort Wadsworth, which is one
53. Judith With The Head Of Holofernes
As artistic movements sweep certain time periods, location is an important factor in
the development of an artist s vision. While Europe is a compact continent, it s
artistic productions can be largely influenced by the country of origin. This can be
seen in multiple artistic movements such as the Renaissance where works from Italy
and England while largely influenced by the same artistic goals produce works with
stylistic differences. Baroquestyle art was also subject to these geographical
differences influencing the vision of the artist. Understanding the complex layers of
an artistic movement requires one to analysis works of art and how they compare to
other pieces produced during the same time. By taking two works with the same
subject matter, one can effectively dissect the influences that time and place have had
on the artist s execution. In 1530 Germany, Lucas Cranach the Elderproduced a
painting titled Judith with the Head of Holofernes depicting the biblical heroine
Judith with the severed head of Holofernes. A little more than a hundred years later in
1640 Italy, Massimo Stanzione created a similar representation of this story in his
work, Judith with the Head of Holofernes. Both artist took the same biblical story but
produced two individual works invoking different effects one through Baroque style
and the other a Renaissance interpuation.
The heroine of this story is Judith, a Jewish girl who slayed the Assyrian general,
Holofernes, before he could

by Clarence Clendenen The United States and Pancho Villa: A Study in
Unconventional Diplomacy was published in 1961. This source depicts Pancho
Villa and his relations with the United States, specifically about how he would not
have been able to succeed as a revolutionary figure if it were not for the U.S
government and Woodrow Wilson. The purpose the author wrote this source is
because he wanted to educate people, specifically U.S. citizens on how the United
States was seen as a superior country and poorer countries such as Mexico strived
for U.S. favor. The content this source is that Villa would not have been as
successful were it not for the favor of the U.S. This source is of value because it
outlines specific details of how Pancho Villa s image was transformed due to the
U.S. This source has helped me in my investigation by giving specific examples of
how Pancho Villa used the media, however it has limited me because of the fact it
takes on the point of the U.S. perspective and does not give the perspective of the
Mexicans. Overall, I used both of these sources
55. The Chimney Sweeper by William Blake
William Blake s poem, The Chimney Sweeper is a poem about children losing their
innocence and being forced to clean chimneys. The setting is in the industrial period
when children in orphanages being sent to work at such a young age. The young
boys were usually the ones to be put to work because they were small enough to get
into the chimneysand clean them. Children in this era eventually were diagnosed with
Black LungDisease because they inhaled too much soot in their lungs. The poem
opens with a child in the industrial period describing how his mother had died when
he was very young, showing the readers that he started sweeping chimneys and
being forced into labor at a young age. In the quote, And my father sold me while
yet my tongue letting readers know that he was sold before he could even speak.
In the third line he states that actually it was before he could even really cry
because he, could scarcely cry weep weep weep weep the reader can also pick up
on the fact that weep and sweep rhyme giving subtle hints. There was a big class
distinction back in the industrial period since the poor children are sweeping the
higher class people s chimneys. The distinction is shown when the poem says, So
your chimneys I sweep in soot I sleep . The words your and I really show the class
distinction. It emphasizes the words so that we know that the children have to do the
upper class people s dirty work. In the second stanza, the writer opens up about how
