In this presentation hat I gave at our Faber Portfolio day this year I am trying to build a model of how AI, Robotics and Conversational Interfaces will create a Superstack subsuming the current Internet and the majority of the global workforce.
We’ve shared a lot of data about whether and why ‘this time is different’. But beyond that, why is the tech market opportunity larger than any time in history (no, really!)? One word: mobile.
In this update of his past presentation on Mobile Eating the World — delivered this month at Andreessen Horowitz’ annual investor meeting — a16z’s Benedict Evans shares just how and why mobile changes everything. Because tech is outgrowing the tech industry.

2013 05 BEA - ’Mobile is eating the World’Benedict Evans
Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are dramatically increasing in sales and dominating the consumer technology market. Global PC sales peaked in 2011 and have declined since, being overtaken by surging tablet sales. By 2017 there will be over 7 billion mobile subscribers, compared to just over 1 billion PC users. This fundamental shift is changing industries like media, advertising, and retail as mobile internet usage grows and mobile platforms like Apple's iOS and Google's Android come to dominate the market.
This document discusses the rise of location-based services enabled by smartphones and other portable devices. It outlines how these services allow users to share their location and experiences in real-time within social networks. Three leading location-based social platforms - Foursquare, Gowalla and Brightkite - are profiled. The implications of precise user location data and growing mobile internet adoption are that location-based services have huge potential for advertising, content and commerce.
History has many examples of powerful companies that seem to be unbeatable. Then in a short time they become irrelevant due to new companies with new ideas. One of the factors in such transformation is technology. Never in history has technological change been so important in building and destroying companies. We look at few examples of successful companies that fail to address the chaning times and become disrupted. We also look at why technology emerges when it does and why some ideas can only be realised when certain conditions are met.
In this first lecture we set the tone for the course and define the themes that we will be looking at.

The document discusses trends in consumer tech and media from 2015-2020. It predicts that the industry will grow by over $500 billion in that time period, with the average American spending more time on tech and media than on work or sleep. It also notes that messaging platforms will surpass social networks as the dominant media activity and that the next big winners in streaming audio are already gaining popularity quietly.

The China App Index: Photo-Sharing via WeChat Sparks Viral Growth (June 2013)WandouLabs
China is world’s largest smartphone market, by far. But it’s a black hole for app data.
Here at Wandoujia, China's leading Android app store, we decided to change that. Wandoujia presents the very first edition of The China App Index, highlighting the top new apps and games in the Middle Kingdom.
The top trend for June 2013? Photo-sharing via WeChat sparks viral growth for apps. See how a feature to face-off (or 'PK') with celebrities rocketed the Baidu PhotoWonder app to 1.6 million downloads and an insane 4300% growth rate.
The document summarizes 12 trends from the 2011 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The trends include: 1) The rise of social TV and using social media to drive viewers back to live shared experiences. 2) Digital storytelling and brands becoming publishers. 3) The rise of HTML5 and web apps. 4) Collaboration and co-creation. 5) The power of real-time marketing. 6) Social business models. 7) Designing for social spread and networks. 8) Seamless integration across devices. 9) Tangible experiences and social objects. 10) The rise of tablets. 11) Interactive experiences across players and browsers. 12) Socially connected physical objects.
Redefiners: Capturing Media Growth DollarsActivate
The document discusses how media companies can capture $325 billion in growth dollars over the next 3 years by becoming "redefiners". It argues that media companies need to build new growth businesses through virtual startups, leverage quality content as an unfair advantage, and create engaging experiences across devices to compete against nimble startups. Redefiners will focus on serving customers, pivot strategies quickly as needed, and win through building rather than acquiring new businesses.
This document discusses creating an accessible and inclusive mobile experience. It begins by noting that while some devices like the iPhone are popular, they only represent a small portion of the overall mobile device market and user population. It then examines the need to make the mobile web accessible to all users, not just those with certain devices, and provides examples of how usage and capabilities vary greatly across the global mobile landscape. The document advocates for an adaptive approach that considers this diversity and creates an experience optimized for all types of mobile browsers and networks.

The Internet of Useless Things (and how to avoid it)Mark Brill
With the rapid growth of technologies the #IoT is upon us. There is a danger though, that many of those objects will be useless. This is an introduction into how to develop a brand IoT strategy and how to avoid the useless things. This is an ongoing project and more slides will be added!
You don't get to decide which device people use to access your content: they do. By 2015, more people will access the internet via mobile devices than on traditional computers. In the US today, one-third of people who browse the internet on their mobile phone say that's the only way they go online—for teens and young adults, those numbers are even higher. It's time to stop avoiding the issue by saying "no one will ever want to do that on mobile; "chances are, someone already wants to. In this session, Karen will discuss why you need to deliver content wherever your customer wants to consume it — and what the risks when you don't make content accessible to mobile users. Already convinced it's important? She'll also explain how to get started with your mobile content strategy, defining what you want to publish, what the relationship should be between your mobile and desktop site, and how your editorial workflow and content management tools need to evolve.

Several key technologies are then summarized, including smartphones and their dominance, the internet of things, digital transformation of businesses, 3D printing, robotics like self-driving cars, augmented and virtual reality, and machine learning. While the future possibilities seem vast, challenges like inequality and the environment remain, though optimism about abundance through technologies is expressed.
Each year, Mary Meeker unveils her fascinating Internet Trends presentation. And each year, her insights are inestimable and eagerly awaited.
But each year, I have a problem with her slides. As a presentation designer, I find them rough and busy. To the point it makes them hard to understand.
So this year, here’s my humble attempt at redesigning them !
The document discusses key trends in the consumer tech and media industries over the next five years. It notes that the industries will grow by over $500 billion and the average American now spends more time using tech and media than sleeping or working. It also highlights that messaging platforms will surpass social networks as the dominant online activity and some messaging apps are already seeing more usage time than social networks globally.
The smartphone has completely changed how people communicate, collaborate, discover, shop and do all sorts of things. This always-on device is in order of magnitude more powerful than the biggest computers in the 60s and now we carry it with us wherever we go. Smartphones combined with cloud technologies and real-time algorithms, are moving us to a transformation phase as software algorithms will transform traditional businesses be it in retail, banking, construction, education and so on. We are entering times of great disruption.

31. Implications
• Google might loose its’ Gatekeeper function and new
Gatekeepers will emerge
• The power is shifting back to consumers. No more
display ads, “recommended reading”, landing pages, etc.
• The heavy lifting will be done on the service/server side.
The magic happens behind the scenes. No more
“Onboarding”, “Interface Paradigms”, etc.
• Brands/businesses will REALLY have to have a
conversation with their user/customers
32. Select Opportunities along
the stack
• Disrupting existing B2C businesses with Conversational
interfaces: Shopping, Booking, etc.
• Specialised and universally available AI modules:
Scheduling, Translation, Booking, Semantic Analysis, NLP
• Organising Microwork: Recruiting, Managing, etc
• New funnels, new metrics, new advertising: New SaaS
opportunities
• Messaging platform play (unlikely)
