GeoWeb Concepts, Tools and ApplicationsMatthew Dance
This was an invited presentation to the University of Alberta's Human Geography and Planning 100 class. As the title implies, I provided a brief overview of GeoWeb concepts, tools and provided an overview of the maps I found most interesting in the past couple of months.
Abstract:
Public Participation GIS (PPGIS) defines a practice where GIS technology and methods are used in support of public participation and decision making in a number of domain applications (Sieber, 2000). PPGIS is viewed as a top-down process where a central authority identifies a problem, the stakeholders and the best way to address it (Ghose, 2007). Current advances in the GeoWeb are challenging the top-down purview of PPGIS in that more citizens are directly engaging with tools that enable the collection and communication of place-based knowledge by non-experts. This emerging process raises pertinent questions, including: How is knowledge of place expressed, and to what extent is it relevant to PPGIS? This talk will highlight local research that centered on Edmonton’s river valley trail network where 17 informants were interviewed regarding their knowledge of place, in addition to their collection and communication of place-based information. This research will address the crowdsourcing of such information through the GeoWeb as a means of replacing traditional, authority controlled, PPGIS processes. We will demonstrate that individuals possess a complex, detailed and nuanced understanding of place. And, finally, we will discuss the current limits and future trends of the GeoWeb’s ability to capture that depth of understanding.

Understand what geospatial technology is? Geospatial technology refers to all the techniques used to acquire, manipulate & store geographic information. Geospatial Technology is one of the forms of GIS. Various tools accomplish it like GIS, GNSS, RS, & other emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, IOT, Augmented Reality (AR), etc
Although GPS developments started in 1967, it’s only in the early 70’s that NASA launched its first Earth Observation satellite. Contemporary technologies like satellite navigation and remote sensing are key in our daily life. Still, we ain’t seen nothing yet. Explore the potential of these technologies in your future products or services, and find a way to get things done.

Construction companies such as BAM Infra Telecom rely on accurate, up-to-date maps. Google Maps isn’t enough, but doing on-site surveys is expensive and time-consuming. However, driving through and recording 360° video from a car is cheap and easy. Using machine learning, we turn videos into highly accurate maps.

Open Historical Maps: Crowdsourcing, Open Source GIS, and the Research WebSchuyler Erle
Geography has disappeared from the social sciences as an independent discipline, even as the Internet has given rise to the development of "digital history" as a new media practice. How can we leverage the latest technologies and techniques of the Web to bring geography back front-and-center to research in the humanities?
Cartography is the art, science and technology of map making.
Maps are used as research tools and as sources of information.
Maps have existed since the time of the Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Chinese civilizations, with the latter maps dating back to 6000 years.
OpenStreetMap introduced open crowdsourcing as successful model for collecting geographic data and community mapping. The presentation highlights some points why it can be interesting for Towns to take a closer look at OpenStreetMap.

Talk titled 'User-centred and Participatory Cartography'
Interest in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has been part of Geographical Information Science (GIScience) and cartography for a long time. Even before the term Geographical Information System (GIS) was invented (Tomlinson, 1967), researchers of “Man Machine Interaction” at MIT where utilising the display capabilities of the latest generation of computers to manipulate oceanic geographical information (Pivar at al., 1963). From this early start, HCI became an integral part of Cartography and GIScience research agendas. Interest focused on expert cartographers and their work in the 1960s and 1970s, and moved to wider range of specialised users in the 1980s and 1990s. This followed the spread of geographic technologies to wider audiences, culminating with the ‘Cambrian Explosion’ of maps on the internet. More recently, with the increased abilities of members of the public to create and share information, cartography became available to many, sometimes under the guise of ‘neogeography’. The talk with cover the evolution of HCI research in Cartography, focusing on participatory GIS and mapping, and demonstrating the importance of user centred design in the sharing of maps within this domain. It ends with examples of citizen science and how cartography play a role within it.

Playful Explorations of Public and Personal Data - OSCON Data 2011Andrew Turner
It’s easy to find and create data. But what are you going to do with it? Can I ask the world complex questions such as what’s the local crime rate, distance to metro, or rating of my local school? Can you combine these all together to rate houses you may want to buy? And how do you then connect back to your government and local businesses to engage in collaborative decision making.
This talk with discuss how you should consider users and their personal interactions with data and information. We’ll also peel back the covers on how open source tools such as HBase, Cascading, Geos and Polymaps handle analyzing and streaming realtime data to maps and visualizations both on the web and to mobile devices.
To illustrate what’s possible, we’ll dive through GeoCommons, a large online community of data sharing and community analytics that uses open source mapping visualization, Hadoop analysis, and mobile interfaces to provide this to the world. Users can even build and socialize their own analysis methods to share their expert knowledge with other users. We’ll also review how global organizations like the World Bank and United Nations are using these tools to connect with citizens in developing countries to empower them to make decisions on building investment and understanding how climate science may affect their areas.
We have built amazing technology that finds our friends, places to go, and tracks our media. But is that the only legacy we want to leave behind? What else can our technology be useful for in meaningful ways?

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
