TELUS Case Study: GIS for Telecommunicationseventspat
The TELUS TV customer base has tripled over the last two years. To support this growth TELUS initiated a project to liberate data from their spatial data store for TELUS TV marketing, investment and provisioning. This project integrated TELUS corporate data with consumer tools. Consumer tools like Google Maps, Bing Maps and Open Source GIS provide TELUS with a plethora of functionality and data. Like any consumer product, it is not a panacea for corporate users. However, there is a lot of functionality that can be tailored to the needs of utility workflows. Come see specific workflows that show the benefit of mashing-up corporate GIS with Consumer GIS and how others are leveraging consumer GIS to increase their GIS Return on Investment!
Description of the work done for the Semantic Markup activity of the Semantic Sensor Networks Incubator activity (at W3C).
Presentation made at the Australian Ontology Workshop, Melbourne, December 2009. The full title of the paper is: "Review of semantic enablement techniques used in geospatial and semantic standards for legacy and opportunistic mashups" (and it is available via crpit.com)

Playful Explorations of Public and Personal Data - OSCON Data 2011Andrew Turner
It’s easy to find and create data. But what are you going to do with it? Can I ask the world complex questions such as what’s the local crime rate, distance to metro, or rating of my local school? Can you combine these all together to rate houses you may want to buy? And how do you then connect back to your government and local businesses to engage in collaborative decision making.
This talk with discuss how you should consider users and their personal interactions with data and information. We’ll also peel back the covers on how open source tools such as HBase, Cascading, Geos and Polymaps handle analyzing and streaming realtime data to maps and visualizations both on the web and to mobile devices.
To illustrate what’s possible, we’ll dive through GeoCommons, a large online community of data sharing and community analytics that uses open source mapping visualization, Hadoop analysis, and mobile interfaces to provide this to the world. Users can even build and socialize their own analysis methods to share their expert knowledge with other users. We’ll also review how global organizations like the World Bank and United Nations are using these tools to connect with citizens in developing countries to empower them to make decisions on building investment and understanding how climate science may affect their areas.

Presentation at the 2009 North Carolina GIS Conference, in Raleigh, NC
Discussing the common criticisms GIS users have with the concept of neogeography, but are actually reflective of their own issues, and how neogeography is developing solutions that can apply back to GIS, geography, and cartography.
Talk given to RefreshDC at the January 2009 meeting.
Since I was only given 2 days to prepare, it's an agglomeration of the last couple of talks I've given in Nairobi, FOWA London, and Web2Expo.
The talk is a very broad overview of the current GeoWeb technologies and examples. In future talks I will definitely be focusing more on specific topics to get more in-depth discussion and analysis of tools and techniques.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
