Giant pandas are identified by their distinctive black and white coloring. They have short tails and thick fur to keep them warm in the cool, wet mountain zones where they live. Pandas primarily eat bamboo, consuming 10-20 kg per day using their protruding wrist bones and strong teeth. They reach maturity between 4-8 years old, but females are only able to become pregnant for 2-3 days each spring. Habitat destruction has led to pandas being classified as endangered as their forest homes are taken over for development. While there are conservation efforts, currently there are only around 2,000 giant pandas remaining in the wild.
