The giant panda is a bear native to central and western China. It is identifiable by its black patches around its eyes, ears, and body. Despite being classified as carnivorous, the giant panda's diet consists mainly of bamboo. It eats 9 to 14 kg of bamboo shoots per day due to the low nutritional value of bamboo. Its population has declined due to loss of habitat and it is now endangered, with estimates of 1,590 to 3,000 pandas remaining in the wild. The giant panda has a thick coat to keep it warm and large teeth and jaws to crush bamboo.
