12. ROI – Calculating the commercial benefit
based on NICE 2008 ROI calculator
Assumptions:
• 1000 person scheme
• Average pay (estimated salary + overhead) = £15 /hour
• Average cost of staff turnover = £7750 /person 1
• 10% reduction in sickness absence level and employee turnover 1
Costs:
• Activity4Charity challenge = £39,000 (exc. VAT, exc. postage costs)
• Internal challenge coordinator (est.) = £5000
Savings:
Sickness absence: starting level = 3.7% (9.3 days/year) 2
• Saving from 10% reduction1 = £104,000
Employee turnover: starting level = 69.6% retention 2 = 30.4% turnover
• Saving from 10% reduction1 = £233,000
Return:
£337,000 saving = 7.6:1 ROI just from absence and retention savings

Editor's Notes
In the UK we have an employee engagement problem, ranking 9th amongst the world’s 12 largest economies by GDP
The latest CBI employment trends survey stated that securing high levels of EE was the top priority for UK business.
As well as performance and productivity, employee engagement impacts positively on levels of absenteeism and on retention,
Companies with highly engaged staff report employees take approximately half the number of days absence than that of low engagement companies.
Those employees in high engagement companies also report significantly less workplace stress, 28% versus 39% (Aon Hewitt 2012).
Estimated that disengaged employees cost the UK economy £64 B through lost productivity, poor service delivery and reduced effort.
Opportunity, use the same technologies that give employees more freedom, to create compelling engagement services.
two out of three mobile phone users and 53.7% of the UK population will use smartphones
The number of UK smartphone users continues to grow rapidly. There will be 30.9 million smartphone users in the country in 2013, eMarketer estimates, representing 48.4% of UK residents and 60.4% of UK mobile phone users.
