Geothermal energy is energy generated from heat stored in the Earth. It was first used centrally in Italy and is now used for electricity generation in power plants and directly as geothermal heat pumps for heating and cooling. While it provides cost savings, environmental, and economic benefits, geothermal energy has disadvantages in that it is not widespread, installation can be costly, reservoirs can be depleted, and it is only suitable for certain regions.
