On May 27 2021, the Child Protection and Gender sections at NYHQ and UNICEF Innocenti organised an internal webinar on UNICEF’s Strategy Paper on the Gender Dimensions of Violence against Children and Adolescents in which over 200 UNICEF colleagues from regional and country levels participated. The webinar aimed to help participants learn more about the strategy paper and provided an opportunity to share ideas and recommendations for the implementation of priority actions in this area.

In order to support country governments with informed programming for children at sub national level, UNICEF Kenya came up with unique way of representing data dealing with Child Rights – Child Deprivation Index and County Infographics for all 47 counties. The child deprivation index is an innovative way of measuring multi-dimensional poverty and rights deprivation for children by county. The child deprivation index and other data at county level were collated and used to generate county data sheets and infographics which were then presented to county governments. The Infographics present national and county indicators in thematic areas including demographics, education, water and sanitation, maternal and child health and HIV, nutrition and child protection. Index of child deprivation developed based on 13 indicators in domains of health, education, and material wellbeing. Counties are ranked according to their level of deprivation, and their contribution to national child deprivation. Link to the Conference: http://www.gisfortheun.com/about/index.html

2.1.1. Politics is still a male domain that many women have found unwelcoming or even hostile. Societies in which traditional or patriarchal values remain strong may frown on women entering politics. On the other hand women are often more likely than men to face practical barriers to entering politics, including a paucity of financial resources, lower levels of education, less access to information, greater family responsibilities, and a deprivation of rights that has left them with fewer opportunities to acquire political experience. Women also generally lack the political networks necessary for electoral success and barriers to women’s political participation are often magnified in crises societies. These may be characterised by militarism, a volatile security situation, the political dominance of a small group of (typically male) elites, the absence of well-established political parties, the failure to include women in peace nego-tiations and the bodies created for peace implementation, and other limiting factors. When political parties are based more on prominent personalities associated with a faction in conflict than on issue-focused platforms and programmes, it is harder for women to emerge as political leaders

Tiger Worm Toilets (Oxfam Public Health Engineering webinar)

Ever scratched your head trying to find safe excreta disposal solutions for pour flush latrines in congested urban slums, remote locations, high water tables, rocky ground and no-network areas? Well, this webinar could have the answers you've been looking for. The worm based sanitation project in Monrovia was designed by Oxfam and inspired by the Biofil (from Ghana) and Tiger Toilet systems. This novel system aims to tackle the challenges of excreta disposal where de-sludging is not possible and was designed for pour flush latrines (where waste is disposed of directly into an above ground concrete chamber). The worms live in a bedding material (coconut fibre which has been soaked for 24 hours in water) and eat the waste flushed into the chamber. Excreta are deposited on this bedding material whilst the liquid is filtered through a media of gravel, charcoal and sand. The effluent produced is collected in an external sump, which is then emptied by the householder. After 3 years there is virtually no waste to remove from the chamber as the worms eat and excrete nominal amounts. This approach of course requires community engagement, understanding and pro-activeness before, during and after the installation of the system. Wealth: Having it all and wanting more

Global wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small wealthy elite. These wealthy individuals have generated and sustained their vast riches through their interests and activities in a few important economic sectors, including finance and insurance, and pharmaceuticals and healthcare. Companies from these sectors spend millions of dollars every year on lobbying to create a policy environment that protects and enhances their interests further. The most prolific lobbying activities in the US are on budget and tax issues; public resources that should be directed to benefit the whole population, rather than reflect the interests of powerful lobbyists. This briefing explains Oxfam’s methodology and data sources and updates key inequality statistics, such as Oxfam’s frequently cited fact in 2014: ‘85 billionaires have the same wealth as the bottom half of the world’s population’.
