Diegetic

Non-Diegetic
SYNCHRONOUS SOUND
Sounds that reflect what can be seen on screen.

e.g. A shot of a door closing and the sound of the
                        slam.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdBO3uQcHgI
ASYNCHRONOUS SOUND
Sounds that don’t reflect the images on screen.

e.g. a police siren in the distance

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW4tjKzDEDU
CONTRAPUNTAL SOUND
Sounds that are juxtaposed with images that are
               displayed on screen.

e.g. violence on screen supported by happy music

 In pairs, choose two different genres of film
and make a list of the diegetic sounds you
    would associate with the genres
 Make notes notes on the types of non-
diegetic soundtrack you would expect to
    accompany the sounds on screen
 What type of music would we expect to hear
    during these scenes:
A woman in walking down a deserted street at
night, and we know a psychopath is on the loose
     A speedboat chase
 A soldier says goodbye to his sweetheart before
      leaving for battle
