Why Is Beowulf Epic Or Awesome
Beowulf is an epic poem, but you already know that. But by modern terms, I would definitely classify
this poem as epic or awesome . I don t quite understand why, but I really enjoyed this poem. It was
very easy to read. I was able to comprehend all of the text without any trouble. From the beginning of
the story, you know that the heroic character is going to have some divine motivations. Beowulf will
become the idol of Geats, he will gain much glory and respect and a little bit of fame. Clearly, these
were his motivations for all of his courageous acts and he certainly fulfilled his expectations.
When Beowulf agrees to battle Grendel, he is purely accepting the challenge because he feels it is his
moral obligation. He knows it is his duty to defend and protect the citizens of Geats. Obviously, no
one honestly wants to fight a massive lizard man, who can crush thirty men at once, but hey, let s let
Beowulf give it a shot. Surprisingly, Beowulf tells the King that he wants to fight the monster with his
bare hands; grappling, would be a better way to describe his intentions. I am still not completely sure
why Beowulf chose to deny any and all kinds of weapons, but his insane game plan ends up working,
so I guess that s all that truly matters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Oddly enough, Beowulf chose to wear armor and use weapons for this battle. Why would he do that?
He had already gained some glory for slaying the monster Grendel. Fortunately, Beowulf knows that
women fight a lot differently than men. Women know how to use our minds in battle. We can deceive
you in front of your very eyes, and you still wouldn t know what is going on. Girls fight dirty, and
Beowulf is prepared. At this point in his life, Beowulf is ready to achieve some fame. Because who
doesn t want to profit from some infamy? He is already seen as the great hero of Geats, so why not
progress to the village s

Persuasive Essay On Ice Hockey
Since you re fortunate enough to attend a prep school in New England, you must be aware of the
highly competitive boys ice hockey program. Luckily you attend the one and only Canterbury School
which just so happens to be known for the best hockey program on the east coast. The whole team
even swears upon every saint s puck member having at least three divisions one college looks, even
the players who are getting their first opportunity to dress this year! The school has taken pride in this
team for over 90 years now, making it the highest priority around campus. Wondering where all that
tuition money is going? Well that answer is simple, its going to the boy s varsity saint s puck squad!
Remember no matter how much money you put in the only thing that is going to make a team
successful in the athletic ability and love for the game, which is made very apparent with this group of
boys. This team is very loving and accepting towards one another. It is a very diverse bunch, with tall,
short, big boned , thin, American, Canadian, Korean, ½ American and ½ Canadian, Finnish. From
meals to mass they are always huddled together, no one is left behind. Everyone is envious of boys
that occupy up the right corner tables in the dining hall. From the moment you hear your name being

That s the kind of Canterbury character that this school hopes the students gain, putting others before
themselves. Even though other members of the community may complain that the school glorify the
varsity hockey squad and call them horrible , they must try and understand that they are the best team
on the hill. The amount of time and effort the boys put in is remarkable, they put in what they get out.
Hope to see you on January 21st, 2017 at 4:45 as this top squad takes on Taft, but if you can t make it

Techniques Used by Clarinet Players
Technique is very important for all musicians of all types, especially for Clarinet players. Many of the
techniques are vital for a great musician to understand. Things such as embouchure, vibrato and tone
effects are all things that are required by the musician. I will be investigating the embouchure and how
a correct one will substantially increase your prowess as a woodwind, particularly clarinet, player. The
clarinet is a woodwind instrument that has a single reed mouthpiece. Johann Christoph Denner
invented the clarinet in Germany around the turn of the 18th century by adding a register key to the
earlier Chalumea. Having a correct embouchure is vitally important to playing woodwind instruments.
Structure
1. Embouchure.
2. Different types of embouchures in different people.
3. Research into different kinds of embouchure and how other people do it.
4. Synthesis of why it is very important to have an good embouchure.
With the woodwinds, the sound is generated by a reed and not with the lips. The embouchure is
therefore based on sealing the area around the reed and the mouthpiece. This makes sure that there is
no air escaping from either side of the mouthpiece when the musician is blowing. A reed instrument
works by having the musician blowing a steady breath of air over the reed and through the
mouthpiece. The vibrations of the reed are what produce the sound that makes up the notes. The
harder or stronger the air is passing over the reed the higher the pitch of the

Inferno And The Divine Comedy
Inferno (c. 1314) serves as the first part of Dante Alighieri s poem Divine Comedy which is a journey
through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. On a broader level, Divine Comedy serves as an allegory for the
journey of the soul towards God through the created earth. Inferno and the Divine Comedy serve as a
form of scholastic thought, the rational study of religion, as Dante draws on medieval theology to
share the modern view on God and the afterlife. This essay explores Dante s perception of the universe
and man s place in it. Throughout Inferno, Dante provides a unique perspective on his view of sin and
justice these views a direct result of Dante s own beliefs and the current political situation in Florence.
A major theme that Inferno underscores is that God represents justice and love. His justice can be seen
in Hell as the magnitude of each sin corresponds to the punishment one will receive in the afterlife.
Throughout Divine Comedy, Dante shares a vision of an ordered universe where everyone is where
they belong. The structure of the universe, specifically Hell, can be seen as a representation of God s
love for His people. Sin is a violation of divine perfection and without God s love; everyone would be
punished for their sin. As Dante and the reader are taken throughout Inferno, we can see that Hell is
just another creation of God s justice and love as each sinner is punished according to how
contradictory their sin is to God s will. The structure of Divine Comedy is the

How Does Tim Hortons Impact On Canadian Culture
Tim Hortons as a brand has been around since the 1970 s and has etched its name into Canadian lore
through its sheer popularity and the impact it has had on Canadian culture. Almost as synonymous
with Canada has things like hockey, maple syrup, and poutine, Tim Hortons is a prominent feature of
the Canadian identity. Also, Tim Hortons has found a way to integrate itself into many different
aspects of the Canadian culture. Including, being a staple of many Canadian s everyday lives, with

Tim Hortons though is different, coffee isn t produced in Canada like it is in places such as Brazil.
Which begs the question how did Tim Hortons manage to become a staple of Canadian heritage? Well
the answer lies in how it marketed itself to the regular everyday Canadian. A key part of the Canadian
identity is the that of being hard working and being low key. When you look inside a Tim Hortons you
see exactly that, mostly brown cups, and a brown aesthetic that seems like it is minding its own
business. Unlike a company like Starbucks, Tim Hortons is not plagued by an urban pretentious
because even in their locations in downtown metropolitan areas like Toronto, they keep their low key
and quiet aesthetic (Cronack). Furthermore, Tim Hortons while embracing Canadian values does not
out right announce itself as such. If they did announce themselves as hard working and humble , many
canadians would not embrace it because many would feel that if you refer to yourself as humble you
lose whatever humility that you had. So Tim Hortons decides to keep its mundane and humble
aesthetic by just being there. They are just a coffee shop that is a part of everyday life for Canadians,
no flash, no bells and whistles, just a coffee shop that s there everyday to serve your average everyday

What composes a woman? An even deeper question being what composes womanhood? As a matter

portrayed as delicate beings, but are held to extremely high standards by society. One of the most
famous stories The Scarlet Letter Is a story that begins in seventeenth century Boston. A woman who
is accused of adultery displays the scarlet letter A on her chest. Displaying the scarlet letter is
punishment for what she had done, along with the public shaming of course (Hawthorne). Setting

From a young age Clemencia s mother often warned her to never marry a Mexican man. Clemencia s
mother being a Mexican American and her father being Mexican born and raised, she felt that she didn
t belong to any particular class. Proof of this is when she states I m amphibious. I m a person who
doesn t belong to any class (Cisneros 111). Opening, it s a simple observation that Clemencia is
somewhat out of place, with little to no direction. Clemencia s rooted values play a critical role in this
story. Growing up, Clemencia witnessed her mother s acts of adultery during the time that her father
was sick and debilitated. Most daughters shift their attention to their mothers for direction about
womanhood, but it is possible she felt that she never had her mother there in that sense. It s crucial to
realize that like most adolescents, Clemencia never knew better than what she had witnessed growing
up. Throughout the text Clemencia attempted to decipher her mother s warning. I guess she did it to

The Language in The Red Room by H G Wells and The Signalman by Charles Dickens Throughout,
The Signalman has suspense and the tension is gripping, as the author, Dickens, has used exceedingly
good description in the language and the setting is just perfect. Dickens had an advantage when
writing this story as there were similarities between himself and some of the characters; since he had
been involved in a train accident himself. He creates mystery in this book very well. He uses repetition
in the book, as the phrase, Halloa! Below there! was repeated at least three times in the story. The
language used in this story sets the setting perfectly, here is an example, a dripping wet wall of ...

The Discovery Of The Fossil Species Essay
Is there a subspecies of Homo sapiens that lived complete opposite lives as us? Did we cause them to
go extinct or did we live and interbreed with them? I will be discussing aspects of the species Homo
neanderthalensis who lived alongside Homo sapiens and may have even interbred with them. I will be
focusing specifically on the discovery of the fossil species, where the species is in the human ancestral
tree, anatomical similarities and differences with Homo sapiens, and the lifestyle and extinction of the
Neanderthals.
The first fossil found, named Neanderthal 1, was found in 1856 in Germany. The name Homo
neanderthalensis was suggested by Geologist William King, because the fossil was found in the
Feldhofer Cave of the Neander Valley in Germany and tal (a modern version of thal) means valley in
German. (Smithsonian) Some people refer to the species as Neandertal, with no h, to reflect modern
German spelling. Several years after Neanderthal 1 was found, scientists realized that earlier
discoveries in Engis, Belgium (1829) and Forbes Quarry, Gibraltar (1848) were also Neanderthals,
putting the actual discovery date at 1829. Other key specimens are Le Moustier, France (of a 45,000
year old skull which had Neanderthal features in an adolescent individual proving these characteristics
were genetic and not developed during their life), Lagar Velho in Abrigo do Lagar Velho, central

Thucydides
Scholars recognize Thucydides as one of the most celebrated Athenian historian, with him named as
the father of scientific history. Thucydides wrote the unfinished History of the Peloponnesian War. In a
period with scarce evidence available, Thucydides single narrative acts as the sole artefact that
provides information regarding the war. His History narrates the Peloponnesian War between Athens
and Sparta, and also recounts the foreign relations military and diplomatic activities of Athens and
various Greek states during the fifth century BC. With his History as the main source, the question of
whether Thucydides may be bias in his writing towards Athens emerges. However, through examining

Thucydides depicts Pericles s funeral oration early on in his History, which honored Athenians
strength and sense of duty as well as believing in the greatness of Athens. Everything Pericles spoke
of in the oration glorified Athens achievements, aiming to raise morale during the state of war. In his
praises, Pericles acknowledges Athens as an exemplar state to other Greeks and declares in short, I
[Pericles] say that as a city we are the school of Hellas, while I doubt if the world can produce a man
who, where he has only himself to depend upon, is equal to so many emergencies, and graced by so
happy a versatility, as the Athenian (Thuc. 2.41). One may argue that the oration illustrates the
epitome of Thucydides support for Athens, as he did not record the speech verbatim and could have
instilled his own views. Nevertheless, as demonstrated in other instances, Thucydides is just as critical
of Athens as praising. In the Melian Dialogue that took place in 416 BC, Athens essentially imposed
its vast power on the small island of Melos. Athenians threatened Melians to surrender and pay tribute,
or suffer the repercussions as they eloquently stated, in terms of practicality the dominant exact what
they can and the weak concede what they must (Thuc. 5.89). The Melians refusal to obey to Athens
demands culminated to a siege that ended in the Athenian assembly voting to mercilessly execute all
the men and enslave all women and children. The once glorified portrayal of Athens succumbs to a
decline of moral values and transforms into one of an oppressive state with an entitled mentality to
conquer other Greeks, comparable to the traits of tyrants in their hunger to acquire more power. Here,
Thucydides made the conscious choice to relate two drastically different speeches that paints Athens

Civil Engineer Responsibilities
The responsibilities of professional civil engineers
1.0 Introduction
Civil engineers play a massive role in building society as we know it they are responsible for our
quality of life. Civil engineers plan, design, maintain and construct infrastructure such as railways,
dams and water systems. This report will touch upon a few of the important day to day responsibilities
that civil engineers face and highlight the importance of these responsibilities. This report will also
mention a few of the key attributes of being a professional civil engineer taken from the ICE (institute
of civil engineers). Other attributes that haven t been mentioned in the report include: a technical and
practical application of engineering, independent responsibilities and independent judgement,
professional commitment, interpersonal skills and communication and commercial ability.
2.0 Management and leadership
Management and leadership is a key attribute for being a civil engineer. Civil engineers face many
difficulties in their job which require advanced problem solving skills. This is Especially the case on
harder projects a lot of the time you will need help and ideas from your peers to get the work done and
also to check over the work once finished. Part of problem solving is working effectively with a team
around you and all working together and contributing to getting the job done. Another important part
of management is time keeping and making sure that everyone in your team is keeping to their
individual deadlines. A further skill to managing your team is to make sure everyone is on the right job
and everyone is clear on what it is they have to do. This also means making sure your team are
communicating sufficiently this is the key to your success as a leader. All these skills within
management and leadership are vital skills necessary for a professional civil engineer.
3.0 Health and safety
Health and safety is extremely important for civil engineers. There were 43 deaths in 2015/2016 from
the construction sector. Fortunately, the number of fatal injuries in the uk has decreased dramatically
in recent years but there is still an alarming number of injuries to workers. In 2015 the HSE (health

Tian Department of Business, Medaille College, New York Abstract: The significance of cultural
influence on business has been widely recognized in both academic and business circles. A number of
authors suggest that an anthropological approach is the most appropriate way to study cultural factors
and assess their impact on an organizational environment. This investigation draws attention to several
important cultural issues in business utilizing an anthropological perspective. It probes the relationship
between culture and human behavior, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anthropology, especially cultural anthropology, seeks to understand how and why peoples of the
world differ in various ways as well as how and why peoples of the world share certain similarities. It
is not at all unusual for people to assume that their own ways of thinking and acting are
unquestionably rational normal or human. Cultural anthropological study provides us a look at the
enormous variations in thinking and acting found in the world today due to the cultural differences
and at same time anthropological literature has documented many different solutions generated for
solving the same problems cross culturally. Therefore, anthropologists do more than simply document
the enormous variations in human cultures by identifying and describing the commonalities of humans
amid the great diversity, which are the regularities found in all cultural contexts regardless of how
different those contexts might appear at first glance (Ferraro, 2005). Anthropologists have traditionally
used a qualitative research approach to study human behaviors in different cultures. Such an approach
is well suited to many of the complex questions confronting researchers interested in quality and
culture. Qualitative research, more than just a set of data collection methods, is an approach that seeks
to understand events, activities, norms and values from the perspective of the people who are being
studied, anthropologists refer this way of research as the Emic approach. Qualitative

environmental issues and problems that need to be addressed. The name of the agency tells us that
they are here to protect the environment and hold those who would harm our earth responsible for

The amount of pollution that has spilled is three times more than was previously reported (Garrison,

The EPA administrator Shaun McGrath has stated that the EPA has contained the rest of the spill in
two ponds near the spill site and they are treating it (Garrison, 2015). Another group of people affected
by the spill is the Navajo Nation, and the Navajo Nation commission has declared a state of
emergency. The Nation is 27,000 square miles and has been considered to be the size of some of the
smaller states like West Virginia. Navajo Nation president Russel Begaye has asked an attorney to
look into filing a lawsuit against the EPA (Garrison, 2015). Russel has also stated his dissatisfaction
with the EPA s handling of this disaster, along with not being clear about exactly what toxins have
been released into the river. The people of the Nation are concerned about the water quality and how it
will affect drinking water, cattle, and crops. The EPA seems to have made quite a few mistakes in
dealing with this spill; New Mexico s Governor Martinez says that she did not even find out about the

Theatre is the art that shaped the Hellene culture, and that is the single most influential culture that

responsible for many firsts, theatre being among them. Theatre and other arts flourished in ancient
Greece between 550 BCE and 220 BCE. Its geographic influence was momentous, spanning through
parts of modern day Italy, Turkey, Egypt, Spain, and France. These productions were showcased and

This ever changing people s history is left in the few remaining volumes the works of comedy,
tragedy, and satire (____________90) .
One of the earliest Greek records of satire can be traced to around 500 B.C. Early Greek satires (
Satyrs or Satyric dramas ) were in essence comedy plays, usually fairly bawdy, and often involved
men dressed as Satyrs (clearly the root of the word Satyric). Satyrs were mythological creatures with
the upper half of a man and the bottom half of a goat or horse. Satyr was one of three forms of
Athenian drama, nestling comfortably as a new genre alongside tragedy and comedy. Satyr was
quickly developed between the writers Pratinas, Aristeas, and Aeschylus. These new Satyrs did not
begin life as fully developed features they were instead used as interval pieces to relieve the
seriousness of tragic plays. These comic pieces, counterpointing and parodying the tragedy, became
extremely popular devices and led to the extension of the form.
Ancient Greek comedy was one of the final three principal dramatic forms in the theatre of classical
Greece (the others being tragedy and the satyr play). Athenian comedy is conventionally divided into
three periods, Old Comedy, Middle Comedy, and New Comedy. Old Comedy survives today largely in
the form of the eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes, while Middle Comedy is largely lost, i.e.
preserved only in relatively short fragments in authors such as Athenaeus of Naucratis. New Comedy

Colberg s Theory Of Psychosexual Development
Introduction
The term development refers to change or growth that occurs in children. It starts with infancy and
continues to adulthood. A development theory concern with three things and it deal with change over
time. First, it should describe changes over time within an area or several areas of development.
Second, it should describe changes among areas of development. Third, it should explain these
changes. In developmental theory it focuses on abnormal behavior and later researchers became

Freud s theory of psychosexual development is one of the wonderful theories and it is the first theory

behavior later in life. Freud s Stages of Psychosexual Development are same like other stage theories

The Pursuit Of A Happy Life Essay
It is common sense that all the human beings would like to live a happy life and they will spare no
efforts in order to realize the purpose of really living a happy life in the end. However, different people
have different definitions toward what a happy life is and they tend to have different standards as for
how a life is that can be regarded as a happy life. There is no doubt that people will then try different
means in order to pursue a happy life based on their definition toward what a happy life is. Therefore,
the following will talk about the pursuit of a happy life from the perspectives of both Dalai Lama in
The Art of Happiness and Viktor E. Frankl in Man s Searching for Meaning, during which the
experiences of some characters from the film Forrest Gump will be applied as evidence. Generally
speaking, the pursuit of a happy life in the minds of Dalai Lama and Viktor E. Frankl can be achieved
via experiencing sufferings and adversity. It is hoped that this analysis can help people understand
what a happy is from a different point of view.
The Pursuit of a Happy Life
First and foremost comes Dalai Lama s idea toward how to pursue a happy life. In Chapter 8 of The
Art of Happiness, Facing Suffering, Dalai Lama argues that suffering is an inherent part of human life,
and that accepting that suffering is both natural and unavoidable will help us to tolerate adversity and
eventually work to remove the causes of suffering: Our attitude towards suffering becomes very

John Steinbeck s East Of Eden
I. SUBJECT John Steinbeck s East of Eden centers on the Trask and Hamilton families in the year
1902 in the Salinas Valley, California. After growing up in Connecticut alongside his brother Charles
under the harsh parenting and rejection of his father, Adam Trask seeks to find happiness and peace.
He vows to be a better man than his father and feels the rolling valleys of California calling him. One
night, Cathy Ames crawls onto the doorstep of Adam and Charles home after her boyfriend attempted
to kill her. Adam cares for Cathy and soon falls in love with the woman she portrays herself to be. He
is unaware of her dark past and her evil motive to further herself in life. Charles is skeptical of Cathy
and wants her to leave their home. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is through the opposition of one another that an absence of the love they so earnestly desire is bred.
Rejection is first present in Cyrus Trask s raising of his two sons, Adam and Charles. Cyrus utilizes a
harsh parenting style, one in which he trains his sons for the military from a young age. Charles excels
at the rigorous trainings, while Adam struggles and begins to develop a hatred for his father. As Cyrus
pushes Adam harder, a favoring of one son over the other is apparent. Cyrus favors Adam because he
feels he is the stronger and better son, I love you better. I always have...Else why would I have given
myself the trouble of hurting you? (Steinbeck 28). Charles feels rejected and works to gain his father s
approval, but Cyrus continues to favor Adam regardless of Charles efforts. It is due to this rejection
that Charles develops a sensitive and violent personality, Rage came first and then a coldness, a
possession; noncommittal eyes and a pleased smile and no voice at all, only a whisper. When that
happened murder was on the way (30). Charles violence and anger are a failing effort to fight for love,
which in return only makes him a broken man. Cathy Ames is an example of how rejection by one
woman can lead to the downfall of all those around her. Cathy was born an enigma and used this to
manipulate others. People were drawn to her out of curiosity so in return she lures them in and then
swiftly rejects them. They would

The Age Of The Middle Class
The whole idea of teenager came during the mid 1920 s also known as the prosperity decade. This was
a time when everything seemed to be going right for the middle class americans. The economy was
booming and for the white middle class things appeared to be going quite well. The theory behind
teenagers was to create a grace period between childhood and adulthood, in which an individual was
able to learn and grow from their experiences. But as the years progress the ease into adulthood started
to become more of a steep cliff rather than the gradual incline (ushistory.org). As a teenager, I believe
that the teenage community is being stereotyped as a lazy and irresponsible generation perceived by
other older generations, but that stereotype is not true. It is illogical to compare one group to another
solely based on out of date ideals. The way we have analyzed teen brains is a correlation that has yet
to be proven. II. Every generation grows up with different obstacles which cannot be compared to
other generations because every person has a different background no matter who they identify as.
Each generation is separated by the events that happened during their lifetime, that is the whole reason
we separate generations in the first place to distinguish them. In the August 2014 Huffington Post

My Experience At The Art Classroom
The cliché and overused posters at the back caught my attention as soon as I entered the art classroom,
making me look at the art teacher in disappointment. My young art teacher walked to her seat at the
front right corner wearing glasses that made her look sixty. The tables in the art room stood in a u
shape, which supposedly made us students more social and creative . The white board in the front of
the room filled with scribbles of drawings used for other classes. I could smell the vanilla scented
candle in the air that the teacher kept at all times on her desk. I walked to my assigned seat at the front
right corner where I saw my friend, Michayla, flash me a smile. All the other seats and desks empty. I
came early.
As soon as I sat at my desk, my friend started gushing about how amazing her weekend was.
Everything she said I, admittedly, ignored. I thought about the quote I read in my favorite book before
I came to class. Whatever you are physically...strong or weak, ill or healthy all those things matter less
than what your heart contains. All those other things, they are the glass that contains the lamp, but you
are the light inside. I shook my head, diverting my attention to the long pointy needles and black
papers that our art teacher put on the center of the table, and took one of the pointy needles. I touched
the sharp part of it as I leaned back onto my chair, still ignoring my friend. Ouch! I accidentally
pinched my index finger with the needle. I sucked on my

Pros And Cons Of Lincoln
Phillip Shaw Paludan, a Kentucky native, claims that President Abraham Lincoln deserves to be
considered the nation s greatest President because he faced the Civil War, our greatest national trauma

freedom for slaves was the indispensable means to saving the Union (Paludan 357); Lincoln s actions
as Commander and Chief and his oratory style achieved this freedom, which preserved the unity of the
nation. Lincoln expanded the role of Commander and Chief, because the war demanded the expansion

Examples Of Class Conflict
Chapter 3
Class Conflicts
Class conflict refers to the struggle of different sections of a society regarding the economic status of
its people. The major element of the class conflict is the inequality among the different sections of
society keeping in view distribution and consumption of natural resources.
To understand this term more effectively we must keep in mind Marx s structure of society in relation
to its major classes, and the struggle between them as a driving force to bring a change in this social
structure. Marx theory doesn t bring an equilibrium or it can t be regarded as a consensus theory. In
fact in the class conflicts the social structure itself was an ingredient in the struggle of classes.
The key to understand above discussed ideas we must know what a class actually is? According to
Karl Marx a class is defined by the ownership of property and social status. Such ownership provides
a person the power to eliminate others from the property and to use it for personal purposes. In
relation to property and status there are three great classes of society: the bourgeoisie, landowners and
the proletariat. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay On 80 s Culture
Culture of the 80s
The 1980s represented a change known as the glory days, something no one has seen since the 1920s.
The exciting fast paced lifestyle is what captured most americans hearts. Life in general brought
something new to society between new consumer goods and expanding cultures. In the end the 80s

Changes in music were inspired by social and political issues at the time. It was most definitely a

Sociology and Religion Essay example
This paper is from a catholic feminist s perceptive that the church, as an institution, is structured as a
pyramid modeled on the patriarchal family with the custom of father right. The patriarchal decision
maker has the power to shape, form and control the poor of the world (McCormick, pg. 240) mirroring
the aspect of the conflict theory. The poor of the world are the people who work for the institution of
the Church controlled by the patriarchal power elite. These established masses of people feel no
control, which cause anxiety and they continue to perform their means of production as a formed unit.

In turn, religion started to desacralize as the patriarchal family modeled for business firms, industry,
government, educational systems and other organization because the un represented people were
learning that the people who make decisions for others make them against nonmembers. Religion and
science affirmed the sacredness of hierarchy and theocracy but today the amount of exploitation by
elite in government and industries question these affirmations and instead of father right it is human
right with the inferior groups claiming what is theirs. Human rights create equal opportunity available
for all races. The more inferior groups realize and recognize the presuppositions of superiority through
social conditioning then the more they can do to demand changes for their civil rights.
The human rights cause in the rise of desacralization of religion relies also on women s roles and
significance in religious sacralization, which was developed out of fear of human extinction while
serving the elite. Women were encouraged to bear children for existence and the church reinforced
sexuality as the common ethic of Western society. Now, since there is an immense population base

Gut Microbiota
Species composition of bacteria in the gut is highly personalised and mostly determined by
environment and diet. The proportion of each species changes throughout life and the elderly have a
significantly different microbiome. The introduction of antibiotics through the course of life alters the
variation and presence of bacteria via elimination, altering the species richness and evenness of the
microbiome.
Studies have identified different genera of bacteria which are present in the microbiome and their role
in nutrient intake. Gut microbiota has 3 main enterotypes Prevotella, Bacteroides and Ruminococcus,
there is a strong correlation between the concentration of each bacterial community and the dietary
constituents. A diet high in carbohydrates and simple sugars would also indicate and reveal a greater
concentration of Prevotella whereas a diet high in protein and animal fats would present a higher
concentration of Bacteroides in the gut. A long term change in the diet would permanently shift the
concentration of bacteria in the gut to accommodate the new nutrient uptake. This would then change
the bacterial barrier in the intestine which could make it more vulnerable due to reduced species
richness.

nutrients. As babies drink breast milk they would obtain bacteria from their mother and thus they
would have a different gut biome to a baby who was fed formula milk as well as the introduction of

Macbeths Power Essay
Throughout reading the play, Macbeth changes a lot from being a man of loyalty and honesty, to a
man of whom is power hungry and greedy. This shows how the more power you receive the more
power you want; which in many cases, such as this one leads to destruction. Many of the choices that
Macbeth made were influenced by the power that he had, and this power began to take over him. This
then lead to greed and destruction of not only others, but himself as well. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;

given new power, he craved more; especially when he stumbled upon the witches. He liked the power
that he had and wanted to gain more, no matter what he has to do to get it. Macbeth had an encounter
with the three witches and they had told him that he will become the next king. Although the witches
did say this it did not mean that it was certain, it was just a possibility. But when Macbeth realized the
opportunity for power he knew he wanted to become the king. This passage was in part of the letter

King Lear Fool
Shakespeare s fools are more than just court jesters. Their purpose is to provide insight and wisdom,
which they often do in a witty manner. In King Lear, by William Shakespeare, the Fool behaves as a
symbol for King Lear s rationality and sanity. Throughout the play, Lear s rationality and sanity
quickly diminishes; causing a transformation into a literal fool. After the storm, Lear s sanity and
rationality completely disappear and Lear completes his transformation into the literal fool. The Fool
is not present for the remainder of the play because Lear no longer has rationality and sanity. In King

The Fool s purpose is to remove Lear from this dream like state by trying to force Lear to face the
reality of his current predicament. When Lear gave away his kingdom to his daughters, he gave up the
right to be treated as a king, which is the reason that Oswald called Lear My lady s father instead of
King Lear (I.iv.74). However, this reminds Lear that he is no longer King Lear, but instead just a
father with little to no power or authority. This realization became too much to bear for Lear, causing
him to behave irrationally by striking Oswald. In this situation, Lear was being moronic for striking
Oswald; since he, by technicality, did not own any property and reduced himself to existing as only a
father instead of a property owning king. Lear willingly gave up all rights as a king. Therefore, he
gave up all rights to be treated as royalty making his actions toward Oswald, who gave Lear the
respect he deserves, foolish. After this irrational action the Fool, Lear s rationality, reappears to remind
Lear that he had no right to strike Oswald and calls Lear a bitter fool since he gave away all other
titles (I.iv.133,138). This scolding shows that the Fool is the symbol for Lear s rationality and as Lear
s rationality, the Fool is required to humble Lear when he forgets his place. Lear rationally knows that
he was foolish when he gave up all of his rights to be treated like a king. Therefore, Lear does not
argue against the Fool when he brazenly reminds Lear that he may be a Fool , but Lear is nothing
(I.iv.175,176). Lear is behaving irrationally because he is unable to accept that he no longer holds any
power or prestige. Since the Fool is the symbol for Lear s rationality it would only make sense that
only he would directly remind Lear of his current

Example Of Case Study Oedema
Outline of case and Objectives
The case that this literature review deals with is the management of a 44 year old female patient
presenting with signs and symptoms of pulmonary oedema. She has a cardiac history of having angina
and left sided heart failure. She had also experienced pulmonary oedema about 2 months prior to this
ambulance call out and while she was being treated in hospital for the pulmonary oedema she had a
pleural tap inserted as she presented with a pleural effusion. Chronic medications prescribed to this
patient are isordil, asprin (300mg daily) and Lasix (to which she occasionally defaults off of).
Pulmonary oedema results when there is an accumulation of excess fluid in the interstitial and alveolar

enough information out there on each topic individually, but there are not many that I could find that

that I found relevant was the comparison of all three drugs used in the treatment of pulmonary oedema
namely nitroglycerine, morphine sulphate and furosemide. In this study the authors compared four
treatment protocols in patients with presumed cardiogenic pulmonary oedema and classed tem into
different groups, depending on which drug protocol they received. They were then able to compare the
results, the adverse effects and the success rates of the different drug protocols and make certain

Analysis Of The Book The Night By F. Scott Fitzgerald
God, you do not know how happy I am to go home! Oh I should probably introduce myself. Hello I
am Katrina Potter. Most call me Kat unless they want to be hexed. Potter you may ask? Sadly I am
James little sister and by little I mean five minutes and thirty seven seconds younger. Yes we are twins.
By coming home I mean I am moving back to England from Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and
Wizardry, located in America. Why did I go there you may ask? Mum and Dad thought it was best the
James and I took some time apart due to the fact that we got into a little TOO much trouble in our
early stages of youth. I got kicked out of Ilvermorny. I guess I haven t grown out of it. By the sounds
of it neither has James. He always writes me about his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How much longer will it take Mum to get here, I have been sitting in the hall for a good ten minutes.
Sitting still is extremely hard for me. I must be constantly doing something with my hands or I wouldn
t be able to relax for long. I wait another five minutes, passing time by folding and unfolding a piece
of parchment I had in the pocket of my uniform. I sighed and glanced at the door hoping it would
open. Strangely enough it did.
Miss Katrina, you may come in now. Headmistress Lang called in her usual calm voice. I got up from
the chair I was sitting upon and quickly made my way into her office. Sitting in one of the two chairs
across the desk was my Mum. Let s just say she didn t look happy. Katrina, you can have a seat next to
your mother. I sat down in silence. Headmistress Lang explained to my mother what I had done and
how the school could not keep her due to some policy and that was that.
Thank you again for meeting up with us on such short notice, Mrs. Potter. Headmistress Lang smiled,
shaking Mum s hand.
Please call me Nora, and thank you for having us. I am very sorry for the trouble my daughter has
caused. Mum replied with a quick smile and shake of a hand.
I had the house elf s pack up Katrina s stuff and it has been sent to your home. Headmistress Lang
explained to us. Have a safe trip home. With that we stepped into the fireplace and flooed home. We
came out of the fireplace in the grand hall of

Hanukkah Research Paper
Hanukkah is the Jewish eight day winter festival of lights, Celebrated with lightings and more. The
Greeks tried to take over but failed because of the Jews stopped them. They eat fried foods to
celebrate the Holy oil. Kids like to play a game with a top with letters on it. Hanukkah is celebrated
because of what happened in the past when the Syrian Greeks wanted to rule the Jews. ???????To
honor the Holy oil, Jewish people eat foods fried in oil. Latkes or potato pancakes paired with
applesauce and sour cream was one thing they ate. Or jelly filled doughnuts are favorites at Hanukkah
celebrations is another. They make this food for other reasons too. The first is to honor the Holy oil
and another reason is because they like to make and eat these fried foods. Dairy food wasn t popular
until the middle ages came, so they only had fried foods at first. Another reason they eat these types of
food is because they have these weird diets, that most people can t understand.
Jewish children play with a dreidel, four sided spinning top with Hebrew letters on each side. The
letters spell an acronym for A great miracle happened here and include Nun, Gimel, Hei and shin. In

As You Go Creating A Missional Culture Of Gospel Centered...
Book Review: As you Go Creating a Missional Culture of Gospel Centered Students Alvin L. Reid
explains and covers multiple ideas, issues, subjects, and solutions pertaining to missional student
ministry. Throughout reading the book it is evident that Reid is not only extremely passionate about
the missional aspect of the student ministry, but also the reasoning behind this aspect. Reid s chapters
recognize the issues that many student ministries deal with and how the ministry can go from just an
event to a mission ministry. Throughout this book review I will summarize the content and highlight
the key components that Reid speaks about. In regards to what Reid explains about a missional student
ministry I will speak of how it will affect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also claims, This book is not intended to focus on what is wrong in student ministry, however, but
to offer a new (or renewed) way of thinking (Reid 18). Here Reid clearly states what the purpose of
this book is and not to necessarily fix the ministry, but rather enhance it and provide a new way of
thinking about missions. Reid then goes on throughout chapter one to explain in detail the purposes in
missional ministry and why. In this section Reid explains that the students today as a generation are
leaning toward challenges and making a difference. He even goes as far as defining this word,
Missional: to see the world with the eyes of a missionary, to think like a missionary and to relate to
others as a missionary with a message of the gospel. In short, life is ministry. Make disciples as you go
(Reid 27). Reid goes on explaining the missional shift that has happened in the western church and
how this can impact the student ministry as a whole. This idea of missional ministry in the student
ministry is simply not in perspective and Reid covers this. He goes throughout many chapters
explaining how the bar has been set too low and why this missional aspect is not being brought up in
student ministry. Reid then centers in on the gospel in chapter two and what this means as it impacts
the missional ministry. The main point of this is so that one understands that the reasoning of the
gospel is not solely

Characteristics Of Steve Jobs
There are numerous flaws in the concept that a person s culture, family, generation, and upbringing are
more accurate determinants of success when compared to that persons traits such as personality,
ambition, and intelligence. While circumstances being conducive to their needs helps, anyone with
enough determination can rise above obstacles and become an outlier. Arguments against this, often
have faults. There are many clear examples of driven, brilliant people, of all backgrounds, reaching
great heights. One published believer of successful people being a result of their constraints and
opportunities alone, is Malcolm Gladwell. In his book Outliers he highlights several aspects of the
histories of well known identities. He argues ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yes, it is true that some facts don t change with time. However, he was citing a psychology based
experiment and this field has transformed quite a lot in ninety years. At this point, most could observe
that this author has a habit of referencing anecdotal evidence as opposed to relevant and proven
research. In a New York Times review of Outliers it is stated that Gladwell s hypotheses, pivot
deceptively around various anecdotes and studies that are selective in the extreme... (Kakutani). Even
so, these stories do show an undeniable relationship between a person s achievements, and their
unique qualities. This connection is also distinguishable in much less specific examples. In addition to
the aforementioned cases, evidence of success depending on personality, ambition, and intelligence, as
opposed to circumstance, is seen many places. Firstly, if family and culture were playing such a
definitive role in the lives of the highly acheived, then all siblings of someone at the top of the ladder
should also excel. Obviously this is not always the case. On a similar note, if financial status was the
main contributor to excellent standing, then all the tales of people giving up on what may seem to be
the more profitable route, and instead taking the road less traveled out of passion, would end in
failure. Yet, they do not. It is unreasonable to think that there is some perfect set of conditions, where,

Waves Of Debates Within Feminism
Gender 208
Assignment 1: Waves of Debates within Feminism
Feminism, in simple terms, refers to a collective desire to end the oppression of women. Because
oppression takes various forms and affects those who are victim to it in a number of different, yet
often connected ways; feminism should accordingly be regarded as a multifaceted set of movements
working towards multiple aims and ends. Which is to say that feminism is less a single movement
concerned with the oppression of women, and more a gathering of movements concerned with a
number of oppressive structures, working towards the eradication of domination period. Analysing the
works of Mimi Mariuncci (2010), Audre Lorde (1984), and Rosemarie Garland Thomson (2002) this
paper will attempt to answer the question of why intersectionality is imperative to feminist discourse
and Praxis, exploring the different areas in which the oppression of women interests with the
oppression, marginalisation, and suppression of other minority groups, i.e. queer people, people of
colour, people with disabilities, old people, poor people, transgendered, and gender non conforming
people etc.
In the pursuit of inclusivity and intersectionality feminist discourse has been tasked with
acknowledging and addressing all forms of oppression as a logic of domination. A theory coined by
ecofeminist philosopher Karen Warren which refers to a way of understanding and communicating
with the world, and it s inhabitants, in a way that is structured

From the SWOT framework applied to SABMiller (see appendix 1) it is seen that the main strength of
SABMiller lies in its skills to succeed in developing markets like that of several African, European,
South American and Asian countries. This experience of handling and managing successful businesses
in emerging markets is a key internal capability that is a source of its competitive advantage. Also
from the list of strengths and weaknesses it can be observed that SABMiller s strengths in having a
geographically diversified business with its wide premium brand portfolio and strong supply chain
along with excellent operational productivity capabilities are countered by weaknesses as a result of
overemphasis on developing markets and premium brands. The external analysis reveals opportunities
in the developing economies and new markets like China, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and several
markets in Africa and Europe. But the significant number of threats in the external environment is a
critical area that SABMiller has a clear focus upon to minimise the

The Two-Track Mind
Thinking critically, possessing a biopsychosocial approach and a two track mind, as well as exploring
human strengths continuously emerge in psychology as the four main ideas. Critical thinking refers to
inspecting any ideas given and not automatically believing those concepts. The biopsychosocial
approach discusses human conduct and the perspectives of its examination. Those perspectives
include biologically, psychologically, and socially. Every human shares a similar biology, but
differences arise psychologically and socially. The latter two views differ due to one s experiences,
social interactions, and the culture with which one identifies with. The two track mind refers to the
way the mind stores and sorts information. The human mind does this two ways, knowingly and
unknowingly, hence the term two track mind . Finally, exploring strengths ... Show more content on

Additionally, the relationship between the number of miles driven and the condition of the vehicle s
tires represents a negative correlation because as the number of miles driven increases, the state of the
tires decreases. Furthermore, the relationship between hair color and number of vehicles owned
represents a zero correlation because one has no relation to the other.
Correlation does not provide proof that one variable causes another because it merely predicts the
likelihood of the relationship. Although two ideas can relate to each other, other factors can also
produce those two original elements. For example, low self esteem could lead to depression, just as
depression could lead to low self esteem. Additionally, life experiences and hereditary traits could lead
to both low self esteem and depression (Myers and DeWall 17). In brief, correlation can give some
insight on how two ideas relate to one another, but it does not support a

Greek Architecture Symbolism
Ancient Greek architecture was very intricately made and well thought out. The Greeks used different
methods and reasonings behind their architecture because they made sure that their pieces were
exquisitely made to represent the things they thought were important. They valued their Gods and
their worship of the Gods. It was important for them to always represent or have symbolic meaning
behind all of their architectural designs. There are many hidden symbols that are involved in Greek
architecture like trees, trophies, leaves, hair, and sacrifices to name a few. Greek architecture includes
these hidden symbols to worship Gods, and to represent culture in their pieces. First, Greek
architecture was mainly created to give respect to Gods and create worship areas for the Gods.
Representing and respecting Greek Gods appropriately was considered important to the Greek people
during this time. A very early Greek architectural example of showing respect towards the Gods, was
when trees were used as the first temples as a place of worship. As expressed by Pliny, The Trees
formed the first temples of the Gods. (Pliny). Trees held a valuable position to the Greeks because
they were classified as sacred and even representational to certain Gods. The Greeks believed that
trees had relation to certain Gods. For example, The God Zeus s sacred tree was the oak tree, while,
the olive tree was the Goddess Athena s sacred tree. The olive tree was the first temple for Athena,
which was

  • 2. Why Is Beowulf Epic Or Awesome Beowulf is an epic poem, but you already know that. But by modern terms, I would definitely classify this poem as epic or awesome . I don t quite understand why, but I really enjoyed this poem. It was very easy to read. I was able to comprehend all of the text without any trouble. From the beginning of the story, you know that the heroic character is going to have some divine motivations. Beowulf will become the idol of Geats, he will gain much glory and respect and a little bit of fame. Clearly, these were his motivations for all of his courageous acts and he certainly fulfilled his expectations. When Beowulf agrees to battle Grendel, he is purely accepting the challenge because he feels it is his moral obligation. He knows it is his duty to defend and protect the citizens of Geats. Obviously, no one honestly wants to fight a massive lizard man, who can crush thirty men at once, but hey, let s let Beowulf give it a shot. Surprisingly, Beowulf tells the King that he wants to fight the monster with his bare hands; grappling, would be a better way to describe his intentions. I am still not completely sure why Beowulf chose to deny any and all kinds of weapons, but his insane game plan ends up working, so I guess that s all that truly matters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oddly enough, Beowulf chose to wear armor and use weapons for this battle. Why would he do that? He had already gained some glory for slaying the monster Grendel. Fortunately, Beowulf knows that women fight a lot differently than men. Women know how to use our minds in battle. We can deceive you in front of your very eyes, and you still wouldn t know what is going on. Girls fight dirty, and Beowulf is prepared. At this point in his life, Beowulf is ready to achieve some fame. Because who doesn t want to profit from some infamy? He is already seen as the great hero of Geats, so why not progress to the village s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Well that answer is simple, its going to the boy s varsity saint s puck squad! Remember no matter how much money you put in the only thing that is going to make a team successful in the athletic ability and love for the game, which is made very apparent with this group of boys. This team is very loving and accepting towards one another. It is a very diverse bunch, with tall, short, big boned , thin, American, Canadian, Korean, ½ American and ½ Canadian, Finnish. • 4. Techniques Used by Clarinet Players Technique is very important for all musicians of all types, especially for Clarinet players. Many of the techniques are vital for a great musician to understand. Things such as embouchure, vibrato and tone effects are all things that are required by the musician. I will be investigating the embouchure and how a correct one will substantially increase your prowess as a woodwind, particularly clarinet, player. The clarinet is a woodwind instrument that has a single reed mouthpiece. Johann Christoph Denner invented the clarinet in Germany around the turn of the 18th century by adding a register key to the earlier Chalumea. Having a correct embouchure is vitally important to playing woodwind instruments. Structure 1. Embouchure. 2. Different types of embouchures in different people. 3. Research into different kinds of embouchure and how other people do it. 4. Synthesis of why it is very important to have an good embouchure. With the woodwinds, the sound is generated by a reed and not with the lips. The embouchure is therefore based on sealing the area around the reed and the mouthpiece. This makes sure that there is no air escaping from either side of the mouthpiece when the musician is blowing. A reed instrument works by having the musician blowing a steady breath of air over the reed and through the mouthpiece. The vibrations of the reed are what produce the sound that makes up the notes. The harder or stronger the air is passing over the reed the higher the pitch of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Inferno And The Divine Comedy Inferno (c. 1314) serves as the first part of Dante Alighieri s poem Divine Comedy which is a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. On a broader level, Divine Comedy serves as an allegory for the journey of the soul towards God through the created earth. Inferno and the Divine Comedy serve as a form of scholastic thought, the rational study of religion, as Dante draws on medieval theology to share the modern view on God and the afterlife. This essay explores Dante s perception of the universe and man s place in it. Throughout Inferno, Dante provides a unique perspective on his view of sin and justice these views a direct result of Dante s own beliefs and the current political situation in Florence. A major theme that Inferno underscores is that God represents justice and love. His justice can be seen in Hell as the magnitude of each sin corresponds to the punishment one will receive in the afterlife. Throughout Divine Comedy, Dante shares a vision of an ordered universe where everyone is where they belong. The structure of the universe, specifically Hell, can be seen as a representation of God s love for His people. Sin is a violation of divine perfection and without God s love; everyone would be punished for their sin. As Dante and the reader are taken throughout Inferno, we can see that Hell is just another creation of God s justice and love as each sinner is punished according to how contradictory their sin is to God s will. The structure of Divine Comedy is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tim Hortons though is different, coffee isn t produced in Canada like it is in places such as Brazil. Which begs the question how did Tim Hortons manage to become a staple of Canadian heritage? Well the answer lies in how it marketed itself to the regular everyday Canadian. A key part of the Canadian identity is the that of being hard working and being low key. When you look inside a Tim Hortons you see exactly that, mostly brown cups, and a brown aesthetic that seems like it is minding its own business. Unlike a company like Starbucks, Tim Hortons is not plagued by an urban pretentious because even in their locations in downtown metropolitan areas like Toronto, they keep their low key and quiet aesthetic (Cronack). Furthermore, Tim Hortons while embracing Canadian values does not out right announce itself as such. If they did announce themselves as hard working and humble , many canadians would not embrace it because many would feel that if you refer to yourself as humble you lose whatever humility that you had. So Tim Hortons decides to keep its mundane and humble aesthetic by just being there. They are just a coffee shop that is a part of everyday life for Canadians, no flash, no bells and whistles, just a coffee shop that s there everyday to serve your average everyday Canadian. In ... Clemencia s rooted values play a critical role in this story. Growing up, Clemencia witnessed her mother s acts of adultery during the time that her father was sick and debilitated. Most daughters shift their attention to their mothers for direction about womanhood, but it is possible she felt that she never had her mother there in that sense. The Language in The Red Room by H G Wells and The Signalman by Charles Dickens Throughout, The Signalman has suspense and the tension is gripping, as the author, Dickens, has used exceedingly good description in the language and the setting is just perfect. Dickens had an advantage when writing this story as there were similarities between himself and some of the characters; since he had been involved in a train accident himself. He creates mystery in this book very well. He uses repetition in the book, as the phrase, Halloa! Below there! was repeated at least three times in the story. • 14. The Discovery Of The Fossil Species Essay Is there a subspecies of Homo sapiens that lived complete opposite lives as us? Did we cause them to go extinct or did we live and interbreed with them? I will be discussing aspects of the species Homo neanderthalensis who lived alongside Homo sapiens and may have even interbred with them. I will be focusing specifically on the discovery of the fossil species, where the species is in the human ancestral tree, anatomical similarities and differences with Homo sapiens, and the lifestyle and extinction of the Neanderthals. The first fossil found, named Neanderthal 1, was found in 1856 in Germany. The name Homo neanderthalensis was suggested by Geologist William King, because the fossil was found in the Feldhofer Cave of the Neander Valley in Germany and tal (a modern version of thal) means valley in German. (Smithsonian) Some people refer to the species as Neandertal, with no h, to reflect modern German spelling. Several years after Neanderthal 1 was found, scientists realized that earlier discoveries in Engis, Belgium (1829) and Forbes Quarry, Gibraltar (1848) were also Neanderthals, putting the actual discovery date at 1829. Other key specimens are Le Moustier, France (of a 45,000 year old skull which had Neanderthal features in an adolescent individual proving these characteristics were genetic and not developed during their life), Lagar Velho in Abrigo do Lagar Velho, central western Portugal (a 24,000 year old skeleton described as a Neanderthal Homo sapien hybrid), ... Thucydides wrote the unfinished History of the Peloponnesian War. In a period with scarce evidence available, Thucydides single narrative acts as the sole artefact that provides information regarding the war. His History narrates the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, and also recounts the foreign relations military and diplomatic activities of Athens and various Greek states during the fifth century BC. With his History as the main source, the question of whether Thucydides may be bias in his writing towards Athens emerges. However, through examining Thucydides account of the war, one can argue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thucydides depicts Pericles s funeral oration early on in his History, which honored Athenians strength and sense of duty as well as believing in the greatness of Athens. Everything Pericles spoke of in the oration glorified Athens achievements, aiming to raise morale during the state of war. In his praises, Pericles acknowledges Athens as an exemplar state to other Greeks and declares in short, I [Pericles] say that as a city we are the school of Hellas, while I doubt if the world can produce a man who, where he has only himself to depend upon, is equal to so many emergencies, and graced by so happy a versatility, as the Athenian (Thuc. 2.41). One may argue that the oration illustrates the epitome of Thucydides support for Athens, as he did not record the speech verbatim and could have instilled his own views. Nevertheless, as demonstrated in other instances, Thucydides is just as critical of Athens as praising. In the Melian Dialogue that took place in 416 BC, Athens essentially imposed its vast power on the small island of Melos. Athenians threatened Melians to surrender and pay tribute, or suffer the repercussions as they eloquently stated, in terms of practicality the dominant exact what they can and the weak concede what they must (Thuc. 5.89). The Melians refusal to obey to Athens demands culminated to a siege that ended in the Athenian assembly voting to mercilessly execute all the men and enslave all women and children. The once glorified portrayal of Athens succumbs to a decline of moral values and transforms into one of an oppressive state with an entitled mentality to conquer other Greeks, comparable to the traits of tyrants in their hunger to acquire more power. Therefore, anthropologists do more than simply document the enormous variations in human cultures by identifying and describing the commonalities of humans amid the great diversity, which are the regularities found in all cultural contexts regardless of how different those contexts might appear at first glance (Ferraro, 2005). Anthropologists have traditionally used a qualitative research approach to study human behaviors in different cultures. Such an approach is well suited to many of the complex questions confronting researchers interested in quality and culture. Qualitative research, more than just a set of data collection methods, is an approach that seeks to understand events, activities, norms and values from the perspective of the people who are being studied, anthropologists refer this way of research as the Emic approach. This ever changing people s history is left in the few remaining volumes the works of comedy, tragedy, and satire (____________90) . One of the earliest Greek records of satire can be traced to around 500 B.C. Early Greek satires ( Satyrs or Satyric dramas ) were in essence comedy plays, usually fairly bawdy, and often involved men dressed as Satyrs (clearly the root of the word Satyric). Satyrs were mythological creatures with the upper half of a man and the bottom half of a goat or horse. Satyr was one of three forms of Athenian drama, nestling comfortably as a new genre alongside tragedy and comedy. Satyr was quickly developed between the writers Pratinas, Aristeas, and Aeschylus. These new Satyrs did not begin life as fully developed features they were instead used as interval pieces to relieve the seriousness of tragic plays. These comic pieces, counterpointing and parodying the tragedy, became extremely popular devices and led to the extension of the form. Ancient Greek comedy was one of the final three principal dramatic forms in the theatre of classical Greece (the others being tragedy and the satyr play). Athenian comedy is conventionally divided into three periods, Old Comedy, Middle Comedy, and New Comedy. Old Comedy survives today largely in the form of the eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes, while Middle Comedy is largely lost, i.e. preserved only in relatively short fragments in authors such as Athenaeus of Naucratis. The Pursuit Of A Happy Life Essay It is common sense that all the human beings would like to live a happy life and they will spare no efforts in order to realize the purpose of really living a happy life in the end. However, different people have different definitions toward what a happy life is and they tend to have different standards as for how a life is that can be regarded as a happy life. There is no doubt that people will then try different means in order to pursue a happy life based on their definition toward what a happy life is. Therefore, the following will talk about the pursuit of a happy life from the perspectives of both Dalai Lama in The Art of Happiness and Viktor E. Frankl in Man s Searching for Meaning, during which the experiences of some characters from the film Forrest Gump will be applied as evidence. Generally speaking, the pursuit of a happy life in the minds of Dalai Lama and Viktor E. Frankl can be achieved via experiencing sufferings and adversity. It is hoped that this analysis can help people understand what a happy is from a different point of view. The Pursuit of a Happy Life First and foremost comes Dalai Lama s idea toward how to pursue a happy life. Charles excels at the rigorous trainings, while Adam struggles and begins to develop a hatred for his father. As Cyrus pushes Adam harder, a favoring of one son over the other is apparent. This was a time when everything seemed to be going right for the middle class americans. The economy was booming and for the white middle class things appeared to be going quite well. The theory behind teenagers was to create a grace period between childhood and adulthood, in which an individual was able to learn and grow from their experiences. But as the years progress the ease into adulthood started to become more of a steep cliff rather than the gradual incline (ushistory.org). As a teenager, I believe that the teenage community is being stereotyped as a lazy and irresponsible generation perceived by other older generations, but that stereotype is not true. It is illogical to compare one group to another solely based on out of date ideals. The way we have analyzed teen brains is a correlation that has yet to be proven. II. Every generation grows up with different obstacles which cannot be compared to other generations because every person has a different background no matter who they identify as. The major element of the class conflict is the inequality among the different sections of society keeping in view distribution and consumption of natural resources. To understand this term more effectively we must keep in mind Marx s structure of society in relation to its major classes, and the struggle between them as a driving force to bring a change in this social structure. Marx theory doesn t bring an equilibrium or it can t be regarded as a consensus theory. In fact in the class conflicts the social structure itself was an ingredient in the struggle of classes. The key to understand above discussed ideas we must know what a class actually is? According to Karl Marx a class is defined by the ownership of property and social status. It seems as if the power and greed now had full control over him, he is doing things that he wouldn t do when he did not have all this power. This is the first time that we see this side of Macbeth, the side of him that is greedy for power and is willing to kill the king to do so. In the beginning of the play the thought of being Thane of Cawdor never even crossed his mind, and by no means being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. King Lear Fool Shakespeare s fools are more than just court jesters. Their purpose is to provide insight and wisdom, which they often do in a witty manner. In King Lear, by William Shakespeare, the Fool behaves as a symbol for King Lear s rationality and sanity. Throughout the play, Lear s rationality and sanity quickly diminishes; causing a transformation into a literal fool. After the storm, Lear s sanity and rationality completely disappear and Lear completes his transformation into the literal fool. The Fool is not present for the remainder of the play because Lear no longer has rationality and sanity. In King Lear, King Lear s rationality is physically manifested as the Fool; therefore, instead of King Lear partaking in any rational behavior, the Fool ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Fool s purpose is to remove Lear from this dream like state by trying to force Lear to face the reality of his current predicament. When Lear gave away his kingdom to his daughters, he gave up the right to be treated as a king, which is the reason that Oswald called Lear My lady s father instead of King Lear (I.iv.74). However, this reminds Lear that he is no longer King Lear, but instead just a father with little to no power or authority. This realization became too much to bear for Lear, causing him to behave irrationally by striking Oswald. In this situation, Lear was being moronic for striking Oswald; since he, by technicality, did not own any property and reduced himself to existing as only a father instead of a property owning king. Lear willingly gave up all rights as a king. Therefore, he gave up all rights to be treated as royalty making his actions toward Oswald, who gave Lear the respect he deserves, foolish. After this irrational action the Fool, Lear s rationality, reappears to remind Lear that he had no right to strike Oswald and calls Lear a bitter fool since he gave away all other titles (I.iv.133,138). This scolding shows that the Fool is the symbol for Lear s rationality and as Lear s rationality, the Fool is required to humble Lear when he forgets his place. Lear rationally knows that he was foolish when he gave up all of his rights to be treated like a king. Therefore, Lear does not argue against the Fool when he brazenly reminds Lear that he may be a Fool , but Lear is nothing (I.iv.175,176). Lear is behaving irrationally because he is unable to accept that he no longer holds any power or prestige. Since the Fool is the symbol for Lear s rationality it would only make sense that only he would directly remind Lear of his current ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout reading the book it is evident that Reid is not only extremely passionate about the missional aspect of the student ministry, but also the reasoning behind this aspect. Reid s chapters recognize the issues that many student ministries deal with and how the ministry can go from just an event to a mission ministry. He also claims, This book is not intended to focus on what is wrong in student ministry, however, but to offer a new (or renewed) way of thinking (Reid 18). Here Reid clearly states what the purpose of this book is and not to necessarily fix the ministry, but rather enhance it and provide a new way of thinking about missions. Reid then goes on throughout chapter one to explain in detail the purposes in missional ministry and why. In this section Reid explains that the students today as a generation are leaning toward challenges and making a difference. He even goes as far as defining this word, Missional: to see the world with the eyes of a missionary, to think like a missionary and to relate to others as a missionary with a message of the gospel. In short, life is ministry. Make disciples as you go (Reid 27). Reid goes on explaining the missional shift that has happened in the western church and how this can impact the student ministry as a whole. This idea of missional ministry in the student ministry is simply not in perspective and Reid covers this. He goes throughout many chapters explaining how the bar has been set too low and why this missional aspect is not being brought up in student ministry. Reid then centers in on the gospel in chapter two and what this means as it impacts the missional ministry. The main point of this is so that one understands that the reasoning of the gospel is not solely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Waves Of Debates Within Feminism Gender 208 Assignment 1: Waves of Debates within Feminism Feminism, in simple terms, refers to a collective desire to end the oppression of women. Because oppression takes various forms and affects those who are victim to it in a number of different, yet often connected ways; feminism should accordingly be regarded as a multifaceted set of movements working towards multiple aims and ends. Which is to say that feminism is less a single movement concerned with the oppression of women, and more a gathering of movements concerned with a number of oppressive structures, working towards the eradication of domination period. Analysing the works of Mimi Mariuncci (2010), Audre Lorde (1984), and Rosemarie Garland Thomson (2002) this paper will attempt to answer the question of why intersectionality is imperative to feminist discourse and Praxis, exploring the different areas in which the oppression of women interests with the oppression, marginalisation, and suppression of other minority groups, i.e. queer people, people of colour, people with disabilities, old people, poor people, transgendered, and gender non conforming people etc. In the pursuit of inclusivity and intersectionality feminist discourse has been tasked with acknowledging and addressing all forms of oppression as a logic of domination. • 50. Greek Architecture Symbolism Ancient Greek architecture was very intricately made and well thought out. The Greeks used different methods and reasonings behind their architecture because they made sure that their pieces were exquisitely made to represent the things they thought were important. They valued their Gods and their worship of the Gods. It was important for them to always represent or have symbolic meaning behind all of their architectural designs. There are many hidden symbols that are involved in Greek architecture like trees, trophies, leaves, hair, and sacrifices to name a few. Greek architecture includes these hidden symbols to worship Gods, and to represent culture in their pieces. First, Greek architecture was mainly created to give respect to Gods and create worship areas for the Gods. Representing and respecting Greek Gods appropriately was considered important to the Greek people during this time. A very early Greek architectural example of showing respect towards the Gods, was when trees were used as the first temples as a place of worship. As expressed by Pliny, The Trees formed the first temples of the Gods. (Pliny). Trees held a valuable position to the Greeks because they were classified as sacred and even representational to certain Gods. The Greeks believed that trees had relation to certain Gods. For example, The God Zeus s sacred tree was the oak tree, while, the olive tree was the Goddess Athena s sacred tree. The olive tree was the first temple for Athena, which was ...
