Gandhi did not initially demand freedom for India in 1920 because he believed in bringing changes to society first, such as equality and removing evil practices, before independence could have true meaning. He also had faith in the British at that time. By 1942, Gandhi started demanding freedom after the failure of the Cripps Mission proposals and the formation of the Indian National Army, as his earlier efforts like civil disobedience in the 1930s did not achieve his goals for India. Gandhi was visionary in that he wanted stability for India and did not want it to become a battlefield among world powers after British rule.
