Mahatma Gandhi was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule in India. He was born in 1869 in Porbandar, India and assassinated in 1948. Gandhi advocated for non-violent civil disobedience and helped organize farmers and others to protest oppressive taxation and discrimination through peaceful means. He spent time in prison for his activism and was ultimately assassinated for his leadership of the independence movement.
