Alternative App Markets

Presented by Abhinav Gupta,
Lead Developer and CEO at
    Game Scorpion Inc.
Why Alternative Markets?
Currently 2 Major Known Markets in
GENERAL, iOS (Apple App Store) and
Android (Google Play Market)
Alternative Markets have LESS
competition
Think of a Strip Plaza vs. a Shopping Mall
Some companies offer Benefits for Porting
(Free Developer Accounts, Money,
Devices, etc.)
What Alternative Markets Exist?
 Mainly Android Alternative Markets
 Blackberry
 WebOS (was HP now LG)
 Microsoft
 Mac/Linux/Windows PC
 WEB (Facebook/Browser/Firefox OS)
Tested Profitable Markets
Amazon (Kindle Fire) Android Market
Barnes and Noble (Nook) Android Market
Blackberry (BB10/Playbook) Qt/QNX
Market (With Android to Blackberry porting
tools)
Unprofitable Markets
      (THIS CAN CHANGE)
Samsung Android Store (WHY? Many users of
Samsung Devices use the Google Play Market
App over the Samsung Market/Store App) -
http://www.100percentindie.com/ (Samsung and
EA)
HP TouchPad (Dead/Old market), HOWEVER
WebOS now is owned by LG which will change
the whole App world again!
Other Markets to Watch For
Console Markets (OUYA – Android Game
Market)
Appliance/Non-Mobile Device Markets
(Samsung and LG Appliances, etc. all
running on WebOS/Android. Cars, and
various other devices running most likely
an Android based system – Due to lower
cost for Manufacturers to implement
Android OS)
Amazon Tips and Tricks
Amazon is the closest to Apple in the Android Space
Offer many development items similar to apple such as
Game Cirlce for Game Developers, In App Purchasing,
Advertising and much more
The user base primarily consists of students, seniors and
is now expanding to parents/families.
Biggest strength: User Credit cards are on file, and so its
easy for users to purchase apps.
App Sales Volume: I generally make sales comparable
to Apple volume (When comparing PREMIUM sales).
Getting into the charts is much easier!
Amazon offers a Free App A Day promotion on selected
apps to boost downloads even more.
Blackberry Tips
Blackberry holds special porting events
throughout the year. I recommend holding onto
your apps for those. I end up porting to
Blackberry only during these events saving up
my apps, and usually end up getting Playbooks,
Devices, Money and other neat benefits.
Blackberry really takes its time to focus on
developers.
Market Base Demographic: Business Owners
Apps that do Well: Utilities, anything to do with
chat/social/business, Games.
Nook Tips
MASSIVE income here
Nook users are buyers
PREMIUM ONLY MARKET
Market Base Demographic: Women and
Children
Apps that do Well: Childrens Games,
School tools, Parent Apps, Utilities.
How To Test A New Market
After testing 20+ App Markets, I’ve come
up with a 5 step method to test out if a
market is worth investing your time and
money.
Don’t just take Market News as an Official
Indicator of a Market.
How To Test A New Market
1. Do the most MINIMAL cost to entry
(Which is usually a yearly membership
fee) and time to port apps

2. Test 2-3 months worth of SALES
numbers (Actual income)
How To Test A New Market
3. GET A CHEQUE (This confirms that you will get paid
and not taken for a ride by a market)

4. If the numbers make sense, continue, if not EXIT that
market OR attempt other types of apps. (Every market
has a DIFFERENT user base. What works on iOS may
not work on Amazon. Example, our app Car Car Race
Car (That took me 1 hour to make by re-skinning our old
ASRI app) was a flop on iOS, but is now part of the top
200 in ALL NOOK APPS minting me some nice coin!)

5. If the numbers blow you away, then invest in ALL
required items such as dev devices, systems, etc.
Thank You!
