Dungeons & Dragons, conceived by Gary Gygax as a supplement to medieval wargames to add fantasy elements, became one of the earliest role-playing games and inspired many modern games. It began as Chainmail in 1970 with rules for miniature combat. Dave Arneson later introduced narrative roleplaying elements. Gygax and Arneson published D&D as a standalone game through their company TSR in 1974. D&D faced criticism in its early days for supposedly promoting devil worship but gained widespread popularity nonetheless. It has since been produced by many successor companies and become a multi-million dollar franchise.
