10 coolest canine companions in gaming www.gamebasin.com
1. 10 Coolest Canine Companions In
Gaming
http://www.gamebasin.com/news/10-coolest-canine-companions-in-gaming
Dogs have long been considered man’s best friend, and this is especially true in gaming. Fast,
ferocious, and loyal, canines can be better side characters than actual human beings. Despite their
simple nature, most gamers agree that these fluffy sidekicks can be some of the best characters in
the medium. These steadfast companions are easy to understand, fun to have around, and make
for great company on an otherwise lonely journey. Sometimes they exist for purely sentimental
purpose, providing the player company on the long, lonesome road ahead. Other times, they serve
more functional purposes, saving the player on multiple occasions as well as picking up any
valuables they might find along the way. Of course, dogs also have the tendency to incredibly
stubborn‐and at times, just stupid‐but we love them regardless. Compared to the more finicky
companions who might leave your side if you’re getting “too evil”, dogs show an undying loyalty,
fighting by your side to the death, for whatever reason. Regardless of genre, whether it’s a turn‐based
RPG, first person shooter, or survival horror game, there’s no situation that cannot be
improved by adding a puppy. Because who doesn’t love dogs?
10. Ushnar’s Skinned Hound
2. An undead dog without a name, this follower from the Shivering Isles expansion to The Elder Scrolls
IV: Oblivion is a skinned hound with undying loyalty. Upon completing a quest for the Ailurophobic
Orc Ushnar gro‐Shadborgob, he proceeds to give you his “old” dog as a present. A few seconds
later, you’re greeted with a relentless companion who will follow you to the ends of the earth and
beyond, literally. Ushnar’s Skinned Hound will follow you across planes of existence in its never‐ending
quest to protect you from any red dots on your compass. Incredibly, if you fast travel, he
doesn’t travel with you. His speed is cranked up to the max and he follows you to your destination.
That’s right; he will run after you across the map. Whether you want him or not, you’re stuck with
him. There’s no dialogue box, meaning he cannot be told to wait. Whether you want him to or not,
he’s stuck with you until he dies. When he does die however, his twice‐killed corpse will persist in
the world forever, meaning he can be used as a permanent, non‐respawning container. Even in
death, he continues to be useful to this master. That’s some crazy dedication right there.
9. Luna
3. A robotic dog in a digitised city, Luna will aid Red, the protagonist of Transistor, without question.
Available as a skill upon defeating the first boss, Luna is eventually named by the Transistor when
she is found inside a mysterious backdoor leading to a scenic island retreat. Not unlike K‐9
from Fallout 2, Luna is able to move vast distances in a single turn and attack the enemy from
behind. Aside from helping directly in combat, Luna can also be added as an upgrade to another
skill, adding the chance to most other abilities to prevent enemies from respawning. Outside of
combat, the player can frolic on the beach and play with Luna, as it barks and bounces a ball with
its master. If that level of adorable isn’t worthy of a spot on this, nothing is.
8. Riley
Introduced in Call of Duty: Ghosts as the spearhead to the next‐generation, Riley is a fearsome
companion to the Ghosts. First seen during Microsoft’s Xbone conference in 2013, he left a
powerful impression on viewers, instilling confidence into everyone for the next generation.
4. Modelled after a real‐life SEALS dog and fully motion‐captured, this dog is perhaps the most
graphically impressive canine in the history of gaming itself. Despite the cloud of controversy, one
thing remains clear: putting Riley into the game was the “right thing” to do. In‐game, Riley is like
any other A.I. comrade, just less terrible. To aid the player character, he’ll attack nearby enemies,
attack hostile on command, take cover, and even flank the enemy. In addition, Riley can be
controlled directly via a camera in his collar, allowing him to stealth kill enemies ahead of the front
line. Most importantly however, he can single‐handedly take out helicopters. That alone gives him
a spot on this list.
7. The Dog From Fable II
Though his name, personality, and even breed are determined by the player, the dog from Fable
II is always a faithful companion. Whether you’re fighting trolls or looking for treasure, this dog is
there to help out in a pinch. A faithful friend since childhood, it manages to save the Hero of
Bowerstone multiple times throughout his or her life. In order to better serve its master, this loyal
pooch refuses to age, lasting well over two decades for plot reasons. As the player changes their
alignment, whether good or evil, the dog will do the same, emulating their master’s morality.
Unthinking and completely selfless, this dog easily earns a spot on this list.
6. Mabari Hound
5. Depending on your chosen origin, this faithful war hound from Dragon Age: Origins can stick by
your side either from the beginning of the game, sticking with your party throughout your
endeavours to save Thedas from the invading Darkspawn. No matter the danger or moral
implications, your trusty mabari will charge in without hesitation, tanking for your party with fairly
heavy DPS. In addition to striking fear into the hearts of one’s enemies, the mabari is great for a
variety of other useful tasks, including but not limited to: party banter, finding cake, cleaning the
blood of your foes off your face, healing the player slightly, peeing on objects for stat bonuses, and
stealing a witch’s underwear. Really, what more do you want from a dog?
5. Missile
This lovable phantom Pomeranian from Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is good at one thing, and
one thing only: barking. To Missile, there’s no scenario that cannot be improved through barking.
Well, maybe more than that.Aside from barking, this little warrior can rewind time four minutes in
6. order to save the life of someone who has died. Plenty of other dogs on this list have saved lives,
but this one defies time itself in order to save someone who has already died. What’s perhaps most
impressive about Missile however, is its selflessness. Instead of being revived, Missile decided to
remain a ghost to save more people using its new found ghost powers. For these reasons, in
addition to simply being adorable, this ghostly pooch has struck a chord with Japanese and
American players alike, many of whom love the character more than the game’s own protagonist,
and for good reason.
4. Hewie
Trapped in a creepy castle and stalked by sadistic horrors, Fiona’s only hope at escaping Belli Castle
is a single German Shepard: Hewie. What’s really interesting about Haunting Ground’s doggy
deuteragonist is how he can be trained by the player. Whereas Dogmeat in Fallout 3 can be scolded
or praised with no effect, doing so in this game will train your dog, allowing you to teach him what
not to do, and what he should do to greater effect. Furthermore, you can pet this dog, and even
get him to shake hands with you. This might seem like a pointless flavour option, but it’s sadly
missing in most games featuring a dog. Though unconfirmed if they are the same dog, Hewie bears
a strong resemblance to “That dog” from Resident Evil 4, released early the same year as Haunting
Ground. If these dogs are indeed one in the same, that means at some point, Hewie travelled from
Italty to Spain, or vice versa, in order to come to the aid of the protagonists of both games. Not
bad, for a German Shepard.
3. Blade Wolf
7. LQ‐84i, later known as Blade Wolf and simply Wolf, is the first boss of Metal Gear Rising:
Revengance and later, Raiden’s robotic sidekick. After Raiden destroys the dog, Maverick manages
to recover his consciousness, giving him a second chance. Aside from being a talking robotic dog,
part of what makes Wolf so cool is his wide arsenal of weaponry, including heated knives and a
chainsaw. Seriously, he’s a talking robotic dog with a chainsaw. How cool is that? Aside from
scouting ahead for Raiden, Blade Wolf is also playable in his own DLC campaign, where is true
badassery shines. In his own personal campaign, he fights for freedom as he cuts Cyborgs in half
with a chainsaw and tears out their spine for nourishment. Of all the dogs on this list, Blade Wolf
earns his spot for being the only one to fight for freedom with a chainsaw.
2. Dogmeat
Based off the dog from The Road Warrior, Dogmeat is one of the most popular dog followers in
8. gaming. In order to recruit him on your quest to save the Vault, the Vault Dweller has to dress up
like Mel Gibson or by feeding him some tasty iguana‐on‐a‐stick. Once recruited, he’s a permanent
member of your party until death, like Ushnar’s Skinned Hound. Then again, why would you want
him to leave? With such a high movement speed and attack damage, Dogmeat can move across
the battlefield and attack several times in a single turn. Furthermore, unlike Ian, he won’t shoot
you in the back, which is a plus. Although canonically, he’s considered to have died in the Mariposa
Military Base (where many players lose him as a result of the forcefields there) he does get it on
with a bitch at some point, giving birth to a lineage of puppies that would later serve the Lone
Wanderer 116 years later on the other side of the continent. For dedication to the player that spans
over a century and a continent, Dogmeat earns his spot at number two.
1. Koromaru
Before doge, Koromaru was the coolest Shiba Inu around. Based on the famous dog Hachiko (and
Iggy, if you’re a fan of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), Koro‐chan is a member of Specialized
Extracurricular Execution Squad, a secret organisation that hunts down the forces of darkness after
school. Of course, Koromaru doesn’t bite or bark at his enemies to defeat them. Instead, he
summons his Persona Cerberus to attack his enemies with conflagration, or kill them instantly with
the power of darkness. When that won’t work, he relies on the knife he keeps in his teeth, which
is just adorable. “Koroamru earns the number one spot for gaming’s best canine companion for
being the only one with a Persona and social links. You can’t exactly go on a movie date with
Dogmeat. Sure, Blade Wolf has a chainsaw and an arguably better character arc, but Koromaru has
social links and little angel wings! How can you compete with that?
