Dear industry colleague,
After decades of under investment, the Egyptian government is embarking on
an extensive program of infrastructure development to stimulate a stagnant
economy. High on their list of priorities is investment in transport infrastructure
including the modernisation and expansion of the rail and metro networks.
Egypt’s railway is one of the oldest in the MENA region and the aging tracks and
rolling stock are being upgraded to increase efficiency and improve the safety
record of the network, eliminating fatal accidents that have plagued the system
in recent years.
Recently there have been a number of significant announcements by the
Ministry of Transportation and the National Authority for Tunnels detailing over
US$2 billion dollars of funding for rail and metro projects which bodes well for
the industry. However, apart from the financial constraints for development there
are a number of challenges that need to be addressed including operational and
safety considerations as well as design and construction factors.
The Future Rail & Metro Egypt Summit will provide 2 days of high-level
interactive knowledge sharing and debate to facilitate the delivery of a world
class rail and metro network in Egypt.
I look forward to welcoming you to Cairo in April.
Yours faithfully,
Mohaned El-Mahgoub

AFTERNOON WORKSHOP:
The Afternoon Workshop is an add-on to the main summit and therefore you must register for it separately.
Analysing railway maintenance to manage assets and reduce operational expenditure
Managing maintenance is critical for any organisation running machinery but for railways and metro operators this is even more
challenging due to the fact that assets can be located hundreds of miles apart. In addition there are further complications due to
breakdowns in remote locations and public safety considerations. Having a robust and comprehensive maintenance strategy is
essential for the effective running of any modern rail or metro network.
Key learnings from this workshop include:
• Implementing an effective maintenance strategy to maintain operation efficiencies
• Assess the benefits of automated monitoring systems to address faults more quickly
• Examining how supply chain management can keep rolling stock operational
• Protecting the value of your rolling stock and optimising revenues
The published programme is correct at time of printing. However, given the seniority of our speakers and the nature of their roles, speakers may
subsequently substitute or remove themselves from the programme. This is always regrettable, and we will always try to replace the speaker
with a speaker with equivalent insight. For the most up-to-date programme, please visit the event website.

40% of rail accidents occur at railroad crossings. Considering that approximately 70% of these crossings are still manually
operated the chance for errors and further accidents remains high. This discussion between the former deputy minister for
traffic and the former chairman for the Egyptian National Railway will provide insights on what is required to minimise future
accidents and how automated crossings could prove to be the solution to minimising collisions in the future.
Key discussion points:
• Utilising automated crossings to eliminate human error and reduce crossing accidents
• Understanding how automated barriers can reduce delays and improve traffic flow
• Improving sight lines around crossings to allow for better visibility and safer road crossing control
• Educating motorists as to the hazards when crossing rail intersections
