The Giver Arguments
Giver Argument Essay The book Giver by Lois Lowry is about a 13 year boy named Jonas. Jonas was
selected for a special job because he can see beyond such as the color red. The special job is getting
memories of the past such as snow and love from his mentor the Giver. Jonas also receives memories
about death. He sees a release, which is where a worker of the community injects a liquid killing the
person. His dad killed one of the newborn twins because no one in the community can look the same.
Everyone in the community was told that release was kicking someone out of the community and
shipping them to elsewhere. Jonas sees his dad throw the baby in a trash chute. Everyone but Jonas
and the Giver don t have feelings such as love. They don t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jonas rides the same red sled on the soft snow like the first memory the Giver gave him. Jonas knew
that he wouldn t get pain because another memory that the Giver gave him was on a hill with a sled,
but the snow was hard, causing him to fall of the sled and get a lot of pain. The hill Jonas is on right
now is soft, so they won t get hurt. Jonas even said We re almost there, Gabriel, he whispered, feeling
quite certain without quite knowing why. I remember this place, Gabe. And it was true. But it was not
a grasping of a thin and burdensome recollection; this was different. This was something different.
This was something that he could keep. It was a memory of his own(p. 223 224) Even the Christmas
lights were from his memories. When the Giver gave Jonas a memory of love, it was a family
celebrating Christmas with lights and songs. Riding to elsewhere on the sled, Jonas sees Christmas
light and hears Christmas songs like the memories, making him happy. Jonas noticed as they went
downward. downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now. He
knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights
that twinkled from the trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they
celebrated love (p. 225). Jonas knows what to expect because he recieved memories of them from the
Giver. Now he can keep it because

Brady rescues Ben, the three year old. Unfortunately, Ben dies of hypothermia due to the extremely
cold water. Brady is devastated from the incident. Time passes and he finds out his friends were
involved in the incident. Brady wants to know more about this. The story would have been completely
different if this story hadn t taken place in Maryland. The story takes place near the Chesapeake Bay.
Ben and his mom were found in the Corsica River. Since the story takes place during early spring, the

Dove devised a brand positioning strategy. Dove introduced various beauty products through category
extensions.
4.3
Brand meaning makes people to anticipate a particular capability of a brand/product. Prior to the year
2000 Dove differentiated (pg.no. 269 Kotler, Lane, 2008) itself from other soaps with its excellent
moisturizing and cleansing capabilities. In the year 2000 Dove took advantage of brand equity (pg.no.
242 Kotler, Lane, 2008 ) to launch other beauty products. Dove tried to extend the brand meaning
beyond the functional capabilities through Campaign for Real Beauty .
This definitely poses challenges to marketers. Now marketers should not only concentrate on the
functional benefits of the brand they should also concentrate on emotional benefits (pg.no. 241 Kotler,
Lane, 2008 ) of the brand.
4.4
Dove used Buzz and Viral marketing techniques (pg.no. 546 Kotler, Lane, 2008 ) to send the message
of their product to the audience. Dove s started a video campaign Evolve in which normal woman
turns into a billboard model and used Youtube as medium to reach the audience. This kind of
marketing technique gives insight to user responses after viewing the video which is great wealth
information. This marketing technique also grabbed the attention of both people and media. This video
campaign was gone viral by word of mouth and word of mouse (pg.no. 546 Kotler, Lane, 2008). Dove

Reaction Rates of Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric...
Reaction Rates of Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric Acid at Various Concentrations
Introduction/ plan
I am experimenting into the reaction rates of Sodium Thiosulphate and
Hydrochloric acid when under different concentrations.
Both Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric acid are clear solutions but when they react together they
produce a cloudy solution, the solution become so cloudy you cannot see through it. To measure the
rate of reaction I am going to print off a cross from the computer onto a piece of paper, place it under
the beaker with the solution in it and record the time taken for the cross not to be visible.
The Symbol equation for my experiment is:
Na S O (aq) + 2HCl (aq) 2NaCl (aq) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By doing this it is changing the concentration. I am not going to carry out an experiment using 0ml
Sodium Thiosulphate, 10mls Hydrochloric acid and 30mls water, as there would be no Sodium
Thiosulphate for the hydrochloric acid to react with. I will do each experiment 3 times and then work
out averages for each one, as this will give me a more accurate set of results. Altogether including
averages I will have 40 separate results. From repeating each experiment 3times I will be able to
discover any drastic anomalies if there are any.
Preliminary Work
Sodium Thiosulphate (mls) 30
Hydrochloric Acid (mls) 10
Water (mls) 0
Time Taken for Cross to Disappear (mins) 01.10
Prediction
I predict that as the volume of Sodium Thiosulphate decreases the reaction time will increase, as there
will be a lower concentration of
Sodium Thiosulphate for the Hydrochloric

Rom Chocolate Brand
During the communism years, mostly during Nicolae Ceauşescu s reign , when basic products (food)
were rationed and the other products were exported for economical growth, Kandia SA created the
ROM chocolate bar.
More exactly, ROM is a chocolate bar filled with rum cream, a unique product created for the local,
Romanian market, first created in 1964.
The brand, from the begining, was succesful, because of the lack of choices and, of course, the
restrictions which were applied by the communist government.
At that time, ROM was a delight for everyone, and all the Romanians, from children to old people,
knew the brand and identified with it, because they had to.
Therefore, the product now reminds Romanians of their childhood, actually linking ... Show more

Considering that, they are making the purchase on a low involvement level, since the product doesn t
have any kind of meaning for them, being just a low priced chocolate bar with rum cream filling,
which has the Romanian flag on it.
Nowadays, due to the new ROM campaign, the level of involvement is changing , increasing amongst
the young market segment. That s happening because customers are actively participating in this
campaign, which promotes the positive aspects of Romanians around the world.
Therefore, the involvement is being modified by changing the reason for which some people buy the
chocolate bar, actually by making them relate to ROM.
Overall, the new ROM campaign now focuses on „inviting consumers to buy the product and stand up
for what they are and believe in, campaign which seems to be successful, since, according to
www.romaniisuntdestepti.ro, 637.937 Romanians were involved in it so far.
Looking further at ROM, the strength of the brand equity can be acknowledged for a certain segment.
So, the ROM brand represents Romanian quality, history and a gate towards social groups
(nationalists). That is the brand equity created from the begining, which creates awareness. It does not
create awareness for everyone, though, and that is why new strategies are being used, in order to
associate the brand with the

Sir Winston Churchill s We Will Fight At The Beaches

Sir Winston Churchill s We Will Fight at the Beaches
Sir Winston Churchill is my favorite speaker of all times. He was a very prepared, confident and
studied journalist, historian, artist, writer, (he won a Nobel Prize in Literature), an Officer of the UK
army, a statesman and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Even though I did not live through World War II nor am I British, listening to his speeches on
YouTube really gives me the chills. I can easily realize why he was one of the most influential leaders
during the War while being the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. His power to unite and
motivate his people was amazing; many have ever since followed his speaking techniques. He literally
led his country from the brink of defeat to victory with innate leadership abilities. He was a great
strategist as well, the alliance he began with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and General
Secretary Joseph Stalin was key for the imminent defeat of the Axis countries. I firmly believe that for
this reasons Sir Winston Churchill was one of the most if not the most important key characters in the
World War II. I chose this speech because, it effectively brought England together and indirectly
invited the U.S into and alliance who was later key for the victory, it provided a warning on an
imminent German invasion and a big load of encouragement to believe in a future victory. I will be
analyzing the speech

Social Institutions In My Family
How does one grow? How does the outside world affect the personality development of someone?
These can be seen through the social institutions one is involved with. A social institution can be
defined as, a group or social context within which processes of socialization takes place, (Giddens,
Duneier, Appelbaum, and Carr, 2016). Throughout our life time, we move through different social
institutions. All these social institutions influence our personality and how we view the world around
us. Therefore, the social institutions that have shaped my personality are family, education, and work.
My family could be the most dysfunctional family in the whole United States. But without them, I
would not be the compassionate and emotional person I have become today. The first part to this is the
fact that I have a huge extended family. An extended family can be defined as, a family consisting of
two or more generations living either within the same household or very close to each other, (Hodge
2016). In my house at one point it contained, my great grandparents, my grandparents, my parents and
me and my two siblings. And then two towns over, my aunt and 3 cousins. You could say we were
raised by a village. Today, the only ones missing from my house is my great grandparents and my
grandfather. The main reason why my family is structured like this because of my ethnicity. Being
Hispanic, family values are instilled with in us from a young age. An example of this is the fact that I

There is solar energy which is energy that comes from the sun. You can collect solar energy be using
solar panels. Then, the energy can be used to power things. There is wind energy. The wind energy can
be collected by windmills. These windmills can convert wind into energy. There is also hydroelectric
energy. Hydroelectric energy is water flowing that can be turned into energy. Usually, people use dams
to store water inside of a reservoir. All of these types of energy can make electricity using natural
resources.
The East Maui Volcano is made of basalt, which is igneous rock. This volcano was formed from
magma erupting from a volcano. Eventually, this volcano will erode because of weathering and turn to
sediment. Sediment is small particles of matter that gets transferred to another place. Solar energy is
the energy from the sun that causes the weather. The weather makes weathering happen which causes
rocks to break down. Next, it will compact and cement to form sedimentary rock. Compacting and
cementing is when the rocks get pushed together to form a rock. Gravity moves the sediment like in
rockslides, mudslides, or waterfalls. Chemical energy helps compact and cement the sediment to form
rocks. Then, the rocks will get pulled deep into the Earth. It will turn into metamorphic rock due to
heat and pressure. Metamorphic rock is rocks that were once sediment, but now changed. The rocks
will melt partially because of the heat.

A Summary Of The Injury In The Glass Castle
In Jeannette Walls s memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette and her siblings are constantly plagued with
various accidents and injuries, more so than typical children would be. Her parents have a carefree and
lenient approach to parenting, oftentimes leaving the children to fend for themselves or in perilous
situations. In The Glass Castle, Jeannette recounts some of the injuries she and her siblings suffer, the
reaction her parents have to those injuries, and the parallel episodes they refer to. One of the first
appalling instances of Jeanette s various accidents occurs when she is cooking hot dogs at the age of
three. Walls writes: ...when I stood up and started stirring the hot dogs again, I felt a blaze of heat on
my right side and realized my dress was on fire (9). As a result, Jeannette ended up having to be
covered in ice and given skin grafts due to the severity of her burns, despite this accident being
entirely preventable. While tragic, this occurred for a few reasons, first because she was much too
young to be maneuvering a hot stove, and furthermore because she was not being supervised by any
parent. Nonetheless, any adult could likely have noticed the fire and put it out more quickly had they
been in the room, leading to less acute injuries.
When Jeannette s mother did come, it was evident that she cared about the safety and well being of
her child: Mom ran into the room (9). Seeing as she came running rather than strolling, it can be
inferred that her mother is attentive and worried about her daughter; however, once in the hospital, her
father has an averse reaction to her injuries and the fact that she s in the hospital when he says: You
shouldn t be in this antiseptic joint (13). Most parents would fret over their child and let the hospital
do whatever they saw fit to help their child, but her father Rex doesn t trust the hospital and
potentially jeopardizes his daughter s health by not adhering to the hospital s recommendations. A
parallel episode to this tragic fire incident is when the family is staying at a hotel and are woken up in
the middle of the night by a fire. The whole building burns down, similar to how Jeanette s favorite
pink dress was completely singed and had to be cut

Of Mice and Men the Relationship Between George and Lennie...
How does Steinbeck present the relationship between George and Lennie in this chapter? The author
John Steinbeck presents the relationship between the two characters, George and Lennie in different
ways as they are both different characters and have different personalities. He presents it like a parent
and child relationship, with George being the parent and Lennie the child. As soon as the reader is
introduced to George and Lennie Steinbeck tells us that, They had walked in single file down the path
. This immediately notifies the reader of the kind of relationship between George and Lennie, it does
this by stating single file . This reminds us of a game called follow the leader. It also tells us that the

I could also notice when I was reading through the first chapter that George has a sense of authority
over Lennie, you gonna get that wood . This is like a parent telling a child to do his chores. On some
occasions though George shows a bit of hatred towards Lennie, he thinks of what he could have if
Lennie wasn t around and contrasts that with George. There is also a sense of lack of trust in the
relationship between the two men. We see this through the predicament with the work cards. It tells us
that George again has to take care of Lennie, and that Lennie isn t trusted by George. Again this idea is
portrayed to the reader on page seventeen, we notice that George knows that he needs a plan b as
Lennie cannot be trusted so his plan b is to tell Lennie to hide in the brush until I come for you . This
helps us to understand the relationship even further. George also treats Lennie like a dog in one
occasion in the chapter, good boy . This is something a master would say to a dog to encourage them,
it also tells us the sort of role in the relationship George has again.
In conclusion, we see that Steinbeck uses various techniques to portray the relationship between
George and Lennie. But the main method is the idea of George being like a parent to

Equality In The New Civil Rights
The world is composed of many people, all with different histories, which create various perspectives
within a society and culture. People who conform to a general idea generate a society, and the change
of ideologies over time in one area is a culture. Thankfully, the diversity available in highly populated
locations allows for individuals to develop in ways that contrast from each other, enabling
controversial conversations to shape the atmosphere in which they inhabit. The variety of opinions can
create struggles for people who are considered inferior, especially in how they treat themselves in their

There are many impediments in which self expression is caged, and there is a great sense of
discomfort. The intensities of such feelings depend on the atmospheres of each location, which an

mean that society and the culture will embrace a different person. In stages, the world can become a
more accepting place, but this can only occur as environments merge and gain experience of the

stable. At the same time, this does not mean that assimilation is the ultimate answer; without

sites like MySpace and AIM that are held responsible to get the social media ball rolling in the early
2000 s. The early 2000 s were part of a new age when technology reigned king. Technology was
quickly spreading and people were starting to realize what the full scope of possibilities that were to
be done with it. With all these new possibilities, people decided to start their own online businesses.

renowned businesses. Two of the most popular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These religious groups can vary from Christianity to Buddhism and anything in between. If one of
these groups contacts someone on social media it would most likely only be them trying to spread
their religious teachings. However, not all of these religious groups are good for the world. Some of
the groups can be hate groups or extremists for a certain religion. The most common in today s world
is the Islamic extremist group called ISIS. Terrorist groups like ISIS watch certain American citizens
to try and recruit them for terrorist training camps overseas. They will single out vulnerable citizens
that are easily persuaded with tactics like Reverse Shoutouts, Ghanima Accounts, and Account

terrorist group like ISIS starts a twitter account and makes it known for terrorist activities. After ISIS
is done with the account, they will hand it off to an easily influenced child to try and persuade them to
leave America and join ISIS overseas. With ISIS and other terrorist groups trying to poison the

Comparing Odyssey And The Fellowship Of The Ring
Daniel Blumen
December 2014
E Period Literary Heroes Honors
Both The Odyssey and The Fellowship of the Ring are epics depicting the maturity of one of the heros
in the poem/book. The Odyssey was translated by Robert Fitzgerald and The Fellowship of the Ring
was written by J.R.R Tolkien in 1954. Telemakhos and Frodo must overcome the people that stand in
their way to reach their full potential. Frodo Baggins and Telemakhos both overcome impediments
and by their mentor figures, reach their maturity. The Fellowship of the Ring takes place in a fictional
world named Middle Earth. The title itself tells some aspects of the book. The Ring, a possession of
The Dark Lord Sauron, is used for evil deeds. Sauron placed much of his power in the Ring, and
controls people through it. This is all in an effort to enslave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Fellowship of the Ring has really been a great book to read. It entices the reader and immerses
them into the world of Middle Earth. While the book is action packed, it delivers a strong message of
Frodo s best qualities; his persistence, loyalty, and bravery. The Fellowship of the Ring is a book that I
would recommend to everybody I know. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the epic by J.R.R Tolkien and

Countess Aurelia crumpled up her paper and tossed it in a pile of other balls of paper that had piled up

She banged her head against her desk. She d watched Sir Carnell for weeks on end, yet she couldn t
write a simple poem about him. Every time she wrote one word, it wasn t good enough. It didn t sound
right, didn t describe him right.
But there was something about him that compelled her to keep trying, and poetry was what she was
best at.
Aurelia stood and grabbed her stylus and wax tablet from her bedside table. She left her chamber and

Carnell headed for the keep.
Aurelia followed him across the bridge. They went into the keep then into the hall. Sir Carnell went to
the dais where the King and Queen sat. Aurelia took a seat at the small table that was set up below.
Sir Carnell looked up at his king. Yes, your highness?
Respectful? Aurelia carved the word into her tablet, though it left a bad taste in her mouth.
You re coming with me, said Richard. He stood and descended the steps.
Special? Aurelia lifted her stylus to write, but stopped. Special was too general.
Queen Fayre waved at Aurelia. Hi, Aurelia! Did you write something?
Aurelia? said Richard. He leaned on the table. Didn t notice you come in.

Dystopian Film, Divergent, And Children Of Men
Children of Men tells the story of illegal immigrants trying to find a place of refuge or safety within
the United Kingdom. In another dystopian film, Divergent, the characters live in a world that is
divided into five factions which is supposed to prevent future war. In both films, the government has
an impact on the characters. In Children of men it has the characteristics of contemporary society
while in Divergent it has both characteristics of a communist and capitalist societies. But what they
both have in common is that in each film it shows images of war weather it would be mental or
physical. Survival and revolution are shown to have a role in each film differently. Both films relay
the idea of redemption and hope for the future while having a dystopia setting.
Alfonso Cuaron, the director of the film Children of Men, relays a contemporary society by having the
movie based in the future, and he shows changes of the world and international political institutions.
How the future is not all the fancy technology and the society is broken because everything revolves
around the elimination of immigrants. With that it is causing the government to turn into a police state
by trying to get rid of all the immigrants. He adds some paints in the movie that are represented as
famous artwork in the later days. Giving the viewers that because of the world changing some people

How Can Social Justice Become A Fad
Movements such as Black Lives Matter and the gay rights movement have gained rapid popularity in
modern society. This spike of interest in social justice in pop culture has created a fad in which
celebrities, public figures, and regular citizens feel an underlying pressure to support social justice
movements which alter rights for large demographics of people. And while the cultural trend of social
justice becoming a fad creates the illusion of a more progressive society, the truth of the matter is that
the popularity of such movements can be detrimental to the cause because it gives the false
appearance of universal acceptance when the stigma against oppressed groups is still prevalent in
society. Indubitably, fads will fade, which is especially threatening in the case of social justice, which
has a much greater consequence once the popularity surrounding it disappears. Removing the illusion
of progress and calling out the hypocrisy behind those who feign support for their own personal gain
and popularity can counter the insidious nature of the social justice fad.
Popularity can be powerful in the sense that movements can gain a lot of traction by drawing attention

Tort Law of Negligence Essay
Torts of negligence are breaches of duty that results to injury to another person to whom the duty
breached is owed. Like all other torts, the requirements for this are duty, breach of duty by the
defendant, causation and injury(Stuhmcke and Corporation.E 2001). However, this form of tort differs
from intentional tort as regards the manner the duty is breached. In torts of negligence, duties are
breached by negligence and not by intent. Negligence is conduct that falls below the standard of care
established by law for the protection of others against unreasonable risk of harm(Stuhmcke and
Corporation.E 2001). The standard measure of negligence is the universal reasonable person standard.

The Leader Of The Anabaptist Movement
For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. This quote
from 1 Corinthians 3:11 appeared in many of his works and points to the Christ centeredness of his
theology (Machiel). This verse reflected on what he believed and the entire movement that he led
during his time. He made huge contributions to the Anabaptist movement and later became their
leader. Menno Simons lived from 1496 1559, during his life of 63 years he was a man of many
different things like being a priest, leader of the Anabaptists, a husband and a father. Very little is
unknown about Simon s childhood except for that he grew up in a very poor peasant environment with
his mother and father. His parents were most likely to have been dairy farmers (Machiel). He married
and had three children after he left the Roman Catholic Church. When he was training to become a
priest he learned Latin and some Greek and he never read the bible before or during his training
because he didn t want it to influence his Catholic beliefs. It is not exactly known where Simons may
have received his training but it was probably in a nearby monastery (Machiel). When he was finished
with his training he was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1524 at Utrecht. For twelve years he
was a Roman Catholic priest and for the first seven years he severed as parish priest in his fathers
village of Pingjum and later for five years in Witmarsum where he was born. Later on in his life he

Morgan Spurlock decided to make this documentary to investigate the fast food companies, and the
effects of certain fast food chains products, particularly McDonalds, on the health of society. This
Documentary explores the United States growing epidemic of obesity and diabetes as well. Morgan
decides to eat nothing but McDonald s food for thirty days. He must eat one of everything on the
menu at least once, and when asked to super size his meal he must do so. Another stipulation of
Morgan s experiment is that he can only take 5,000 steps a day to replicate the exercise that most

that he was ruining his liver and that he had doubled his risk for coronary heart disease which was
proven with a weekly blood test. He was told that he might do permanent damage to his liver due to
having to metabolize all of the excess fat in his new diet. Not to my surprise, McDonalds did not want
to participate in this documentary whatsoever and did not ever give Morgan the interview that he
sought after, even after over 15 telephone calls.
In a sense that obesity is a growing epidemic I think that the documentary was fairly realistic, but who

were known as super heavy users, which means that they eat McDonald?s food 3 times a week or
more. I think Morgan conveyed his negative opinions about the fast food chains, particularly
McDonalds very well although there may have been some dramatization. The people who are most
affected by McDonalds marketing and pricing practices are definitely kids and/or lower budget

The Origin Of The Word Dna And The Science World Is Well...
Introduction The acronym DNA in the science world is well known. Many would even be able to say
what it stands for: Deoxyribonucleic Acid . What is not as well known is who discovered DNA and
what went on behind the scenes. Early life and Education Born in London on July 25, 1920 to a well
known Jewish family, Rosalind Franklin was noted for her cleverness and outspokenness. She was
sent to St Paul s Girls School which was known for its strict and demanding academics, which

What Does Culture Affect Hr Philosophy, Policies And...
1. Culture gives societies their distinctive flavor and provides a guide as to how people interact and
what they expect from one another. How does culture affect HR philosophy, policies and programs?
Culture consists of symbolic system of values, attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions about appropriate
behaviors that are shared in our society as a way of life. In other words, culture is a set of meanings
(senses) and values that inform a particular way of life. It is lifestyle that shape and form a particular
human group. For this reason it is important to recognize that culture affect human resource
philosophy, policies and programs in the structure of organizations.
Culture affects organizations because their individuals are influenced by cognitive and motivational
perspectives. From a cognitive perspective, individuals are able to learn from different sets of values
that permit them to organize and process information about human resources management practices.
And, from the motivational perspective, we can understand how individuals view themselves and their
relationship with others. Both perspectives, cognitive and motivational, permit to have knowledge
about the mechanism of cultural influences in the human resources philosophy, policies and programs
in the organizations.
In addition, according to David Thomas and Mila Lazarova, there are two mechanisms that influence
and might be identified in the organizational structure: First, the organizational structure

Genetic Expression In Gene Expression
In gene expression DNA, the blueprint of life is transcribed into RNA, a nucleic acid that acts as a
messenger carrying instructions that control the synthesis of proteins. Gene expression is vital to
determining cell functions and exactly how much protein should be produced by the cell. The process
in which the end proteins are modified can also be manipulated by researchers. The types of cells
which are typically handled in laboratories include prokaryotes. Escherichia coli is a bacteria found in

During this study, plasmids with ampicillin resistance (pAMP) known as pUC18, were manipulated
due to their stability in extreme environments. The pUC18 plasmid pAMP gene codes for the
production of beta lactamase, an enzyme utilized in the breakdown of ampicillin. Once E. coli obtains
this gene, it is able to survive in an environment that is ampicillin rich. Lux plasmids were the second
type used to provide bioluminescence in the cultures of E. coli grown. The lux plasmid contains
genetic material which codes for luciferase, an enzyme which catalyzes bioluminescence, a light
emitting reaction. This is considered the marker where transformation efficiency can be analyzed
through the light emissions.
Several techniques were implemented in this study to improve E. coli bacterias competency, the
ability for a cell to uptake genetic material. These procedures were necessary considering the bacteria
does not allow for transformation so efficiently in natural circumstances. Since it lacks the ability to
do so, the uptake of material would be limited despite the preventative measures taken. To neutralize
the negatively charged DNA in E. coli, the use of CaCl2 (sodium chloride), a positively charged
solution, dissociates the calcium from chloride, which enters the cells and alters the charge. This
process is known as electroporation. This causes the bacteria cells to swell and the calcium molecules
help adjust the cell membrane to become

Power Of Education In The Great Gatsby
October 5, 2014
For centuries, the world has favored those who are in possession of a higher intelligence. Historically,
ruling classes were composed of educated nobles or trained workers, the few who had been able to
receive an education. Education in developed countries is often included in the basic rights to which
every human should have access. Its importance has been the focal point of countless movements, all
petitioning for the opportunity of schooling for lower class citizens. The United States of America,
though it has experienced significant changes in regards to the literacy of all citizens, did not do so
without difficulty. The two most notable groups to fight for the right to equal education had to struggle
for years to obtain their goals. African Americans had little to no rights until the Emancipation
Proclamation in 1865, and even then, only males were allowed to read and write. Women did not
begin attending college in equal numbers to men until as recently as 1980. The strong correlation
between power and education makes possessing a sound education a valuable asset and highly sought
after. Education s role in society is a prevalent theme throughout Scott F. Fitzgerald s The Great
Gatsby. Tom s supremacy through education and wealth contrasts heavily with Gatsby s lack of
knowledge, creating tension within the novel between the two opposing men.

Examples Of Reversal Of Motive
2.2 Reversal of Motive
According to Worley the second type of twist is the reversal of motive (2014). The following part will
introduce what is meant with a motive twist by means of two movies.
The first example is Gone Baby Gone, in which a child with a drug addict mother goes missing (cf.
Heerum 2010: 37). Two private detectives provide assistance with the on going police investigation in
order to bring the truth to light. As the plot unfolds, it turns out that the kidnapping was only faked and
that the little girl is very well. The police captain is raising the child with his wife giving her a happy
alternative than living with her mother (cf. Heerum 2010: 38). This thriller has a very concealed twist;
the kidnapping case fabricated by the police captain definitely exceeds the viewers expectation as his
real motive comes true.
A further movie with a very complex plot is Lucky Number Slevin. The main character, Slevin is
mistaken for somebody else, who owes debts to two mafia bosses. Lurking on the fringes of the story
an international assassin is hired by both bosses to kill Slevin after he delivers the money. In the end it

tech companies did not participate in the protest. A senior vice president at Public Knowledge, Harold

The definition of Net Neutrality is the principle that internet service providers should enable access to

internet is an important source of information. If net neutrality were to be repealed, we would have
limited access to information. This article is important enough to share in the news because the news

Gender Transition Is An Intelligible And Recognizable Rite...
Gender transition makes for a provocative quilting point as it shapes Western social conventions
regarding binary gender identities into an intelligible and recognizable rite of passage. Originally
theorized by anthropologist Arnold Van Gennep (date), rites of passage configure social status changes
into a visible tripartite process denoted by a starting point of separation, followed by a transitional (or
liminal) stage, and concluding with a reinstallation back into society under the new station (CITE).
While the process is undertaken by, and therefore has been ostensibly created for, the individual
initiate, rites of passage are constituted and maintained by the State, which institutionally signifies
passage from one phase of the process to another. Each gradation in the case of gender transition, the
individual s divorce from their prior status as a recognizable man or woman , the mediated liminal
state that includes hormone replacement therapy, real life test, ongoing therapeutic consultation,
surgical remedies, and the re aggregation (Turner 363) noted through post operative letters and/or
changed government documents is orchestrated, measured and controlled. The expected and rewarded
end result is for the transgender individual to be recognized as analogous as cisgender. In a binary
gendered society, such passing defines a successful gendered rite of passage; conversely, to be trans is

The Effects Of Osteoporosis On The Development Of The Disease
Osteoporosis is typically a silent disease characterized by low bone mass and decreased bone density
ending by fractures that occur following no or at least minimal trauma. Osteoporosis has multiple
pathophysiologic mechanisms that interact in the development of the disease (1, 2). The disease
simply results from the imbalance between bone resorption and bone formation. Increased bone
resorption or decreased bone formation may lead to osteoporosis. Bone is made of collagen and
mineral components. The former gives bone its flexibility and energy absorbing capability, while the
later gives bone its stiffness and strength. Imbalances can impair bone quality and result in reduced
bone strength and subsequently fractures.
Bone mass increases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So the bone mass in older adults equals the peak bone mass achieved by age 18 25 minus the amount
of bone subsequently lost.
The process of bone remodeling may be considered a preventive maintenance mechanism that
maintains a healthy skeleton because of continually removing older bone and replacing it with new
bone. When this balance is altered, resulting in greater bone removal than replacement, bone loss
occurs (5).
Menopause and advancing age play the main role in this imbalance. With the onset of menopause, the
rate of bone remodeling increases.
Oestrogen deficiency
Accelerated bone loss can be affected by hormonal status as occurs in perimenopausal women.
Gonadal deficiency can impact elderly men and women and can be secondary to various disease states
and medications. Bone loss in women accelerates rapidly in the first years after menopause.
Osteoblasts, osteocytes, and osteoclasts all express estrogen receptors.
Estrogen deficiency can affect bone density by(5):
1 Up regulates osteoclast progenitor cells.
2 Cause increased recruitment of higher numbers of preosteoclasts.
3 Increased activity and lifespan of mature osteoclasts.
4 Estrogen affects bones indirectly through cytokines and local growth factors
Aging
Aging interacts mainly with bone deposition than bone resorption. The supply of osteoblasts, which
deposit bone, as compared to demand is progressively declining with aging. After the third decade of
life, bone

Descriptive Essay About My Car
Loud talking, cars honking, and people looking for their family and friends. That is all you hear when
you re at the airport in San Salvador. I was with my mom that day, we were looking for our ride out of
the airport. Our ride was our cousin Imelda with her dad Josue. Josue was a tall, dark man with curly
black hair and a short beard to go with it, he was also wearing his work clothes which were very dirty
because he worked on a farm. Imelda is a short dark girl with long curly black hair. She was wearing a
red dress with white flowers. Most of my family has dark skin with dark curly hair, according to them
I was gifted with light skin. Our uncle took us and gave us a ride on an old bus, it looked like it was

When we got there we were walking around and seeing the attractions like the old Spanish colonial
buildings in the old part of the city. After some time we got hungry and ate at a small restaurant. The
inside was so colorful and it was filled with pictures of festivals such as El Dia de la Raza, La
Resurrección, Dia de San Mateo, and so much more. After we ate there we were planning on going to
the west side of the city, but the police would not let anyone in. Instead we went to a different town
north of Santa Ana, Texistepeque, this town was a former Mayan or Pipil city. The Pipil were one of
the former native people who lived in El Salvador. It was early afternoon when we got there. This time
we couldn t take the bus because the road we took was too narrow, so we took a small rickshaw. The
ride there was great, I loved looking out and seeing the countryside with all the animals wandering
around. In the town we went to a few stores and bought some things, they got me a woven Mayan
bracelet with my name on it. I still have it after almost 6 years. Mom bought herself a Pipil dress, a
Mayan dress, a blanket, and a purse. All of these things were very cheap compared to things in the
U.S. It was getting dark out, so we stayed with a family friend named Tómas. Tómas looked like he

Douglas Ivester Case Study Essay
Case Study
Coca Cola and CEO Douglas Ivester
And
BP and CEO Tony Hayward
1. If Douglas Ivester was so successful, for years, on the executive staff, why did he fail when he was
given the CEO/president position? Give an overall impression, broad stroke explanation of why he
failed. Ivester was a hardworking, diligent CEO, but he lost sight of the people side of Coca Cola. In
any business people are a very important aspect that needs to be nurtured because without them the
business is nothing but a name. Ivester s predecessor, Robert Goizueta, had a management mantra this
is a people relations business (Knoop, 11). Ivester seemed to forget that mantra and took over the
company selfishly.
2. List the key situational ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From an emotional intelligence perspective I think Douglas Ivester had more failing then successes.
Ivester had a high I.Q. but lacked emotional intelligence (E.I.). He failed by not have very good social
skills. This was shown by how he dealt with the bottlers of Coca Cola. He wanted power over them
instead of building relationships. Also, he failed by not having empathy for others. His lack of
empathy was shown by the contamination scare in Belgium. At the time of the scare many people
were dealing with the past scare of Mad Cow Disease in 1994. The Coke contamination made
everyone s emotions heighten. Ivester should have responded more quickly to the situation and with
more empathy for the people who were experiencing it first hand. His one success was motivation.
Ivester was highly motivated and he seemed to push through all of his setbacks although it seemed he
didn t learn any lessons from his mistakes.
7. What type of leadership approach did Ivester take when he was part of Coke s executive staff?
During the year of being part of Coke s executive staff Ivester was more of manager instead of a
leader. Ivester was able to work up the corporate ladder at Coca Cola. He became a finance wizard and
for twenty years he was proving himself to the company. He was very competitive at what he did and
he was a genius at managing operations.
8. What type of leadership approach did he take once he became CEO? Ivester s

Edward Snowden Research Paper
The German Intelligence Apparatus The German intelligence agencies roots go back to the days of the
Abwehr when Germany had the most sophisticated intelligence and counter intelligence agency in the
world prior to the start of WWI. Today German intelligence agencies are split into four different
agencies with some overlapping responsibilities and missions. The largest of these is the Federal
Intelligence Service (Bundesnachrichtendienst). The BDN acts as an early warning to alert German
officials of potential threats from abroad. Since it is Germany s only overseas intelligence agency it
collects on military and civilian interest. It often shares information and works closely with the KSA,
Strategic Reconnaissance Command, on those missions. Its primary missions are to collect and
analyze data on terrorists, WMD s, drug and weapon trafficking, illegal migration and information
warfare. The BDN has a $615 million Euro budget and has 6500 employees. The agency is one of the
best and most effective intelligence agencies in the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Given the history of prior German spy agencies like the Nazi SS and the Stasi of the Cold War era, it
is easy to understand the trust issues Germans have with spies. Recently the BDN found themselves in

NSA collection in Germany, attention was drawn to the BDN s own telecommunication collection
activities in Bavaria. The revelation that the NSA was using the BDN to listen in on not only German
s phone conversations but also French and Middle Eastern calls sent the German people into a panic

The Great White Sharks Of South Africa
Getting to Know the Great White Sharks in South Africa
When I was a child, I would always watch Steve Irwin on television. Steve Irwin inspired me to want
to work in a biological field the way he did. A few years later, I saw Shark Week on the Discovery
Channel for the first time and from that point on, I knew that I wanted to research sharks. From there,
I became familiar with all the work that OCEARCH has done regarding great whites that are in South
African waters and the great whites that frequent Cape Cod waters in the summer ( About OCEARCH
). As I work towards my degree in Marine Biology, I would love the opportunity to have hands on
experience. Researching sharks is something that I find to be very important, which I know
OCEARCH does as well. I would like to apply for your OCEARCH Great White Shark grant to travel
to the coast of South Africa so that I may research the great white sharks in the surrounding waters. I
believe that I would qualify for OCEARCH s grant because I understand the importance of studying
great white sharks, I have done my research on the travel that I need to go to South Africa, and lastly
the science community would benefit from my work. There is a need for shark research to be done
worldwide ( Science ). Even though South Africa is a popular spot for ecotourism, tourism to areas of
ecological interest (typically exotic and often threatened natural environments), especially to support
conservation efforts and observe wildlife, there is

Good vs. Evil in John Cheever s The Five-Forty-Eight Essay
Good vs. Evil in John Cheever s The Five Forty Eight
John Cheever was an award winning American author of the twentieth century. His work often
possessed psychological and religious vision with central themes of sin, deception, and redemption
(Kennedy, 551). Cheever s short story entitled The Five Forty Eight portrays a struggle of good vs.
evil. Following the themes of sin, deception, and redemption, we read of a young woman (good)
seeking revenge for the evil done to her. Through the course of the story the reader can distinguish
between the traits of good and evil.
The Webster s dictionary defines evil as that which is morally wrong. Blake has some distinct morality
issues. Blake, the evil force in the story, possesses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His relationships are not the only area of his life that we see Blake?s evil nature rise. There are subtle
hints of his self obsession throughout Cheever?s story. Early on in the story, Blake is admiring himself
in a plate glass window and sees himself with ?a clear reflection? and the crowds ?like shadows at his
back? (551). He then sees Mrs. Dent as a ?contorted being? (551) in the same window. Blake sees
himself as a flawless creature of complete perfection with the mass of city pedestrians as a blur behind
his faultlessness, and he can easily pick out the imperfections in other individuals. He sees himself as
the ultimate perfection, instead of seeing the negative impact he has on his friends and family. His
negative interactions with friends and family are the evil force that breaks his relationships. There is
no mention of any moral actions performed by him.
We find yet another example of Blake?s immoral actions through his self conceit. He fails to comfort a
crying Mrs. Dent, ?he felt too contented and warm and sleepy to worry about her tears? (553). Blake
has no compassion for others; he only worries about his own affairs. This is indicative that Blake is
morally wrong.
Blake so genuinely sees himself as perfect that it is virtually impossible for him to accept any minor
mistakes he makes. When he first comes across Mrs. Dent after their affair, he is surprised to find that
he cannot

Artevivo Gallery Analysis
Art galleries and museums are visual spaces used exclusively for an exhibition and education of art.
Galleries and museums are an essential part of our society as it promotes cultural diversity and
differences. The galleries and museums display art to present the viewer an insight into a variety of
cultures, backgrounds, and communities. On the third Friday of every month, an event in Downtown
Brownsville called Noche de Arte takes place. Noche de Arte consists of 13 local buildings and
galleries that showcase artwork to support art and artists within the community. Out of the 13
galleries, two artworks from Artevivo Gallery struck out to me the most. Artevivo Gallery, which is

Although La Rosa is a digital photograph, the viewer can still see that it is a mixed media piece. While
examining this exquisite piece in person, it is abstractly profound by a technique of how everything is
placed together by a collage type of form. The way the emphasis is on the flower is quite beautiful that
brings this photograph together. The variation of colors, writing, and cut outs shows movement in the
piece, yet flows around the flower. The second piece that stood out the most to me was also another
photograph by Mari Ortiz called Loving the Architecture. Architecture, especially in the downtown
area, is antique yet interesting to look at. This picture s medium required various techniques such as
color correction, sizing, cropping, viewing, and printing in a dark room. The color of this picture
defines the boldness and texture of the building in a naturalistic way. Although printing digitally in a
dark room prints the photograph in black and white, the way the shadows captures depth and tones is

The Use Of The Sit-In Movement In The Civil Rights Movement
The sit in movement acted as a major protest and turning point for the Civil Rights Movement. The sit
ins highlighted the main moral issue that was being fought: racial discrimination and segregation.
Blacks utilized the strategies of nonviolence and student involvement in order to combat the moral
issue of racial segregation ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). The appeal for human rights through the use
of nonviolence was an important strategy utilized by blacks during the Civil Rights movement and in
particular the sit in movement. The students who initiated the sit ins were heavily trained on non
violence tactics ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). These tactics were often taught through workshops on
nonviolence that taught them how to take the blows and respond with a sense of dignity (Vivian, Ain t
Scared of Your Jails ). Such training was useful, as whites often responded with violence. While
protesters were sitting at the counter, they found themselves attacked by whites, while the police did
nothing to protect them ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). Likewise, the residence of Z. Alexander Looby
was bombed ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). However, the violence perpetrated by whites was only used
against them as blacks intended to whip the enemy with something that he doesn t understand : that
something being peaceful resistance (McCain, 116). This peaceful resistance was crucial for the
success of the movement, as nonviolence nurture[d] the atmosphere in which

The Spanish Reconquista
Spain has always been a melting pot of ethnicity and culture. From the Celts and Visigoths that came
from the north to the Africans and Arabs from the south to the Romans from the East, empires,
kingdoms, and tribes all over the world have recognized and tried to take advantage of the benefits of
Spain. War, conquest, and reconquest are frequent throughout the entire history of Spain, and the
history of Moors in Spain is no exception. It began in the year 711 when the Moors first crossed over
to the Iberian Peninsula, until their expulsion from Granada in 1492 which marks the end of the
Reconquista, they influenced the native Iberians in many ways including culture and religion. The
Moors were people of Berber, Black African, and Arab ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christians and Jews were heavily taxed for the right to practice their own religions. Those who
converted to Islam, however, paid lesser taxes and had more privileges. Around 718, Pelagius, a
Visigoth nobleman, established an independent Christian state in opposition to the Moorish dominance
in Spain. Due to his opposition of Muslim control, Pelagius and a group of 30 some men were exiled
and lived in a cave, refusing to pay taxes and harassing the Moors. Between 718 and 722, Pelagius and
his small band of warriors fought and triumphed against the Moors at the Battle of Covodonga. This is
considered the beginning of the Spanish Reconquista. The Reconquista was a period of around 774
years where the Christian kings reclaimed the Iberian Peninsula from the Islamic Moors. The
Reconquista was not carried out by the Spanish alone, however. King Charlemagne of France
reclaimed the western Pyrenees and formed the Marca Hispanica to defend the border between the
Frankish Kingdom and the Muslims. Christians from all over Europe traveled to the Iberian Peninsula
to participate in the reclaiming of Spain in the name of God. The Reconquista was not all war and
conquest, but also the re population of Christians on the peninsula. As the Berbers abandoned towns
and fortresses, the Christian kings took their people and re inhabited those areas. In some places,
Christian peasants, monks, and nobles were granted lands by their king or lord to

  • 2. The Giver Arguments Giver Argument Essay The book Giver by Lois Lowry is about a 13 year boy named Jonas. Jonas was selected for a special job because he can see beyond such as the color red. The special job is getting memories of the past such as snow and love from his mentor the Giver. Jonas also receives memories about death. He sees a release, which is where a worker of the community injects a liquid killing the person. His dad killed one of the newborn twins because no one in the community can look the same. Everyone in the community was told that release was kicking someone out of the community and shipping them to elsewhere. Jonas sees his dad throw the baby in a trash chute. Jonas knew that he wouldn t get pain because another memory that the Giver gave him was on a hill with a sled, but the snow was hard, causing him to fall of the sled and get a lot of pain. The hill Jonas is on right now is soft, so they won t get hurt. Jonas even said We re almost there, Gabriel, he whispered, feeling quite certain without quite knowing why. I remember this place, Gabe. And it was true. But it was not a grasping of a thin and burdensome recollection; this was different. This was something different. This was something that he could keep. It was a memory of his own(p. 223 224) Even the Christmas lights were from his memories. When the Giver gave Jonas a memory of love, it was a family celebrating Christmas with lights and songs. Riding to elsewhere on the sled, Jonas sees Christmas light and hears Christmas songs like the memories, making him happy. Jonas noticed as they went downward. downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from the trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love (p. 225). Dove introduced various beauty products through category extensions. 4.3 Brand meaning makes people to anticipate a particular capability of a brand/product. Prior to the year 2000 Dove differentiated (pg.no. 269 Kotler, Lane, 2008) itself from other soaps with its excellent moisturizing and cleansing capabilities. In the year 2000 Dove took advantage of brand equity (pg.no. 242 Kotler, Lane, 2008 ) to launch other beauty products. Dove tried to extend the brand meaning beyond the functional capabilities through Campaign for Real Beauty . This definitely poses challenges to marketers. Now marketers should not only concentrate on the functional benefits of the brand they should also concentrate on emotional benefits (pg.no. 241 Kotler, Lane, 2008 ) of the brand. 4.4 Dove used Buzz and Viral marketing techniques (pg.no. 546 Kotler, Lane, 2008 ) to send the message of their product to the audience. Reaction Rates of Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric Acid at Various Concentrations Introduction/ plan I am experimenting into the reaction rates of Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric acid when under different concentrations. Both Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric acid are clear solutions but when they react together they produce a cloudy solution, the solution become so cloudy you cannot see through it. To measure the rate of reaction I am going to print off a cross from the computer onto a piece of paper, place it under the beaker with the solution in it and record the time taken for the cross not to be visible. The Symbol equation for my experiment is: Na S O (aq) + 2HCl (aq) 2NaCl (aq) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By doing this it is changing the concentration. I am not going to carry out an experiment using 0ml Sodium Thiosulphate, 10mls Hydrochloric acid and 30mls water, as there would be no Sodium Thiosulphate for the hydrochloric acid to react with. I will do each experiment 3 times and then work out averages for each one, as this will give me a more accurate set of results. Altogether including averages I will have 40 separate results. From repeating each experiment 3times I will be able to discover any drastic anomalies if there are any. Preliminary Work Sodium Thiosulphate (mls) 30 Hydrochloric Acid (mls) 10 Water (mls) 0 Time Taken for Cross to Disappear (mins) 01.10 Prediction I predict that as the volume of Sodium Thiosulphate decreases the reaction time will increase, as there will be a lower concentration of Sodium Thiosulphate for the Hydrochloric

Rom Chocolate Brand During the communism years, mostly during Nicolae Ceauşescu s reign , when basic products (food) were rationed and the other products were exported for economical growth, Kandia SA created the ROM chocolate bar. More exactly, ROM is a chocolate bar filled with rum cream, a unique product created for the local, Romanian market, first created in 1964. The brand, from the begining, was succesful, because of the lack of choices and, of course, the restrictions which were applied by the communist government. Nowadays, due to the new ROM campaign, the level of involvement is changing , increasing amongst the young market segment. That s happening because customers are actively participating in this campaign, which promotes the positive aspects of Romanians around the world. Therefore, the involvement is being modified by changing the reason for which some people buy the chocolate bar, actually by making them relate to ROM. Overall, the new ROM campaign now focuses on „inviting consumers to buy the product and stand up for what they are and believe in, campaign which seems to be successful, since, according to www.romaniisuntdestepti.ro, 637.937 Romanians were involved in it so far. So, the ROM brand represents Romanian quality, history and a gate towards social groups (nationalists). That is the brand equity created from the begining, which creates awareness. • 10. Sir Winston Churchill s We Will Fight At The Beaches Pedro Arcaya Persuasion and Propaganda Prof. Varga September 9th, 2015 Sir Winston Churchill s We Will Fight at the Beaches Sir Winston Churchill is my favorite speaker of all times. He was a very prepared, confident and studied journalist, historian, artist, writer, (he won a Nobel Prize in Literature), an Officer of the UK army, a statesman and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Even though I did not live through World War II nor am I British, listening to his speeches on YouTube really gives me the chills. I can easily realize why he was one of the most influential leaders during the War while being the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. His power to unite and motivate his people was amazing; many have ever since followed his speaking techniques. He literally led his country from the brink of defeat to victory with innate leadership abilities. He was a great strategist as well, the alliance he began with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and General Secretary Joseph Stalin was key for the imminent defeat of the Axis countries. I firmly believe that for this reasons Sir Winston Churchill was one of the most if not the most important key characters in the World War II. I chose this speech because, it effectively brought England together and indirectly invited the U.S into and alliance who was later key for the victory, it provided a warning on an imminent German invasion and a big load of encouragement to believe in a future victory. I will be analyzing the speech ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Social Institutions In My Family How does one grow? How does the outside world affect the personality development of someone? These can be seen through the social institutions one is involved with. A social institution can be defined as, a group or social context within which processes of socialization takes place, (Giddens, Duneier, Appelbaum, and Carr, 2016). Throughout our life time, we move through different social institutions. All these social institutions influence our personality and how we view the world around us. Therefore, the social institutions that have shaped my personality are family, education, and work. My family could be the most dysfunctional family in the whole United States. But without them, I would not be the compassionate and emotional person I have become today. The first part to this is the fact that I have a huge extended family. An extended family can be defined as, a family consisting of two or more generations living either within the same household or very close to each other, (Hodge 2016). In my house at one point it contained, my great grandparents, my grandparents, my parents and me and my two siblings. And then two towns over, my aunt and 3 cousins. You could say we were raised by a village. Today, the only ones missing from my house is my great grandparents and my grandfather. The main reason why my family is structured like this because of my ethnicity. Being Hispanic, family values are instilled with in us from a young age. An example of this is the fact that I ... Compacting and cementing is when the rocks get pushed together to form a rock. Gravity moves the sediment like in rockslides, mudslides, or waterfalls. • 18. A Summary Of The Injury In The Glass Castle In Jeannette Walls s memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette and her siblings are constantly plagued with various accidents and injuries, more so than typical children would be. Her parents have a carefree and lenient approach to parenting, oftentimes leaving the children to fend for themselves or in perilous situations. In The Glass Castle, Jeannette recounts some of the injuries she and her siblings suffer, the reaction her parents have to those injuries, and the parallel episodes they refer to. One of the first appalling instances of Jeanette s various accidents occurs when she is cooking hot dogs at the age of three. Walls writes: ...when I stood up and started stirring the hot dogs again, I felt a blaze of heat on my right side and realized my dress was on fire (9). As a result, Jeannette ended up having to be covered in ice and given skin grafts due to the severity of her burns, despite this accident being entirely preventable. While tragic, this occurred for a few reasons, first because she was much too young to be maneuvering a hot stove, and furthermore because she was not being supervised by any parent. Nonetheless, any adult could likely have noticed the fire and put it out more quickly had they been in the room, leading to less acute injuries. When Jeannette s mother did come, it was evident that she cared about the safety and well being of her child: Mom ran into the room (9). Seeing as she came running rather than strolling, it can be inferred that her mother is attentive and worried about her daughter; however, once in the hospital, her father has an averse reaction to her injuries and the fact that she s in the hospital when he says: You shouldn t be in this antiseptic joint (13). Most parents would fret over their child and let the hospital do whatever they saw fit to help their child, but her father Rex doesn t trust the hospital and potentially jeopardizes his daughter s health by not adhering to the hospital s recommendations. A parallel episode to this tragic fire incident is when the family is staying at a hotel and are woken up in the middle of the night by a fire. The whole building burns down, similar to how Jeanette s favorite pink dress was completely singed and had to be cut ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The author John Steinbeck presents the relationship between the two characters, George and Lennie in different ways as they are both different characters and have different personalities. He presents it like a parent and child relationship, with George being the parent and Lennie the child. As soon as the reader is introduced to George and Lennie Steinbeck tells us that, They had walked in single file down the path . I could also notice when I was reading through the first chapter that George has a sense of authority over Lennie, you gonna get that wood . This is like a parent telling a child to do his chores. On some occasions though George shows a bit of hatred towards Lennie, he thinks of what he could have if Lennie wasn t around and contrasts that with George. There is also a sense of lack of trust in the relationship between the two men. We see this through the predicament with the work cards. It tells us that George again has to take care of Lennie, and that Lennie isn t trusted by George. Again this idea is portrayed to the reader on page seventeen, we notice that George knows that he needs a plan b as Lennie cannot be trusted so his plan b is to tell Lennie to hide in the brush until I come for you . This helps us to understand the relationship even further. George also treats Lennie like a dog in one occasion in the chapter, good boy . This is something a master would say to a dog to encourage them, it also tells us the sort of role in the relationship George has again. In conclusion, we see that Steinbeck uses various techniques to portray the relationship between George and Lennie. But the main method is the idea of George being like a parent to ... This spike of interest in social justice in pop culture has created a fad in which celebrities, public figures, and regular citizens feel an underlying pressure to support social justice movements which alter rights for large demographics of people. And while the cultural trend of social justice becoming a fad creates the illusion of a more progressive society, the truth of the matter is that the popularity of such movements can be detrimental to the cause because it gives the false appearance of universal acceptance when the stigma against oppressed groups is still prevalent in society. Indubitably, fads will fade, which is especially threatening in the case of social justice, which has a much greater consequence once the popularity surrounding it disappears. Removing the illusion of progress and calling out the hypocrisy behind those who feign support for their own personal gain and popularity can counter the insidious nature of the social justice fad. Culture gives societies their distinctive flavor and provides a guide as to how people interact and what they expect from one another. How does culture affect HR philosophy, policies and programs? Culture consists of symbolic system of values, attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions about appropriate behaviors that are shared in our society as a way of life. In other words, culture is a set of meanings (senses) and values that inform a particular way of life. It is lifestyle that shape and form a particular human group. For this reason it is important to recognize that culture affect human resource philosophy, policies and programs in the structure of organizations. Culture affects organizations because their individuals are influenced by cognitive and motivational perspectives. From a cognitive perspective, individuals are able to learn from different sets of values that permit them to organize and process information about human resources management practices. And, from the motivational perspective, we can understand how individuals view themselves and their relationship with others. Both perspectives, cognitive and motivational, permit to have knowledge about the mechanism of cultural influences in the human resources philosophy, policies and programs in the organizations. Once E. coli obtains this gene, it is able to survive in an environment that is ampicillin rich. Lux plasmids were the second type used to provide bioluminescence in the cultures of E. coli grown. The lux plasmid contains genetic material which codes for luciferase, an enzyme which catalyzes bioluminescence, a light emitting reaction. This is considered the marker where transformation efficiency can be analyzed through the light emissions. Several techniques were implemented in this study to improve E. coli bacterias competency, the ability for a cell to uptake genetic material. These procedures were necessary considering the bacteria does not allow for transformation so efficiently in natural circumstances. Since it lacks the ability to do so, the uptake of material would be limited despite the preventative measures taken. Historically, ruling classes were composed of educated nobles or trained workers, the few who had been able to receive an education. Education in developed countries is often included in the basic rights to which every human should have access. Its importance has been the focal point of countless movements, all petitioning for the opportunity of schooling for lower class citizens. The United States of America, though it has experienced significant changes in regards to the literacy of all citizens, did not do so without difficulty. Net Neutrality Essay As protests continue to protect net neutrality, more online companies join in by displaying warnings on their websites, stating how the FCC, or the Federal Communications Commission, will change the rules for net neutrality which would affect the way people will use the internet. Sites such as Reddit, Esty, and Kickstarter included these warning in the form of pop up boxes and Kickstarter cleared its home page to communicate to users with the message Defend Net Neutrality. On Tuesday, the large tech companies did not participate in the protest. A senior vice president at Public Knowledge, Harold Feld, said: the biggest tech companies were less vocal because they were facing more regulatory battles than in past years. Moreover, big tech companies encountered complaints from some lawmakers stating that they became too influential. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The definition of Net Neutrality is the principle that internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or restricting access to certain products or websites. If this principle were to be repealed, the government will decide what is put on the internet and you would have to pay to access some websites or apps, or internet providers might just block access to particular apps. I agree with the fight to defend net neutrality because the internet is an important source of information. If net neutrality were to be repealed, we would have limited access to information. This article is important enough to share in the news because the news websites could be blocked because of the things that they report on. For example, someone with a higher authority may want a news network blocked by the news they report. • 39. Characteristics Of A Modern Day Hero A doctor, a father, and, most importantly, a hero. Someone I would consider a modern day hero is Derek Shephard, from the TV show Grey´s Anatomy . A hero is someone who is able to help others without any interest that would benefit him/her behind his actions Derek is a perfect example of a modern day hero. He is selfless and works as a doctor with the main goal of helping others. Right before a surgery he says to everyone in the OR: Today is a beautiful day to save lives. Derek is worthy of the title of a modern day hero because of all his good and selfless actions towards the others. What is a modern day hero exactly? As I said before, he is a person you can bump into easily in your life. He takes care of his family and takes care of other people too in his job as a doctor. Chief of neurosurgery at Seattle Grace Hospital/ Grey + Sloan Memorial Hospital, Derek has to be brave and smart to look after every patient he has. Braveness and intelligence are characteristics he has that match the ones classical and epic heroes have. Even though his challenges are not fighting monsters, he has some pretty hard challenges like saving a woman from a big aneurism in her brain, and the only powers he has are his skills with a scalpel in hand. Derek does not fit perfectly the Hero s Journey idea, but he does match it in some aspects. For example, during his last episode, Derek faces one of his major trials when he saves over three people on the side of an empty highway after these three people suffered a car accident. However, right after that, crisis comes and he is hit by the ambulance he called to take the people he saved, from the highway to a hospital. Derek faces death as a consequence, however he does not come back to life, because he is not a classical hero with superhuman characteristics, but a simple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Gender Transition Is An Intelligible And Recognizable Rite... Gender transition makes for a provocative quilting point as it shapes Western social conventions regarding binary gender identities into an intelligible and recognizable rite of passage. Originally theorized by anthropologist Arnold Van Gennep (date), rites of passage configure social status changes into a visible tripartite process denoted by a starting point of separation, followed by a transitional (or liminal) stage, and concluding with a reinstallation back into society under the new station (CITE). While the process is undertaken by, and therefore has been ostensibly created for, the individual initiate, rites of passage are constituted and maintained by the State, which institutionally signifies passage from one phase of the process to another. Each gradation in the case of gender transition, the individual s divorce from their prior status as a recognizable man or woman , the mediated liminal state that includes hormone replacement therapy, real life test, ongoing therapeutic consultation, surgical remedies, and the re aggregation (Turner 363) noted through post operative letters and/or changed government documents is orchestrated, measured and controlled. The expected and rewarded end result is for the transgender individual to be recognized as analogous as cisgender. In a binary gendered society, such passing defines a successful gendered rite of passage; conversely, to be trans is to located betwixt and between (Turner 1969) the dominant gender ... By creating a vast network of interconnected repositories, EHR will provide a easy access to health information about individual patients to care, providers. To create a province wide clinical information system, the first challenge is to connect individual Electronic Medical Records (EMR) that may be concise to a particular healthcare facility. Currently, more than 1200 standalone EMR systems exist within Alberta Health Services (AHS), with very few of them interconnected and most of them outdated. • 42. The Effects Of Osteoporosis On The Development Of The Disease Osteoporosis is typically a silent disease characterized by low bone mass and decreased bone density ending by fractures that occur following no or at least minimal trauma. Osteoporosis has multiple pathophysiologic mechanisms that interact in the development of the disease (1, 2). The disease simply results from the imbalance between bone resorption and bone formation. Increased bone resorption or decreased bone formation may lead to osteoporosis. Bone is made of collagen and mineral components. The former gives bone its flexibility and energy absorbing capability, while the later gives bone its stiffness and strength. Imbalances can impair bone quality and result in reduced bone strength and subsequently fractures. Bone mass increases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So the bone mass in older adults equals the peak bone mass achieved by age 18 25 minus the amount of bone subsequently lost. The process of bone remodeling may be considered a preventive maintenance mechanism that maintains a healthy skeleton because of continually removing older bone and replacing it with new bone. When this balance is altered, resulting in greater bone removal than replacement, bone loss occurs (5). Menopause and advancing age play the main role in this imbalance. With the onset of menopause, the rate of bone remodeling increases. Oestrogen deficiency Accelerated bone loss can be affected by hormonal status as occurs in perimenopausal women. Gonadal deficiency can impact elderly men and women and can be secondary to various disease states and medications. Bone loss in women accelerates rapidly in the first years after menopause. Osteoblasts, osteocytes, and osteoclasts all express estrogen receptors. Estrogen deficiency can affect bone density by(5): 1 Up regulates osteoclast progenitor cells. 2 Cause increased recruitment of higher numbers of preosteoclasts. 3 Increased activity and lifespan of mature osteoclasts. 4 Estrogen affects bones indirectly through cytokines and local growth factors Aging Aging interacts mainly with bone deposition than bone resorption. His work often possessed psychological and religious vision with central themes of sin, deception, and redemption (Kennedy, 551). Cheever s short story entitled The Five Forty Eight portrays a struggle of good vs. evil. Following the themes of sin, deception, and redemption, we read of a young woman (good) seeking revenge for the evil done to her. His relationships are not the only area of his life that we see Blake?s evil nature rise. There are subtle hints of his self obsession throughout Cheever?s story. Early on in the story, Blake is admiring himself in a plate glass window and sees himself with ?a clear reflection? and the crowds ?like shadows at his back? (551). He then sees Mrs. Dent as a ?contorted being? (551) in the same window. Blake sees himself as a flawless creature of complete perfection with the mass of city pedestrians as a blur behind his faultlessness, and he can easily pick out the imperfections in other individuals. He sees himself as the ultimate perfection, instead of seeing the negative impact he has on his friends and family. His negative interactions with friends and family are the evil force that breaks his relationships. There is no mention of any moral actions performed by him. We find yet another example of Blake?s immoral actions through his self conceit. He fails to comfort a crying Mrs. Dent, ?he felt too contented and warm and sleepy to worry about her tears? (553). Blake has no compassion for others; he only worries about his own affairs. This is indicative that Blake is morally wrong. The sit ins highlighted the main moral issue that was being fought: racial discrimination and segregation. Blacks utilized the strategies of nonviolence and student involvement in order to combat the moral issue of racial segregation ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). The appeal for human rights through the use of nonviolence was an important strategy utilized by blacks during the Civil Rights movement and in particular the sit in movement. The students who initiated the sit ins were heavily trained on non violence tactics ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). These tactics were often taught through workshops on nonviolence that taught them how to take the blows and respond with a sense of dignity (Vivian, Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). Such training was useful, as whites often responded with violence.
