In Should We Let Them Go? Mary Midgley, an English moral philosopher, discusses the positions
behind captivity as well as her own view on the stances. She previews the defensive and abolitionist
position and somewhat critiques each, while answering the question. Bringing up the two
drastically opposite positons, lets her be able to state that there is a possible in between position.
The defensive position defends all the existing customs like having animals in captivity for
whatever the purpose is. This position claims that animals feel no distress because they do not miss
what they never had. The animalshave lost their active tendencies over time because of genetic
interference and conditioning. Midgley gives an example of hens showing ancestor behavior
challenging the defensive position. She states that animals can be bored and distressed in
confinement especially if they are naturally active animals like humans. Pain is not necessary for
