Francis turbines are the most common water turbine in use today. They were developed by James B. Francis and are also called mixed-flow turbines as water enters radially and exits axially. Francis turbines use both the kinetic energy and pressure energy of water to drive the turbine, making them a reaction turbine. They are suitable for medium and high capacity power generation. The main components are the runner blades, which convert the energy of flowing water into rotational motion, and the draft tube, which guides water out of the turbine.
