1. The Far Out Brochure!
Enjoy!
By: Francesca Cojuangco
Welcome to the Milky Way galaxy. The solar system
are the nine planets orbiting the sun. To orbit means to
circle something. The nine planets that orbit the sun
are:Mercury,Venus,Earth,Mars,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,N
eptune, and Pluto . Pluto is a dwarf planet. You can
read more bout Pluto and what a dwarf planet is. In
this brochure you will find information about
planets, the sun, comets, an introduction on gas giants
and terrestrial planets. Let’s get started my fellow
2. The Sun is a star.
A BIG ball of gas!! So if you
go there bring a lot of
sunscreen! Then sun is an
average star. It is mostly
made of hydrogen (72%)
and helium (26%). The
hydrogen atoms come
combine or mix together to
make helium atoms in
thermonuclear reactions.
These reactions create heat
and light.
Approximately 3.6
tons of the sun’s mass(the
amount of material in
something.) is being
transformed into heat and
light every second. So yo
got to be a fast walker if
you are going to stay there!
Good exercise though.
The solar system is
pretty much named after
the sun. . The sun has
99.8% of the total mass of
the solar system. The solar
system objects orbit the
sun in predictable almost
circular paths. (Imagine
that!)
Well that’s it for
the sun. Let’s move on to
PLANETS!!!!
Fun Fact!
The name Sol means sun in
Latin and Spanish. It is
named after the star that
rules.(wish I was named
after something,don’t you?)

3. Milky Way!
I am talking about the galaxy
not the chocolate. As some
of you might know we all live
in the galaxy we live in is
called the Milky Way! The
solar system is in the Milky
Way. It has over 400 billion
stars. Can you believe that?!
It is in a spiral shape. The
milky way is named like that
because it has a faint white
appearance in the dark sky.
It kind of looks like spilled
milk!
Fun Fact!
There are many
legends on how it
began and why it is
called the Milky
Way.:D
If you are hungry the
life forms in the Milky
Way might just give you
Milky Way chocolate!:D

TERRESTRIAL PLANETS!
Terrestrial planets are the first four planets closest to the sun. Those first four
planets are: Mercury,Venus,Earth, and Mars. Those planets are small and
usually rocky. Let’s go!

5. This is my planet, EARTH!!!
It is the third planet closest to the
sun. Planet earth has mild temperature
all the time. The earth is mostly
covered with water. The atmosphere is
made of nitrogen and oxygen. The earth
has only one satellite and that
satellite is big! Our moon is the only
extraterrestrial place us humans have
visited. The moon orbits the earth
once a month. Earth is the only planet
that has life (as far as we know). If
you go to our planet you will see us
walking all around. Earth is 150
kilometers from the sun which is also
93 million miles. That’s a long
distance if you think about it real
hard. Imagine a football field. You
are standing at one end and you are
the sun . Your friend is at the other
end and she is holding up the end of a
pencil and the eraser is my
planet, earth . The solar energy we get
though, is enough for us humans to
take in. If you travel better have
some stuff to keep you busy!

6. ALTHOUGH IT MAY LOOK
LIKE THE MOON IT IS
MERCURY. IT IS A
TERRESTRIAL PLANET.
WHICH MAKES IT THE
FIRST PLANET. WHICH
MAKES IT VERY HOT! IT
CAN EVEN MELT LEAD!
IT IS ONE OF THE
HOTTEST PLACES IN THE
SOLAR SYSTEM. ON THE
BRIGHT SIDE IT IS HOT .
ON THE SHADY SIDE IT IS
COLDER ,WHICH IS WHEN
IT IS AWAY FROM THE
SUN. IT IS SMALLER
THAN THE EARTH
ITSELF . MERCURY DOES
NOT HAVE A SATELLITE
(MOON). IF YOU GO TO
MERCURY YOU MIGHT
SEE A LOT OF CRATERS.
CRATERS ARE THE
OUTCOME OF
THOUSANDS OF OBJECTS
FLYING THROUGH SPACE.
THAT IS WHY MERCURY
LOOK SO MUCH LIKE THE
MOON, BECAUSE OF ITS
CRATERS . WELL , IF YOU
NEED SOME HEAT BUT

YOUR PLANET!! LET’S
MOVE ON!
Here are
some
craters on
the planet
Mercury!

7. ! VENUS!
Venus is the second planet
is from the sun . It’s a
terrestrial planet. It is
about the same size as
earth. Venus has no
satellites or moon. It is
so hot that it can melt
lead! That makes it one of
the hottest places in the
solar system! So you
might want to bring
sunscreen SPF 1,000,000!
Water is going to
impossible to find on
Venus because there isn’t
any. Venus has an
atmosphere of carbon
dioxide. The daft, cloudy
atmosphere makes it very
hard to see the planet’s
surface Lucky for us
humans we have a Modern
Radar! The modern radar
enables scientists to take
pictures through the
clouds . Now we know
that Venus is dry cracked
and covered with
volcanoes. Now let’s go to
the Milky Way’s fourth
planet!
Here is a perspective of
one of the volcanoes in
Venus. Fun fact! Venus is a Greek godess. She
was the godess of beauty. :) h 7

8. Mars. Some of you Marsians might be
familiar with your planet. Mars is the
fourth planet to the sun. It has two
moons named Phobos and Deimos.
Mars is very much like my home planet
earth. Though it is much more
dangerous in cases that it is
smaller,colder,and drier. It is somewhat
the same because it has parts that have
the same “weather” with Earth. Like on
some parts it is like Dessert Valley in the
state of California. Mars is also called
the Red planet because of the red soil it
has. It is made up of methane and
hydrogen. It is the next likely place us
humans will visit next to the moon .
Exploring Mars is going to be hard
though. We humans can’t breathe in the
thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide.
There is evidence of a lot of frozen
water.
Here is Mars with its thin
atmosphere of carbon dioxide.

9. GAS GIANTS!!!!
Gas giants are planets that are made out of gas. You can’t walk on them because, well they are made out of
gas. They are bigger than terrestrial planets though.Us humans who live on earth who are scientists have sent
out a probes to orbit the gas giants. The gas giants are Jupiter,Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Let’s go far out!
Yay!!

10. Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. Can believe that it has sixty three moons? The moon’s
even have names! The biggest moons though are named Ganymede,Calisto,Io,and Europa. The
planet Jupiter is eleven times bigger in diameter than earth ! The atmosphere there is so
poisonous and cold. It is made of hydrogen and helium. It has something called a Great Red
Spot which is a really an enormous storm almost as wide as three Earths! The atmosphere’s
pressure is so strong it can actually squish gas into liquid!!That’s like crushing a metal spaceship

11. Saturn! Saturn is a beautiful planet! It is well known for its ring
which revolves around it. The ring is made of little chunks of
ice and rock that were floating in space. Can you imagine that
it has 46 moons? Well it does. Saturn is mainly made of
hydrogen, helium, and methane. That is why the planet isn’t
solid n. The clouds and storms are like Jupiter but, here in
Saturn it is faster and you can’t see them clearly. It can reach
up to 1,135 miles per hour. Maybe if you go there you can take
a joy ride on the ring!(What a ride that would be!)

12. URANUS!
Uranus is the seventh
planet to the sun.
Like Saturn it has
rings. It has 11 rings
and 27 moons . It is
much more compact
than Saturn and
much colder . It would
be so poisonous to
us humans . It has
clouds that are really
cold at the top.
Under that it has a
blanket of vast, hot
water,ammonia,and
methane. Almost to
the core of Uranus it
can heat up to 9,000
degrees fahrenheit!
The planet looks blue
because of the
methane gas that is
part of the
atmosphere.

13. NEPTUNE!
Neptune is the 8th planet from the sun. It has 13 satellites and 4
thin rings. Although it is the smallest of the gas giants it is the
4th biggest planet of the solar system. It is mainly made of
hydrogen and helium with a bit of methane. Winds on Neptune
can reach up to 1,200 miles per hour! That is why it may be the
windiest planet in the solar system. Some humans called
scientists think that there maybe an ocean of extremely hot
water under those cold clouds of Neptune. The water does not
boil away because of the unbelievable pressure.
Quick Fun Fact!
Neptune is also the name of a god for
Romans. He is god of water and the sea!

14. Kuiper Belt:
Pluto and Eris
The Kuiper Belt (pronounced ky-per)
The Kuiper Belt is disk shaped zone of icy objects. Pluto is one of the objects there in the Kuiper
Belt. It is a dwarf planet. Some scientists consider Pluto a planet because it is strong enough to pull
itself into a sphere or a round ball. Some don’t and think it is just a big piece of the Kuiper Belt’s
debris.
Pluto has a thin in atmosphere. Can you believe the atmosphere actually freezes ,when it is farthest
from the sun, and falls on Pluto’s surface?Well it does. So, better bring some protective gear! Pluto is
smaller than Earth’s moon but, it still has its own satellite! The moon is called Charon and it is half
the size of Pluto.
July 2005, astronomers at the California Institute of Technology made public the discovery of a new
planet like object on the Kuiper Belt. They call it Eris! It is a dwarf planet like Pluto. It is more than
twice as far away from the sun as Pluto!
