Unclassed forests are areas recorded as forest land but not protected or reserved. They can be government or privately owned, with ownership status varying by state. All North Eastern states and parts of Gujarat contain unclassed forests. Reserved forests, also called permanent forest estates, are meant for sustainable timber and forest produce production. They are found in Kashmir, Andhra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat.
