The Ultimate Guide to Cloud Migration - A Whitepaper by RapidValueRapidValue
Digital transformation based on cloud-first strategy is a marathon. Any transformation journey which is disruptive and requires changing the core foundation of the organization can be very challenging. It is bound to fail unless the journey is planned with specific goals in mind, right roles and resources allocated to it, ‘as-is’ to ‘to-be state’ is mapped and implementation engine is fine-tuned.
Based on the experience of implementing numerous transformation projects for our global clients, RapidValue has formulated a BRAVE framework for cloud-first digital transformation.
Developers are constantly seeking an easier and faster way to build and ship new and modern software features and capabilities based on the latest and greatest cloud APIs. DevOps teams and IT professionals, on the other hand, face the challenge of controlling security, compliance, performance, scalability, and availability of the underlying infrastructure environments. Can both of these initiatives be achieved?
These slides based on the webinar featuring Torsten Volk, research director at leading IT analyst firm EMA, highlight how to bridge the gap between these two key initiatives and transform corporate IT into an accelerator for digital transformation.
Webinar presentation March 9, 2017

My presentation for our Benelux IBM Rational Innovate event. This presentation explains how the IBM Bluemix and devops as a service solution can be used for modern cloud based development.
The emergence of social, mobile, cloud, big data and analytics are fundamentally changing how we live, work and interact.
Mobile devices are ubiquitous. Changing consumer behaviors, supplanting PCs, generating massive amounts of data and putting new demands on the enterprise to not only support these devices but to adjust the way they do business.
Social technologies are changing the way we interact, communicate and share information – equally generating vast amounts of data and impacting business as they try to unlock the full potential social has to offer.
Cloud technologies bring new scale and efficiency to service delivery and enable more agile ways of doing business and drive business model innovation. For companies, It also brings information and applications to people at the right time and place.
All of these trends are fueling an explosion of data. Not only do enterprises need to store, manage and secure this data, they also need to derive meaningful insight from these vast amounts of data. Data is the basis of significant opportunity and a source of competitive advantage for all organizations. Data is a new economic asset, the next natural resource.
These trends are spawning new workloads, business processes and technology deployments that are putting unprecedented demands on our IT environments.

DevOps defines a set of roles and responsibilities focused on reducing risk in IT deployments and projects. By connecting development and operations, enterprise IT departments can begin to break down silos in order to:
- maximize automation;
- eliminate or significantly reduce human error;
- increase consistency; and
- reduce time spent on the outages, error detection and prevention caused by unstable environments
Gunnar Menzel, President of ODCA, Chief Architect of Capgemini Infra, outlines the ODCA perspective on the DevOps concept, focusing on key challenges it can help resolve and the benefits it can provide.

Business and IT leaders are understandably reluctant to retire considerable, legacy investment in technology, people, and processes due to security, risk, and regulatory compliance obligations. This creates a hybrid IT deployment model: an on-premise landscape of existing or legacy systems and off-premise cloud deployment of suitable IT capability.
The ODCA believes that integration of cloud deployments with enterprise landscapes should consider people, process, technology, and operating models. Doing so encourages faster cloud adoption, leverages existing enterprise investments in IT landscape and helps govern safe cloud adoption through effective risk and compliance management.

Download “Cloud Coexistence with Extant Enterprise Systems,” a whitepaper published by ODCA and top member companies.
Conducted at the end of 2014, the survey examined cloud computing adoption among ODCA member companies and revealed a current preference for internal cloud solutions. It also noted a growing interest in software-defined networking and hybrid cloud, suggesting that companies will look to solutions that blend public and internal resources over the next few years.
Virtual simulations can handle more and more areas in vehicle development with better quality resulting in an strongly increasing demand for virtual simulation to complement or replace costly and time consuming physical simulations. The need for high performance computing (HPC) cycles necessary to perform these simulations grows accordingly resulting in requirements in computing power, electricity, cooling and floor space that have to be met. This talk will give an overview about our approaches to handle these demands in terms of architecture, co-location and cloud solutions.
The rise in big data, as well as the looming impact of the Internet of Things (IoT), has highlighted how different data is today than a decade ago, from everything from the gathering sources to usage of information. With the data revolution, enterprises are able to take data generated from people and machines to turn into insight that may ultimately refine how they operate, as well as allow them to innovate and solve complex industry issues.
For enterprises looking to capitalize on the data growth, they need to ensure that not only is there enough power to meet computing demands, but that it’s reliable, renewable, energy-efficient and cost effective.
This presentation will explore how Verne Global and Datapipe are working together to enable enterprises to better their business decisions with the help of data. Through firsthand knowledge, the session will highlight what companies must do to ensure sufficient infrastructure and computing capabilities are in place as they look towards future innovation.
The industry needs cloud solutions built on an open, extensible architecture that delivers consistent access to infrastructure, runtimes and application resources. As customers continue to adopt cloud service-based solutions, they need to avoid vendor lock-in, simplify building of complex cloud environments, and quickly develop cloud-ready applications that drive massively scalable cloud models.
In addition to the Cloud Maturity Model (CMM), the ODCA team have been working on a practical framework to guide implementation of the CMM, and to guide organisations with actions to achieve an increased cloud maturity level based on the increased business benefits that the increased levels should offer. This session will explore the capability areas, and a framework of actions (and resulting artefacts) leading between the various CMM levels.
Forecast 2014: TOSCA: An Open Standard for Business Application Agility and P...Open Data Center Alliance
Business applications are the crown jewels of the new, cloud-based, application-centric economy. Cloud service providers and their diverse platform technologies are striving to serve these increasingly complex, mission-critical business applications. However, rapidly accelerating business, technical, and even regulatory requirements for applications make it increasingly difficult for cloud service providers and cloud platform technologies to meet the needs of innovative businesses for speed, accuracy and agility.
What was missing, until recently, was an open standard that would enable business to capture and automate the use of expert knowledge regarding essential details such as business application components, dependencies, and a wide range of requirements that could be automatically matched to corresponding cloud service provider capabilities. Cloud vendor software leveraging such an open standard would enable, for the first time, a truly competitive ecosystem where cloud platform and service providers can leap beyond commoditization in order to compete, innovate, and better serve the accelerating needs of cloud-based businesses.
The Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) is a new open standard created with the active participation of leading technology vendors, cloud service providers, and customers that facilitates all of the above goals and more. TOSCA defines the interoperable description of applications; including their components, relationships, dependencies, requirements, and capabilities, thereby enabling portability and semi-automatic management across cloud providers regardless of underlying platform or infrastructure; thus expanding customer choice, improving reliability, and reducing cost and time-to-value. These characteristics also facilitate the portable, continuous delivery of applications (DevOps) across their entire lifecycle. In short, they empower a much higher level of agility and accuracy for business in the cloud.
The growing impact of TOSCA has already inspired an OASIS Interop with six vendors demonstrating cross-cloud interoperability, an ODCA Proof-of-Concept demonstration, and several open source projects. This lively and fast-paced session is suitable for both business and technology focused thought-leaders, and will provide you with a better understanding of the potential and business impact of TOSCA.
Attend this presentation covers how Disney, Intel, Appnomic Systems, and the ODCA Infrastructure Work Group delivered a study of how to measure Standard Units of Measure (SUoM) across multiple cloud providers. You will see application and platform performance results of deploying the same application across three platforms including public and private. This approach of technology, tools, and methods can be used to hold your own cloud providers accountable for performance and cost management – using ODCA usage models.
With the Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) framework, one expects to achieve a strong level of interoperability when packaging an application or service for deployment to a Cloud Platform. T-Systems tested the OASIS TOSCA specification together with its Labs and University partners. This session will share the results and some of the important considerations that arose from the PoC.
Come to this session to get grounded on the ODCA technical landscape and matriculate into “ODCA University.” This session provides a brief introduction to the ODCA usage models and a sneak peek into the technical content that will be presented in the other ODCA U sessions.
A look at the rev 2.0 software defined networking (SDN) ODCA usage model, the incorporation of network function virtualization, and five new usage scenarios.
Leveraging the unique benefits of the cloud requires a specialized approach to application architecture. The right design enables business agility, massive scaling, ability to burst, and high resiliency. Plus, it promotes resource efficiency and can minimize costs. If you are involved in providing applications or services in the cloud, attend this session to learn the principles of cloud-aware application design and to explore emerging architectural patterns which maximize cloud advantages.
The requirement for the preservation and production of electronically stored information (e-Discovery) is a requirement of the American Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP). As corporate information is moved to the cloud the fulfilling of these requirements becomes more challenging for enterprises that operate in the USA.
As well as the requirements for e-Discovery, organizations often require to undertake forensic examination of assets in order to determine the nature of an attack or to pursue internal investigations.
This session will discuss the subject of e-Discovery and Forensics from an enterprise perspective and a framework by which companies subject to these requirements can operate with cloud providers.
Cloud service brokerage is an emerging hot topic for cloud computing. These intermediary services are positioned between the cloud subscriber and one or more cloud providers, to enable fast and on-demand provisioning. This session will explore the new Cloud Services Brokering usage model including key considerations and usage scenarios.
This presentation brings together the key usage models that describe IaaS including compute, storage and network. This is a fresh take on the enterprise perspective on IaaS and the important requirements.
An overview of the new Data Exchange for SaaS Usage Model is provided in this session. This usage model addresses the challenges that many organizations face when exchanging data with a SaaS provider. It also describes steps organizations can take in the planning and implementation phases to remediate these challenges.
This new usage model guides the creation of a business strategy enabled by cloud-based services. Attend this session to learn the key considerations that should be taken into account when developing a business strategy for cloud adoption and business transformation.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

We formed the ODCA in 2010 to address a fundamental change in IT
The world is changing: A growth in the number of devices and mounting data represents an opportunity to become a critical element of a businesses value – not the operational support of yesterday.
To seize this opportunity, we much change the fundamental way we manage IT infrastructure that provides the resilience and agility required – our traditional approaches simply will not get us there.
This new approach is so critical to our business bottom line and competitive position in respective markets, that working together in new ways is required.
Fast forward three years: The ODCA is a vibrant organization with hundreds of global IT leaders with a single focus: Forming unified enterprise requirements for cloud and collaborate with our provider members and standards org partners to drive these requirements to adoption.
Given the importance of this IT transformation and the size of the opportunity through innovation, our progress to this goal has been incredible.
Earlier this year, BMW first announced its plans for aligning its data center innovation to private and hybrid cloud based on ODCA requirements.
Today, I’m delighted to share that my fellow leaders on the ODCA board are also detailing that they are well underway in driving their planning and adoption of cloud based on ODCA requirements as well. This signals a fundamental milestone for ODCA – from requirements definition to turning these requirements into demand: for data center infrastructure and cloud services.
As you can see…this cross section of leaders represent multiple industries, multiple geographies and spans enterprise, cloud services and consulting.
At Forecast this week these leaders will be sharing their insights to help accelerate broader deployments – and this is what this event is all about, sharing with peers our insights about the progress we’ve made in development of our paths to the cloud based on the fundamental work of ODCA. Let’s start with BMW’s journey.
We want to be the leading provider of premium products ans premium services for individual mobility.
BMW Brands: BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce. Motorcycles.

Now (next), i will share with you one driver for a robust, worldwide connected, always on IT infrastructure.
Also a very important driver for our hybrid cloud strategy.

Premium cars will be deeply integrated as personnal device in all daily tasks.
Seamless integration will be a key success factor.
-> sheer driving pleasure is the result
Particularly for the new e-mobility (products are in 2013 BMW i3 + i8) the ….
BMW ConnectedDrive will be available in more than 40 markets andwill thus cover more than90% of total volume (~ 2015).
Evolution + Revolution.
Additional new targets.
Cloud = Virtualization, Automation, Self Service Experience, schnelle Bereitstellung, dynamische Ressourcenanpassung, Commodity, internationale Standards
Legacy Systeme (2100 Applikationen). Klare Richtlinien für Applikationsentwicklung notwendig.
Evtl. Beispiel Life Migration in BMW Werken.
16 use cases for private cloud release 1.
Release 2 will be followed in 2014.
The current product offerings aren‘t mature.
The solution achitecture should be a long-term approach. Therefore -> structured in layers, replaceable components, vendor independent.
Our current implementation:
Self Service portal with liferay
Business automation with BMC Atrium Orchestrator
Technical automation with different vendor products (Windows -> MS SCCM, …, SAP -> Life…)

Of course there is more to ODCA than our leadership moving forward with existing requirements, this is about all of us.
Today, I’m excited to talk about the next evolution of ODCA in the form of new members, new requirements, and new levels of adoption.
Let’s get started
Remember – this slide is an animation with the three new members announced after you present the left side of the slide
2013 has represented an incredible growth in membership from A to Z – Avago to ZTE. These companies reflect our expanding data center focus and bring unique insights to our work.
Here Mario – I would pick a few to call out and leave Microsoft for last.
Cohesive FT: Featuring former ODCA board member Chris Swan, this company is working on innovative SDN solutions (and is a Forecast sponsor)
DATARAM: DRAM supplier
Kingston: DRAM supplier and a Forecast sponsor
Legrand: data center cabling
Microsoft – you know the story here
Spirent – communications test and measurement
State of Michigan – don’t have information here other than a US state IT organization
Telstra – Australian telecom provider
ZTE – 5th largest global telecom equipment manufacturer (4th largest phone manufacturer)

Today – I’m delighted to announce three new leaders for ODCA, members who represent leadership in their geographies and market segments.
Infosys: A leading global service provider based in Bangalore, India
SAP: Global market leader in enterprise business applications based in Frankfurt Germany
UOL: Leading Latin American ISP and hosts one of the top 100 websites in the world, based in San Paulo, Brazil.
We have two of our new members in the audience today, and I’d like to introduce Vishnu Bhat to the stage.

As we focus on growing our leading contributors to the ODCA, we also look to bring scale to deployments based on our requirements.
With our leadership ready to share plans and insights on adoption of the cloud based on ODCA requirements, the time is right to accelerate broad member adoption. To that end we are introducing ODCA Accelerate, a program designed to incent peer engagement amongst members and public awareness of the influence of ODCA usage models on IT deployments.
For enterprises and service providers here today – if you walk away from Forecast with plans to deploy private cloud or public cloud services shaped by requirements from ODCA, we would like to hear from you. Please visit our website and learn more about the Accelerate program or ask an ODCA staff member on site for details.
If you are a solution provider that is offering HW and SW meeting ODCA requirements we also want to hear from you. This is your opportunity to gain excellent visibility for solutions offerings. Work with the ODCA to help move enterprise adoption forward.
The requirements for the cloud continue to move forward based on the Alliance’s cloud maturity model. For those in the audience that attended ODCAU sessions this morning, I hope you enjoyed our Technical Committee leaders providing an in-depth review of ODCA publications.
Today, we’re excited to deliver a number of new and updated publications starting with the completion of our master usage model for data center infrastructure as a service: Software defined networks and scale out storage. These new usage models represent requirements for two areas of rapid industry innovation and prioritize requirements for the enterprise to help speed adoption of solutions. This is a big deal – the IaaS market, according to IDC, is expected to grow to over $20B/year, and our work reflects the first comprehensive customer requirements for IaaS.
Our new publications today also features the first comprehensive requirements for Information as a Service. You cannot have a conversation with colleagues today or attend a conference without hearing about “big data”. Data analytics are critical to the transformation of enterprise computing which is why ODCA extended its charter to add this important focus.
This document provides deep insight from our data services working group including topics such as orchestration of data delivery, the infrastructure and management schema required, and how analytics are integrated with mobile and cloud information architectures.
Again – an enormous focus of the enterprise with collective global investment estimated at $23B/year and estimates rising seemingly every time a new report is issued.
I’m also very proud to announce a comprehensive update to ODCA usage models representing the largest enhancements since the organization’s formation.
Usage models which have been updated include:
Data Security Framework
Carbon Footprint
IO Control
Long Distance Migration
Provider Assurance
Thanks to solutions provider members, insight from member POCs and our collaboration with standards organizations, we have been able to raise the technical detail in these usage models as well as delivered the best requirements for rapid integration into deployments.
And this brings me to you. Our mission to accelerate adoption of cloud computing is made stronger with engagement across members. This is why Forecast is a unique conference…not just about education but about defining business opportunities.
I challenge you to use your time at Forecast to Accelerate your own business plans.
If you are an enterprise raise your level of insight on how leaders are deploying cloud today to accelerate your corporate planning and adoption.
If you are a provider use Forecast as a major call to action that enterprises are anticipating your solutions for rapid adoption, and share your plans for delivery of solutions and services.
We have provided an agenda focused on interactive discussion featuring a who’s who of enterprise cloud delivery – take advantage of this core agenda.
We have provided an opportunity to take control of the agenda with our MEET-Up program – engage with other attendees and propose topics of discussions today.
For more informal networking we will host a Forecast reception this evening featuring entertainment and casino games. This is the perfect place to make new business contacts.
Finally – walk away from Forecast with plans. Plans for your business and plans to begin or deepen your membership in the ODCA. Reach out to ODCA leaders while on-site to discuss your interests to contribute, and help us accelerate cloud adoption.
