The STELLAR Network of Excellence is a European FP7 project that aims to address the fragmentation of disciplines and community fragmentation in technology enhanced learning (TEL) research. It brings together researchers from different fields to develop a strategic research agenda for TEL. The project will support collaboration and capacity building between European research teams through shared projects, tools, and agendas. It also seeks to engage policymakers to provide strategic direction for integrating TEL excellence. The project is organized around three "Grand Challenges" or research themes.

Clickers for Large Class Teaching

Philosophical pedagogies are typically based on abstract discussion of texts, and have remained largely unchanged throughout the history of the subject. However, there is a considerable body of research which suggests that this is unsuited to some learning styles and may discourage some students from prolonged study (AEL, 2003; Pashler et al, 2008). Many prefer to learn through visual cues and models alongside engaging with literature resources. Students with learning needs like dyslexia might find the emphasis on the written word to be a considerable barrier to philosophical study. Simultaneously, there are ever greater numbers of websites, apps and mashups dedicated to the study of philosophy which sometimes do little more than recreate printed materials in a digital environment.
This presentation explores the potential for introducing and integrating visual pedagogies into teaching and learning philosophy by reviewing a number of different styles of visualization and their possible use in educational scenarios with a particular focus on education and the appropriate use of digital technologies.

This is the JRC-IPTS invited presentation on policy recommendations for mainstreaming ICT-enabled learning innovations at VISIR International Seminar (25-26 March, Committee of Regions, Brussels). Short description: Technologies for learning are considered as key enablers of educational innovation. However, their full potential is not being realised in formal education settings and major questions are being asked about the sustainability, systemic impact and mainstreaming of ICT-enabled learning innovations (ICT-ELI) in Europe. This presentations focuses on recommendations for immediate strategies and actions to be undertaken by policy-makers at local, regional, national, and EU level to further develop and mainstream ICT-ELI with systemic impact, contributing to the modernisation of Education and Training systems in Europe. The recommendations were developed in the context of the 'Up scaling Creative Classrooms in Europe (SCALE CCR) project, carried out by JRC-IPTS on behalf of the European Commission, DG Education and Culture, based on desk research; case reports from Europe and Asia; continuous stakeholders consultations; and in-depth expert interviews. The final set of recommendations was further validated and prioritised through an online consultation with 149 educational stakeholders. The recommendations were clustered into seven areas presenting a holistic agenda to guide the further development and mainstreaming of ICT-ELI: Content and Curricula; Assessment; School Staff Professional Development; Research; Organisation and Leadership; Connectedness; and Infrastructure. The number and variety of the recommendations provided depict the complexity of ICT-ELI and the systemic approach needed for their mainstreaming across Education and Training systems in Europe.

What can we learn from UKOER?

The document discusses the ALTC Good Practice Reports (GPRs) on technology-enhanced learning and teaching. 11 GPRs were commissioned to evaluate outcomes and practices from ALTC projects. The GPR on technology-enhanced learning covered 33 projects and defined technology-enhanced learning as enriching learning experiences and intellectual expression using digital media. It identified 10 outcomes of exemplar projects and provided recommendations for implementing good practices. The Network of Australasian Tertiary Associations aims to integrate and disseminate the GPRs' findings.

This is the JRC-IPTS invited presentation on policy recommendations for mainstreaming ICT-enabled learning innovations at VISIR International Seminar (25-26 March, Committee of Regions, Brussels). Short description: Technologies for learning are considered as key enablers of educational innovation. However, their full potential is not being realised in formal education settings and major questions are being asked about the sustainability, systemic impact and mainstreaming of ICT-enabled learning innovations (ICT-ELI) in Europe. This presentations focuses on recommendations for immediate strategies and actions to be undertaken by policy-makers at local, regional, national, and EU level to further develop and mainstream ICT-ELI with systemic impact, contributing to the modernisation of Education and Training systems in Europe. The recommendations were developed in the context of the 'Up scaling Creative Classrooms in Europe (SCALE CCR) project, carried out by JRC-IPTS on behalf of the European Commission, DG Education and Culture, based on desk research; case reports from Europe and Asia; continuous stakeholders consultations; and in-depth expert interviews. The final set of recommendations was further validated and prioritised through an online consultation with 149 educational stakeholders. The recommendations were clustered into seven areas presenting a holistic agenda to guide the further development and mainstreaming of ICT-ELI: Content and Curricula; Assessment; School Staff Professional Development; Research; Organisation and Leadership; Connectedness; and Infrastructure. The number and variety of the recommendations provided depict the complexity of ICT-ELI and the systemic approach needed for their mainstreaming across Education and Training systems in Europe.

What can we learn from UKOER?
This document summarizes the key lessons learned from the UKOER program, which aimed to encourage the creation and use of open educational resources (OER) in UK higher education. The three main lessons are: 1) OER were embraced by a wide range of stakeholders but partnerships may impact openness; 2) Not all OER are truly open and accessible; and 3) Sustaining a culture of openness faces challenges without ongoing support.
