Fold mountains like the Alps and Andes are formed when tectonic plates collide and the pressure causes the earth's crust to buckle upwards. Some of the youngest fold mountains, like those found in Kerry, Ireland, were formed during the Armorican foldings approximately 250 million years ago when plates collided and the crust arched to create mountain ranges. The inner structure of the Earth consists of a solid inner core surrounded by a liquid outer core and mantle, with slabs of crust that form tectonic plates that move and interact at plate boundaries.
