Methods to determine pressure drop in an evaporator or a condenserTony Yen
This articles aims to explain how one can relatively easily calculate the pressure drop within a condenser or an evaporator, where two-phase flow occurs and the Navier-Stokes equation becomes very tedious.
it describes: 1- What is AC/AC Converter and its applilcation?
2- AC Converter in resistive and inductive load with equations
3- using phase control and Time Proportional Control
The simulation software should be used and tuned against plant data to verify the model and to be able to accurately predict product yield.
This is the brochure of TechnipFMC SPYRO Suite 7, commercial cracking software, used for rigorous simulation of steam cracking.
We are facing many challenges today regarding estimation of the flow rate of any pipeline or hose installed in our plant.
This paper just gives a brief of some equations used in the gas plants to calculate the leakage rate, minimum time required to get a shut-in test, and the maximum pressure drop for new lines.
There are many equations to calculate the flow rate of gas through pipe line like:
1. Darcy formula using gas expansion factor which can be used in sonic and subsonic flow.
2. Crane isothermal flow equation
3. Weymouth isothermal flow equation
4. Panhandle isothermal flow equation
This paper gives a a quick way to:
1. Calculate the leakage rate from gas line using pressure drop method.
2. Estimate the minimum time required to get a shut-in test on gas transmission line.
3. Estimation of the maximum pressure drop for new lines.
Vessels are generally sized based on the heat and
material balance for governing case. Vapor liquid
separation vessels are generally sized based on
settling out of 150 µm liquid droplets from vapor
stream except in the case of Flare knock-out drum
that generally apply 300-600 µm.
Centrifugal compressors are considered as a subclass of dynamic turbo machinery. They achieve
the pressure increase by adding kinetic energy to a
continuous flow of fluid. This kinetic energy is
converted to an increase in pressure in the diffuser
where the kinetic energy is converted to pressure
energy by decreasing the gas velocity.
Hydrate formation is a well-known risk in natural gas wells and pipelines and is managed by temperature control or the injection of hydrate inhibitors, most commonly methanol, which lower the hydrate formation temperature to below the minimum expected operating temperature.
The Number of transfer units (NTU) method
is used to calculate the rate of heat transfer
in heat exchangers when there is insufficient
information to calculate the Log-mean
temperature difference (LMTD).
The flow regime and droplet diameter is important steps in sizing the gas/liquid separators. The selection of flow regime depends on the location of the separators. For example, if the separator is at suction of a compressor, the flow regime should be stratified flow to facilitate liquid separation from gas in separators
To determine the optimum pipe diameter, you should go make the comparative analysis to determine the most optimum pipe size which reflects the most economic option.
This example is for illustration the importance of the the comparative analysis.
Note: According to ASME, pipe with 5 in diameter is not standard, but i selected it in the example for illustration only.
The structure and properties of phase equilibrium diagrams for the azeotropic
multi component mixtures are based on the definition of azeotropy. Azeotrope means bubbling
without change in general. This means that the vapor generated in a distillation has the same
composition of the liquid with which it is in equilibrium.
Continuing with the previous document "Azeotropic distillation 1", I used Aspen plus for sizing and rating the distillation columns and determining the diameter and height of the column and the tray type with the required down-comer.
CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

1. FLOW MEASUREMENT THROUGH ORIFICE
One of the applications of Bernoulli’s equation is
orifice flow meter.
Orifice meter is a device used for measuring the rate
of flow of a fluid flowing through a pipe. It consists
of flat circular plate which has a circular hole, in
concentric with the pipe. The diameter of orifice
may vary from 0.4 to 0.8 times the pipe diameter.
To derive the orifice flow equation, we will start
with Bernoulli’s equation.

𝑉2

𝑉2 = √(2𝑔ℎ + 𝑉1

Where h is the differential head
By continuity equation,
𝐴1 𝑉1 = 𝐴2 𝑉2
Cc (Coefficient of contraction), 𝐶𝑐 =
𝐴2
𝐴 𝑜
𝑉1 =
𝐴 𝑜 𝐶𝑐
𝐴1
𝑉2
Hence, 𝑉2 =
√2𝑔ℎ
√(1 −
𝐴 𝑜

𝐴1

Thus, discharge flow rate
𝑄 = 𝐴2 𝑉2 = 𝑉2 𝐶𝑐 𝐴 𝑜 =
𝐴 𝑜 𝐶 𝑐√2𝑔ℎ
√1 − (

(1)
By substituting Cc by Cd (Coefficient of discharge)
𝑄 = 𝐶 𝑑
𝐴 𝑜 𝐴1√2𝑔ℎ

Where Cd (Coefficient of discharge)
𝐶 𝑑 = 𝐶𝑣

𝐴1
2 𝐶 𝑐
2)
You can calculate the flow rate through an orifice
using equation 1 or equation 2 with finding the
value of Cd using the above equation.
Another equation for calculating the flow rate
through an orifice is:
𝑄 = 𝐶 𝐴 𝑜 √2𝑔 (
𝑃1
𝛾

𝑃2
𝛾

Where C, the coefficient of the meter (orifice
coefficient), is given by
𝐶 =
𝐶 𝑣 𝐶 𝐶
√1 − 𝐶 𝑐
2 (

(4)
In case of incompressible flow through a horizontal
flow meter installation, use equation 5.
𝑄 = 𝐶 𝐴 𝑜√(

(𝑃1 − 𝑃2 )) (5)
Orifice types and values of C, Cv, Cd:
Cc is used in case of equation 1, 2.
Cc, Cv are used in case of equation 3, 4.
C is ued in case of equation 5.
