Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Italy and disobeyed her wealthy parents by training as a nurse. In 1853, she went to Crimea to help wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. She found the Barrack Hospital at Scutari to be dirty and unsanitary, with not enough beds and supplies. Nightingale worked to clean and organize the hospital, reducing the death rate. When she returned to Britain, she was hailed as a heroine and continued working to improve hospital conditions and establish nursing as a profession.
