Abstract: For this presentation the topic chosen was Flunk Day. Coe College has
many grand and unique traditions, but none quite like Flunk Day. This day is one of
Coe s oldest traditions and arguably the most recognized. In this paper I will explain
it s rich history which includes the purpose, evolution, and current significance it
holds to Coe College.
Flunk day at Coe College is more than just a day to skip class and drink liquor.
Sure, looking from the outside in it may look like this. But for the people on the
inside, experiencing it first hand, it s something much more powerful. It s a day of
bonding with teachers and students like never before. It s a day celebrating all the
hard work put into the semester before and the dreadful winter months. It s a day to
catch Spring Fever... and enjoy it. A day to unload, physically and mentally, and
drink a brew or two. It is... Flunk Day.
This glorious day started in 1911 by no other than John Marquis. Marquis was Coe
s president from 1909 1920 and arguably started one of Coe College s favorite, and
most famous, traditions. The ads that the college ran out in 1911 described a day of
enjoying the spring and unloading from schoolwork. The day included picnics,
boating, and other leisure activities. Instantly it was a hit. Since 1911, Coe College
has had 104 Flunk Days, more than any other university or college. Knox College, a
small, private, liberal arts college in Illinois has had Flunk Day since 1922.

Earl Warren was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1953 to 1969. Warren is
best known for his majority decision in the controversial case Brown v. Board of

Eisenhower. One of Earl Warren s biggest regrets was Korematsu. This was when
Earl Warren arranged the plan that removed about 100,000 people of japanese
descent regardless of citizenship from their homes and placed into internment
camps during World War 2 and kept them there until the war was over. Because of
this thousands of Japanese people lost their jobs and businesses. But At the time he
tried to justify his actions by stating that it was a matter of national defense. In

In The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan doyle, Holmes says, It
is a wicked world, and when a clever man turns his brain to crime it is the worst of
all. This quote is a very accurate representation of exactly who Holmes is. He is a
regular detective that has transformed the way crimes are solved through his
intelligence and thinking. For this time period, this was unheard of which made it
difficult for criminals. The film the Great Mouse Detective is a tuned down version
of the film, Sherlock Holmeswhich was meant to introduce a younger audience to

In the films The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, there is a case being
worked on which the character Sherlock Holmes or Sir Basil is trying to solve. In
both films, professor Moriarty or Rattigan is the criminal mastermind which is
Sherlock Holmes main enemy. He is depicted quite a bit differently but he plays a

These two characters are Lord Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes and Fidget in The
Great Mouse Detective. Both of these characters commit crimes and do dirty work.
For example Lord Blackwood makes human sacrifices while Fidget kidnaps Olivia
s father. Although both these characters do bad things, they play completely
different roles. In Sherlock Holmes, Lord Blackwood plays a much bigger role and
is the main antagonist since you don t see much of Professor Moriarty. Then in The
