Through Homer s Iliad, it is revealed that Greeks thought fighting in battle and victory

Roaring engines are often not synonymous with comfort, regardless that was what an engine
symbolized for me. Throughout my childhood, I often found myself sleeping, hurdling down
roads in my own bubble of isolated roaring noise, elevated above the pavement below. This island
of solace has always been my away place from the world. A place which only grew as I matured.
My earliest memories often entail the roaring of my safety cushion along the great Californian
and East Coast roads. These roads symbolized my adolescent life through the back seat of the
Lexus LX450 which I grew to know and love. This big beige car is older than I am and has been
in my family for 17 years. Its split tailgate is extremely worn, the bumpers all have their own
dents each with their own long tale. The paint is peeling in some places and has been rather
crudely painted over by my father. Its battery hardly charges, The antennae for the radio no
longer rises and falls. This hunk of rugged machinery is far from abrasive on the inside. Although
original leather material of its interior was once a cold beige shell, it has since been familiarized
by wear. These seats always had a certain familiarity to me. The soiled seats dredged with the

Gender can hold a strong influence in how an individual survives the death of a loved one. The
general differences between males and females and the management of the grief process carries
through from one culture to another. Most adults manage grief in the same way with the
exception of parents losing a child. When parents loose a child they often experience the same
emotions but they may not always be showing it in the same way (Christiansen 2014). Girls
employed significantly more strategies to cope with stress compared to boys. (Kauser Munir

The year of 2014 was probably one of the craziest times of my life. I never thought things would
go this way. I thought I was going to be living life with my papaw by my side for a long time. I

that God was calling his name, and that it was his time to go. We had so many good memories

Choosing An Online Survey And Collect Responses
Instead of interviewing four people, I decided to make an online survey and collect responses
because I was at home for Thanksgiving. As a result I got more responses, and I think people were
more honest as well. I also allowed for the respondents to choose whether they have majority or
minority status. I had nine responses, three identifying as minoritystatus, five as majority status, and
one student who was not sure, since he/she/they fell into multiple target groups but reported that
she didn t experience any discrimination. There were some interesting discrepancies, since one
female student reported that she was a minority, and another reportedly felt she was in the majority.
At RIT, the distribution of gender differs by program, so this could be a reason why this
discrepancy exists. None of the students who identified themselves as having majority status
reported experiencing any discrimination themselves, and neither did the one female student who
identified as a minority but fell into no other target groups. One respondent, a self identified
conservative, Catholic white male chose to identify as a minority group. I thought this made sense
since college campuses tend to be liberal, so conservatives are sometimes considered to be

Through the use of structure and other literary elements such as personification, imagery, and

In the first quatrain, the author starts off with general questions about life that helps characterize
the voice. In the first sentence, the voice wonders if he is able to start from nothingness. This

page, everyone must start somewhere and take that one small step. The voice then worries about
the outcome of life by juxtaposing joy and grief. The echo replies that grief is an outcome of life
because it is not trying to conceal the inevitable truth. This introduction presents the voice as being

Anti Transcendentalism In The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in the 1800s, takes place in a New England
Puritan society in the 1600s. Hawthorne was an anti transcendentalist, the great nephew of John
Hathorne, who believed that all humans have an innate darkness within them. Hathorne was the
only judge who did not apologize for the Salem Witch Trials. The basis of anti transcendentalism
also included that the forest/nature is evil because that is where the devil lives, and that society was
good because it kept humans from giving in to their evil natures. Hawthorne uses symbolism, a
literary device that uses objects and people to stand for something outside themselves, throughout

the letter, essentially the same sin as Hester s. The scarlet letter is the sin, and the burrs are the
guilt tying Hester and Dimmesdale to one sin. Right after Pearl threw the burr, Dimmesdale ducked
away. Hawthorne writes, The sensitive clergyman shrunk, with nervous dread, from the light
missile. Detecting his emotion, Pearl clapped her little hands in the most extravagant ecstacy... old
