FIRST AID ON EPISTAXIS
“Epistaxis is defined as bleeding from nose or moderate
flow of blood from the nose”.
CAUSES OF EPISTAXIS
• Picking out crusts and
hair.
• Blowing the nose.
• High blood pressure.
• Bleeding disorder.
• Summer-usually no
cause.
• Injury to the bone of the
nose.
• Injury to front part of
head.
• Common cold and other
infections.
FIRST AID MANAGEMENT OF EPISTAXIS
• Place the victim in a sitting position with
his head lean forward.
• Pinch the soft nostrils together, holding
the pressure for several minutes.
• Apply the towel wet with cold water or
ice over the nose, face, forehead and
back of the neck.
• Loosen the clothing around the neck.
• Ask him to breathe through the mouth and spit
out any blood that enters the mouth.
• Do not let the patient talk, cough, walk or blow
the nose as it may increase the bleeding and
cause it to restart.
• Shift the victim to hospital for further evaluation
and treatment.
